EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

Islamic State (IS) fighters swept into the Iraqi city of Sinjar in August 2014, forcing Kurdish peshmerga forces to retreat. The city, primarily made up of Yazidis, a religious minority with roots going back thousands of years in the region, was soon overran with IS militants. They then set about terrorizing the Yazidis, who they see as apostates and devil worshippers who need to be cleansed.
Tens of thousands of people fled, with many ending up on in dire straits on nearby Mount Sinjar, creating an urgent humanitarian situation that led to US President Barack Obama ordering American jets to bomb IS for the first time. Thousands of Yazidis were killed by IS, with women being raped and enslaved to be sold as property. Mass graves are still being discovered.
Kurdish militias have battled for Sinjar since then without much progress. And up until now the city has remained under IS control.
Over the course of two days in mid-November, VICE News embedded with peshmerga forces as they retook the city in a massive push involving 7,500 troops, with the hopes of cutting off the resupply routes between IS territory in Syria and Iraq. Snaking through the desert in large convoys with heavy artillery and tanks, and backed by international coalition air strikes, they faced little resistance besides snipers, mortars, and IEDs as IS fled and the city was taken back.

ABU KAMAL, SYRIA — In an effort to reduce the Islamic State's income from the sale of fuel, the U.S. led coalition has targeted IS's oil infrastructure. In a statement released Monday, the United States led Combined Joint Task force said it conducted strikes against Islamic State controlled oil facilities in eastern Syria and Iraq on Sunday.
In one strike, four U.S. A-10 Warthog jets, and two AC-130 gunships took off from a base in Turkey and targeted fuel trucks near Abu Kamal city, in Syria's eastern Dayr Az Zawr region. The Pentagon says the region provides the Islamic State with two thirds of its oil revenue.
Out of a fleet of 295 fuel trucks in the Abu Kamal area, the strike blew up 116. According to officials cited by the New York Times, the strikes were planned before Friday's attacks on Paris, for which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility. In total, 23 strikes were carried out by the U.S.-led coalition, with nine other strikes near six other Syrian cities against fighting positions, buildings and tactical units. In Iraq, 13 strikes were carried out against five tactical units, two buildings, and weapon caches.

RAQQA, SYRIA —British Islamic State leader Mohammed Emwazi, also called Jihadi John, might have been killed in a U.S. airstrike in northern Syria on Thursday evening, Reuters reported.
According to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a car carrying four foreign Islamic State leaders, including one British Jihadi, had just left the Islamic Court in Raqqa, when a U.S. airstrike conducted by a drone hit it. Local sources said the four bodies were left burnt to pieces.
A total of 14 U.S. airstrikes were conducted in the area that night.
The Pentagon is evaluating the effectiveness of the strike and hasn’t confirmed yet that the British Jihadi is in fact Jihadi John.
According to the Telegraph, US officials are 99 percent sure he is dead.
Among the hostages Jihadi John murdered are U.S. journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley, U.S. aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning and Japanese journalist Kenji Goto.

A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq.
The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.

French president calls Paris attacks ‘act of war’ by Islamic State
French President François Hollande decried the massacres across Paris for an “act of war” from the Islamic State, amplifying signals Saturday of any major response from France as well as its allies after coordinated gunfire and bombings that killed a minimum of 127 people.
Moments later, an email attributed for the Islamic State asserted responsibility for your worst attacks in France since

“France and those who follow her voice must know that they remain the main target of Islamic State and that they will continue to smell the odour of death for having led the crusade, for having dared to insult our prophet, for having boasted of fighting Islam in France and striking Muslims in the caliphate with their planes,” the group said in a statement.
Hollande described the attacks as “cowardly” and “an act of war” that had been carefully “prepared, organised and planned from outside the country by Islamic State, but with help from inside. “Faced with war, the country must take appropriate action,” the president said. He did not say what form that action might take.
These were attacks “against France, against the values that we defend everywhere in the world, against what we are: a free country that means something to the whole planet,” Hollande said, calling for unity and courage and saying he would address an extraordinary meeting of parliament on Monday.

