Michael A. Cremo
Historian of Archeology
Abstract:
Over the past two centuries, archaeologists have found bones, footprints, and artifacts showing that people like ourselves have existed on earth for many millions of years. But many scientists have forgotten or ignored these remarkable facts. Why? Primarily because they contradict the now dominant evolutionary views about human origins and antiquity. According to these views, humans like ourselves have existed for only about 100,000 or 200,000 years, and before that there were only more primitive human ancestors. This evolutionary paradigm, to which influential groups of scientists are deeply committed, has acted as a "knowledge filter." And the filtering, intentional or not, has left us with a radically incomplete set of facts for building our ideas about human origins. Recovering the complete set of facts takes us on a fascinating expedition, across five continents to various archaeological sites, some long forgotten, some the center of ongoing controversy. On the other hand, the complete set of facts is consistent with the accounts of extreme human antiquity found in the Puranas, the historical writings of ancient India.

Michael A. Cremo is research associate in history of archeology. He is a member of the World Archaeological Congress (WAC) since 1993. His WAC3 paper "Puranic Time and the Archaeological Record" was published in the Routledge One World Archaeology series volume Time and Archaeology (1999), edited by Tim Murray. He is also a member of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA). In 2004 Cremo's paper "The Later Discoveries of Boucher de Perthes at Moulin Quignon and Their Impact on the Moulin Quignon Jaw Controversy," presented at the XXth International Congress for History of Science, Liege, Belgium, was published in a conference proceedings volume of this congress, by the scientific publisher Brepols.
Cremo is the principal author of the book Forbidden Archeology, a comprehensive historical survey of archaeological anomalies. In a review in British Journal for History of Science, Tim Murray said the book "provides the historian of archaeology with a useful compendium of case studies in the history and sociology of scientific knowledge, which can be used to foster debate within archaeology about how to describe the epistemology of one's discipline."
Cremo is particularly interested in examining the history of the archeology from the standpoint of alternative worldviews, particularly worldviews with foundations in ancient Indian thought. He has given invited lectures on his work at the Royal Institution in London, the anthropology department of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the archeology department of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and many other scientific institutions. He has also lectured on his work at universities throughout the world.

Mummies from various dynasties throughout China's history have been discovered in several locations across the country. They are almost exclusively considered to be unintentional mummifications. Many areas in which mummies have been uncovered are difficult for preservation, due to their warm, moist climates. This makes the recovery of mummies a challenge, as exposure to the outside world can cause the bodies to decay in a matter of hours.
An example of a Chinese mummy that was preserved despite being buried in an environment not conducive to mummification is Xin Zhui. Also known as Lady Dai, she was discovered in the early 1970s at the Mawangdui archaeological site in Changsha. She was the wife of the marquis of Dai during the Han dynasty, who was also buried with her alongside another young man often considered to be a very close relative. However, Xin Zhui's body was the only one of the three to be mummified. Her corpse was so well-preserved that surgeons from the Hunan Provincial Medical Institute were able to perform an autopsy. The exact reason why her body was so completely preserved has yet to be determined.

Archaeology tells a darker story of Explorer Hernando De Soto, a tale of death and human destruction from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the mouth of the Mississippi, archeologists are not only discovering lost Native American cultures, but their excavations are also confirming the frightening truth of just how these people perished.
Hernando de Soto (October 21, 1496– May 21, 1542) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States (Florida, Georgia, Alabama and most likely Arkansas), and the first documented European to have crossed the Mississippi River.
A vast undertaking, de Soto's North American expedition ranged throughout the southeastern United States searching for gold, silver and a passage to China. De Soto died in 1542 on the banks of the Mississippi River in what is now Guachoya, Arkansas or Ferriday, Louisiana.

