Why Is The Wealth of Nations So Important? Adam Smith and Classical Economics (2010)
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, (generally referred to by its shortened title The Wealth of Nations), is the magnum opus of the Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith. First published in 1776, the book offers one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds nations' wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. Through ref

[BBC Technology Documentary] Renewable Energy - NEW+ Science Documentary HD
Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.[2] Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in four distinct areas: electricity generation, hot water/space heating, motor fuels, and rural (off-grid) energy services.[3]
Based on REN21's 2014 report, renewables contributed 19 percent to our energy consumption and 22 percent to our electricity generation in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Both, modern renewables, such as hydro, wind, solar and biofuels, as well as traditional biomass, contributed in about equal parts to the global energy supply. Worldwide investments in renewable technologies amounted to more than US$214 billion in 2013, with countries like China and the United States heavily investing in wind, hydro, solar and biofuels.[4]
Renewable energy resources exist over wide geographical areas, in contrast to other energy sources, which are concentrated in a limited number of countries. Rapid deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency is resulting in significant energy security, climate change mitigation, and economic benefits.[5] In international public opinion surveys there is strong support for promoting renewable sources such as solar power and wind power.[6] At the national level, at least 30 nations around the world already have renewable energy contributing more than 20 percent of energy supply. National renewable energy markets are projected to continue to grow strongly in the coming decade and beyond.[7]
While many renewable energy projects are large-scale, renewable technologies are also suited to rural and remote areas and developing countries, where energy is often crucial in human development.[8] United Nations' Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that renewable energy has the ability to lift the poorest nations to new levels of prosperity

Some extraordinary phenomena have taken place in recent times; Hurricane Katrina, the heat wave of 2003, polar bears swimming in search of ice and vast swarms of insects enveloping an African village. But are these isolated incidents or are they omens of a greater global change?
Sir David discovers that the world is warming at an unprecedented rate, and finds out why this is now far beyond any normal allowance for cyclical fluctuation. But are humans to blame? These changes are already in motion whatever we do now, but Sir David believes that we may be able to act to prevent a catastrophe. People around the world are having to adapt their way of life as the climate changes; the Inuit in the Arctic whose hunting is now limited, the Pacific island inhabitants forced to move as their homes disappear beneath the waves, and the Siberian homes slowly sinking into the permafrost. Sir David investigates some of the possible scenarios for the future, including rising sea-levels, insect plagues and an increase in diseases.

Every week we welcome some of our favourite DJs into the club in the corner of our office. We were delighted to welcome legendary garage figure DJ EZ on to our decks.
Growing up in North London, EZ became immersed in music at an early age, hosting a slew of radio shows in the early 90s before teaming up with Kiss 100 in 1999 where he's been a mainstay since. You can catch DJ EZ on KISS FM every Friday night from 10PM - 2AM. His deep knowledge and understanding of garage led him to be chosen by Warner Music to mix the highly acclaimed 'Pure Garage' compilations and his ferocious, fast-paced DJ sets undoubtedly single him out as one of the UK's finest.
The Tottenham-born DJ has mixed the latest Fabriclive CD, which can be pre-ordered here, including old skool classics from MJ Cole, Ed Case and Sia as well as newer productions by Disclosure, SBTRKT and Royal T.

Sam has severe autism, is unable to speak and has limited understanding. When Sam's behaviour became more extreme, his family were on the brink of despair and thought Sam would need full time residential care. Then they discovered St Crispin's After School Club, which offers one-to-one support to children with significant additional support needs.
Thanks to your help we've been able to fund the Manager and two Playworkers. There they have safe, structured play and social opportunities, using the school as a base and going out into the community to use a wider range of appropriate resources. The club has really helped control Sam's behaviour and brought a smile to his face!

Through reflection over the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution the book touches upon broad topics as the division of labour, productivity and free markets.
George Stigler attributes to Smith "the most important substantive proposition in all of economics" and foundation of resource-allocation theory. It is that, under competition, owners of resources (labor, land, and capital) will use them most profitably, resulting in an equal rate of return in equilibrium for all uses (adjusted for apparent differences arising from such factors as training, trust, hardship, and unemployment).[61] He also describes Smith's theorem that "the division of labour is limited by the extent of the market" as the "core of a theory of the functions of firm and industry" and a "fundamental principle of economic organisation."[62]
Paul Samuelson finds in Smith's pluralist use of supply and demand — as applied to wages, rents, and profit -- a valid and valuable anticipation of the general equilibrium modelling of Walras a century later. Moreover, Smith's allowance for wage increases in the short and intermediate term from capital accumulation and invention added a realism missed later by Malthus, Ricardo, and Marx in their propounding a rigid subsistence-wage theory of labour supply.[63]
In noting the last words of the Wealth of Nations,
If any of the provinces of the British empire cannot be made to contribute towards the support of the whole empire, it is surely time that Great Britain should free herself from the expence of defending those provinces in time of war, and of supporting any part of their civil or military establishments in time of peace, and endeavour to accommodate her future views and designs to the real mediocrity of her circumstances.[64]
Ronald Coase suggests that if Smith's earlier proposal of granting colonies representation in the British parliament proportional to their contributions to public revenues had been followed, "there would have been no 1776, ... America would now be ruling England, and we [in America] would be today celebrating Adam Smith not simply as the author of the Wealth of Nations, but hailing him as a founding father."[65]
Mark Blaug argues that it was Smith's achievement to shift the burden of proof against those maintaining that the pursuit of self-interest does not achieve social good. But he notes Smith's relevant attention to definite institutional arrangements and process as disciplining self-interest to widen the scope of the market, accumulate capital, and grow income.[66]
Libertarian theorist Murray Rothbard, however, disagrees:
[I]t is not just that Smith's Wealth of Nations has had a terribly overblown reputation from his day to ours. The problem is that the Wealth of Nations was somehow able to blind all men, economists and laymen alike, to the very knowledge that other economists, let alone better ones, had existed and written before 1776. The Wealth of Nations exerted such a colossal impact on the world that all knowledge of previous economists was blotted out, hence Smith's reputation as Founding Father. The historical problem is this: how could this phenomenon have taken place with a book so derivative, so deeply flawed, so much less worthy than its predecessors? The answer is surely not any lucidity or clarity of style or thought. For the much-revered Wealth of Nations is a huge, sprawling, inchoate, confused tome, rife with vagueness, ambiguity and deep inner contradictions. There is of course an advantage, in the history of social thought, to a work being huge, sprawling, ambivalent and confused. There is sociological advantage to vagueness and obscurity. The bemused German Smithian, Christian J. Kraus, once referred to the Wealth of Nations as the 'Bible' of political economy. In a sense, Professor Kraus spoke wiser than he knew. For, in one way, the Wealth of Nations is like the Bible; it is possible to derive varying and contradictory interpretations from various -- or even the same -- parts of the book.

Lucy Adams was the BBC’s Human Resources Director during one of its most turbulent periods. Responsible for all aspects of employee relations, reward, training and development, she reduced the BBC management by over 30%, saving the organisation £25m a year. She helped lead the broadcaster as it dealt with a series of crises.
During her five year tenure, Lucy saw four DGs come and go, oversaw a move to another site, and coped with numerous, very public, crises including executive pay-off. This, alongside the everyday work of talent retention, development and remuneration, HR policy, and the challenges of a publicly-funded organisation working in a highly commercial, fast-moving sector with over 20,000 employees.
Lucy discusses how to deliver real change within a large, complex organisation, and why it isn’t always popular; balancing the need for quick decisions with possible moral backlash about severance; and issues relating to employee engagement. She also addresses how businesses can deal with public scrutiny and adverse publicity, and the nature of leadership and change in organisations.
Prior to working at the BBC, Lucy was Group HR Director at Serco, the government services business covering transport to nuclear facilities to schools, where she was in position during a period of extensive expansion and acquisition for the business, incorporating new employees and cultures. Prior to Serco Lucy worked for the law firm Eversheds.

"They are not forever. Nothing is forever" - these wistful words open a documentary that captures snapshots of the southern-African nation of Botswana. Lying outside mainstream tourist circuits, Botswana rarely attracts the media's attention and remains an unfamiliar land most often perceived through common Western stereotypes of Africa.
The documentary "Diamonds are not forever" is a revealing case study on this unknown region of the world. Relying on straightforward means of expression and without over-burdening the film with instructional intent, the filmmakers attempt to overcome fatalistic mainstream opinions that consign this region of Africa to political, economic and social oblivion.
With the United Nations Millennium Development Goals as their point of reference, the filmmakers examine Botswana's biggest development challenges, including environmental difficulties, especially people's limited access to drinking water, as well as the HIV/ AIDS epidemic, educational needs and natural resource management based on local community rights.
The filmmakers have avoided imposing their own narration on the film in order to give full voice to its subjects in illustrating how the Batswana people are coping with development challenges -- at the same time gradually revealing an Africa that refutes Western stereotypes. What emerges from the backdrop of individual stories is a portrait of abrupt modernization processes and uncontrolled globalization increasingly stamping their imprint on the edges of Kalahari.
Diamonds are Botswana's prime natural resource and the country's biggest source of export revenues. Yet, although diamonds are the film's leitmotif, they never appear on the screen. Their sparkle may rise over the Kalahari today, but the film's protagonists know that it will not last forever -- sometimes they say so openly, at other times words are unnecessary.
Is the film a contemporary take on Levi-Strauss' landmark "Tristes tropiques"? No -- what we see instead is a surprising world revolving on three axes: diamonds, communities, and government. The film shows that communities are not helplessly gripped in a vise between natural riches and opportunistic administration, as many conventional images of Africa would have us believe. It turns out that a different reality is possible.
The documentary "Diamonds are not forever" was produced by Red Branch Polska, financed by Red Branch Polska and Global Development Research Group, and subsidized by a grant from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the "Development Education 2010" programme operated by the Education for Democracy Foundation.