The six deadly, simultaneous attacks that devastated Paris are the latest in a string of terrorism tragedies in France this year.
The attacks killed at least 120 people across the city, including dozens of victims slain at an Eagles of Death Metal concert at the Bataclan theatre.
For the latest information on the Paris terror attacks, view our updates here.
France has been heavily targeted by terrorists since the start of the year, with previous attacks killing a total of 18 people.
On January 7, two gunmen killed 12 people in an attack on the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The victims included eight magazine employees and two police officers.

The gunmen, brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi, escaped the scene and sparked a massive manhunt.
On January 8, another gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, fatally shot a police officer and wounded a street sweeper in Montrouge, before he also escaped. It later emerged he had also shot a jogger on January 7.
Police fatally shot the Kouachi brothers on January 9, after a nine-hour siege focused on their hideout in a printing company’s building in Dammartin-en-Goële, north-east of Paris.
On the same day, Coulibaly stormed a kosher supermarket in east Paris, shooting dead four people and taking hostages. He had a female accomplice, and the pair were eventually shot dead by police.

On June 26, a van driver decapitated his former boss at a factory near Lyon. The driver also crashed his vehicle to spark an explosion.
On August 21, a gunman opened fire on a high-speed train that was passing through northern France.

ISIL has reportedly claimed responsibility for today’s Paris terror attacks, but France’s resolve to fight the terror group in Syria and Iraq remains unchanged.
French fighter jets were among the first to join the US in bombing raids on ISIL targets.
The Paris terror attacks also happened hours after a strike on ISIL in Syria “almost certainly” killed the well-known militant ‘Jihadi John’, according to US military authorities.
Terrorism expert Professor Joseph Siracusa, from RMIT University, said France’s tough stance made it a target.
“This is the premium you pay for being involved in these kinds of places,” he said.
“It’s just a matter of when, not if, these attacks are going to take place.”
However, he said the attack was a “wake-up call” for other countries involved.
“Why France, why Paris? Well, it could’ve been London, it could’ve been anywhere – it could’ve been New York, it could’ve been Sydney,” he said.
ISIL has released propaganda videos specifically targeting France throughout this year, and about 300 French nationals are believed to be fighting for terror groups in Iraq and Syria.
Security consultant Neil Fergus, CEO of Intelligent Risks Group, said some of the perpetrators likely had French citizenship.
“I think there’s a very good probability that we’ll find that a couple of the perpetrators of these horrific attacks are French citizens who have been and got military training and military experience in the northern Iraq-Syrian theatre,” he said.

The Islamic State is one of the most lethal and successful jihadist groups in modern history, surpassing even al-Qaeda. Thousands of its followers have marched across Syria and Iraq, subjugating millions, enslaving women, beheading captives, and daring anyone to stop them. Thousands more have spread terror beyond the Middle East under the Islamic State's black flag. How did the Islamic State attract so many followers and conquer so much land? By being more ruthless, more apocalyptic, and more devoted to state-building than its competitors. The shrewd leaders of the Islamic State combined two of the most powerful yet contradictory ideas in Islam-the return of the Islamic Empire and the end of the world-into a mission and a message that shapes its strategy and inspires its army of zealous fighters. They have defied conventional thinking about how to wage wars and win recruits. Even if the Islamic State is defeated, jihadist terrorism will never be the same. Based almost entirely on primary sources in Arabic-including ancient religious texts and secret al-Qaeda and Islamic State letters that few have seen - William McCants' The ISIS Apocalypse explores how religious fervor, strategic calculation, and doomsday prophecy shaped the Islamic State's past and foreshadow its dark future.

