A procession of 34 buggies and carriages carried mourners to a hilltop cemetery in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania on Thursday as the Amish community buried the first of five girls killed by a gunman inside their tiny one-room schoolhouse.
Two state troopers on horseback led the cortege, followed by a long horse-drawn buggy carrying the body of seven-year-old Naomi Rose Ebersol.
The route wove past the home of Charles Carl Roberts IV, the 32-year-old milk truck driver who took the girls hostage on Monday morning, tied them up and then shot them.
It was the first in a series of funerals on Thursday for victims of the West Nickel Mines Amish school shooting.
All roads leading into the village of Nickel Mines were blocked by state police so the Amish could gather privately in homes to remember Ebersol, 13-year-old Marian Fisher, and sisters Mary Liz Miller, who was eight, and Lena Miller, who was seven.
The funeral for a fifth girl, 12-year-old Anna Mae Stoltzfus, was scheduled for Friday.
In Lancaster County, there were prayer services for the victims at area churches, but the traditional funerals for the girls where an expected 300 to 500 people we due to attend were closed.
Amish custom calls for simple wooden caskets, narrow at the head and feet and wider in the middle.
An Amish girl is typically laid to rest in a white dress, a cape, and a white prayer-covering on her head, said funeral director Philip W. Furman.
The Amish have actually reached out to the family of the gunman, who committed suicide during the attack in the schoolhouse.
Jacquie Hess, an aunt of Roberts' wife, said members of the Amish community comforted the Roberts family hours after the shooting and extended forgiveness to them.
Randy Fischer, a co-worker of Roberts, said he thought Roberts had "snapped".
Among Roberts' survivors are his wife and three children.
The attack on the school began Monday morning when Roberts took over the one-room school, sent the adults and boys out and bound the 10 remaining girls at the blackboard.
He was in the school for about an hour before he shot his hostages and turned the gun on himself as police closed in.

STORYLINE:
The deputy coroner who responded to Monday's school shooting in Pennsylvania described the scene she found as "horrific" on Wednesday.
Janice Ballenger found blood on every desk and the body of a girl slumped beneath the chalkboard when she arrived at the Amish school.
"I can't describe the scene, other than it was horrific," she said.
Ballenger declined to give further details, saying only that she fears she is "never going to get those images out of (her) mind."
Police on Wednesday opened the road to the tan, stucco schoolhouse, which sits across the street from a soybean field and is surrounded by fields and pastures.
All the windows and doors are boarded up and have yellow "no trespassing" signs.
Police said the gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, confided to his wife during the siege that he molested two relatives 20 years ago when he was boy and was tormented by dreams of doing it again.
Investigators also said that Roberts plotted his takeover of the school for nearly a week and the items he brought - including flexible plastic ties, eyebolts and lubricating jelly - suggest he may have been planning to sexually assault the Amish girls before police closed in.
During the standoff, Roberts told his wife in a cell phone call from the one-room schoolhouse that he molested two female relatives when they were three to five years old, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said.
Roberts would have been around 11 or 12 at the time.
The baby, Elise, died 20 minutes after being delivered, Miller said.

The death toll grew overnight from the shootings at an Amish schoolhouse in the US state of Pennsylvania.
Two more children died early on Tuesday morning of wounds from the shootings, raising the number of dead to five girls plus the gunman who was apparently spurred by a two-decade-old grudge.
A hospital spokesman said a nine-year-old girl who had been taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware died at about 0100 (0500GMT).
A seven-year-old girl died about 0430 (0830GMT) at Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey.
A hospital spokesperson said the girl's parents were with her when she was taken off the life support machine.
A Pennsylvania State police spokesperson said the two girls who died in hospitals early on Tuesday had suffered severe injuries but said others who were wounded were coming along well.
Five children remained hospitalised after Monday's school shooting, in a tranquil farming area of Lancaster County, the third in less than a week in the US.
Three girls, ages eight, ten and twelve were flown to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where they were in critical condition on Tuesday after hours of surgery.
Authorities said the gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, shot himself as police stormed the schoolhouse, which sat on a patch of grass amid pastures and farm fields.
Roberts, apparently spurred by a grudge two decades old, wrote his wife what authorities described as suicide notes, took three guns and ammunition and went to the West Nickel Mines Amish School ready for an extended siege.
Police said he had with him a stun gun, two knives, a pile of wood and a bag with 600 rounds of ammunition.
Police said he also had a change of clothing, toilet paper, bolts and hardware and rolls of clear tape.
Jeffrey B. Miller, the State Police Commissioner told reporters at the scene on Tuesday morning that investigators were looking into other events in Roberts' background.
"We're putting the pieces together. We're trying our best to make sense of something you really can't make sense of," Miller said.
Roberts, a 32-year-old father of three from the nearby town of Bart, had a daughter who died as an infant.
Miller said he was not Amish, did not appear to be targeting the Amish and apparently chose the school because he was bent on killing young girls as a way of acting out in revenge for something that happened 20 years ago.
"Obviously, this was a deeply troubled man and there were things that were not visible on the surface that were going on," Miller said.
Neighbours and others said they saw no indications of trouble like this brewing.

