Named and shamed: Perth food outlets prosecuted by the WA Health Department

Could this level of great build-up and filth have happened in the space of five monts?

How unclean does a food outlet have to be before it can be successfully prosecuted by its local council?

If a northern suburbs experience is anything to go by, then an operator gets plenty of chances to bring themselves up to standard.

Perth restaurant's wonton lack of hygeine

Long-time diners at this now shut Chinese restaurant could be excused for saying "wok on earth?" after pictures emerged of the filthy state of the kitchen.

WAtoday recently highlighted a Chinese restaurant that was being de-fitted shortly after it closed.

Work crews were shocked to discover build-ups of grease and other horrors which suggested the kitchen hadn't been cleaned in years.

Less than seven months before it closed its doors, the restaurant failed a health inspection by officers from a northern suburbs council, in part because of the presence of cockroaches

"The city undertook an inspection . . . and the restaurant owners were presented with a written requirement to undertake significant cleaning and arrange pest control for cockroaches," the council's chief executive said in a statement.

This indicates, however, the restaurant's unhygienic state happened in the months before closure – which, to one of the work crew, made no sense.

"There is no way what we saw happened in five months. The mess in there was from years of neglect," the worker said.

A spokeswoman for the Food Safety Information Council said that as customers rarely venture into kitchens, they usually formed their impressions on food safety from the 'front of house'.

"We act on trust most of the time," she said.

In 2015, the WA Health Department has prosecuted 16 food outlets over uncleanliness,.

As well as copping fines between $7000 to $38,000, nosheries are "named and shamed" on the department's website for two years.