Islamic State claims responsibility for attacks in Paris
We start with the latest on the terror attacks in Paris.
French President Francois Hollande has announced that at least one-hundred-27 people were killed in the multiple shootings and bomb attacks across the French capital on Friday evening, local time.
More than one-hundred-80 people were wounded.
Around 90 are said to be in critical condition.
For the latest we connect to our Connie Kim.
Connie,... what do we know so far?
Well Mark,... the Islamic State militant group has confirmed what many suspected;... that it was behind the attacks.
It says they were in response to French air strikes on IS-held territory in Syria.
In an undated video released on Saturday,... Islamic State called on Muslims to terrorise the people of France.
"If you are sincere to Allah in your worship and in your creed and are unable to travel, then operate within France. Terrorise them and do not allow them to sleep due to fear and horror.
Shortly before that video emerged, French President Francois Hollande said the Islamic State′s actions were an "act of war."
"Fellow citizens, what happened yesterday in Paris was an act of war. It′s an act of war which was prepared, organised, and planned from outside, with help from the inside which the inquiry will help shed light on."
The terrorists struck six different locations across northern Paris as people were enjoying their Friday evening.
The worst carnage happened at Bataclan concert hall, where at least eighty people were killed.
A rock concert was being held in the hall at the time.
A journalist who escaped with his life told CNN that the hall was a ′blood bath.′
Four attackers were killed when police raided the hall, with three blowing themselves up and the other shot dead by police.
The attacks came as a friendly soccer match between France and Germany was underway at France′s national stadium.
At least four people were killed outside the stadium,... but it′s not clear whether this includes the attackers thought to have died here.
More than a dozen people eating dinner at a popular Cambodian restaurant in the city were also killed.
France is under a state of emergency with 15-hundred military personnel deployed across in Paris.
The Paris metro railway is closed.
Schools, universities and municipal buildings have also been ordered to stay shut.
Francois Hollande also declared three days of national mourning on Saturday.
And Connie,... the world has been sending messages of support to France. The condemnation of the terrorists′ actions has also been universal. What messages have international leaders been conveying?
Yes, Mark... there has been an outpouring of grief but also determination to fight the scourge of international terrorism. German Chancellor

″If you are sincere to Allah in your worship and in your creed and are unable to travel, then operate within France. Terrorise them and do not allow them to sleep due to fear and horror.
Shortly before that video emerged, French President Francois Hollande said the Islamic State′s actions were an ″act of war.″
″Fellow citizens, what happened yesterday in Paris was an act of war. It′s an act of war which was prepared, organised, and planned from outside, with help from the inside which the inquiry will help shed light on.″
The terrorists struck six different locations across northern Paris as people were enjoying their Friday evening.

French President François Hollande decried the massacres across Paris for an “act of war” from the Islamic State, amplifying signals Saturday of any major response from France as well as its allies after coordinated gunfire and bombings that killed a minimum of 127 people.
Moments later, an email attributed for the Islamic State asserted responsibility for your worst attacks in France since World War II and among of the most extremely deadly terrorist strikes on Western soil since Sept. 11, 2001.
One survivor described the gunmen coldly picking off hostages in the packed concert hall just as if “we were birds.”
[LIVE updates for the attacks]
The Islamic State — in statements in Arabic and French — described the attacks so long as in the planning stages, and suggested Friday was selected to coincide having a soccer match between “two crusader countries” Germany and France that Hollande attended. Several of the victims were with the stadium.
It described Paris as being the capital of the country that “carries the cross in Europe.”
A next day of declaring a nationwide state of emergency, Hollande said the attacks ended up being “organized and planned from outside” and vowed “merciless” retaliation.
Hollande’s statement also marked the clearest sign that authorities could significantly increase the U.S.-led military effort to strike the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. Earlier Friday, Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq take off a key supply line for that Islamic State.
The Paris attacks, Hollande said, were “committed by the terrorist army, the Islamic State group, a jihadist army, against France, against the values we defend everywhere inside world, against what were: A free country this means something on the whole planet.”
In Vienna, Secretary of State John F. Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov cut short an exclusive meeting before a conference within the crisis in Syria, where Russia began military operations in September to back the embattled government.
“We are usually in absolute and total agreement why these kinds of attacks are one of the most vile, horrendous, outrageous unacceptable acts for the planet that under any category,” Kerry said.
France, meanwhile, is under its most serious lockdown in decades. Borders controls were tightened, many public sites were shut and soldiers began positions in Paris and elsewhere.
[Hollande’s address as soon as the attacks]
“It was very quiet in the train station this morning,” said Matiau Pons, who watched police race to a single of the attack sites and after that holed up at home because horrors unfolded. “It was silence. Very heavy.”
For Toronto native Max Mandel, the somber mood Saturday rekindled memories from the Twin Towers. “”I is at New York on 9-11, thus it was a familiar feeling,” he explained.
At half dozen sites across Paris — a soccer stadium, restaurants, a concert hall — the attackers performed suicide bombings, hurled grenades and shot hostages dead in a very frenzy of violence that paralyzed metropolis.
Friday was the next time in 2010 that the City of Light has been a scene of mass murder; in January, Islamist gunmen attacked the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo as well as a kosher supermarket, leaving a complete of 17 dead.
The latest violence is only going to heighten the stress on a continent that is on edge on the accumulated strain of an historic migration crisis, growing Islamist extremism and increasingly polarized politics.
“We will lead a war which is pitiless,” Hollande said outside the Bataclan concert hall, scene of the very most bloodshed.
“Because when terrorists are equipped for committing such atrocities, they have to be certain that they're facing a determined France, a united France, a France that may be together and will not let itself be moved, even though today we express infinite sorrow.”
[Obama vows to create those responsible to justice]
The violence was quickly celebrated online by backers on the Islamic State as well as other extremist groups. The scale and sophistication on the attacks will likely be likely to prompt questions about how a planning for a very operation evaded the scrutiny of French intelligence services.

