Radovan Tadic, a Croat born of Bosnian parents, returned to Sarajevo in October 1992 and again from January through May 1993. Now a filmmaker in Paris, Tadic provides an intimate, almost surreal documentation of the lives of about a dozen Sarajevans who lived under siege warfare for 23 months before a shaky truce bega two weeks ago, enforced by a NATO threat of bombings.
The filmmaker constantly finds warmth, humour, bravery – the sheer humanity of the people in the face of the constant soundtrack of explosions and small arms fire. But it is difficult to avoid the conclusions of psychiatrist Liliana Orouch. “When all strength fades, suicide tendencies manifest themselves in various ways,” she says. “You often hear the phrase, ‘I no longer have any desire to live,’ ‘It’s all the same if I’m hit by a bullet,’ ‘I pray to God that I am killed’ …People do it out of despair. They say to themselves, ‘I’m leaving.’ “

It’s an achingly remorseful chronicle of life in the depths of the Serbian shelling and sniping. To see Sarajevo in the 1990s is to catch a timeless glimpse of other cities in other ghastly times. The Warsaw and Leningrad of 50 years ago come to mind. But in the midst of hollowed buildings and daily carnage, Tadic is intent on probing Sarajevo for a moral pulse.

Domovinski rat! The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992. In Croatia, the war is primarily referred to as the Homeland War (Domovinski rat) and also as the Greater-Serbian aggression (Velikosrpska agresija).[25][26] In Serbian sources, War in Croatia (Rat u Hrvatskoj) is the most commonly used public term.[27]
A majority of Croats wanted Croatia to leave Yugoslavia and become a sovereign country, while many ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, supported by Serbia,[28][29] opposed the secession and wanted Croatia to remain a part of Yugoslavia. Most Serbs effectively sought a new Serb state within a Yugoslav federation, including areas of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina with ethnic Serb majorities or significant minorities,[30][31] and attempted to conquer as much of Croatia as possible.[32][33][34] In 2007, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) returned a guilty verdict against Milan Martić, one of the Serb leaders in Croatia, for having colluded with Slobodan Milošević and others to create a "unified Serbian state".[35] Between 2008 and 2012, the ICTY had prosecuted Croatian generals Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markač and Ivan Čermak for alleged involvement in the crimes related to Operation Storm. Čermak was acquitted outright, and the convictions of Gotovina and Markač were later overturned by an ICTY Appeals Panel.[36][37] The International Court of Justice dismissed Croatia and Serbia genocide claims in 2015. While it reaffirmed that serious crimes against civilians were committed by both sides and that these acts constitute some basic elements of genocide, it ruled that the genocidal intent was not present.[38]
The JNA tried to keep Croatia within Yugoslavia by occupying all of Croatia.[39][40] After they failed to do this, Serbian forces established the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) within Croatia. After the ceasefire of January 1992 and international recognition of the Republic of Croatia as a sovereign state,[41][42] the front lines were entrenched, the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) was deployed,[43] and combat became largely intermittent in the following three years. During that time, the RSK encompassed 13,913 square kilometers (5,372 sq mi), more than a quarter of Croatia.[44] In 1995, Croatia launched two major offensives known as Operation Flash and Operation Storm,[12][45] which would effectively end the war in its favor. The remaining United Nations Transitional Authority for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) zone was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia by 1998.[13][17]
The war ended with Croatian victory, as it achieved the goals it had declared at the beginning of the war: independence and preservation of its borders.[12][13] 21–25% of Croatia's economy was ruined, with an estimated US$37 billion in damaged infrastructure, lost output, and refugee-related costs.[46] A total of 20,000 people were killed in the war,[47] and refugees were displaced on both sides. The Serb and Croatian governments began to progressively cooperate with each other but tension remains, in part due to verdicts by the ICTY and lawsuits filed by each country against the other.[48][49]

The end to the fighting in Bosnia has brought more anguish to some
families who can now retrieve the bodies of family members killed in the war. Police and court officials from Zenica Thursday (18/1) recovered the first bodies from the area as weeping relatives looked on.
In another development, Bosnian soldiers have been pulling back from their frontline positions near Brcko in preparation for Friday's deadline for withdrawal under the Dayton peace agreement.

is the lot of the Sehic family. From their windows, they can see
the streets and buildings controlled by the Serbs forces. All the
buildings have been riddled with bullets and hit by countless
shells. but still those who live there refuse to leave.