Incredible archaeological discoveries! These are some of the most intense ancient archaeological discoveries ever in human history.
Today we look at 8 incredible archaeological discoveries. See what unexpected things scientists have found underground.
In a dry prehistoric lake bed located near the shore of Lake Vättern in Motala, Sweden lies the Tomb of Sunken Skulls. Discovered in 2009 while excavating in preparation for a new railway to be built, a collection of skulls from 11 individuals were found. Two of these were mounted on stakes. The skulls are 8000 years old. Scientists speculate that the skulls may have been displayed in a kind of burial ritual or alternatively may have been the skulls of enemies that had been killed. Amazingly archaeologists were able to tell that fish was a big part of their diet by analyzing their bone composition. Just think in another 8000 years somebody will be saying wow they ate a lot of big macs.
The Grauballe Man, so named because he was found near the village of Grauballe in Denmark, is what’s called a bog body. Bog bodies are human bodies that have been preserved in a peat bog and Peat is dead plant material. Discovered in 1952 the Grauballe Man is one of the most well preserved bog bodies ever with his skin and even his hair and fingernails still intact. Through Radiocarbon dating we know he is over 2000 years old and lived around 300 B.C.
Researches believe he may have been the victim of a human sacrifice as his throat looks like it was slit
This is the Terracotta Army
The army was discovered in 1974 east of the city Xian (shee-ann) China and consists of more than 8000 life-sized Terracotta soldiers. In case you’re wondering what Terracotta is,
it’s clay-based and is used for stuff like those brownish orange plant pots.
The soldiers were created to protect the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang (Chin shee whuang), in the afterlife.
In the 1920s two human skull cups were found and then another in 1987 in Gough’s Cave
in Cheddar UK which interestingly is the village that Cheddar cheese is named after, which may permanently change your view of cheddar bowls.
The skulls are 14,700 years old. Researchers believe they are skull cups based on what they describe as careful percussional banging with stones all around the edges of the skull.
The practice of creating Skull cups is a worldwide phenomenon with accounts of skulls cups used in China, Japan, India, and by Vikings.
Is this a new backscratcher from Bed Bath & Beyond finally living up to the last part of their name? In 1986 a team exploring caves at Mount Owen, New Zealand found a mysterious claw while excavating. The claw belonged to a 3000 year old Upland Moa which was a flightless bird.
There were 9 known species of Moa birds and unfortunately all Moa’s are now extinct. The upland moa was the last of the Moa to become extinct in the 1500’s from hunting by humans. When humans first came in contact with the moa’s around 1250 the moa population was 58,000, it only took humans 250 years to wipe out a species. Humans can be such dicks sometimes.
Is this an alien skull? Perhaps, but scientists believe this skull found in Mexico is a human skull that is the result of a process called artificial cranial deformation. It’s usually done
when a child is an infant and the skull is softest and they bind the skull with either wood or cloth for about 6 months. Why they do this, no one really knows, but it is thought that it was a means of signifying status. Even more surprising is the fact that the practice still continues to this day in some places such as Vanuatu which is an island near fiji. However some researchers believed that the elongated skulls actually belong to a race of humans which no longer exists.
This is a Chachapoya Mummy. The Chachapoyas were known as the Warriors of the Clouds and lived in what is now Peru. It looks like this person died a truly horrifying death as if screaming and covering their face. However the hands are actually tied to the face and archaeologist suspect that the putting the hands in this configuration was just the easiest way to make the mummy compact and easy to transport. The open mouth is a common phenomenon where unless the jaw is restrained the mouth will slowly open as the body decomposes. Researchers believe that the Chachapoya did not just leave their dead but instead cared for them and possibly re-wrapped them and put them on display.
Meet La Doncella (don-saya), which translates to “The Maiden”, who is one of the Children of Llullaillaco (you-ya-yaco). The Children of Llullaillaco are three of the best preserved Inca mummies ever found. They were found by Dr Johan Rienhard and his team in 1999 at the peak of Mount Llullaillaco which is 22,100 feet (6,700 meters) high and located on the border of Chile and Argentina.
wn.com/8 Incredible Archaeological Discoveries

In this video Crossrail's lead archaeologist Jay Carver gives an overview of the intriguing finds unearthed so far, as the Liverpool Street excavation reaches the levels of Roman London.
Crossrail is undertaking a large-scale excavation at Liverpool Street. Archaeologists are working to unearth up to 3,000 skeletons from the Post-Medieval Bedlam burial ground and parts of the Roman suburbs.
There are 2,000 years of history buried beneath the site of Crossrail's Liverpool Street station, including the foundations of Broad Street railway station; the former Bedlam burial ground; Moorfields marsh; a Roman road and the Walbrook, one of London’s lost rivers.

A detailed and thorough examination of one of London's most iconic landmarks: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-archaeology-of-st-pauls-cathedral
Recent work has brought together what we know of the Anglo-Saxon and medieval cathedrals beneath and around Wren's St Paul's, the City of London's most important historic building and monument.
Now the little-known medieval cathedral, destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, can be revealed as of European importance. It dominated the City and should be compared with other cathedrals - Ely, Norwich and Winchester.
Part of the Mondays at One Autumn Series.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College Website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-archaeology-of-st-pauls-cathedral
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,500 lectures free to access or download from the website.

