Bernie Sanders on 'The View' FULL interview
Washington (CNN)—Bernie Sanders says his criticism of Hillary Clinton's "shouting" on gun control has nothing to do with her gender.
"What can I say -- that's just not the case," the Vermont senator and Democratic presidential contender said Sunday in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."
Sanders criticized the "shouting" from both sides on gun issues in the first Democratic presidential debate. Clinton said Saturday in Iowa that Sanders' remarks came with a gender-related undercurrent.
She said: "I'm not shouting. It's just that when women talk, some people think we're shouting."
Sanders on Sunday laughed at her suggestion that his remarks were about gender.
"All that I can say is I am very proud of my record on women's issues. I certainly do not have a problem with women speaking out -- and I think what the secretary is doing there is taking words and misapplying them," Sanders told Tapper.
"What I would say is if we are going to make some progress in dealing with these horrific massacres that we're seeing, is that people have got to start all over this country talking to each other," he said. "It's not Hillary Clinton. You have some people who are shouting at other people all across this country. You know that. This nation is divided on this issue."
Sanders leaves little room to his left on most issues. But he has represented a rural state that largely lacks gun restrictions -- allowing both Clinton and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, another Democratic presidential candidate, to hit him on gun control.
Sanders, meanwhile, criticized Clinton over her previous support for the "Defense of Marriage Act" -- a law that defined marriage as between one man and one woman, which then-President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1996 after it was approved by a Republican-led Congress.
"I think what my husband believed -- and there was certainly evidence to support it -- is that there was enough political momentum to amend the Constitution of the United States of America, and that there had to be some way to stop that," Clinton said Friday.
But Sanders disputed that characterization of the law, which he opposed at the time.
He said the measure was pushed by GOP lawmakers -- and "many of them, I'm sorry to say, were homophobic."
"I think everybody at the time knew that it was simply homophobic legislation," Sanders said.
"That legislation was anti-gay legislation. It was playing off the fears of a lot of Americans," he added. "Now the good news -- as Hillary Clinton just indicated -- the culture has changed radically. ... We have come a long, long way since that vote in 1996."

Bernie Sanders Absolutely Glowing in Interview on CNN - Even Goes After Establishment Media!
Bernie Sanders said new polls that show him drawing even with front-runner Hillary Clinton in key primary states are stunning.
"You want me to tell you the truth?" he asked to CNN's Wolf Blitzer in an interview Thursday when asked about his strong showing.
"Yes, I'm stunned," Sanders said. "Look, we have a message that I believed from day one was going to resonate with the American people. ... Did I think (the issues) would resonate as quickly as they have? The answer is no."
Sanders credited his focus on middle-class economics and anti-establishment message as keys to his success.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday showed Sanders continues to build momentum against Clinton, puling even with her in Iowa, 41% to 40%. That's up from a 21-point deficit with Clinton two months ago. Other recent polling that has shown Sanders ahead in another key early primary state, New Hampshire, although Clinton still maintains double-digit leads in national polling.
Sanders said his campaign has received contributions from more than 400,000 people with an average donation of $31.20, while eschewing raising MONEY for super PACs.
As for Clinton's inability to move past the scandal over her use of a private email server as secretary of state, Sanders wouldn't quite say it was hurting her standing.
"I think it's clearly not helping her," he said.
The Vermont senator, who serves as an independent in Congress and has identified as a democratic socialist, was pressed on whether he was a true Democrat.
He said it's "no secret" he's an independent in Congress, but he has always caucused with Democrats.
"I am going to be doing everything that I can to see that the Democratic Party is successful in November," he said.
"I am a proud progressive," he added in response to Clinton telling an Ohio crowd on Thursday that she's a moderate.
He also didn't get into whether Vice President Joe Biden should jump into the race, an option the vice president is weighing with this family.
"I neither want him to jump or not want him to jump in," Sanders said. "That's a personal decision that he has to make."
Sanders also weighed in on the Republican side of the race, including GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
"I think he's obviously a very flamboyant guy," Sanders said. "I think he's clearly doing a lot better in the Republican process that anyone thought he would. I am sad to say that in the year 2015, people like Trump are using racism as a way to attract votes."
The senator specifically hit Trump for comments he made about some illegal immigrants being rapists and criminals.
"His remarks were totally objectionable and they were racist," Sanders said.