Incident
Roberts backed a pickup truck up to the front of the Amish schoolhouse and entered the school at approximately 10:25 a.m. EDT, shortly after the children had returned from recess. He asked the teacher, Emma Mae Zook, and the students if they had seen a missing clevis pin on the road. Survivors said that Roberts was mumbling his words and was not making direct eye contact. After the occupants of the classroom denied seeing a clevis pin, Roberts walked out to his truck and reappeared in the classroom holding a Springfield XD 9mm handgun. He ordered the boys to help him carry items into the classroom from the back of his pickup. Zook and her mother, who was visiting the schoolhouse, took this opportunity to escape the school and ran toward a nearby farm to get help. Roberts saw them leave, and ordered one of the boys to stop them, threatening to shoot everyone if the women got away.

Charles Carl Roberts
Charles Carl Roberts IV (December 7, 1973 – October 2, 2006) was an American milk truck driver who murdered five Amish girls and injured five others before killing himself in an Amish school in the hamlet of Nickel Mines, in Bart Township, Pennsylvania on October 2, 2006.
Personal life
Charles Carl Roberts IV was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His father is retired from the local police force. In 2004, his father applied to the state for a special license to provide paratransit service to the Amish. Roberts earned a diploma through a home-school association, and neither he nor his family were Amish. In 1990, Roberts worked as a dishwasher at Good 'N Plenty Restaurant in Smoketown, Pennsylvania. Roberts was a commercial milk tank driver, employed by North West Foods.
West Nickel Mines School shooting
On October 2, 2006, Roberts entered the one-room West Nickel Mines School at 9:51 a.m. with a Springfield XD 9×19mm handgun, a Browning 12 gauge shotgun, a Ruger .30-06 bolt-action rifle, about 600 rounds of ammunition, cans of black powder, a stun gun, two knives, a change of clothes, an apparent truss board and a box containing a hammer, hacksaw, pliers, wire, screws, bolts and tape. He used 2×6 and 2×4 boards with eye bolts and flex ties to barricade the school doors before binding the arms and legs of the hostages. He ordered the hostages to line up against the chalkboard and released the 15 male students present, along with a pregnant woman and three parents with infants. The remaining 10 female students he kept inside the schoolhouse. The school teacher contacted the police upon escaping at approximately 10:36 a.m. The first police officers arrived about nine minutes later and attempted (unsuccessfully) to communicate with Roberts using the PA system in their cars. Roberts called 911 and told the dispatchers that if police did not get off the "property", he would kill the hostages.

Janice Ballenger found blood on every desk and the body of a girl slumped beneath the chalkboard when she arrived at the Amish school. "I can't describe the scene, other than it was horrific," she said. Ballenger declined to give further details, saying only that she fears she is "never going to get those images out of (her) mind." Police on Wednesday opened the road to the tan, stucco schoolhouse, which sits across the street from a soybean field and is surrounded by fields and pastures. All the windows and doors are boarded up and have yellow "no trespassing" signs. Police said the gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, confided to his wife during the siege that he molested two relatives 20 years ago when he was boy and was tormented by dreams of doing it again. Investigators also said that Roberts plotted his takeover of the school for nearly a week and the items he brought - including flexible plastic ties, eyebolts and lubricating jelly - suggest he may have been planning to sexually assault the Amish girls before police closed in. During the standoff, Roberts told his wife in a cell phone call from the one-room schoolhouse that he molested two female relatives when they were three to five years old, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. A hospital spokesman said a nine-year-old girl who had been taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware died at about 0100 (0500GMT). A seven-year-old girl died about 0430 (0830GMT) at Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. A hospital spokesperson said the girl's parents were with her when she was taken off the life support machine. A Pennsylvania State police spokesperson said the two girls who died in hospitals early on Tuesday had suffered severe injuries but said others who were wounded were coming along well. Five children remained hospitalised after Monday's school shooting, in a tranquil farming area of Lancaster County, the third in less than a week in the US. Three girls, ages eight, ten and twelve were flown to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where they were in critical condition on Tuesday after hours of surgery. Two state troopers on horseback led the cortege, followed by a long horse-drawn buggy carrying the body of seven-year-old Naomi Rose Ebersol.
The route wove past the home of Charles Carl Roberts IV, the 32-year-old milk truck driver who took the girls hostage on Monday morning, tied them up and then shot them.
It was the first in a series of funerals on Thursday for victims of the West Nickel Mines Amish school shooting.
All roads leading into the village of Nickel Mines were blocked by state police so the Amish could gather privately in homes to remember Ebersol, 13-year-old Marian Fisher, and sisters Mary Liz Miller, who was eight, and Lena Miller, who was seven.
The funeral for a fifth girl, 12-year-old Anna Mae Stoltzfus, was scheduled for Friday.
In Lancaster County, there were prayer services for the victims at area churches, but the traditional funerals for the girls where an expected 300 to 500 people we due to attend were closed.
Amish custom calls for simple wooden caskets, narrow at the head and feet and wider in the middle.
An Amish girl is typically laid to rest in a white dress, a cape, and a white prayer-covering on her head, said funeral director Philip W. Furman.
The Amish have actually reached out to the family of the gunman, who committed suicide during the attack in the schoolhouse.
Jacquie Hess, an aunt of Roberts' wife, said members of the Amish community comforted the Roberts family hours after the shooting and extended forgiveness to them.
Randy Fischer, a co-worker of Roberts, said he thought Roberts had "snapped".

