Plot: Summer, 2008: John McCain secures the nomination, but polls behind Barack Obama. Strategist Steve Schmidt suggests a game changer: picking a conservative female with media savvy, unknown Alaska governor Sarah Palin, as vice president. She's an immediate hit and a quick study - the gap closes. Then, Tina Fey's impersonation, a raft of criticism, and missing her family send Palin into a near-catatonic state: she doesn't prepare for her Katie Couric interview and bombs. Schmidt searches for an answer: don't expect her to learn the issues, but give her a script. Palin does well in the debate with Biden; she finds her voice, goes off script, and goes rogue. A mistake?

Quotes:
Steve Schmidt: You seem totally unfazed by all this.::Sarah Palin: It's God's plan.
John McCain: You're one of the leaders of the party now Sarah. Don't get co-opted by Limbaugh and the other extremists. They'll destroy the party if you let them.
Steve Schmidt: Still think she's fit for office?::Rick Davis: Aw, who cares. In forty-eight hours no one will even remember who she is.
Anderson Cooper: If you had to do it over again, would you have her on the ticket?::Steve Schmidt: You don't get to go back in time, Anderson and have do-overs in life.
John McCain: And they said we were dead. Next stop the White House!
Rick Davis: Listen, I too wish that the American people would choose the future Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson, but unfortunately, that's not the way it works anymore. Now it takes movie-star charisma to get elected President, and Obama and Palin, that's what they are - they're stars.::Steve Schmidt: Primary difference being Sarah Palin can't name a Supreme Court decision, whereas Barack Obama was a constitutional law professor.::Rick Davis: Fuck you.
Woman: I can't trust Obama. I've read about him and he's not a... he's a... he's a arab. He's not an Americ...::John McCain: No, ma'am. No, ma'am. He's a decent family man citizen who I just happen to have some disagreements with on certain fundamental issues. And that's what this campaign is all about.
Sarah Palin: Why'd you make me do Katie Couric? Did you see the coverage? Did you? [silence] ARE YOU THERE? ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?::Nicolle Wallace: Yes, Governor, I'm here. Katie was a logical choice; she's been very fair to us this entire campaign.::Sarah Palin: You call that interview fair?::Nicolle Wallace: Yes, Governor, I do.::Sarah Palin: I certainly don't, she was out to get me from the get-go!::Nicolle Wallace: No, she wasn't! The interview sucked because you didn't try!::Sarah Palin: What, what do you mean I didn't try?::Nicolle Wallace: You didn't fight back, like you did in the Charlie Gibson interview - when you didn't know the answers, you clawed your way back and it went fine! You just gave up!::Sarah Palin: [through gritted teeth] Nicole, it wasn't my fault; I wasn't... properly... prepped!::Nicolle Wallace: [angrily] You weren't properly prepped because you wouldn't LISTEN to us! You never LISTEN to your advisers!::Sarah Palin: [heatedly] Because you're overwhelming me with TOO MUCH INFORMATION! You know, I-I don't, I don't wanna do these interviews! I want to do what I want to do!::Nicolle Wallace: [sighs] We're just trying to help you get through this, Governor. All we want is for you to succeed.::Sarah Palin: [scoffs] Yeah, you're NOT helping! You're just screwing me up! You're telling me what to say, what to wear, how to talk... I AM NOT YOUR PUPPET! NOW I understand what Hillary meant when she said she had to find her own voice!::Nicolle Wallace: [incredulously] Yeah... cause you're just like Hillary.::Sarah Palin: You have ruined me! You have ruined my reputation! I AM RUINED IN ALASKA! [throws phone against the wall]::Nicolle Wallace: [shakes head, calls Steve Schmidt] Steve, it's Nicole. I will gladly resign if you want to blame me for Couric, but if you want me to stay, I'm back on McCain's bus tomorrow, as I never want to deal with that woman ever again!
Jack Cafferty: [news clips analyzing Sarah Palin] If John McCain wins, this woman will be one 72 year-old's heartbeat away from being President of the United States... and if that doesn't scare the hell out of you, it should.::Campbell Brown: In fairness, probably most people can't name a Supreme Court case. But most people are not campaigning to be Vice-President.::Fareed Zakaria: It's not that she doesn't know the right answer, it's that she clearly does not understand the question. This is way beyond anything we have ever seen from a national candidate.

Plot: Set in Belfast in 1972, the politically naïve Bernie is trying to bring up a normal family in less than normal surroundings. Her best friend is accidentally shot dead by the IRA, and her neighbours are constantly raided by the army. In this climate of fear and confusion, she dares to stand up and condemn the killings. Criticising both factions equally, her public call for a ceasefire is interpreted by many as an attack against the IRA, and as her fledgling peace movement takes momentum, she and her family are placed in the frontline.