Many Bosnian Serbs are taking drastic measures as they flee Sarajevo suburbs ahead of a handover to Bosnian government control.
Some have set fire to their houses or dug up remains of loved ones rather than leave them to the Muslim-led government.
In another part of the city, a funeral was held for the 55-year-old woman killed in a rocket attack on a tram in Sarajevo.
But British troops are doing their bit to keep the Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats apart with the setting up of a demilitarised zone.
Under the Dayton accord, signed last month in Paris, four main Serb-held districts of Sarajevo are to come under the Muslim-led government's control.
But many of the Serbs say they prefer to leave Sarajevo than stay when
the capital is reunited.
They fear ill-treatment or revenge by the government.
As well as destroying their property, Serbs have begun digging up the cemeteries to take their dead relatives with them as they move out of the city.
In another cemetery in Sarajevo relatives and friends gather Thursday for the funeral of Mirsada Duric who was killed in a rocket attack on a tram in the city.
The rocket-propelled grenade slammed into the tram as it was passing through the notorious "Sniper's Alley".
It was fired from a Serb-held area of the capital but no-one has yet admitted responsibility for the attack.
But the Bosnian Government has accused the Serbs, claiming they are attempting to wreck the Dayton peace accord.
The attack was the worst cease-fire violation since it came into effect in December.
Even so, the NATO-led peacekeeping force is doing what it can to keep the former warring parties apart.
British troops from the Royal Fusiliers have the task of drawing a line to separate the federation of Bosnian Muslims and Croats from the Bosnian Serbs in the town of Bocac.
Captain Iain Harrison marked the spot where the separation line will run two kilometres from the frontline.
Once located, soldiers ram home the pole marking the position of the line.
Another line will be drawn two kilometres on the other side of the frontline to create a four kilometre-wide demilitarised zone.
The zone is being drawn up under the Dayton peace agreement.
Forces on both sides now have eight days to withdraw their troops behind the line, with Bosnian Muslims and Croats to the south and Bosnian Serbs to the north.

This line marks the zone of separation as agreed in Dayton and by the 19th of January all HVO troops in the area withdraw behind that line. There's a two kilometre zone then up to the actual confrontation line and no troops are allowed in that area.

STORYLINE:
The death of Slobodan Milosevic Saturday at his prison cell at the UN war crimes tribunal has triggered mixed feelings in Bosnia-Herzegovina where he was a controversial figure.
In Pale, a mainly Serb city right outside Sarajevo, one local man said it was "a disgrace".
"For his death we have to hold responsible the Hague Tribunal which did not allow him to go to Russia for medical treatment," the man added.
Only a few kilometres (miles) away, in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo different reactions could be heard from those questioned on the street.
Bosnian Serb forces besieged the city during the Bosnian 1992-95 war.
"He was one of the most evil beings in Serbian nation. I am not sorry, because he is the main culprit for all that had happened to us," said one man.
"We were hoping he would live to see the verdict. Now that he has died I am sorry that he will not finished his sentence," another man commented.
In the eastern Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica, where 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were slaughtered in 1995, victims' relatives expressed regret about Milosevic's death.
"Believe me, I am very surprised and not glad that he had died. I thought that he will live to get the just verdict", said a member of the "Mothers of Srebrenica" organisation.
Milosevic was due to complete his defence at the war crimes tribunal this summer.
But during months of presenting his case, he barely touched on the Bosnian war or the massacre in Srebrenica.
Instead, he focused on the 1999 war in Kosovo.

Forensic experts in Bosnia continue to dig up bodies of suspected victims of war crimes.
U-N investigators digging into a mass grave on Wednesday exposed the remains of a further 20 people, believed to be Bosnian Moslems killed by Serb forces in the Srebrenica area a year ago.
Another team to the west of Sarajevo has exhumed more than 28 bodies over the past three days.
But a U-N group working in a Serbian controlled area near Srebrenica was driven out before completing their excavation.
The International Criminal Tribunal on former Yugoslavia in The Hague is striving to learn the full truth of the Srebrenica carnage.
It sent this team into Serb-controlled eastern Bosnia last weekend to start exhuming suspected mass graves over the next few weeks.
Digging into this mass grave on Wednesday, they exposed the contorted remains of up to 20 people, believed to be Bosnian Moslems killed by Serb forces in the Srebrenica area a year ago.
The team leader says at least 15 to 20 sets of human remains had been uncovered so far.

"Just now, opening up the grave and looking at... we're seeing boots, we're seeing sweaters, we're seeing hands , we're seeing feet, we're seeing people. (Q: Any uniforms?) I've not seen any uniforms. No."

U-N war crimes prosecutors say at least 3-thousand unarmed Moslem men, and possibly as many as 8-thousand, were shot after capture or mown down in ambushes as they fled to Bosnian government territory.
The Cerska exhumation, on a forest embankment off a dirt road about 35 kilometres (22 miles) west of Srebrenica, is expected to last another several days.
Forensic experts are also continuing their examination of three suspected mass graves in the area of Vogosca, 12 kilometres (8 miles) west of Sarajevo.
The examination started on Monday and 13 bodies had been found by Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, 15 more bodies were exhumed in the nearby village of Svrake.
The mass graves are located in Muslim cemeteries where the bodies were allegedly dumped by Bosnian Serb soldiers after they were either shot or clubbed to death.
Many villagers came to watch the exhumations.
They fear the bodies may be those of their missing loved ones.
In eastern Bosnia, Finnish forensic experts have been forced to abort their excavation of a mass grave because Bosnian Serbs blocked their work.
The U-N condemned the attitude of the Bosnian Serbs.