Survey. What is it good for?
Hello junior archaeologists and people who are curious about the lives and times of cultural resource management (CRM) archaeologists.
Basically, I am here to make videos of interest to people who have questions about what the actual job of archaeology is like.
If you have questions about what it is like to be a pampered, academic archaeologist locked away in an ivory tower of arcane knowledge, look elsewhere.
If you would like to know what sock pattern Roman centurions wore many years ago, you should definitely go elsewhere.
If you want to know more about dinosaurs, you should do a Google search on what an archaeologist is, because you are most certainly confused and looking for a different kind of smart person (whose name is unfamiliar to archaeologists everywhere).
Subscribe for content that is updated regularly...ish, depending on where I am and what sort of archaeological endeavor I am up to.

Archaeology is an interesting academic subject but George Bey, whose work was featured in a 2012 National Geographic documentary, has used it creatively to build one of the best study abroad programs in the U.S. He tells the story in this inspiring talk.
George Bey is an anthropology professor and associate dean of international education at Millsaps College. Bey led efforts to establish 4,500 acres of wilderness in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula as an archeological and biocultural reserve to study the archeological remains of the ancient Maya civilization of Kaxil Kiuic. In 2012, discoveries made by Bey and his team were featured in a 2012 National Geographic documentary, “Quest for the Lost Maya.”

Stonehenge in central southern England is known the world over as an iconic symbol of Europe's prehistoric past. In this lecture Professor Timothy Darvill of Bournemouth University, UK, will show that while Stonehenge's origins as a ceremonial monument were conventional enough its later history was exceptional. Key to the transformation was the arrival of about 80 pillars of Bluestone rock brought a distance of around 250km from the Preseli Hills of southwest Wales to Salisbury Plain. But why were these stones important? And what did they mean to Neolithic people? Using archaeological evidence from Stonehenge itself and from recent work in the Preseli Hills, and folklore and oral tradition dating back to the 13th century AD, a new picture of Stonehenge is emerging in which the stones themselves can be seen to have perceived magical properties connected with healing. Their re-use in later and ever more elaborate structures at Stonehenge show something of their power and significance and illustrate how the landscape of the Preseli Hills is constructed in microcosm at Stonehenge. People were attracted to the area from continental Europe, and what started out as a local focus became a celebrated place for prehistoric pilgrimage.

Before the 1970s, "biblical archaeology" was the dominant research paradigm for those excavating the history of Palestine. Today this model has been "weighed in the balance and found wanting." Most now prefer to speak of "Syro/Palestinian archaeology." This is not just a nominal shift but reflects a major theoretical and methodological change. It has even been labeled a revolution. In the popular mind, however, biblical archaeology is still alive and well.
In Shifting Sands, Thomas W. Davis charts the evolution and the demise of the discipline. Biblical archaeology, he writes, was an attempt to ground the historical witness of the Bible in demonstrable historical reality. Its theoretical base lay in the field of theology. American mainstream Protestantism strongly resisted the inroads of continental biblical criticism, and sought support for their conservative views in archaeological research on the ancient Near East. The Bible was the source of the agenda for biblical archaeology, an agenda that was ultimately apologetical.
Davis traces the fascinating story of the interaction of biblical studies, theology, and archaeology in Palestine, and the remarkable individuals who pioneered the discipline. He highlights the achievements of biblical archaeologists in the field, who gathered an immense body of data. By clarifying the theoretical and methodological framework of the original excavators, he believes, these data can be made more useful for current research, allowing a more sober, reasoned judgment of both the accomplishments and the failures of biblical archaeology.

This book reconstructs first-century Galilee from archaeological surveys, excavations, and artifacts, and provides descriptions of the material remains relevant to historical Jesus research and New Testament studies. Drawing on his years of field experience in Galilee, Reed illustrates how the archaeological record has been misused by New Testament scholars, and how synthesis of the material culture is foundational for understanding Christian origins in Galilee and the Jewish culture out of which they arose. Part One shows how settlement patterns and artifacts from Galilee point to close ties between Judean and Galilean Jews at the time of Jesus, and how Herod Antipas' urbanization projects at Sepphoris and Tiberias commercialized and aggravated peasant life in agrarian Galilean society. Part Two focuses on the archaeology of two Galilean sites and their import for historical Jesus research: Sepphoris, Antipas' capital and the largest city in Galilee just north of Nazareth, and Capernaum, Jesus' base of operations on the periphery of Antipas' power. Part Three concludes with studies illustrating the necessity of considering the specifically Galilean local conditions when interpreting New Testament texts. Jonathan L. Reed is Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the University of La Verne, California. He is the Field Director at the Sepphoris Acropolis Excavations and is co-author of Excavating Jesus: Beneath the Stones, Behind the Texts.

