What are you going to do if your lovely router that you just bought and hooked up your whole network to ran out of ports?
Let's say I have many, many computers in my house, or in my office, and I connected all of the ports that I have here. Most routers will have four ports on them, so I have connected three computers and a printer. But suddenly I wanted to buy another computer. So, that's what the switch is for. A switch is basically kind of like a network surge protector. Just think about it this way. You plug in one output to your router, and the other ones will just split up that connection, to give you more hookups. This is called a four port switch, which will mean it will have actually five ports - one which will be uplink. It will send the signal back to the router - and the other four will split it up for four computers. Switches come in many sizes. They can come in four port size A ports, 16, 32, even 64. And of course, they have much larger more industrial switches for big industrial settings. And they also have different speeds to them. And when I say speed, I'm basically talking about the speed of the port. The basic speed is 10 megabit per second; then you have 100 megabit, which is pretty much the standard nowadays. And today, we also have faster switches which are gigabits. So you have 1,000 megabits per second. If you buy a gigabit switch, it's also wise to make sure your computer has a gigabit Ethernet port, and also that your router has a gigabit Ethernet port, otherwise you're not really thinking that that would do it.
So, if you have way to many computers for your router to handle, an Ethernet switch is definitely what you need.
A simple demonstration of the difference between an Ethernet hub and an Ethernet switch, and how this can get you into (temporary) trouble if you're not aware of how a switch works.

So, in this video I'm gonna talk about how to install your ethernet switch. So, let's say I have my laptop here, and I really want to connect it to my network. So, I'll take a little ethernet cable, and plug it to the laptop; and on the other side, of course, it has to go to my router. Let's, oh no, I'm out of ports on my router. All my ports are already full, because I've connected them to all my other computers. So, what are we gonna do?
This is where the ethernet switch comes in handy. As you can see, the ethernet switch just as a bunch of ports on it. So, to connect to the network what I have to do is first, take one of the ports that are already connected to the network, and move them over to the switch. Now, the reason I'm doing that is because I need a free port on my router, so I can connect my switch to it So I'm gonna take another ethernet cable, plug that one in; and then, the other side goes to my router.
Now, it doesn't really matter where you connect the cables to, as long as the order is correct. The specific port is of no importance. So, as long as I connected the switch to the router, everything that's connected to the switch, is also connected to the router. Basically, the switch just extends the ports that are on the router.
So, now I have to just connect my laptop over to the switch, and I'm done. Everybody's online. The laptop is connected to the switch, the switch is connected to the router, and everything that's connected to both the router and the switch, is on the network. Now, this is a really good trick if you have, for example, another room in your house that has a bunch of computers in it that you wanna connect to your network, not wirelessly, but with an actual cable. This means that you only have to really run one cable over to that room, and then just hook it up to a switch that has more ports.

You can add PoE to an Ethernet switch with something called a PoE injector, a type of midspan power sourcing equipment (PSE). This is useful for those situations where its difficult, impossible, or simply not cost-effective to replace your existing Ethernet switches.
The INJ-24 has several convenient features that make the job especially easy for integrators. It supports PoE+ for greater power output, up to 30W, and automatically adjusts the power as required by the attached device. It supports Gigabit Ethernet connections. And it supports both 24V and 48V power input, so in many cases, you can connect it to the same power supply used by your Ethernet switch.

This video is just a 15 minute introduction to 10 gigabit ethernet and where it is used effectively (hint: it has nothing to do with your internet connection). 10 gigabit, for now at least, works a little differently than gigabit. It's not quite the same upgrade as going from 100 megabit to 1 gigabit, but it is similar in a lot of ways.
In this video we want to indtroduce you to 10 gigabit ethernet and introduce some hardware from Intel, Marvell and Netgear that operates at 10 gigabit. We'll also take a quick look at SFP+/fiberoptic 10 gigabit ethernet, and the ASRock X99 WS motherboard that has built-in Intel 10 gigabit adapters. 10 gig ethernet is so fast that most computers just can't push 10 gigabits of traffic through a single queue; today it is like it was when gigabit ethernet first came out.
We have a lot of content coming up for 10 gigabit and this video is a good introduction if you are familiar with networking concepts and have at least a basic understanding of how networks are put together. We mention a lot of topics that will be making an appearance in the future, and we will talk about why 10 gigabit "works differently" right now than gigabit ethernet.
This video will help organize the videos we're going to post to our other channels and we will provide a reference back to this video that provides an overview of 10 gigabit and what it means for us in general terms.

