Poaching is the illegal taking of wild plants or animals; the law concerned may be e.g. the law of property or local or international conservation and wildlife management laws. Violations of hunting laws and regulations are normally punishable by law and, collectively, such violations are known as poaching.
Poaching, like smuggling, has a long counter-cultural history, dispassionately reported for England in "Pleas of the Forest", transgressions of the rigid Anglo-Norman Forest Law. and romanticized in literature from the time of the ballads of Robin Hood, as an aspect of the "greenwood" of Merry England. Non est inquirendum, unde venit venison ("It is not to be inquired, whence comes the venison"), observed Guillaume Budé in his Traitté de la venerie. See also the Night Poaching Act 1828 and Game Act 1831.
In modern times poaching may be illegal and in violation because
Only wild animals can be poached. Stealing or killing domestic animals is considered to be theft ("cattle rustling"), not poaching.
In Northern Kenya the illegal act of killing elephants for their tusks is on the rise because of big demand for ivory products in Asia. VICE goes to Kenya's world famous Samburu National Reserve and meets some elephant poachers and a special group of rangers, who protect the elephants from hunters.

Poaching, Drugs, and Murder in Costa Rica: Shell Game (Full Length)
Since sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica began in the 1950s, conservationists and poachers have peacefully shared the beach. With five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, the unique geography of Costa Rica is a hotspot for eco-tourism and conservation work. However, it is that same geography that makes the country so vulnerable to the violent drug trade that surrounds its borders. Costa

Fighting Rhino Poaching With Guns, Drones, and Dogs
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya battles the dramatic increase of wildlife poaching with specially trained dogs, cutting-edge drones, and heavily armed response teams. The goal is to do whatever it takes to safeguard the reserve’s populations of elephants, lions, and rhinos, including some extraordinarily endangered northern white rhinos. Only seven of these massive creatures remain, and four of them live at Ol Pejeta, relocated from a zoo in the Czech Republic in 2009 in hopes that they’ll reproduce. In this short film, filmmaker Tom Aveling not only goes behind the scenes at the sanctuary to show how the teams' methods work but also captu

Poaching, Drugs, and Murder in Costa Rica: Shell Game (Full Length)
Since sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica began in the 1950s, conservationists and poachers have peacefully shared the beach. But the murder of the environmentalist Jairo Mora Sandoval in 2013 shocked the eco-friendly country and brought attention to a violent overlap between conservationism and drug trafficking in Costa Rica’s abundant national parks and untouched coastlines.
With five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, the unique geography of Costa Rica is a hotspot for eco-tourism and conservation work. However, it is that same geography that makes the country so vulnerable to the violent drug trade that surrounds its borders. Costa Rica has become a major transshipment point for drug traffickers, with deadly consequences for those caught in the middle.
VICE News travels to Costa Rica to commemorate the two-year anniversary of environmental activist Jairo Mora Sandoval’s tragic death and meet with conservationists, poachers, drug dealers, and law enforcement about the intersecting criminality across the country.

Poaching, Drugs, and Murder in Costa Rica: Shell Game (Part 2)
Watch Part 1: http://bit.ly/1J2esAh
Since sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica began in the 1950s, conservationists and poachers have peacefully shared the beach. But the murder of the environmentalist Jairo Mora Sandoval in 2013 shocked the eco-friendly country and brought attention to a violent overlap between conservationism and drug trafficking in Costa Rica’s abundant national parks and untouched coastlines.
With five percent of the world’s biodiversity, the unique geography of Costa Rica is a hotspot for eco-tourism and conservation work. However, it is that same geography that makes the country so vulnerable to the violent drug trade that surrounds its borders. Costa Rica has become a major transshipment point for drug traffickers, with deadly consequences for those caught in the middle.
In part two of our three part series, VICE News commemorates the two-year anniversary of environmental activist Jairo Mora Sandoval’s tragic death. Locals still debate whether the murder was revenge for Jairo’s aggressive conservation work or a message from the drug trade to stay away from the beach.

In this short film, filmmaker Tom Aveling not only goes behind the scenes at the sanctuary to show how the teams' methods work but also captures stunning footage of the wildlife they’re fighting to save.

AN INJURED baby elephant is saved by a heroic rescue team after being caught in on a poacher's snare and attacked with a spear. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) was called to save the orphaned animal, named Simotua, in June, after he had been left to die in Kenya's 15,000 acre Rumuruti Forest. The one year old elephant was suffering from a large spear wound to his skull and had a deadly snare wrapped around his leg – both of which were potentially life-threatening.

Rhino Poaching Horn Removal — 'Hope for the Rhino' Campaign
This rhino had it’s horn hacked off and was left for dead before being rescued. Filmmakers Nikki Reed and Adrian Steirn set out to show how the needless pain and disfigurement of such a wonderful creature reminds us that, if we can’t save them, we’ll never save ourselves. #TheirFutureIsOurs, so join the fight to end poaching by lending your support to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation and their Hope for the Rhinos campaign.

ARMA 3 (stylized as ARMA III) is an open world tactical shooter video game developed by Bohemia Interactive for Microsoft Windows. It was released on September 12, 2013. ARMA 3's storyline takes place in the mid-2030s during the fictional Operation Magnitude, a military operation launched by NATO forces fighting in Europe against "Eastern armies" referred to as CSAT (Canton-Protocol Strategic Alliance Treaty) led by a resurgent Iran.
ARMA 3 is set 21 years after ARMA 2, in the mid-2030s, where NATO forces deployed in the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea are trying to hold off a massive Iranian military offensive from the east. During the single player campaign, the player will take the role of an American soldier, corporal Kerry. Initially, the player must survive on his own after friendly forces are defeated in a failed NATO operation. During the campaign, the player will face everything from lone wolf infiltration missions to the commanding of large scale armoured operations. The player will be able to choose different objectives and weaponry (such as UAVs, artillery, and air support) according to their play style.
ARMA 3 takes place on the Aegean islands of Altis (formerly Lemnos) and Straits of Greece, in the Mediterranean Sea. They will feature photo-realistic terrain and water environments. Altis will be the largest official terrain in the Arma series with ground area covering approximately 270 km². The smaller island, Stratis, will expand over an area of 20 km². The islands will feature over 50 villages with buildings that are both penetrable and destructible.

In part two of our three part series, VICE News commemorates the two-year anniversary of environmental activist Jairo Mora Sandoval’s tragic death. Locals still debate whether the murder was revenge for Jairo’s aggressive conservation work or a message from the drug trade to stay away from the beach.

Today, 22nd of September is World Rhino Day...Nearly 5000 rhino have been killed in South Africa since 2008. And the onslaught against South-Africa's rhino population continues. The country's biggest private rhino owner wants the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to overturn a government ban on local rhino horn trade. And while that battle plays itself out in court, South Africa first World Heritage Site is targeting a more community centered approach, as they try to put paid to poaching. Please be warned, this story contains graphic images that some viewers may find disturbing.

South Africa has been described as the only remaining hope for the world in terms of rhino conservation.
It is a reputation that the country, and Government, wishes to maintain.
Government also recognises that poaching is part of a multi-billion dollar worldwide illicit wildlife trade.
We are joined by the Deputy Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Thomson to speak to us more about how government and her department is working to combat rhino poaching.