An issue Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton faces as she courts organized labor is a potential enthusiasm gap. Clinton, the Democratic front-runner, has racked up a string of formal endorsements, but many rank-and-file union members remain drawn to Sanders. Clinton has more than a dozen endorsements from national unions, representing more than 10 million members. Even so, she may have a bit of trouble securing the Democratic nomination. Her commanding lead over Sanders has widened in recent weeks, but the passion gap indicates Clinton has more work to do in wooing union workers.

Lagging behind Clinton in 2016 bid, Sanders boosts staff, spending

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is boosting the size of his campaign staff and increasing state budgets in his challenge against the frontrunner for the party's nomination, Hillary Clinton.
Over the past six weeks, Clinton widened her lead over Sanders in opinion polls both nationally and in early states in the nominating process for the 2016 presidential election. She now leads Sanders by 20 points nationally, with the support of 54 percent of Democrats versus 34 percent for the U.S. senator from Vermont, according to the most recent Reuters/Ipsos polling.
Sanders' campaign manager Jeff Weaver told Reuters that the campaign rewrote its budgets last week, doubling them to add more staff in each of the states holding nominating contests on March 1.
A dozen states hold votes that day and award delegates on a proportional basis rather than awarding all to the winner, so Weaver said the campaign calculated that it is important to compete hard in all of them rather than skip states where Sanders may not perform as well as Clinton.
Weaver said the campaign has also begun adding two dozen additional paid field staffers in the first contest in Iowa, which holds caucuses on February 1.
Clinton has capitalized on a series of strong debate performances, and she received wide praise for enduring 11 hours of questioning during an October congressional hearing about her handling of the attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi in 2012. As a former secretary of State, she is seen as the strongest candidate to handle matters of international consequence.
The recent attacks in Paris are helping her in the Democratic primary race, said Democratic pollster Tom Jensen of the firm Public Policy Polling.
"Eighty percent trust her most on national security," Jensen said.
Even as the national conversation is moving toward those issues, Weaver said other metrics show Sanders is on the rise in the Democratic primary electorate, especially among voters who care about economic issues. In a Quinnipiac poll of Iowa Democrats released on Wednesday, 47 percent said they trusted Sanders most to handle the economy compared to 42 percent for Clinton.
"I think we're getting a second look," he said.
In an effort to try to erase Clinton's hefty lead with Latino voters, the Sanders campaign has begun airing Spanish language radio ads and delivering Spanish language mailings to Democratic voters in Nevada.

DES MOINES — In the hours after the deadly attacks in Paris, CBS News significantly reworked its plans for the Democratic presidential debate it is hosting here on Saturday night to focus more on issues of terrorism, national security and foreign relations.
Steve Capus, the executive editor of CBS News and the executive producer of “CBS Evening News,” said in an interview late Friday that he was in the middle of a rehearsal for the debate when news broke about the slaughter in Paris.
The CBS News team immediately shifted gears and reformulated questions to make them more directly related to the attacks. Mr. Capus said it was important for the debate to go on because the world looks to the American president for leadership during international crises.
“American leadership is put to the test,” Mr. Capus said. “The entire world is looking to the White House. These people are vying to take over this office.”

2nd Democratic Debate: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley Hosted by CBS. Face The Nation host John Dickerson and CBS’ Nancy Cordes are the co-moderators for tonight’s Democratic Debate on CBS, joined by Kathie Obradovich and Kevin Cooney, which kicks of at 9 p.m. EST.

Bernie Sanders to Talk at Georgetown on Democratic Socialism in America.
November 18, 2015 – Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will speak at Georgetown this week about what it means to be a democratic socialist in America.
The talk, which takes place on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the university’s historic Gaston Hall, is sponsored by the university’s newly created Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service at the McCourt School of Public Policy.
Sanders’ talk will be webcast live at politics.georgetown.edu.
“This speech is one of those defining moments in a presidential campaign,” said Mo Elleithee, the institute’s executive director and a 20-year veteran of national politics. “For weeks, Senator Sanders and his team have been signalling that he intends to have a thoughtful discussion about what it means to be a ‘democratic socialist.’ We are psyched he chose Georgetown as the place to have that conversation.”
The institute has extended an invitation to every major candidate in the 2016 presidential election to speak at Georgetown.
Following his remarks, Sanders will engage in a question-and-answer session with the university community, moderated by Elleithee. A Georgetown University ID is required for entry into the event.
Georgetown students, faculty and staff can share questions and join the conversation at @GUPolitics and #BernieAtGU.
Launched in the fall of 2015, the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service is dedicated to reconnecting young people with the idea that politics is a noble vehicle for public service.

PREPARED REMARKS
Senator Bernie Sanders on Democratic Socialism in the United States
NOVEMBER 19, 2015
In his inaugural remarks in January 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt looked out at the nation and this is what he saw.
He saw tens of millions of its citizens denied the basic necessities of life.
He saw millions of families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hung over them day by day.
He saw millions denied education, recreation, and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children.
He saw millions lacking the means to buy the products they needed and by their poverty and lack of disposable income denying employment to many other millions.
He saw one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished.
And he acted. Against the ferocious opposition of the ruling class of his day, people he called economic royalists, Roosevelt implemented a series of programs that put millions of people back to work, took them out of poverty and restored their faith in government. He redefined the relationship of the federal government to the people of our country. He combatted cynicism, fear and despair. He reinvigorated democracy. He transformed the country.
And that is what we have to do today.
And, by the way, almost everything he proposed was called “socialist.” Social Security, which transformed life for the elderly in this country was “socialist.” The concept of the “minimum wage” was seen as a radical intrusion into the marketplace and was described as “socialist.” Unemployment insurance, abolishing child labor, the 40-hour work week, collective bargaining, strong banking regulations, deposit insurance, and job programs that put millions of people to work were all described, in one way or another, as “socialist.” Yet, these programs have become the fabric of our nation and the foundation of the middle class.
Thirty years later, in the 1960s, President Johnson passed Medicare and Medicaid to provide health care to millions of senior citizens and families with children, persons with disabilities and some of the most vulnerable people in this county. Once again these vitally important programs were derided by the right wing as socialist programs that were a threat to our American way of life.
That was then. Now is now.
Today, in 2015, despite the Wall Street crash of 2008, which drove this country into the worst economic downturn since the Depression, the American people are clearly better off economically than we were in 1937.
But, here is a very hard truth that we must acknowledge and address. Despite a huge increase in technology and productivity, despite major growth in the U.S. and global economy, tens of millions of American families continue to lack the basic necessities of life, while millions more struggle every day to provide a minimal standard of living for their families. The reality is that for the last 40 years the great middle class of this country has been in decline and faith in our political system is now extremely low.
The rich get much richer. Almost everyone else gets poorer. Super PACs funded by billionaires buy elections. Ordinary people don’t vote. We have an economic and political crisis in this country and the same old, same old establishment politics and economics will not effectively address it.
If we are serious about transforming our country, if we are serious about rebuilding the middle class, if we are serious about reinvigorating our democracy, we need to develop a political movement which, once again, is prepared to take on and defeat a ruling class whose greed is destroying our nation. The billionaire class cannot have it all. Our government belongs to all of us, and not just the one percent.
We need to create a culture which, as Pope Francis reminds us, cannot just be based on the worship of money. We must not accept a nation in which billionaires compete as to the size of their super-yachts, while children in America go hungry and veterans sleep out on the streets. I am really sorry to CBS, I know you will probably force me to take this down, but I just feel like as a US citizen I should have the right to share videos of events that are crucial to our democracy. I hope you can look past corporate greed and just let me do my part to be involved in the political process. I thank you for hosting the debate, and I genuinely think you did a fine job of it. I know it costs money for you to do that, but it will earn you a great deal of consumer good-will if you don't squash this video. Thanks!