A network switch or switching hub is a computer networking device that connects network segments or network devices. The term commonly refers to a multi-port network bridge that processes and routes data at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. Switches that additionally process data at the network layer (layer 3) and above are often referred to as layer-3 switches or multilayer switches.
The first Ethernet switch was introduced by Kalpana in 1990.
A switch is a telecommunication device which receives a message from any device connected to it and then transmits the message only to that device for which the message was meant. This makes the switch a more intelligent device than a hub (which receives a message and then transmits it to all the other devices on its network.) The network switch plays an integral part in most modern Ethernet local area networks (LANs). Mid-to-large sized LANs contain a number of linked managed switches. Small office/home office (SOHO) applications typically use a single switch, or an all-purpose converged device such as a residential gateway to access small office/home broadband services such as DSL or cable internet. In most of these cases, the end-user device contains a router and components that interface to the particular physical broadband technology. User devices may also include a telephone interface for VoIP.

Hub A common connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports. When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets. Repair Linksys 24-port Ethernet Switch
Originally recorded October 5, 2013. The other day my YouTube video I was watching cut out and wouldn't replay, nor would any other website come up. I went down to my network equipment and found that my Linksys Etherfast EF2124 24-port 10/100 switch had every light on it flashing in unison. Killing power for a few minutes just made it more angry, now all the lights would come on and stay on. Today I had some time to open it up and see what went wrong--China. Faulty, blown, bulging capacitors due to heat from a resistor near by. Fortunately it was just the power supply. 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Repair
A different vid this time that may be boring to some of you DJs LOL. I repaired a 8 port gigabit Ethernet which died and failed to power up. I could have tossed it out but I had to open it up lol!! I found 4 "swollen" electrolytic capacitors on the main board that I replaced and this restored power to this switch. This vid will show the DYI repair process. I spent about $8.00 for parts to repair a $80.00 network switch.

It will send the signal back to the router - and the other four will split it up for four computers. Switches come in many sizes. They can come in four port size A ports, 16, 32, even 64. And of course, they have much larger more industrial switches for big industrial settings. And they also have different speeds to them. And when I say speed, I'm basically talking about the speed of the port. The basic speed is 10 megabit per second; then you have 100 megabit, which is pretty much the standard nowadays. And today, we also have faster switches which are gigabits. So you have 1,000 megabits per second. If you buy a gigabit switch, it's also wise to make sure your computer has a gigabit Ethernet port, and also that your router has a gigabit Ethernet port, otherwise you're not really thinking that that would do it.
So, if you have way to many computers for your router to handle, an Ethernet switch is definitely what you need.

So, in this video I'm gonna talk about how to install your ethernet switch. So, let's say I have my laptop here, and I really want to connect it to my network. So, I'll take a little ethernet cable, and plug it to the laptop; and on the other side, of course, it has to go to my router. Let's, oh no, I'm out of ports on my router. All my ports are already full, because I've connected them to all my other computers. So, what are we gonna do?
This is where the ethernet switch comes in handy. As you can see, the ethernet switch just as a bunch of ports on it. So, to connect to the network what I have to do is first, take one of the ports that are already connected to the network, and move them over to the switch. Now, the reason I'm doing that is because I need a free port on my router, so I can connect my switch to it So I'm gonna take another ethernet cable, plug that one in; and then, the other side goes to my router.
Now, it doesn't really matter where you connect the cables to, as long as the order is correct. The specific port is of no importance. So, as long as I connected the switch to the router, everything that's connected to the switch, is also connected to the router. Basically, the switch just extends the ports that are on the router.
So, now I have to just connect my laptop over to the switch, and I'm done. Everybody's online. The laptop is connected to the switch, the switch is connected to the router, and everything that's connected to both the router and the switch, is on the network. Now, this is a really good trick if you have, for example, another room in your house that has a bunch of computers in it that you wanna connect to your network, not wirelessly, but with an actual cable. This means that you only have to really run one cable over to that room, and then just hook it up to a switch that has more ports.

