"The European Union as we know it will not exist in 10 years, believe me," says Barbara Kolm, president of the Austrian Economics Center in Vienna, Austria.
While countries like Sweden have instituted successful reforms, according the Kolm, the high taxation, powerful unions, and bloated bureaucracies in most European countries will lead to the collapse of the EU's economy. Kolm's advice to policy makers in the US? "Don't become Europe."
Kolm stopped by Reason's LA studio to talk about the economic situation in Europe, the fate of the Euro, and why America should not look to the Old World for financial advice.

The European Union (EU) 
i/ˌjʊrəˈpiːənˈjuːnjən/ is an economic and political union or confederation of 27 member states which are located primarily in Europe. The EU traces its origins from the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Economic Community (EEC), formed by six countries in 1958. In the intervening years the EU has grown in size by the accession of new member states and in power by the addition of policy areas to its remit. The Maastricht Treaty established the European Union under its current name in 1993. The latest amendment to the constitutional basis of the EU, the Treaty of Lisbon, came into force in 2009.
The EU operates through a system of supranational independent institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions by the member states. Important institutions of the EU include the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Central Bank. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.

Charles "Chuck" Missler is an author, evangelical Christian, Bible teacher, former businessman and US Naval officer. He is the founder of the Koinonia House ministry based in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Missler was for several years the chairman, the chief executive, and the largest shareholder of Western Digital. In 1983 he became the chairman and chief executive of Helionetics Inc., another technology company. After teaching for many years at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, Missler moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1992 and founded Koinonia House. Through this organization, Missler distributes a monthly newsletter, Bible study tapes, and a radio show, and speaks at conferences.
Missler is a prominent speaker on the subject of bible prophecy. Missler has had numerous programs aired on the Christian television station GOD TV, namely the DVD versions of his biblical studies "Learn the Bible in 24 Hours", "The Book of Revelation", "The Book of Genesis", and "The Book of Daniel".[citation needed] A Los Angeles Times article reported that Missler and co-author Hal Lindsey had plagiarized a portion of Miami University Professor Edwin Yamauchi's 1982 book Foes From the Northern Frontier in their own 1992 book The Magog Factor. A YouTube video in which Missler uses a jar of peanut butter to attempt to disprove evolution attracted media attention in 2007-2008.

VICE News and the New York Review of Books have partnered to create Talking Heads, a series about the big issues of the day as seen by the Review's distinguished contributors.
In this episode of Talking Heads, George Soros discusses his essay "A New Policy to Rescue Ukraine." Soros wrote the essay this month, calling on members of the European Union to behave as countries indirectly at war with Russia and to provide Ukraine with $50 billion to defend itself and kick-start political reforms. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambition has unintentionally brought into being a new Ukraine that is adamantly opposed to endemic corruption and inefficient government. By offering assistance, Europe can foster an open society in Ukraine and protect itself from Russian aggression.
VICE News sat down with Soros to discuss why it is imperative that the EU wakes up and recognizes that the principles on which it was founded are at stake in Ukraine.

Joseph Lacey is a Fulbright Schuman Scholar, and a researcher at the European University Institute in Fiesole, Italy. Joseph is completing research on the structural basis of the EU's democratic deficit at Princeton University.

Galbraith, from the University of Texas, Austin; Ulrike Guérot, from the European Council on Foreign Relations; John N. Gray, Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics; Christiane Lemke, Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University; and Emmanuel Todd, a social anthropologist at the National Institute of Demographic Studies in Paris.
A print version of the forum, moderated by Harper's columnist Jeff Madrick, will appear in the February 2014 issue of the magazine.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan refused today to allow 30 migrants deported from Greece to disembark from a plane at Islamabad airport, the interior ministry said, a week after high-level talks with the European Union to settle a dispute over forced repatriations.
"On the interior minister's orders, the FIA has not allowed these illegally deported people and the aircraft crew to leave the plane," the ministry said in a statement, referring to the Federal Investigation Agency.
The ministry said the 30 were "unverified deportees" who had arrived in Islamabad on a charter flight from Greece.