It's a different kind of archaeology textbook. Call it, 'archaeology lite.' But make no mistake, Archaeology: The Comic is something to seriously consider when deciding on what to use for your introductory archaeology class or for introducing archaeology to any beginner. In a brief 150 pages, Johannes Loubser takes the reader through every major topic in contemporary archaeology from the processual/post-processual debate to how to properly lay out a site grid —all done visually through the magic of cartooning. Follow Squizee as she discovers the inner workings of archaeology after pothunting is discovered on her family farm. Squizee is taught how to survey, excavate, analyze, interpret, and preserve archaeological sites and their material remains. She learns about site protection laws, consultation, museum exhibition and a variety of other public archaeology topics. She visits experts who explain the complexities of carbon dating, ground-penetrating radar, flotation, and thermoluminescence, among other analytical methods. And she develops an understanding of how all these tools allow archaeologists to make confident interpretations of the past. Presented visually, the complex workings of archaeology become transparent to the beginning student or the general reader. Try using Archaeology: The Comic next semester—it may not contain superheroes, but your students will think of you as one.

More than those of any other living photographer, Sebastião Salgado's images of the world's poor stand in tribute to the human condition. His transforming photographs bestow dignity on the most isolated and neglected, from famine-stricken refugees in the Sahel to the indigenous peoples of South America. Workers is a global epic that transcends mere imagery to become an affirmation of the enduring spirit of working women and men. The book is an archaeological exploration of the activities that have defined labor from the Stone Age through the Industrial Age, to the present. Divided into six categories--"Agriculture," "Food," "Mining," "Industry," "Oil" and "Construction"--the book unearths layers of visual information to reveal the ceaseless human activity at the core of modern civilization. Extended captions provide a historical and factual framework for the images. "Salgado unveils the pain, the beauty, and the brutality of the world of work on which everything rests," wrote Arthur Miller of this photobook classic, upon its original publication in 1993. "This is a collection of deep devotion and impressive skill." An elegy for the passing of traditional methods of labor and production, Workers delivers a message of endurance and hope.

Packed with examples of the photography it describes, this accessible book celebrates the role which flight and aerial photography have played in the development of archaeology and the identification and analysis of key sites in Britian. Beginning with balloonist adventurers, and pioneers of flight, it explores the parallel development of military reconaissance techniques and their usefulness to archaeologists, concentrating especially on the era between the two world wars when aerial archaeology really came of age.

Every year thousands of enthusiasts, both amateur and professional, spend the summer months digging in the sands of Israel hoping to find items that relate in some way to the places or events depicted in the Bible. Thousands more view artifacts in museums and long to know the full stories behind them. "Archaeology of the Land of the Bible, Volume II", is the essential book for all of themIn Ephraim Stern's sequel to "Archaeology of the Land of the Bible, Volume I", by Amihai Mazar, this world-renowned archaeologist who has directed excavations in the Holy Land for many years offers a dramatic look at how archaeological research contributes to our understanding of the connections between history and the stories recounted in the Bible. Stern writes about various artifacts unearthed in recent years and relates them to the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian periods in the Bible. This title is accompanied by photographs and illustrations of rare ancient relics ranging from household pottery to beautifully crafted jewelry and sculpture. His discussions bring the biblical world to life.

For more than 25 years Carl Lehrburger has studied archaeological and sacred sites in North America, with a focus on ancient peoples in America before Columbus. He discussed his latest work revealing extensive evidence for pre-Columbian explorers in ancient America, such as Celtic relics. He personally explored some of the New England sites highlighted in Barry Fell's groundbreaking book America B.C., and became convinced that Celtic writing and relics, thousands of years old, were indeed genuine, and that migrations to America came over many different periods and waves. These migrations included both trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic visitors, and one of the biggest drivers of this ancient travel was the quest for gold and silver-- in the Eastern US copper mining took place, while gold and silver were mined on the West Coast, he said. The ancient Celts left evidence of their writing system in New England, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, as well as latter day Celts leaving inscriptions in West Virginia, he said.
One of the most important examples is the site called America's Stonehenge, located in southern New Hampshire, which he characterized as a large area of Celtic stone constructions, dating back 2,000 years. A town in Arizona also dates back to this era, he suggested, and was inhabited by a Roman colony, who left behind their historical record on lead plates. Lehrburger believes there's been a deliberate attempt to keep America's true archaeological history hidden from the public.