STORYLINE:
The deputy coroner who responded to Monday's school shooting in Pennsylvania described the scene she found as "horrific" on Wednesday.
Janice Ballenger found blood on every desk and the body of a girl slumped beneath the chalkboard when she arrived at the Amish school.
"I can't describe the scene, other than it was horrific," she said.
Ballenger declined to give further details, saying only that she fears she is "never going to get those images out of (her) mind."
Police on Wednesday opened the road to the tan, stucco schoolhouse, which sits across the street from a soybean field and is surrounded by fields and pastures.
All the windows and doors are boarded up and have yellow "no trespassing" signs.
Police said the gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, confided to his wife during the siege that he molested two relatives 20 years ago when he was boy and was tormented by dreams of doing it again.
Investigators also said that Roberts plotted his takeover of the school for nearly a week and the items he brought - including flexible plastic ties, eyebolts and lubricating jelly - suggest he may have been planning to sexually assault the Amish girls before police closed in.
During the standoff, Roberts told his wife in a cell phone call from the one-room schoolhouse that he molested two female relatives when they were three to five years old, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said.
Roberts would have been around 11 or 12 at the time.
The baby, Elise, died 20 minutes after being delivered, Miller said.

"The thing that I can't get out of my mind - one thing is this cute sign that said, 'Visitors bring joy to our school.' I kept looking at that thinking, this visitor didn't bring joy to the school. They're so open, they're so trusting, as all children, they're so innocent. And all around that sign - 'Visitors bring joy to our school' - were the smiley faces. That visitor did not bring joy."

The death toll grew overnight from the shootings at an Amish schoolhouse in the US state of Pennsylvania.
Two more children died early on Tuesday morning of wounds from the shootings, raising the number of dead to five girls plus the gunman who was apparently spurred by a two-decade-old grudge.
A hospital spokesman said a nine-year-old girl who had been taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware died at about 0100 (0500GMT).
A seven-year-old girl died about 0430 (0830GMT) at Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey.
A hospital spokesperson said the girl's parents were with her when she was taken off the life support machine.
A Pennsylvania State police spokesperson said the two girls who died in hospitals early on Tuesday had suffered severe injuries but said others who were wounded were coming along well.
Five children remained hospitalised after Monday's school shooting, in a tranquil farming area of Lancaster County, the third in less than a week in the US.
Three girls, ages eight, ten and twelve were flown to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where they were in critical condition on Tuesday after hours of surgery.
Authorities said the gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, shot himself as police stormed the schoolhouse, which sat on a patch of grass amid pastures and farm fields.
Roberts, apparently spurred by a grudge two decades old, wrote his wife what authorities described as suicide notes, took three guns and ammunition and went to the West Nickel Mines Amish School ready for an extended siege.
Police said he had with him a stun gun, two knives, a pile of wood and a bag with 600 rounds of ammunition.
Police said he also had a change of clothing, toilet paper, bolts and hardware and rolls of clear tape.
Jeffrey B. Miller, the State Police Commissioner told reporters at the scene on Tuesday morning that investigators were looking into other events in Roberts' background.
"We're putting the pieces together. We're trying our best to make sense of something you really can't make sense of," Miller said.
Roberts, a 32-year-old father of three from the nearby town of Bart, had a daughter who died as an infant.
Miller said he was not Amish, did not appear to be targeting the Amish and apparently chose the school because he was bent on killing young girls as a way of acting out in revenge for something that happened 20 years ago.
"Obviously, this was a deeply troubled man and there were things that were not visible on the surface that were going on," Miller said.
Neighbours and others said they saw no indications of trouble like this brewing.