So far this year, nearly 890,000 migrants and refugees have reached European shores, about four times the total in 2014, according to U.N. data. The question of how to cope with the mass inflows have caused a rift between EU governments.
Germany and France threw their weight behind a quota system to help redistribute migrants across EU members, but some of the smaller, less wealthy and more socially conservative countries in the bloc strongly rejected the idea.
Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania opposed mandatory quotas, but were outvoted at a meeting of EU interior ministers in September.
"We demand that the court rules the decision on imposing mandatory quotas is invalid," Fico told reporters.
"I consider the quotas to be nonsensical and technically impossible. Our words are being proven true, the quotas have become a fiasco."
Slovakia, which is due take in 802 migrants under the scheme, argues it has no power to keep migrants in if they wish to move on to Germany and other richer EU member states. Slovakia has only received 154 asylum requests this year.

At a time when some of Lithuania's central and eastern European peers oppose quotas for redistributing migrants within the 28-nation bloc, Vilnius agreed to receive 1,105 people and Linas Linkevicius told Reuters it was ready to consider more.
The stance of the ex-Soviet republic of some 3 million people on the migration crisis - Europe's worst since World War Two - contrasts with that of Poland, Slovakia or Hungary, which have already drawn criticism from other EU member states.
"We understand that if we need assistance, coordination, solidarity on issues that are really essential for our security, for the region, we have to act accordingly," Linkevicius said in an interview in Brussels.
"We cannot think that when we need assistance to develop roads, infrastructure, railways, energy - Europe should come and help, and when something is needed for southern Europe ... this is not our (problem)," he said. "We have to show solidarity."
He was speaking as Slovakia on Wednesday filed a lawsuit at the European Court of Justice against the EU's system of quotas agreed in September to resettle 160,000 migrants, mainly from Italy and Greece.
Amid heightened security concerns brought on by the Nov.13 Paris attacks, Poland's new right-wing government signaled it was reviewing whether it would take in the 4,500 refugees Warsaw had previously agreed to.
Hungary erected a steel fence along the country's southern border to keep out migrants.
Linkevicius warned the split over migration could have an impact on other policies such as the EU's allocation of aid funds or energy security for which member states depend on each other.
"I don't want anyone dividing our continent or the members," he said. "We are all members of the same Europe. We share the same values. We shouldn't encourage those who are trying to split us."

"All member states should contribute to the financing totalling three billion euros," German Finance Ministry State Secretary Jens Spahn told the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung on Wednesday.
"It is also a question of European solidarity."
Spain said the official request for individual payment will be put in words next week at EU finance ministers meeting.
EU pledged last week to provide 3 billion euro ($3.2 billion) aid for refugees in Turkey after sides reached a deal over aiding refugees and acceleration of Turkey’s accession talks to the union at a summit in Brussels on Sunday.

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungary's prime minister said Wednesday he expects a German-led secret pact to be revealed soon that would bring up to 500,000 Syrians from Turkey directly into the European Union, but EU leaders rejected the claim.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said a similar idea was rejected recently by European leaders but the new scheme will be announced in Berlin as soon as this week.
"This secret background agreement exists. And we will be confronted by it in the coming days," Orban said at a meeting of Hungarians from around the world. He said the plan included forcing all EU countries to take in some of the migrants, even if they are opposed to mandatory relocation quotas.
EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans, however, bluntly rejected Orban's assertion.
"I'll try to explain this in clear terms —nonsense," Timmermans said in Brussels.
On Sunday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte had said some EU nations were looking at plans to bring groups of refugees to Europe, "amounts that are much smaller than now."
"I do not recognize myself in something like that," Rutte said when asked about a newspaper claim that there was talk of 400,000 in a first group of migrants. Such figures were also rejected by officials in Belgium.
Orban said there would be "huge pressure" on countries like Hungary and others in the region to take part in the scheme.
Orban, who stated earlier that Europe's Christian identity was at risk from so many Muslims reaching the continent, said asylum-seekers were "overrunning Europe," aided by human smugglers, rights groups and some leading politicians.
"This is the absurd coalition which has resulted in us transporting these people into Europe," Orban said.
Orban repeated his view linking refugees to the deadly Paris attacks, saying the migrant wave was being used to bring "guerrillas" from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan into Europe.
