CHEST Foundation - Learn About Lung Biopsies
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the United States. Lung cancer has the lowest 5-year survival rate among all common cancers, but the survival rate is more than 50% when detected at an early stage and it's limited to one area of the lung. This is why early screening is so important.
Early diagnosis and treatment with surgery and/or new techniques of chemotherapy and radiation therapy may cure many patients with lung cancer. Watch the CHEST Foundation's video on lung cancer biopsies to learn how lung cancer is diagnosed and how biopsies can aid in creating targeted therapies. To learn more about lung cancer and biopsies, visit us at lungcancer.chestnet.org.

Let me tell you this...this month was the most physically demanding experience of my entire life. Although I set myself the goal to do the LA Marathon by the end of last year, life and other things happened, and ...I was left with only 4 weeks of training.
I consider myself a good runner but the furthest I've run was 12.5miles, 7 years ago!!! This one was going to be tough - 26.2 miles - you have to physically prepare your muscle tissue to work differently, your fibers to respond well to endurance. I did not have that time... I had to WING IT!
The run was going well, I was aiming for 3.45h for the first 14miles, then my legs started giving in. I was cramping up, first in my chins, then my hamstrings, then my knees started to spasm. I tried to alter my running technique to work different areas of my legs, which worked for a few miles, then other muscles would tighten up. My body wasn't prepared enough...the only thing that was prepared was MY MIND. Having to stop several times throughout the last 8miles was necessary in order for me to attempt small stretches to avoid a total body shut down.
My below 4hour goal started to vanish and it turned into pure survival... I NEEDED TO FINISH THIS RUN.
I had 5ft ladies in their 50s pass me by mile 20, several kids...maybe 12/13 years old...passed by me, still full of joy in mile 22 but I didn't care about that... I was on my own journey, my own run...I needed to finish this race and I did.
Along the way, I had total strangers offering me sliced oranges, some guy I've never met before ended up putting ice-spray onto my cramping legs and one lady literally shouting "Don't Give Up, You Are Amazing" ... it was these random acts of kindness that inspired me.
And I hope that this little story will inspire you too, to go out there and try something new, challenge your body, your mind, your willpower.
The feeling of achieving something new, for the first time in your life is priceless.
During my final yards towards the finish line, I passed by a man with a serious movement disability, he was supported by 3 people while approaching the finish line. It gave me goosebumps, it made me remember how blessed I am being able to run this thing on my own...to be able to finish it on my own.
By the time I got through the finish line, it all felt like a dream. Tears started running down my face...there was no chance of hiding my emotions. All I felt was pure GRATEFULNESS for my amazing body leading me through this challenge amidst the mountains placed in front of me.
Today I am proud of myself. I love myself & I hope I got to inspire you to start LOVING YOURSELF, too!
As we're approaching next month, I need your help... Please inspire me with ideas... what should the next DENNIS DOES look like??? GO!!!