In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain.
The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves.

The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.
For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting.

Phil Campion, a former SAS soldier and a veteran of just about every major conflict zone in the world, travels to the front line in Syria and Iraq to meet the men and women taking the fight to Islamic State.
Known as 'Big Phil', he filmed for Sky with both the YPG and Kurdish Peshmerga, observing their war against a well-equipped and motivated enemy.
He experienced some of the worst battles of his life while embedded with the Kurds and met the all-female fighting units of the YPJ, described as a secret weapon of the war.
Are those fighting Islamic State properly equipped for battle? And is this a fight they can win? Find out in our special report.

Islamic State stands with al-Qaeda as one of the most dangerous jihadist groups, after its gains in Syria and Iraq.
Under its former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), it was formed in April 2013, growing out of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).
It has since been disavowed by al-Qaeda, but has become one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria and Iraq.
Its precise size is unclear but it is thought to include thousands of fighters, including many foreign jihadists.
The organisation is led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Little is known about him, but it is believed he was born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971 and joined the insurgency that erupted in Iraq soon after the 2003 US-led invasion.
In 2010 he emerged as the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Isis.
The group has seen considerable military success. In March 2013, it took over the Syrian city of Raqqa - the first provincial capital to fall under rebel control. In January 2014, it capitalised on growing tension between Iraq's Sunni minority and Shia-led government by taking control of the predominantly Sunni city of Fallujah, in the western province of Anbar.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress.
The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance.
VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power.

As the Islamic State massacred its way throughout Iraq and Syria this summer, a separate battle took place in neighboring Lebanon.
This summer, the Islamic State invaded the Lebanese border town of Arsal, beheading captured soldiers and unleashing waves of lethal car bombs, destabilizing the country.
Hezbollah, one of the world's strongest guerrilla armies, has also become involved — either defending Lebanon, or making things worse, depending on who you ask.
VICE News traveled to Lebanon to explore the battle being waged by one of the world's fiercest militant groups against one of the Middle East’s smallest and most fragile nations.

The Labour leader was jeered by Conservative MPs as he tried to make the case against military action
UK Parliament to Vote on Expanded Attacks on Islamic State
Jeremy Corbyn was repeatedly heckled and shouted down by Tory MPs as he tried to make the case against air strikes .
The Labour leader frequently had to pause his speech in the face of jeering from the opposition benches.
At one point he was trying to read out a letter from a Syrian refugee who lives in his London constituency when he was interrupted by Tory laughter.
Mr Corbyn said he could not vote for military action when it would “almost inevitably lead to the deaths of innocent” civilians.
“For all members to take a decision that will put British servicemen and women in harms way and almost inevitably lead to the deaths of innocents is a heavy responsibility.
“It must be treated with the utmost seriousness and respect given to those who make a different judgement about the right course of action to take,” he said.
The long-standing pacifist said the spectre of Britain’s previous interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya “loomed” over the debate.
“To oppose another reckless and half-baked intervention isn’t pacifism. It’s hard-headed common sense.
“To resist ISIL’s determination to draw the western powers back into the heart of the Middle East isn’t to turn our backs on allies. It’s to refuse to play into the hands of ISIL,” he said.
The “overriding goal” should a negotiated peace settlement, not adding to the Coalition’s bombing campaign, Mr Corbyn told MPs.
And he claimed that the public was moving against air strikes. In a dig at his Labour colleagues in favour of air strikes, he reminded them he had been elected as a leader on the back of his anti-war stance.
Mr Corbyn tore into David Cameron ’s claim that there 70,000 troops in the Syrian Free Army ready to take the fight to ISIL on the ground.
“The Prime Minister has failed to convince almost anyone that even if British participation in the air campaign would tip the balance, that there are credible ground forces able to take back territory now held by ISIL.
“In fact, it’s quite clear there are no such forces,” he said.
The Labour leader then warned that air strikes would result in “mission creep” with Western boots on the ground.
“That’s what the Prime Minister’s bombing campaign could well lead to.
“It’s why the logic of an extended air campaign is mission creep and western boots on the ground – whatever the Prime Minister may say now about keeping British combat troops out of the fight,” he said.
The Labour leader provoked howls of protest from MPs when he refused to say if wanted Britain to withdraw from air strikes against ISIS in Iraq
Asked by pro-war Labour MP John Woodcock if he was favour of removing air protection for Kurdish forces in Iraq, Mr Corbyn replied: “It is not part of the motion today so we move on with this debate.”