The INJ-24 has several convenient features that make the job especially easy for integrators. It supports PoE+ for greater power output, up to 30W, and automatically adjusts the power as required by the attached device. It supports Gigabit Ethernet connections. And it supports both 24V and 48V power input, so in many cases, you can connect it to the same power supply used by your Ethernet switch.

This video is just a 15 minute introduction to 10 gigabit ethernet and where it is used effectively (hint: it has nothing to do with your internet connection). 10 gigabit, for now at least, works a little differently than gigabit. It's not quite the same upgrade as going from 100 megabit to 1 gigabit, but it is similar in a lot of ways.
In this video we want to indtroduce you to 10 gigabit ethernet and introduce some hardware from Intel, Marvell and Netgear that operates at 10 gigabit. We'll also take a quick look at SFP+/fiberoptic 10 gigabit ethernet, and the ASRock X99 WS motherboard that has built-in Intel 10 gigabit adapters. 10 gig ethernet is so fast that most computers just can't push 10 gigabits of traffic through a single queue; today it is like it was when gigabit ethernet first came out.
We have a lot of content coming up for 10 gigabit and this video is a good introduction if you are familiar with networking concepts and have at least a basic understanding of how networks are put together. We mention a lot of topics that will be making an appearance in the future, and we will talk about why 10 gigabit "works differently" right now than gigabit ethernet.
This video will help organize the videos we're going to post to our other channels and we will provide a reference back to this video that provides an overview of 10 gigabit and what it means for us in general terms.

The other day my YouTube video I was watching cut out and wouldn't replay, nor would any other website come up.
I went down to my network equipment and found that my Linksys Etherfast EF2124 24-port 10/100 switch had every light on it flashing in unison. Killing power for a few minutes just made it more angry, now all the lights would come on and stay on.
Today I had some time to open it up and see what went wrong--China. Faulty, blown, bulging capacitors due to heat from a resistor near by. Fortunately it was just the power supply.
In this video you come for a front seat view as we discover together why this switch failed and if it still works, and how it can be repaired. This is not of course the best repair method there, others would have fixed the existing power supply. But, based on the parts I had on hand, this was another NO-COST FIX!

A different vid this time that may be boring to some of you DJs LOL. I repaired a 8 port gigabit Ethernet which died and failed to power up. I could have tossed it out but I had to open it up lol!! I found 4 "swollen" electrolytic capacitors on the main board that I replaced and this restored power to this switch. This vid will show the DYI repair process. I spent about $8.00 for parts to repair a $80.00 network switch.

Meine Rezension bezieht sich auf GS108 GE 8-Port Lüfterlos" per Verkauf/Versand für den Preis von 21,50€ (Blitzangebot).
Ich habe bereits einmal, benötigte nun in absehbarer Zeit einen zweiten. Als der dann im auftauchte, griff zu, da es an dem Gerät nichts zu bemängeln gibt und mindestens vier Plätze zu belegen gedachte. Es sollte daher lieber 8er 5er sein, zumal selben wie im hatte.
Zum Switch:
Robuste Bauweise dank Metallgehäuse. Wirkt wertig, liegt großzügig bemessenen beigelegten Gummifüßchen Ankleben recht stabil, ohne unter Zuglast Kabel zu verrutschen. Entsprechende Löcher in Unterseite Switches erlauben Wandmontage.
Die Geschwindigkeit keinen Anlass zur Kritik. Einzig das Netzkabel älteren kleinen Schalter, ihn vom zu trennen. Im neuen befindet dafür kleiner Netzwerkbuchsen.
Fazit:
Der erste verrichtet Juli 2012 zuverlässig seinen Dienst, weshalb diesem gleiche Verlässlichkeit baue.
Wer irgendwo offen sichtbar deponieren will/muss, vielleicht doch zu einem anderen Modell greifen. Ansonsten es mir klare Kaufempfehlung!

