The other day on February 13, 2015, when invited to preside over a seminar, it was an occasion to introspect on matters which escape our attention in day-to-day life. The occasion was a national seminar organised by the English Department of the SD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh on "The Marginalised in Contemporary Literature". It is significant to trace how what constitutes the "marginalised" has been changing over periods in different places. It were the women at one time since they were denied equal rights, including voting rights, or the locals and the aborigines who once ruled the place, the Harijans and Dalits who were a product of the caste and class system in India, the slaves and the blacks in the West, the Jews etc. And they could differ in different places in different times - today the Pandits who were once the privileged people in the Kashmir Valley appear marginalised.
What really changes things for the marginalised? Yes, writing about them and works of art definitely puts spotlight on them. But, I told the gathering that what really changes things for them is education and their capacity to earn as well as others. This has done wonders to the Dalits of the Doaba region of Punjab, who could then go abroad in large numbers. The other day, I saw a sticker on a car in Nawanshahr, "Proud to be a Chamar"! Education and jobs gives them exposure and also instilled renewed confidence. Go to the youtube and see the songs, "Putt Chamaran De". Besides, all this gives them political power and influence. The Jews the world-over is a case in point.
This bring me to the larger and more relevant point; avoiding conflict between those in the mainstream and those who were earlier marginalised and feel empowered now. This is particularly true in the context of Punjab today. But we will talk about this on another day.
