On October 2, 2006, a 32-year-old milk truck driver named Charles Roberts entered a one-room schoolhouse in the Amish community of Nickel Mines in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and shot 10 young girls, killing five, before committing suicide as police officers stormed the school. Just hours after the shooting, Amish community members visited the gunman's family to offer forgiveness. The tragedy at Nickel Mines horrified the nation for its senseless brutality and left many questioning and haunted by the victims' startling response. Lyrical and meditative, The Amish answers many questions Americans have about this insistently insular religious community, whose intense faith and adherence to 500-year-old traditions have by turns captivated and repelled, awed and irritated, inspired and confused for more than a century. With unprecedented access to the Amish built on patience and hard-won trust, this AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film is the first to deeply penetrate and explore this profoundly attention-averse group, painting an extraordinarily intimate portrait of contemporary Amish faith and life. What does America's attraction to the Amish say about deep American values? What does the future hold for a community whose existence is so rooted in the past?

Check out these 10 facts about the Amish.
For a group that doesn't believe in watching television, the likeness of the Amish -- and some Amish people themselves -- has been featured on many a program.
Still, there exist a lot of gaps in the story. Here are 10 things you may not know about the Amish.
Number 10. They have their own language. It's called Pennsylvania Dutch, and is called such due to the large number of Amish people living in the namesake state. The tongue is a combination of Dutch, English, and German.
Number 9. Riding in cars is fine. Owning, driving, or even having one within the confines of the community is what's forbidden.
Number 8. School attendance past the 8th grade is rare. Based on the 1972 Supreme Court ruling in Wisconsin vs. Yoder, the Amish are given an exception to regular US truancy laws on the basis of religious freedom.
Number 7. The Amish are not a cult. Their religion is of the Christian variety. One unique aspect is that they practice adult baptism. They also don't engage in evangelism.
Number 6. Beard growing doesn't start until after marriage. Marriage doesn't happen until the person's been baptized.
Number 5. The Amish don't go to church. Rather, they have community Sunday services in their own homes. On average, each family hosts once a year. Bigger communities get broken down into smaller, more manageable districts.
Number 4. Amish brides make their own dresses. That it be blue is required by some groups, but others leave the color option open. After the wedding day, the woman wears the dress for Sunday services and is eventually buried in it.
Number 3. Some technology gets the green light. The decision about what can enter the community is based upon how good it will be for it. Regardless of what's adopted, it cannot require the use of the public energy grid. The sun and batteries are the preferred power sources.
Number 2. They believe modern medicine is acceptable. However, they don't believe in insurance. Any treatment or hospital care that is required is paid for by a community fund.
Number 1. The Amish pay taxes. All sorts of them, actually - property, income, sales, and so on. What they don't participate in is the Social Security system Their opposition to it is that they see it as a form of insurance, which, as mentioned, they don't do. It's their belief that as a community, it's their responsibility to care for one another.

Today I came back from my working vacation in the United States. I was doing a test run for a new YouTube channel that will be about travelling your own way. While I was down in Pennsylvania I unexpectedly found myself in the heart of Amish Country. At one point I was stuck behind a traffic jam of roughly six or seven horse drawn carriages all attempting to make a right turn. It was one of the most surreal experiences I've had in a long time. And immediately I started observing the way that male and female Amish relate to one another and started to research how their society works. I immediately noticed that the men and women didn't mix all that much. Another shocking thing I saw was that many of the women went barefoot. Talk about a society where women are literally barefoot and pregnant. I went online and found out that their divorce rate is approaching zero percent. They are for the most part a closed society and even if you wanted to leave it would be difficult if not impossible because you'd have to learn how to use technology and get an education as most Amish people are only educated to the eighth grade level. With regards to female nature Women are not loyal to individual men instead to men that can provide them the best options in life. If you take a woman's choices away or make her choices extremely hard to make then the vast majority of women will stay where they are in life and settle for it. Sure there are some women that leave the Amish lifestyle but they have to leave their family, friends, way of life and cultural identity behind to do so. I don't want to talk about the religious reasons why the Amish do what they do. I want to instead focus on the cultural stuff. As a western culture and civilization we have let women run amok. And as I explored Amish country it showed me a prime example of how the most ideal form of traditionalism works. A form of traditionalism where women have six or seven children. They wear zero makeup, beauty products and look absolutely plain. You can't see any curves and instead focus on just their unpainted faces. On my way back to Canada I went into a McDonalds to get some ice coffee and I ran into a Mennonite group and started up a conversation with them. They are similar to the Amish but still believe in using some forms of technology. They too were on their way up to Canada to visit relatives. There were six of them. Three men and three women. This was my first chance in my entire life to see three women out in public with no makeup on. For the first time in my life I realized how boring and plain women look when they have no makeup, jewelry or sexually accentuating or revealing clothing. I saw how little physical appeal women have if they don't enhance their beauty. They look more plain then your grandmother. So I don't want any of you to worry that I'm not going to run off and become

Amish. And if anyone out there is thinking about it don't forget that the Amish people share a gene pool that comes from roughly two hundred people that originally came here from Germany.

"I'm not a historian, just a writer," retorts Amish Tripathi, author of the famed Shiva trilogy. An IIM-Calcutta graduate with an undiminished love for mathematics, Amish says he respects history but that mythology offers wider reading in country like India. On why he chose Lord Ram as his 'novel' god, he says Ram is looked upon by most 'dharmiks' as 'maryada purushottam' or the most lawful man and that's one reason for the book. He says India lost its liberal charm 1500-2000 years ago and introduced casteism, which mirrors today's elitist mentality. He also says that a person should be judged by his/her 'karma' and not by his caste. He ends this interview on a humorous note saying the actual fiction he indulged in was when he worked for a multinational company doing their insurance papers.
