Dark side of the Universe with Alan Alda HD
Once we thought our world was the center of the Universe. Today we know we're on a minor if privileged planet circling an average star in an inconspicuous spot in an unremarkable galaxy that's just one of billions of galaxies occupying a Universe that stretches farther than we can see even with our biggest telescopes. But in the last few years telescopes like these here in Chile have shown us that we are even less at the center of the Universe than we could ever have imagined. You and me and these rocks and the sun that shines on us and the stars that twinkle overhead aren't even built of the same stuff that most of the Universe is made of. And there's a mysterious force out there in space that literally comes out of nowhere. It's a force that seems to be pushing the Universe apart faster and faster until one day everything out there beyond our own little solar system will simply disappear into blackness. Our Universe and our place in it just got a whole lot weirder.
A 2004 documentary - In 2011 Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess along with Brian Schmidt won the Nobel prize in Physics. The L.H.C. built in 2009 is now the largest accelerator in the world.

M*A*S*H is an American television series developed by Larry Gelbart, adapted from the 1970 feature film MASH (which was itself based on the 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, by Richard Hooker). The series, which was produced in association with 20th Century Fox Television for CBS, follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the "4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital" in Uijeongbu, South Korea during the Korean War. The show's title sequence features an instrumental version of "Suicide Is Painless", the theme song from the original film. The show was created after an attempt to film the original book's sequel, M*A*S*H Goes to Maine, failed. The T.V show version of MASH is the most well known version of the M*A*S*H works, and one of the highest rated shows in U.S. television history.
The series premiered in the U.S. on September 17, 1972, and ended February 28, 1983, with the finale, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", becoming the most watched television episode in U.S. television history at the time, with a record-breaking 125 million viewers (60.2 Rating and 77 Share), according to the New York Times. It had struggled in its first season and was at risk of being cancelled. Season two of M*A*S*H placed it in a better time slot (airing after the popular All in the Family); the show became one of the top ten programs of the year and stayed in the top twenty programs for the rest of its eleven-season run. It is still broadcast in syndication on various television stations. The series, which depicted a three-year military conflict, spanned 256 episodes and lasted eleven seasons.
Many of the stories in the early seasons are based on tales told by real MASH surgeons who were interviewed by the production team. Like the movie, the series was as much an allegory about the Vietnam War (still in progress when the show began) as it was about the Korean War.
In 1997, the episodes "Abyssinia, Henry" and "The Interview" were respectively ranked number 20 and number 80 on TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time. In 2002, M*A*S*H was ranked number 25 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. In 2013, the Writers Guild of America ranked it as the fifth best written TV series ever and TV Guide ranked it as the eighth greatest show of all time.

Albert Einstein was not a fan of quantum mechanics. He was annoyed by the uncertain, random nature of the universe it implied (hence the famous quote "God does not play dice with the universe"). So, Einstein tried to develop a unified theory that would circumvent what he saw as quantum mechanics' flaws. In this excerpt from the 2014 World Science Festival Program Dear Albert, Alan Alda and Brian Greene discuss Einstein's relationship with the "unruly child" of quantum mechanics, and how the famed physicist came up with the Special Theory of Relativity.

The objectives of the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame are to recognize, honor and preserve the contributions, exceptional accomplishments, and dedication of historical figures or current leaders in science or technology who have had, or are having, an impact on Long Island.
Inductees are selected impartially from among individual nominees submitted by corporate, research, and academic institutions, as well as colleagues, peers, or other personal associates.
The LITHF Nomination and Awards Selection Committee then determines the most qualified inductees according to intellectual acumen, lifetime achievement, overall impact on the advancement of science and technology, national prominence, contributions to Long Island's economic development and commitment to the Long Island community.
Bio:
Alan Alda is an acclaimed actor, director, and writer with a lifelong passion for science. As a Visiting Professor in Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, he is a founding member of the University’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and a champion for the Center’s work helping scientists learn communicate more effectively with the public about their work and why it matters.
Alan Alda became famous as surgeon Hawkeye Pierce on the TV series M*A*S*H (1972-1983). Since then, he has created a host of memorable characters on television (from Sen. Vinick on The West Wing to Alan Fitch on The Blacklist); in scores of movies, several of which he also wrote and directed, and on the stage, in such plays as Art, Glengarry Glen Ross, QED and most recently, Love Letters. He has won seven Emmy Awards and six Golden Globe Awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Aviator. In 2005, he had the distinction of publishing a best-selling book (Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I’ve Learned) and being nominated for an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony, all in a single year.
Yet exceptional as his artistic achievements are, they are rivaled by his contributions to improving communication of science to the public. His lifelong interest in science led him to host PBS’ Scientific American Frontiers from 1993 to 2005, a role he once called “the best thing I did in front of a camera.”. As a curious, thoughtful non-scientist, he talked with hundreds of scientists around the world and saw that they communicate much better when they carry on real, personal conversations about their work, rather than lecturing or falling back on technical language. He brought that insight to Stony Brook University, inspiring the University to create the Center for Communicating Science in 2009.
The Center, renamed in his honor in 2013, uses improvisational theater exercises, among other techniques, to help scientists learn to share their work and their passion more directly with the public. The Center offers courses for graduate students at Stony Brook, workshops for scientists and health professionals around the country, and outreach activities, such as the Flame Challenge, an international science-communication contest. The Center is building a network of like-minded programs around the country, with the goal of making communication skills part of the essential education of scientists.
Alan’s commitment to science has taken many forms. He is a board member of the World Science Festival in New York. He helped create the play QED, about physicist Richard Feynman, originated the role of Feynman on Broadway, and delivered an inspiring commencement speech at Caltech, where Feynman had taught. He wrote a play, Radiance, about his scientific hero, Marie Curie. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Physical Society. He has been honored with the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award for his PBS series, The Human Spark; the American Chemical Society’s Grady-Stack Award for Interpreting Chemistry for the Public, the ACS’ Public Service Award, and the National Science Board’s Public Service Award “for his contagious enthusiasm in fostering wonder and discovery by bringing complex scientific concepts to all audiences.”

THE LONGEST RIDE centres on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected and life altering connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple. Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, THE LONGEST RIDE explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love.
The film stars Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) and Scott Eastwood (Fury) in the lead roles as Luke and Sophia. Robertson and Eastwood are joined by Jack Huston (American Hustle), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) and Alan Alda (The Aviator). Directed by George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honour), produced by Marty Bowen (Fault in Our Stars), Wyck Godfrey (Twilight series), Theresa Park (Best of Me), Nicholas Sparks (Safe Haven). The screenplay is written by Craig Bolotin (Light It Up).

The Longest Ride is Nicholas Sparks' 17th romance novel and is now a major motion picture. The movie stars Britt Robertson as Sophia and art student and Scott Eastwood as Luke Collins a cowboy and risk-taking bull-rider, unlike anyone she has ever known. Together they experience the joys of love as well as the difficulties that come with Luke's dangerous career.
After being trapped in an isolated car crash, the life of elderly widower Ira Levinson (Alan Alda) becomes entwined with that of Sophia and the cowboy whom she loves. The film is told through the perspectives of these three characters as they go through their lives, both separately and together.
Ira Levinson, ninety years old and already in poor health, is just holding on; remaining alert only because his wife Ruth, who has died, appears as an image to help him remember their life together. How they met, the paintings they collected and the dark days of WW2. The scenes when Ira looks back at how he met Ruth are played by Jack Huston as Ira and the lovely Oona Chaplin as Ruth.
Two couples who have little in common, yet whose lives will converge with unexpected poignancy.
Bonnie Laufer spoke with veteran actor Alan Alda and Oona Chaplin about the film and asked Alda who has been married happily to his wife for 58 years the secret to their successful relationship.