The U-N says Bosnian Serbs failed to keep promises to provide security in the Serb-held territory.
The Finnish team arrived in Bosnia last week and started excavating bodies from a mass grave at Kravice.

Former combatant swaps rifle for camera to track down birds, not men.

Cvjetko Udovicic and his friend Irnes Mujic are up early in the morning moving silently through the Bosnian countryside, almost invisible in their camouflage gear.
Soldiers on opposing sides during the Bosnian war of the 1990s, the two men are fanatical birdwatchers and photographers.
Mujic served in the Bosnian government army, and so initially did Udovicic although he is of Serb ethnicity.
After two years in the government army, Udovicic crossed the lines and enlisted in the Bosnian Serb army in 1994..
"As someone who was in both armies, I may be in a position to talk about what really happened during those years," he says. "It seems to me that there is little truth in what politicians on both sides say when they talk about wartime events."
It was life on the front line that sparked Udovicic's love of birds.
"Why do I actually photograph birds? I remember that during those crazy war years, there were many birds on the front lines, singing near the trenches," he says. "They were free to fly across the lines. There were no borders for them then, just as there are no borders for them today."
Udovicic sees himself as "a true pacifist", saying, "I don't like war. However, a man simply gets used to it over time, maybe unconsciously, and becomes a part of that killing machine. I never personally shot at or killed people and I am glad that I came out of the war without a stain on my conscience."

International war crimes investigators will begin Wednesday the grim task of excavating alleged mass graves near Srebrenica.
The investigators have arrived at a U-S base camp at Vlasenica in north-eastern Bosnia from where they'll examine seven nearby sites.
U-S peacekeepers say they will provide security for the investigators and general safety in the area, with the option of air support if it's needed.
The team of six investigators from the International War Crimes Tribunal who left Tuzla early Tuesday have arrived at their base camp at Vlasenica near Srebrenica.
The camp is about 60 kms northeast of Sarajevo.
Sources from the International War Crimes Tribunal said the team would be checking seven suspected grave sites in the Srebrenica region and checking the area for mines.
U-S troops with the NATO-led Bosnian peace force have promised to protect and aid the investigating team.
The fear is that Serbs now living in the city will rally against an investigation that may help uncover the bodies of up to 3-thousand people listed as missing since last summer.

The offer of protection from the I-FOR soldiers seems to have committed the U.S. troops - and NATO - more than ever to the search for mass graves and to punishing those responsible for them.

Vlasenica is in the heart of Bosnian Serb-controlled territory.
It's in this area that about 7-thousand Muslims allegedly disappeared after the town fell to the Serbs last July.

in the borders of present-day Bosnia&Herzegovina;, 2. the formation of the Moslem Armed
Forces, 3. full control and responsibility for the sovereignty of the domicile state of the
Moslems and other nations in Bosnia, 4. the creation of a democratic and progressive Moslem
state on the basis of co-existence with other nations, 5. the creation of cultural and civilisational
foundations for the future of the Moslem state, 6. the creation of conditions for the national
treasures of B&H; to remain with its people, 7. the creation of an educational system and bodies
of administration according to the majority principle. Brother Moslems, we can hold different
views regarding all
other issues except the question of our state. If we agree on this question then Serbia and
the Federation's perpetual claims to our state of Bosnia&Herzegovina; will cease.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SERBS IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF
BOSNIA&HERZEGOVINA;
The day is nearing when the announced Islamic Republic of Bosnia&Herzegovina; will be
proclaimed. The date which every Moslem in Bosnia&Herzegovina; and Sandzak is ardently
waiting for has been known for a long time to be the 31st December. There are some indications
that Serbs in Bosnia&Herzegovina might oppose this historic event. In this connection, certain
measures have been taken which will be applied if the Serb population of Bosnia&Herzegovina;
does not agree to this idea.
1. Every individual Serb must be aware of the responsibility of the entire nation for his uncontrolled
actions; the penalty for crimes committed will be collective - for one demolished
Moslem house, ten Serb houses will be demolished - for one dead Moslem, one
hundred Serbs will be liquidated - for one wounded Moslem (depending on the severity
of the wound) 10-15 Serbs.
2. All Serbs will have a 12-hour working day. Their wages will be proportionate to the
loyalty of all the employees and as a role they will be paid 30% less than the wages of
Moslems who occupy the same post.
3. Serbs will have priority in the dismissal of redundant workers.
4. Serbs cannot enter public institutions without special passes.
5. Serbs will receive rations for food which they will obtain in special shops.
6. Serbs do not have national parties and if they do not abide by the rules of political life,
they will not be entitled to political Organization or to vote.
7. In the Islamic Republic, the right of Serbs to produce alcohol will not be withdrawn, but
Moslems are entitled to apply the Sheriat to all inhabitants of the state.
8. Serbs are equal to Moslems if, of their own will, they are received into the Islamic faith
of their forefathers. No one bas the right to refer to their previous life because they are
not guilty for being Serbs. No generation is accountable for the actions of the previous
one, or some other that preceded it.
9. A good Serb is a living and obedient Serb; or a dead, disobedient Serb.