Raising its black flag over the rugged mountainous regions of Afghanistan, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has emerged as a new threat to the war-ravaged country as it battles the Taliban for supremacy.
Employing violence and brutality used by the group in Syria and Iraq, Wilayat Khorasan, (the ancient name ISIL has chosen for the region made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of neighbouring countries), has emerged in seven different areas and vowed to step up operations, where the veteran fighters, the Taliban, once held sway.
Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام
The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, /ˈ...
The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, /ˈaɪsɨs/), the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham,[28] or simply Islamic State (IS),[29] is a Wahhabi/Salafi jihadist extremist militant group, self-proclaimed to be a caliphate and Islamic state. It is led by and mainly composed of Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. As of March 2015, it has control over territory occupied by 10 million people in Iraq and Syria, and through loyal local groups, has control over small areas of Libya, Nigeria and Afghanistan. The group also operates or has affiliates in other parts of the world, including North Africa and South Asia.[30][31][32][33][34][35]
The group is known in Arabic as ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī 'l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām, leading to the acronym Da'ish or Daesh (داعش, Arabic pronunciation: [ˈdaːʕiʃ]),[36][37] the Arabic equivalent of "ISIL". On 29 June 2014, the group proclaimed itself to be a worldwide caliphate, with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being named its caliph, and renamed itself ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah (الدولة الإسلامية, "Islamic State" (IS)). As a caliphate, it claims religious, political and military authority over all Muslims worldwide, and that "the legality of all emirates, groups, states, and organisations, becomes null by the expansion of the khilāfah's [caliphate's] authority and arrival of its troops to their areas".[28][38][39][40] The United Nations has held ISIL responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes, and Amnesty International has reported ethnic cleansing by the group on a "historic scale". The group has been designated a terrorist organisation by the United Nations, the European Union and member states, the United States, India, Indonesia, Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Syria and other countries. Over 60 countries are directly or indirectly waging war against ISIL.
The group originated as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, which pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004. The group participated in the Iraqi insurgency that followed the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by Western forces. In January 2006, it joined other Sunni insurgent groups to form the Mujahideen Shura Council, which proclaimed the formation of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in October 2006. After the Syrian Civil War began in March 2011, the ISI, under the leadership of al-Baghdadi, sent delegates into Syria in August 2011. These fighters named themselves Jabhat an-Nuṣrah li-Ahli ash-Shām—al-Nusra Front—and established a large presence in Sunni-majority areas of Syria, within the governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo. In April 2013, al-Baghdadi announced the merger of the ISI with al-Nusra Front and that the name of the reunited group was now the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). However, Abu Mohammad al-Julani and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leaders of al-Nusra and al-Qaeda respectively, rejected the merger. After an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIL on 3 February 2014, citing its failure to consult and "notorious intransigence". In Syria, the group has conducted ground attacks on both government forces and rebel factions in the Syrian Civil War. The group gained prominence after it drove Iraqi government forces out of key cities in western Iraq in an offensive initiated in early 2014. Iraq's territorial loss almost caused a collapse of the Iraqi government and prompted a renewal of US military action in Iraq
wn.com/The Dáesh (Islamic State Of Iraq And The Levant) (Isil Arabic الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام
