The Longfellow Bridge (also known to locals as the "Salt-and-Pepper Bridge" or the "Salt-and-Pepper-Shaker Bridge" due to the shape of its central towers) carries the Route 3 roadway, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Red Line trains, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. The structure spans the Charles River to connect Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood with the Kendall Square area of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The bridge falls under the jurisdiction and oversight of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The bridge carries approximately 28,600 cars and 90,000 mass-transit passengers every weekday. A portion of the elevated Charles/Massachusetts General Hospital rapid transit station lies at the eastern end of the bridge, which connects to Charles Circle.
Longfellow Bridge is a combination railway and highway bridge. It is 105 feet (32 m) wide, 1,767 feet 6 inches (538.73 m) long between abutments, and nearly one-half mile in length, including abutments and approaches. It consists of eleven steel arch spans supported on ten masonry piers and two massive abutments. The arches vary in length from 101 feet 6 inches (30.94 m) at the abutments to 188 feet 6 inches (57.45 m) at the center, and in rise from 8 feet 6 inches (2.59 m) to 26 feet 6 inches (8.08 m). Headroom under the central arch is 26 feet (7.9 m) at mean high water.
Longfellow may refer to:
A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that each serve a particular purpose and apply to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it.
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the origin of the word bridge to an Old English word brycg, of the same meaning. The word can be traced directly back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰrēw-. The word for the card game of the same name has a different origin.
The first bridges made by humans were probably spans of cut wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to cross small caverns or wells to get from one place to another. A common form of lashing sticks, logs, and deciduous branches together involved the use of long reeds or other harvested fibers woven together to form a connective rope capable of binding and holding together the materials used in early bridges.
The Charles River is an 80 mi (129 km) long river that flows in an overall northeasterly direction in eastern Massachusetts. From its source in Hopkinton, the river travels through 23 cities and towns until reaching the Atlantic Ocean at Boston. It is also sometimes called the River Charles or simply the Charles.
The Charles River is fed by approximately 80 streams and several major aquifers as it flows 80 miles (129 km), starting at Teresa Road just north of Echo Lake (42°12′54″N 71°30′52″W / 42.215°N 71.514444°W / 42.215; -71.514444) in Hopkinton, passing through 23 cities and towns in eastern Massachusetts before emptying into Boston Harbor. Thirty-three lakes and ponds and 35 communities are entirely or partially part of the Charles River drainage basin. Despite the river's length and relatively large drainage area (308 square miles; 798 km²), its source is only 26 miles (42 km) from its mouth, and the river drops only 350 feet (107 m) from source to sea. The Charles River watershed contains over 8,000 acres of protected wetlands, referred to as Natural Valley Storage. These areas are important in preventing downstream flooding and providing natural habitats to native species.

I've always admired the Longfellow Bridge from a distance. This is the first time I was able to get up close and personal with a Boston landmark. The steel rib arch-type construction looks very attractive. It evokes a historical heritage from a simpler time. In my opinion, the Longfellow Bridge is much more attractive than the modern Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge. It's clear that the Longfellow Bridge was built to last - constructed in 1906, it's still going strong. Statistics reveal that 26,000 cars pass over the bridge each day. The Longfellow Bridge connects Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood to Cambridge's Kendall Square. In addition to the automobile traffic, 90,000 commuters ride the Red Line over the Longfellow Bridge on a daily basis. Longfellow Bridge is now...

Longfellow construction: 6 Dec, 2013. Not too much new going on. Some more fencing. but most notable are the ladders goign into the bridge - work has started in the piers themselves (they're hollow). Look near the bits of fencing that are gone. Plates we never really noticed have been removed and laddars go down into the piers.

This video shows the conditions of the Longfellow Bridge as of Dec. 4, 2015. The bike and travel lanes are not wide enough to facilitate safe passing of people riding bikes by large vehicles like this Trolley Bus. We recommend taking the full travel lane when crossing the Bridge to prevent unsafe passing.
Executive Director Richard Fries outlines some of the changes made to the Longfellow Bridge during the reconstruction project and the impact on how bikes travel over this bridge.

One of Boston’s historic gems, the Longfellow Bridge, is in the middle of a $255 million project to update it, replace structural elements and restore the bridge’s historical character. Sponge-Jet is playing a significant role in the cleaning of the bridge’s marquee façade. The granite pilings and “Salt-and-Pepper” towers are being cleaned with Silver 80 Sponge Media™ micro-abrasives. It’s tasked with removing graffiti, efflorescence and environmental contaminants from Rockport granite blocks. See an example from phase one of the project. Note the speed and effectiveness of this dry recyclable cleaning technology.

Driving over the Zakim Bridge in Boston, MA on Easter Sunday 2013 (March 31, 2013). Also known as the Bunker Hill Bridge by local residence of neighboring Charlestown. Construction finished in December 2002, and opened for public use in early 2003. The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge, and a product of the Big Dig, which was the largest highway construction project in the U.S. The project was set in place to replace the old Charlestown High Bridge. Massachusetts Governor A. Paul Cellucci requested to name the bridge the "Freedom Bridge", which was later changed to honor Boston civic leader and civil rights activist Leonard P. Zakim. Before the public opening, in October 2002, to demonstrate the structural integrity of the bridge, 14 elephants (weighi...
It was an uphill climb for the bike tour company Urban AdventTours in the beginning. Owner, Andrew Prescott operated out of his garage until building up enough revenue to operate out of a storefront in downtown Boston. Andrew started the company in 2004, giving narrated tours of the city with a tiny fleet of eight bikes. "After quitting my job in accounting I thought about things that I really like," says Prescott. "Some of the answers are green, travel, health." And exploring. "On weekends I rode by bike to get lost and explore the city." Since opening, Urban AdvenTours has extended its kick stand and set up a spacious shop on Atlantic Ave. From selling to renting, Prescott is always looking for ways to expand. The Bio Bus stands as proof of Prescott's innovative ideas. The big green tr...