"They are not forever. Nothing is forever" - these wistful words open a documentary that captures snapshots of the southern-African nation of Botswana.

In the final episode of this landmark series charting the history of human civilisation, Andrew Marr brings the story right up to date with the twentieth century.Marr suggests that humanity found itself propelled forward by our technological brilliance but limited by the consequences of our political idiocy. Democracy confronted communism and fascism, and two world wars would underscore our political failures more than ever before. But our achievements were also astonishing, especially in the fields of science and technology. We invented machines of awesome speed and power, and reached beyond the limits of our planet. Now, more of us live longer, healthier and wealthier lives than our ancestors could ever have imagined. But Marr argues that with seven billion of us on the planet, and rising fast, either we manage the earth's natural resources better or we risk global catastrophe. The decisions we make in the next 50 years, he argues, may well decide our fate. For Marr, the most interesting part of human history lies just ahead.

BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by / Orquesta Sinfónica de la BBC dirigida por Grant Llewlyn.
Among his very first works during his time in the Royal College of Music, Britten composed music for a ballet named Plymouth Town. The plot is quite simple: it is a tale of unrequited love between a Bad Girl and a Noble Sailor that occurs in Plymouth, Cornwall, and most of the music is based upon a sea shanty named “A-Roving”. Even here, Britten is already in command of musical structures and orchestral balance, using limited resources to achieve concise expression.

Obituary: Lee Kuan Yew
(BBC News, 22 Mar 2015) - With a sense of vision and a ruthless pragmatism, Lee Kuan Yew led Singapore as it transformed from a tiny island with no natural resources into a thriving economic success.
He successfully channelled the energies of Singaporeans to create what has often been described as an economic miracle, a mixture of private and state capitalism.
Mr Lee made Singapore prosperous, modern, efficient and practically corruption-free - and overseas investors flocked in.
But while he was admired for his economic success, many expressed concern over his record on human rights.
Lee Kuan Yew was born on 16 September 1923 in Singapore, the son of third-generation Chinese immigrants.
His upbringing had a strong British influence and his grandfather dubbed him Harry Lee, a name by which he was known through most of his early life.
Mr Lee went to an English school in Singapore but his further education was disrupted by the Japanese occupation, which began in 1942.
For the next three years, he was involved in the black market and also used his command of English to work for the Japanese propaganda department.
After the war he went briefly to the London School of Economics before going up to Cambridge, where he took a double first in law.
During his time in England, Mr Lee became a devotee of the BBC Home Service, forerunner to Radio 4, and took time out to campaign for a university friend who was contesting a parliamentary seat in rural Devon.
Mr Lee, a committed socialist from his student days, returned to Singapore where he became a prominent trade union lawyer.
Prime Minister
In 1954, he was a founder and the first general secretary of the People's Action Party (PAP), a post he was to hold for most of the next 40 years
The PAP won the majority of seats in the 1959 elections and Singapore passed from overall British control and became a self-governing state.
Mr Lee took Singapore into a merger with Malaysia in 1963 but it was short-lived. Ideological tensions and a series of violent clashes between ethnic groups led to Singapore's expulsion from the federation to become fully independent.
It was a difficult move for Lee, who saw the alliance with Malaysia as a way of finally throwing off the area's colonial past. He described it as "a moment of anguish".
Commercial and military links with Malaysia were maintained, however, and Britain was encouraged to keep its base in Singapore for the joint defence of the island and Malaysia.
Mr Lee set about a huge programme of reform, designed to transform Singapore from the "cesspool of squalor and degradation" described in one contemporary account to a modern industrialised state.
Corporal punishment
To do this he maintained tight political control over every aspect of the city state, making it one of the world's most regulated societies.
Mr Lee detained some of his critics without trial, restricted the media and foreign publications, and arrested a number of journalists.
"Freedom of the press, freedom of the news media, must be subordinated to the overriding needs of the integrity of Singapore," he said.
He justified his actions by claiming that the newspapers were being financed by hostile interests abroad.
Mr Lee contended that in a developing nation some freedoms had to be sacrificed. The alternative to anti-communism was communism, and the West's concept of liberal democracy could not apply.
However, some of his critics argued that holding all the parliamentary seats should have provided him with enough security to avoid having to use such repressive measures.
As a committed anti-communist, he was accused of adopting a communist-style regime to further his policies although, unlike many communist regimes, the people of Singapore benefited financially from his rule.
From 1960 to 1980, Singapore's GNP per capita increased 15-fold.
Population control
Israel provided the model, surrounded as it was by hostile Arab states. "Like Israel, we had to leapfrog the rest of the region, and attract multinational companies," Lee said.
He understood the importance of building a good relationship with China, something that was helped by his friendship with the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.
Deng, who visited Singapore in 1978, expressed admiration for Lee's economic policies; Mr Lee was impressed with the reforms that Deng instituted in China.