William Shakespeare (/ˈʃeɪkspɪər/;26 April 1564 (baptised) – 23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, which has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, and religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.

Sarajevo (Bosnia/Croatian/Serbian cyrillic Сарајево) (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [sǎrajeʋo]) is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an estimated population of 369,534. The Sarajevo metropolitan area, including Sarajevo, East Sarajevo and surrounding municipalities, is home to 688,354 inhabitants. It was, until late in the 20th century, the only major European city to have a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and synagogue within the same neighborhood. A regional center in education, the city is also home to the Balkans' first institution of tertiary education in the form of an Islamic polytechnic called the Saraybosna Osmanlı Medrese, today part of the University of Sarajevo.

Now a filmmaker in Paris, Tadic provides an intimate, almost surreal documentation of the lives of about a dozen Sarajevans who lived under siege warfare for 23 months before a shaky truce bega two weeks ago, enforced by a NATO threat of bombings. The filmmaker constantly finds warmth, humour, bravery – the sheer humanity of the people in the face of the constant soundtrack of explosions and small arms fire. But it is difficult to avoid the conclusions of psychiatrist Liliana Orouch. “When all strength fades, suicide tendencies manifest themselves in various ways,” she says. “You often hear the phrase, ‘I no longer have any desire to live,’ ‘It’s all the same if I’m hit by a bullet,’ ‘I pray to God that I am killed’ …People do it out of despair. The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992. In Croatia, the war is primarily referred to as the Homeland War (Domovinski rat) and also as the Greater-Serbian aggression (Velikosrpska agresija).[25][26] In Serbian sources, War in Croatia (Rat u Hrvatskoj) is the most commonly used public term.[27] A majority of Croats wanted Croatia to leave Yugoslavia and become a sovereign country, while many ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, supported by Serbia,[28][29] opposed the secession and wanted Croatia to remain a part of Yugoslavia. Most Serbs effectively sought a new Serb state within a Yugoslav federation, including areas of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina with ethnic Serb majorities or significant minorities,[30][31] and attempted to conquer as much of Croatia as possible.[32][33][34] In 2007, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) returned a guilty verdict against Milan Martić, one of the Serb leaders in Croatia, for having colluded with Slobodan Milošević and others to create a "unified Serbian state".[35] Between 2008 and 2012, the ICTY had prosecuted Croatian generals Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markač and Ivan Čermak for alleged involvement in the crimes related to Operation Storm. Čermak was acquitted outright, and the convictions of Gotovina and Markač were later overturned by an ICTY Appeals Panel.[36][37] The International Court of Justice dismissed Croatia and Serbia genocide claims in 2015. While it reaffirmed that serious crimes against civilians were committed by both sides and that these acts constitute some basic elements of genocide, it ruled that the genocidal intent was not present.[38] The JNA tried to keep Croatia within Yugoslavia by occupying all of Croatia.[39][40] After they failed to do this, Serbian forces established the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) within Croatia. After the ceasefire of January 1992 and international recognition of the Republic of Croatia as a sovereign state,[41][42] the front lines were entrenched, the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) was deployed,[43] and combat became largely intermittent in the following three years. During that time, the RSK encompassed 13,913 square kilometers (5,372 sq mi), more than a quarter of Croatia.[44] In 1995, Croatia launched two major offensives known as Operation Flash and Operation Storm,[12][45] which would effectively end the war in its favor. The remaining United Nations Transitional Authority for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) zone was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia by 1998.[13][17] The war ended with Croatian victory, as it achieved the goals it had declared at the beginning of the war: independence and preservation of its borders.[12][13] 21–25% of Croatia's economy was ruined, with an estimated US$37 billion in damaged infrastructure, lost output, and refugee-related costs.[46] A total of 20,000 people were killed in the war,[47] and refugees were displaced on both sides. English/Nat Many Bosnian Serbs are taking drastic measures as they flee Sarajevo suburbs ahead of a handover to Bosnian government control. Some have set fire to their houses or dug up remains of loved ones rather than leave them to the Muslim-led government. In another part of the city, a funeral was held for the 55-year-old woman killed in a rocket attack on a tram in Sarajevo. But British troops are doing their bit to keep the Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats apart with the setting up of a demilitarised zone. Under the Dayton accord, signed last month in Paris, four main Serb-held districts of Sarajevo are to come under the Muslim-led government's control. But many of the Serbs say they prefer to leave Sarajevo than stay when the capital is reunited. They fear ill-treatment or revenge by the government. As well as destroying their property, Serbs have begun digging up the cemeteries to take their dead relatives with them as they move out of the city. In another cemetery in Sarajevo relatives and friends gather Thursday for the funeral of Mirsada Duric who was killed in a rocket attack on a tram in the city. The rocket-propelled grenade slammed into the tram as it was passing through the notorious "Sniper's Alley". It was fired from a Serb-held area of the capital but no-one has yet admitted responsibility for the attack. But the Bosnian Government has accused the Serbs, claiming they are attempting to wreck the Dayton peace accord. The attack was the worst cease-fire violation since it came into effect in December. Even so, the NATO-led peacekeeping force is doing what it can to keep the former warring parties apart. British troops from the Royal Fusiliers have the task of drawing a line to separate the federation of Bosnian Muslims and Croats from the Bosnian Serbs in the town of Bocac. Captain Iain Harrison marked the spot where the separation line will run two kilometres from the frontline. Once located, soldiers ram home the pole marking the position