The first Dem debate starts at 8:30 PM ET at the Wynn Hotel in
Las Vegas. It features Hillary Clinton, Vermont’s Sen. Bernie Sanders and Those Other Guys – former Maryland Gov.
Martin O’Malley, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee – but, alas, no Joe Biden.
Anderson Cooper is chief air traffic controller tonight,
joined by CNN’s Dana Bash and CNN en Espanol’s Juan Carlos Lopez.
Don Lemon, CNN’s popular on-air loose cannon, also will ask questions,
though the network has tried to wrangle him — to whatever degree
that’s possible — by assigning him to ask questions he’s selected
from pre-screened Facebook and Instagram questions.
Trump explaining to Fox News why he’s tweeting:
“Well, a lot of people have asked me to. I have 4 and a half and
I have 4 and a half or 5 million on Facebook and they’ve sort of merged.
I have over 10 million people and it’s been an amazing thing.
It’s like owning a newspaper without the losses, it’s sort of great
and it’s just been amazing. I don’t need a lot of sleep.
I enjoy my life. If you enjoy your life, you don’t have to sleep so
much, What happened was, a lot of people have been tweeting, ‘will
you please tweet?’ and I said well it’s going to be a pretty boring
debate, I think…. we’re going to have a lot of fun.”

COMPLETE: https://youtu.be/6ojQnTtPoPE. Here Are The Winners And Losers From The CNN Democratic Debate. Both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton did well, while the other Democrats were left behind. Here are tonight’s winners and losers from the CNN Democratic debate.
Winners:
1 a). Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) – O’Malley came after Sanders hard on his record on guns, but the Senator from Vermont delivered the line of the night when he raged at the media and spoke for the American people by telling Anderson Cooper that people are sick of hearing about Clinton’s emails and want to discuss real issues. Sanders made no mistakes while clearly delivering his message. If this were America’s first national introduction to Bernie Sanders, many people should come away impressed.
1 b). Former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton – Hillary Clinton defended her record, looked presidential, made no gaffes, and was very smooth on the stage. Hillary Clinton comes out of this debate unscathed, and for a frontrunner that is the most important goal. Clinton was good in this debate. She has been on the national debate stage before, and it showed.
Losers:
1). Jim Webb – Former Sen. Webb was one of the candidates who complained about the lack of equal airtime, but when a candidate is at 1% they should be thankful that they are even on the stage. Webb was too far to the right for Democrats on guns, and many of his answers were not in step with today’s Democratic Party.
2). Lincoln Chafee – Chafee dropped the ball when he was asked about his first vote in the Senate, and he said that he was new to the Senate and had just gotten there because he was appointed to the seat after his father died. Anderson Cooper made it sound like the man voted yes when he didn’t know what he was voting for. Chafee is barely registering in the polls, and he showed why tonight. He is the token fringe oddball candidate that the Democratic field always seems to have at least one of, but he also should not have been on the debate stage.
3). Martin O’Malley – Martin O’Malley tried to go after Bernie Sanders, but his attack failed. The debate was symptomatic of O’Malley’s entire campaign. There wasn’t room on the stage for both Sanders and O’Malley, and when push came to shove, Sanders dominated O’Malley. When O’Malley tried to criticize Clinton, she reminded him that he endorsed her in 2008. O’Malley is being squeezed out of the Democratic race.
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton finally face off. The first Dem debate starts at 8:30 PM ET at the Wynn Hotel in
