Think economy is bad? Try flying 'last class'

Bargain hunters will stop at nothing to bag the cheapest possible flight.

It will therefore come as no surprise that airlines have introduced a new category – albeit an informal one – for their worst seats, known as "last class".

The airlines that really need to meet their bottom line in a big way are going to push the limits of what they can get away with

Industry expert Phil Derner Jr

"Last class" seats have been introduced by major airlines to compete with their budget counterparts such as Ryanair and EasyJet.

American Airlines recently said it will offer tickets with "less frills" but at a far cheaper price.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has a 'basic' economy class ticket, with no refunds or upgrades.

'Pushing the limits'

While the term is not official, it is used by those in the aviation industry to refer to seats that are a grade below those in economy class.

Last class seats are likely to be found at the back of the plane, where it is noisier, or by a toilet.

Passengers with these tickets often cannot make changes, get a refund or choose their seats in advance.

"Last class exists because the airlines are a business," Phil Derner Jr, from industry news site NYCAviation told the Daily Mail.

"The airlines that really need to meet their bottom line in a big way are going to push the limits of what they can get away with.

"Airlines are doing OK at the moment because of the low cost of oil but you have 15 years of downturn in the industry which made them look at their costs and find ways to pass on their costs."

Flying 'park bench'

Airlines would always appeal to the "lowest common denominator", Mr Derner said, adding that some seats were "not much more than a park bench".

US airline Frontier was even charging for window seats in last class. Mr Derner said other last-class seats might include those that do not recline.

Last class passengers may be given a number to call if there is a problem with their flight, rather than helped to re-book in person. They could be given completely separate helplines to those who have paid more.

Fees to change last-class tickets can be more than $200, with add-on fees for checked-in baggage and on-board food.

  • Australia already has a 'last class operator'. It is called Tiger Airways.

    • Really...I have been over in Perth for work for a few years and we regularly used Tiger to fly to Asia. They were excellent and left Jetstar and Qantas for dead, Im guessing something has changed.

    • Let me guess you paid $50 Cairns to Melbourne and you expected to sit in Business class and be served champagne and Caviar?

Ive flown on many an airline and Tiger represents amazing value. New aircraft, attentive staff and a seat to get me to a destination. When I want all the bells and whistles, i'll pay the extra and not whinge about it expecting business class for $50

    • Never had a problem with Tiger - as with all flights, I just sit down, shut up and get it over with. The only thing that makes a flight enjoyable for me is the knowledge that it didn't cost me any more than it had to.

    • Edoi, I think Tiger international is a different beast to Tiger domestic, which is probably what the commentator is referring to. However, there is no way I agree that Tiger is better than Qantas or Jetstar. Tiger is no better than on par with Jetstar and is miles behind Qantas IMO.

    • JetStar already has it and even QANTAS is not far behind.

    • I have flown Tiger once and vowed never to again. Apart from having to wait for an hour for our bags to materialise after landing (cost cutting meant they only had one baggage handler, all on his own he had to get all the bags from disembarking passengers off, then put the bags for the boarding passengers on the plane, then drive the cart back to the terminal and load them all onto the conveyor belt) - the big scary bit was when the plane was delayed taking off on the return trip because they couldn't get the hatch shut. I was just about to get off when they slammed it shut and started taxiing for takeoff. I have never been scared on a plane except for that day, I was sure that the hatch was going to fly open during the flight and we would crash. I went with Tiger once to see what it was like, and that one experience was enough. I will always pay those few extra dollars to fly with another airline, if I think it is too much, then I won't go. My life, and the lives of my family, are worth more than a cheap airfare.

    • Skimmer, No I paid the full ask and being old and worldly enough, I was not expecting much, when compared to the flying rat or the virgin rictus smile. Tiger did not let my expectations down with the most uncomfortable and narrowest seats in cattle class in the country. Sitting in a window seat I was surprised to find the fuselage side arm rest had been hacksawed and then wrenched off, leaving ragged metal edges. The hosties are as ocker and lowbrow as you can find. The Melbourne "terminal"( temporary after how many years) is a blight on the industry - dirty, no seating before seat allocation etc. Third world countries do it better. Oh just to reinforce the brand reputation, they cancelled my down leg 2 DAYS prior to departure for technical reasons. They must be clairvoyant to know the plane is unserviceable that far out. More likely they did not get enough bums on seats to warrant the return sectors, Do I need to be more explicit other than to point out that they took2 months to refund/ compensate the cancelled leg.