of the line. Another line will be drawn two kilometres on the other side of the frontline to create a four kilometre-wide demilitarised zone. The zone is being drawn up under the Dayton peace agreement. Forces on both sides now have eight days to withdraw their troops behind the line, with Bosnian Muslims and Croats to the south and Bosnian Serbs to the north. SOUNDBITE: This line marks the zone of separation as agreed in Dayton and by the 19th of January all HVO troops in the area withdraw behind that line. There's a two kilometre zone then up to the actual confrontation line and no troops are allowed in that area. U-N investigators digging into a mass grave on Wednesday exposed the remains of a further 20 people, believed to be Bosnian Moslems killed by Serb forces in the Srebrenica area a year ago. Another team to the west of Sarajevo has exhumed more than 28 bodies over the past three days. But a U-N group working in a Serbian controlled area near Srebrenica was driven out before completing their excavation. The International Criminal Tribunal on former Yugoslavia in The Hague is striving to learn the full truth of the Srebrenica carnage. It sent this team into Serb-controlled eastern Bosnia last weekend to start exhuming suspected mass graves over the next few weeks. Digging into this mass grave on Wednesday, they exposed the contorted remains of up to 20 people, believed to be Bosnian Moslems killed by Serb forces in the Srebrenica area a year ago. The team leader says at least 15 to 20 sets of human remains had been uncovered so far. SOUNDBITE: "Just now, opening up the grave and looking at... we're seeing boots, we're seeing sweaters, we're seeing hands , we're seeing feet, we're seeing people. (Q: Any uniforms?) Forensic experts are also continuing their examination of three suspected mass graves in the area of Vogosca, 12 kilometres (8 miles) west of Sarajevo. The examination started on Monday and 13 bodies had been found by Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, 15 more bodies were exhumed in the nearby village of Svrake. The mass graves are located in Muslim cemeteries where the bodies were allegedly dumped by Bosnian Serb soldiers after they were either shot or clubbed to death. Many villagers came to watch the exhumations. They fear the bodies may be those of their missing loved ones. In eastern Bosnia, Finnish forensic experts have been forced to abort their excavation of a mass grave because Bosnian Serbs blocked their work. The U-N condemned the attitude of the Bosnian Serbs. Former combatant swaps rifle for camera to track down birds, not men. Film by IWPR. Cvjetko Udovicic and his friend Irnes Mujic are up early in the morning moving silently through the Bosnian countryside, almost invisible in their camouflage gear. Soldiers on opposing sides during the Bosnian war of the 1990s, the two men are fanatical birdwatchers and photographers. Mujic served in the Bosnian government army, and so initially did Udovicic although he is of Serb ethnicity. After two years in the government army, Udovicic crossed the lines and enlisted in the Bosnian Serb army in 1994.. "As someone who was in both armies, I may be in a position to talk about what really happened during those years," he says. "It seems to me that there is little truth in what politicians on both sides say when they talk about wartime events." It was life on the front line that sparked Udovicic's love of birds. "Why do I actually photograph birds? I remember that during those crazy war years, there were many birds on the front lines, singing near the trenches," he says. "They were free to fly across the lines. There were no borders for them then, just as there are no borders for them today." Udovicic sees himself as "a true pacifist", saying, "I don't like war. However, a man simply gets used to it over time, maybe unconsciously, and becomes a part of that killing machine. I never personally shot at or killed people and I am glad that I came out of the war without a stain on my conscience." This film was produced as part of the Ordinary Heroes project, funded by the Norwegian Embassy in Sarajevo. The team of six investigators from the International War Crimes Tribunal who left Tuzla early Tuesday have arrived at their base camp at Vlasenica near Srebrenica. Sources from the International War Crimes Tribunal said the team would be checking seven suspected grave sites in the Srebrenica region and checking the area for mines. Serbs will have priority in the dismissal of redundant workers. 4. Serbs cannot enter public institutions without special passes. 5. Serbs will receive rations for food which they will obtain in special shops. 6. Serbs do not have national parties and if they do not abide by the rules of political life, they will not be entitled to political Organization or to vote. 7. In the Islamic Republic, the right of Serbs to produce alcohol will not be withdrawn, but Moslems are entitled to apply the Sheriat to all inhabitants of the state. 8. Serbs are equal to Moslems if, of their own will, they are received into the Islamic faith of their forefathers. No one bas the right to refer to their previous life because they are not guilty for being Serbs. No generation is accountable for the actions of the previous one, or some other that preceded it. 9. Thousands in Sarajevo protest Syria violence
(14 Dec 2016) Up to a thousand people gathered on Wednesday in Sarajevo - the Bosnian city that survived a brutal 44-month siege during the Balkan wars of the 1990s - to rally against the war in Syria. Representatives of Bosnia's Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox Christian and Jewish communities said they felt a moral responsibility to voice outrage at the international failure to stop crimes against civilians in Aleppo and elsewhere in Syria. Participants recalled their own suffering and the sense of having been abandoned by the rest of the world during the 1992-95 inter-ethnic war that left 100,000 people dead and another two million homeless. Now a filmmaker in Paris, Tadic provides an intimate, almost surreal documentation of the lives of about a dozen Sarajevans who lived under siege warfare for 23 months before a shaky truce bega two weeks ago, enforced by a NATO threat of bombings.
The filmmaker constantly finds warmth, humour, bravery – the sheer humanity of the people in the face of the constant soundtrack of explosions and small arms fire. But it is difficult to avoid the conclusions of psychiatrist Liliana Orouch. “When all strength fades, suicide tendencies manifest themselves in various ways,” she says. “You often hear the phrase, ‘I no longer have any desire to live,’ ‘It’s all the same if I’m hit by a bullet,’ ‘I pray to God that I am killed’ …People do it out of despair. They say to themselves, ‘I’m leaving.’ “

