Victory Gardens for All
Victory Gardens for All
Founded by Charlotte Anthony, Victory Gardens for All installs sustainable gardens that closely mimic natural growing environments all across Eugene. Within five hours, the Victory Gardens team can transform a patch of lawn or dirt into a functional garden, with ready-to-eat plants in roughly four weeks. A small team (often 4-8 people) work together to install gardens in people's front or backyards. A fee pays for plants, soil amendments and compost, but all fees collected go directly into your garden -- no money is retained by the group. A part of receiving a garden includes volunteering to help create two more gardens for other Victory Garden recipients, fostering community growth and connecting people with similar interests -- namely, sustainable gardening. To request a garden or volunteer with the team, call 541-653-0149. Learn more at www.victorygardensforall.org ~~~~~ Created by Alex Strack for MyEugene.org

Crockett's Victory Garden
Crockett's Victory Garden
Back in 1975 James Underwood Crockett hosted a gardening show on WGBH called "Crockett's Victory Garden". The show was extremely successful. It encouraged everyone in New England to plant a Victory Garden! Jim was down to earth and personable which is the main reason the show was so successful. In 1979 Jim died from cancer. Since then the show has steadily went down hill. This channel is designed to arouse enthusiasm in the show now collecting dust in WGBH's vaults. We must band together and force WGBH's hand to release the show at very least on DVD. The modern Victory Garden show has nothing to do with the original concept of the show. With food prices out of control never before has there been a need for a show such as Crockett's Victory Garden to encourage all to take up the spade and combat the high price of food.

Chicago Victory Gardens: Yesterday and Tomorrow
Chicago Victory Gardens: Yesterday and Tomorrow
During World War II, Chicago led the nation in urban food production with its Victory Gardens program of 1500 community gardens and more than 250000 home gardens. The city's North Park neighborhood was also home to the largest Victory Garden in the United States. In fact, the Victory Gardens campaign in Chicago was so successful that it was emulated across the country. Seventy years later, Chicago continues this tradition with an estimated 700 community gardens. In 2010, LaManda Joy launched the Peterson Garden Project, on land that was part of an original World War II Victory Garden from 1942-1945. The Peterson Garden is Chicago's largest community-allotment vegetable garden, with 157 plots tended by community members growing only organic vegetables. Volunteers and students also tend several garden plots and donate their produce to local food pantries and homeless shelters. Speaker Biography: LaManda Joy is an award-winning gardener, blogger and founder of Chicago's Peterson Garden Project.