1. Port 1 und 8 defekt
2. 1 LED wird generell angezeigt.
3. funktioniert gesamte mehr, kam keinem ins Internet.
Solche Probleme hatte noch wenn so einfach billig waren.
Darauf mir Linksys SE4008-EJ (8-Port) gekauft, absolutes TOP hohem Datendurchsatz.

Der Gerätemaße 141mm x 85mm breite x 27.5mm höhe.
Fazit: Sehr preisgünstiger funktionierender, stromsparender Bietet vom Design was fürs Auge von Nerds.

Designing and developing the Ethernet Switch Framework for FreeBSD.
FreeBSD is making great strides to be fully functional on many typical WLAN routers. Furthest along is support for devices based on the Atheros series of System-on-a-Chip products. Thanks to Adrian Chadds relentless work, many devices can be used with FreeBSD-current for routing between LAN and WLAN interface. The Ethernet Switch Framework closes one of the last remaining driver gaps to fully enable build an embedded FreeBSD version for such devices.
Currently under development, the Ethernet Switch framework enables configuration of built-in ethernet switch controllers. This allows users to create powerful networking setups without any additional hardware. Even though these routers are typically not very expensive, the switch controllers offer a number of features typically only found in more expensive enterprise equipment. This allows users to create interesting and powerful network setups at home or in small offices.
This talk will present the current state of development, the architecture of the driver framework and will detail the implementation of a typical switch driver. It will also go into some of the architectural challenges that needed to be solved to deal with hardware configurations typical for embedded systems that are uncommon in the world of regular desktop and server systems.

This talk will introduce you to Industrial Ethernet Switches and their vulnerabilities. These are switches used in industrial environments, like substations, factories, refineries, ports, or other other homes of industrial automation. In other words: DCS, PCS, ICS & SCADA switches. It is a very good companion talk to Damn Vulnerable Chemical Process? Own your own critical infrastructures today!
This talk will introduce you to Industrial Ethernet Switches and their vulnerabilities. These are switches used in industrial environments, like substations, factories, refineries, ports, or other other homes of industrial automation. In other words: DCS, PCS, ICS & SCADA switches.
The researchers focus on attacking the management plane of these switches, because we all know that industrial system protocols lack authentication or cryptographic integrity. Thus, compromising any switch allows the creation of malicious firmwares for further MITM manipulation of a live process.
Not only will vulnerabilities be disclosed for the first time (exclusively at 31C3), but the methods of finding those vulnerabilities will be shared. All vulnerabilities disclosed will be in the default configuration state of the devices. While these vulnerabilities have been responsibly disclosed to the vendors, SCADA/ICS patching in live environments tends to take 1-3 years. At least three vendors switches will be examined: Siemens, GE, Garrettcom.
Therefore, this presentation matters to any hackers or anarchists, who believe they have a right to examine the resilience and security of the infrastructures that support their communities.

Such MITM manipulation can lead to the plant or process shutting down (think: nuclear reactor SCRAM) or getting into a unknown and hazardous state (think: damaging a blast furnace at a steel mill)
Not only will vulnerabilities be disclosed for the first time, but the methods of finding those vulnerabilities will be shared. All vulnerabilities disclosed will be in the default configuration state of the devices. While these vulnerabilities have been responsibly disclosed to the vendors, SCADA/ICS patching in live environments tends to take 1-3 years. Because of this patching lag, the researchers will also be providing live mitigations that owner/operators can use immediately to protect themselves. At least four vendors switches will be examined: Siemens, GE, Garrettcom and Opengear.
Colin Cassidy is a security consultant for IOActive where he focuses on Industrial Control Systems. He has a strong development and software engineering background. He is also a seasoned leader in the areas of security and software engineering. Before joining IOActive, Cassidy served for a number of years as Technical Manager and Security Technical Lead for IGE Energy Services, Ltd, part of GE Energy. He has hands-on experience with PowerOn Fusion, a leading Outage Management System/Distribution Management System (OMS/DMS) solution for electricity distribution management. He also led a team of developers in producing new functionality within the core product and worked with customers to understand their requirements. Colin Cassidy has a BSc (Hons) in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow.