The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992. In Croatia, the war is primarily referred to as the Homeland War (Domovinski rat) and also as the Greater-Serbian aggression (Velikosrpska agresija).[25][26] In Serbian sources, War in Croatia (Rat u Hrvatskoj) is the most commonly used public term.[27]
A majority of Croats wanted Croatia to leave Yugoslavia and become a sovereign country, while many ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, supported by Serbia,[28][29] opposed the secession and wanted Croatia to remain a part of Yugoslavia. Most Serbs effectively sought a new Serb state within a Yugoslav federation, including areas of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina with ethnic Serb majorities or significant minorities,[30][31] and attempted to conquer as much of Croatia as possible.[32][33][34] In 2007, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) returned a guilty verdict against Milan Martić, one of the Serb leaders in Croatia, for having colluded with Slobodan Milošević and others to create a "unified Serbian state".[35] Between 2008 and 2012, the ICTY had prosecuted Croatian generals Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markač and Ivan Čermak for alleged involvement in the crimes related to Operation Storm. Čermak was acquitted outright, and the convictions of Gotovina and Markač were later overturned by an ICTY Appeals Panel.[36][37] The International Court of Justice dismissed Croatia and Serbia genocide claims in 2015. While it reaffirmed that serious crimes against civilians were committed by both sides and that these acts constitute some basic elements of genocide, it ruled that the genocidal intent was not present.[38]
The JNA tried to keep Croatia within Yugoslavia by occupying all of Croatia.[39][40] After they failed to do this, Serbian forces established the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) within Croatia. After the ceasefire of January 1992 and international recognition of the Republic of Croatia as a sovereign state,[41][42] the front lines were entrenched, the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) was deployed,[43] and combat became largely intermittent in the following three years. During that time, the RSK encompassed 13,913 square kilometers (5,372 sq mi), more than a quarter of Croatia.[44] In 1995, Croatia launched two major offensives known as Operation Flash and Operation Storm,[12][45] which would effectively end the war in its favor. The remaining United Nations Transitional Authority for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) zone was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia by 1998.[13][17]
The war ended with Croatian victory, as it achieved the goals it had declared at the beginning of the war: independence and preservation of its borders.[12][13] 21–25% of Croatia's economy was ruined, with an estimated US$37 billion in damaged infrastructure, lost output, and refugee-related costs.[46] A total of 20,000 people were killed in the war,[47] and refugees were displaced on both sides. families who can now retrieve the bodies of family members killed in the war. Police and court officials from Zenica Thursday (18/1) recovered the first bodies from the area as weeping relatives looked on.
In another development, Bosnian soldiers have been pulling back from their frontline positions near Brcko in preparation for Friday's deadline for withdrawal under the Dayton peace agreement.

Some have set fire to their houses or dug up remains of loved ones rather than leave them to the Muslim-led government.
In another part of the city, a funeral was held for the 55-year-old woman killed in a rocket attack on a tram in Sarajevo.
But British troops are doing their bit to keep the Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats apart with the setting up of a demilitarised zone.
Under the Dayton accord, signed last month in Paris, four main Serb-held districts of Sarajevo are to come under the Muslim-led government's control.
But many of the Serbs say they prefer to leave Sarajevo than stay when
the capital is reunited.
They fear ill-treatment or revenge by the government.
As well as destroying their property, Serbs have begun digging up the cemeteries to take their dead relatives with them as they move out of the city.
In another cemetery in Sarajevo relatives and friends gather Thursday for the funeral of Mirsada Duric who was killed in a rocket attack on a tram in the city.
The rocket-propelled grenade slammed into the tram as it was passing through the notorious "Sniper's Alley".
It was fired from a Serb-held area of the capital but no-one has yet admitted responsibility for the attack.
But the Bosnian Government has accused the Serbs, claiming they are attempting to wreck the Dayton peace accord.
The attack was the worst cease-fire violation since it came into effect in December.
Even so, the NATO-led peacekeeping force is doing what it can to keep the former warring parties apart.
British troops from the Royal Fusiliers have the task of drawing a line to separate the federation of Bosnian Muslims and Croats from the Bosnian Serbs in the town of Bocac.
Captain Iain Harrison marked the spot where the separation line will run two kilometres from the frontline.
Once located, soldiers ram home the pole marking the position of the line.
Another line will be drawn two kilometres on the other side of the frontline to create a four kilometre-wide demilitarised zone.
The zone is being drawn up under the Dayton peace agreement.
Forces on both sides now have eight days to withdraw their troops behind the line, with Bosnian Muslims and Croats to the south and Bosnian Serbs to the north.

The death of Slobodan Milosevic Saturday at his prison cell at the UN war crimes tribunal has triggered mixed feelings in Bosnia-Herzegovina where he was a controversial figure.
In Pale, a mainly Serb city right outside Sarajevo, one local man said it was "a disgrace".
"For his death we have to hold responsible the Hague Tribunal which did not allow him to go to Russia for medical treatment," the man added.
Only a few kilometres (miles) away, in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo different reactions could be heard from those questioned on the street.
Bosnian Serb forces besieged the city during the Bosnian 1992-95 war.
"He was one of the most evil beings in Serbian nation. I am not sorry, because he is the main culprit for all that had happened to us," said one man.
"We were hoping he would live to see the verdict. Now that he has died I am sorry that he will not finished his sentence," another man commented.
In the eastern Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica, where 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were slaughtered in 1995, victims' relatives expressed regret about Milosevic's death.
"Believe me, I am very surprised and not glad that he had died. I thought that he will live to get the just verdict", said a member of the "Mothers of Srebrenica" organisation.
Milosevic was due to complete his defence at the war crimes tribunal this summer.
But during months of presenting his case, he barely touched on the Bosnian war or the massacre in Srebrenica.
Instead, he focused on the 1999 war in Kosovo.

Forensic experts in Bosnia continue to dig up bodies of suspected victims of war crimes.
U-N investigators digging into a mass grave on Wednesday exposed the remains of a further 20 people, believed to be Bosnian Moslems killed by Serb forces in the Srebrenica area a year ago.
Another team to the west of Sarajevo has exhumed more than 28 bodies over the past three days.
But a U-N group working in a Serbian controlled area near Srebrenica was driven out before completing their excavation.
The International Criminal Tribunal on former Yugoslavia in The Hague is striving to learn the full truth of the Srebrenica carnage.
It sent this team into Serb-controlled eastern Bosnia last weekend to start exhuming suspected mass graves over the next few weeks.
Digging into this mass grave on Wednesday, they exposed the contorted remains of up to 20 people, believed to be Bosnian Moslems killed by Serb forces in the Srebrenica area a year ago.
The team leader says at least 15 to 20 sets of human remains had been uncovered so far.

"Just now, opening up the grave and looking at... we're seeing boots, we're seeing sweaters, we're seeing hands , we're seeing feet, we're seeing people. (Q: Any uniforms?) I've not seen any uniforms. No."

U-N war crimes prosecutors say at least 3-thousand unarmed Moslem men, and possibly as many as 8-thousand, were shot after capture or mown down in ambushes as they fled to Bosnian government territory.
The Cerska exhumation, on a forest embankment off a dirt road about 35 kilometres (22 miles) west of Srebrenica, is expected to last another several days.
Forensic experts are also continuing their examination of three suspected mass graves in the area of Vogosca, 12 kilometres (8 miles) west of Sarajevo.
The examination started on Monday and 13 bodies had been found by Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, 15 more bodies were exhumed in the nearby village of Svrake.
The mass graves are located in Muslim cemeteries where the bodies were allegedly dumped by Bosnian Serb soldiers after they were either shot or clubbed to death.
Many villagers came to watch the exhumations.
They fear the bodies may be those of their missing loved ones.
In eastern Bosnia, Finnish forensic experts have been forced to abort their excavation of a mass grave because Bosnian Serbs blocked their work.
The U-N condemned the attitude of the Bosnian Serbs.

"Because of the obstructionist attitude of the Republic of Srpska authorities the team left the Republic of Srpska yesterday evening. All the promises, guarantees that were given, surprise, surprise, did not materialize on the ground."

The U-N says Bosnian Serbs failed to keep promises to provide security in the Serb-held territory.

Cvjetko Udovicic and his friend Irnes Mujic are up early in the morning moving silently through the Bosnian countryside, almost invisible in their camouflage gear.
Soldiers on opposing sides during the Bosnian war of the 1990s, the two men are fanatical birdwatchers and photographers.
Mujic served in the Bosnian government army, and so initially did Udovicic although he is of Serb ethnicity.
After two years in the government army, Udovicic crossed the lines and enlisted in the Bosnian Serb army in 1994..
"As someone who was in both armies, I may be in a position to talk about what really happened during those years," he says. "It seems to me that there is little truth in what politicians on both sides say when they talk about wartime events."
It was life on the front line that sparked Udovicic's love of birds.
"Why do I actually photograph birds? I remember that during those crazy war years, there were many birds on the front lines, singing near the trenches," he says. "They were free to fly across the lines. There were no borders for them then, just as there are no borders for them today."
Udovicic sees himself as "a true pacifist", saying, "I don't like war. However, a man simply gets used to it over time, maybe unconsciously, and becomes a part of that killing machine. I never personally shot at or killed people and I am glad that I came out of the war without a stain on my conscience."
This film was produced as part of the Ordinary Heroes project, funded by the Norwegian Embassy in Sarajevo. IWPR is implementing the project in partnership with the Post-Conflict Research Centre in Sarajevo.

U-S peacekeepers say they will provide security for the investigators and general safety in the area, with the option of air support if it's needed.
The team of six investigators from the International War Crimes Tribunal who left Tuzla early Tuesday have arrived at their base camp at Vlasenica near Srebrenica.
The camp is about 60 kms northeast of Sarajevo.
Sources from the International War Crimes Tribunal said the team would be checking seven suspected grave sites in the Srebrenica region and checking the area for mines.
U-S troops with the NATO-led Bosnian peace force have promised to protect and aid the investigating team.
The fear is that Serbs now living in the city will rally against an investigation that may help uncover the bodies of up to 3-thousand people listed as missing since last summer.

Moslems in Yugoslavia today, the question arises as to whether other Yugoslav nations ofer the
possibility of Moslems to survive? All present-day politicians claim that according to the
constitution, nations have the legitimate right to self-determination and a state of their own.
Therefore the Moslem National Council is working for: 1. the creation of a Moslem state with
in the borders of present-day Bosnia&Herzegovina;, 2. the formation of the Moslem Armed
Forces, 3. full control and responsibility for the sovereignty of the domicile state of the
Moslems and other nations in Bosnia, 4. the creation of a democratic and progressive Moslem
state on the basis of co-existence with other nations, 5. the creation of cultural and civilisational
foundations for the future of the Moslem state, 6. the creation of conditions for the national
treasures of B&H; to remain with its people, 7. the creation of an educational system and bodies
of administration according to the majority principle. Brother Moslems, we can hold different
views regarding all
other issues except the question of our state. If we agree on this question then Serbia and
the Federation's perpetual claims to our state of Bosnia&Herzegovina; will cease.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO SERBS IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF
BOSNIA&HERZEGOVINA;
The day is nearing when the announced Islamic Republic of Bosnia&Herzegovina; will be
proclaimed. The date which every Moslem in Bosnia&Herzegovina; and Sandzak is ardently
waiting for has been known for a long time to be the 31st December. There are some indications
that Serbs in Bosnia&Herzegovina might oppose this historic event. In this connection, certain
measures have been taken which will be applied if the Serb population of Bosnia&Herzegovina;
does not agree to this idea.
1. Every individual Serb must be aware of the responsibility of the entire nation for his uncontrolled
actions; the penalty for crimes committed will be collective - for one demolished
Moslem house, ten Serb houses will be demolished - for one dead Moslem, one
hundred Serbs will be liquidated - for one wounded Moslem (depending on the severity
of the wound) 10-15 Serbs.
2. All Serbs will have a 12-hour working day. Their wages will be proportionate to the
loyalty of all the employees and as a role they will be paid 30% less than the wages of
Moslems who occupy the same post.
3. Serbs will have priority in the dismissal of redundant workers.
4. Serbs cannot enter public institutions without special passes.
5. Serbs will receive rations for food which they will obtain in special shops.
6. Serbs do not have national parties and if they do not abide by the rules of political life,
they will not be entitled to political Organization or to vote.
7. In the Islamic Republic, the right of Serbs to produce alcohol will not be withdrawn, but
Moslems are entitled to apply the Sheriat to all inhabitants of the state.
8. Serbs are equal to Moslems if, of their own will, they are received into the Islamic faith
of their forefathers. No one bas the right to refer to their previous life because they are
not guilty for being Serbs. No generation is accountable for the actions of the previous
one, or some other that preceded it.
9. A good Serb is a living and obedient Serb; or a dead, disobedient Serb.

Participants recalled their own suffering and the sense of having been abandoned by the rest of the world during the 1992-95 inter-ethnic war that left 100,000 people dead and another two million homeless.

Oklahoma officials said that after trying for several months to obtain the lethal injection drugs necessary to carry out scheduled executions, the state plans now turns to nitrogen gas once the state resumes using the death penalty, making it the first U.S. state that would use the gas to carry out capital punishment, according to The Associated Press ...