There were some moments during the third Republican Presidential debate where the discussion got out of hand. With ten candidates on the stage, everyone was trying to jam a word in edgewise. At a certain point, we didn’t know if we were watching a debate or “The View.”

Carly Fiorina
For the second debate in a row, Fiorina was once again the breakout star of the night, taking on Republican front-runner Donald Trump with finesse and capturing the crowd with polished, zinging answers and an impassioned charge against abortion.
Fiorina earned perhaps the biggest applause of the night as she skewered Planned Parenthood.
Fiorina dodged an early opportunity to hit Trump but didn't make that mistake again when she was asked to address the businessman's recent comments about her appearance to Rolling Stone, in which he suggested her face would make her unelectable.
Fiorina takes on Trump
New York journalist and CNN contributor Errol Louis said after the debate that Fiorina was "the clearest winner."
Marco Rubio
Rubio proved Wednesday night why so many GOP elites have long considered him a top contender for the Republican nomination: He can weave his strong handle of policy with a compelling personal narrative.
Rubio took on Trump differently than Fiorina or Bush, dispatching the front-runner without attacking him directly, instead steering the debate toward his strengths.
When Trump pointed out Rubio's voting absences in the Senate, Rubio refused to retort with an attack of his own.
Jeb Bush
"You know what? As it relates to my brother, there's one thing I know for sure. He kept us safe," Bush told Trump to one of his strongest applause moments of the night. "You remember the fire fighter with his arms around it? He sent a clear signal that the United States would be strong and fight Islamic terrorism, and he did keep us safe."
And he also successfully tackled Trump over the billionaire's suggestion that Bush's Mexican-American wife was the reason for his support for comprehensive immigration reform.
"To subject my wife into the middle of a raucous political conversation was completely inappropriate, and I hope you apologize for that, Donald," Bush said. "Why don't you apologize to her right now." Trump declined.
Chris Christie
"While I'm as entertained as anyone by this personal back-and-forth about the history of Donald and Carly's career, for the 55-year-old construction worker out in that audience tonight who doesn't have a job, who can't fund his child's education, I've got to tell you the truth. They could care less about your careers, they care about theirs," Christie said. "Let's start talking about that on this stage and stop playing -- and stop playing the games."
Earlier in the night, Christie suggested the problem with the debate was "we're fighting with each other up here" over how to approach defunding Planned Parenthood even though "we agree."
Unclear
Donald Trump
Trump stumbled in responding to Fiorina's deft answer to his comments about her face, awkwardly calling her "beautiful" after suggesting her looks would keep Americans from voting for her.
Former Bush aide and CNN political commentator Ana Navarro spoke highly of the move.
And when Bush attacked him for a "lack of judgment" and "lack of understanding about how the world works," Trump resorted to an oft-used tactic of tying Bush to his brother's presidency suggesting that "your brother's administration gave us Barack Obama because it was such a disaster ... that Abraham Lincoln couldn't have been elected."
Bush's quick answer -- that his brother kept the country safe -- knocked Trump off balance as the crowd roared in approval.
And as he faced questions over foreign policy and his flubbed response to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, who was one of the debate's questioners, Trump smartly pivoted to Hewitt, insulating himself from further attacks from his rivals.
Conservative analyst Mercedes Schlapp said Trump was silent for more than 30 minutes of discussion n serious policy issues.

7 things to watch at the CNN Republican debate.
Simi Valley, California (CNN)—Donald Trump will play the lead role in the second Republican presidential debate tonight -- but his rivals are jockeying to steal his spotlight.
As the GOP's frontrunner, Trump will once again take center stage at CNN's debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. With Reagan's Air Force One as the backdrop, Trump will be flanked by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who has been increasingly eager to take on the combative businessman.
Meanwhile, one newcomer to the prime-time debate -- Carly Fiorina -- seems poised and ready to take on Trump directly.
With the Iowa caucuses less than five months away and pressure mounting for the middle-tier candidates, the CNN debate offers an opening for candidates to deliver a presidential performance -- and avoid getting lost in the Donald Trump show. But a misstep could damage their presidential prospects.
Here are seven things to watch in tonight's debate:
What will Trump say this time?
The question isn't whether Trump will shock and awe -- but how?
At last month's GOP debate, the wealthy real estate magnate had the audience both booing and cheering within minutes of taking the stage, when he refused to rule out a third-party run and took a shot at comedian Rosie O'Donnell.
His unorthodox performance has only fueled his popularity -- his national numbers have gone up and he's leading in key states like Iowa and New Hampshire.
But while Trump will no doubt deliver another explosive performance Wednesday, the debate stage this week will probably feel more hostile than last time.
Trump vs. Fiorina
Can Fiorina do the impossible -- and upstage The Donald?
With a standout performance at the first GOP debate and a subsequent uptick in the polls, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO won a spot at the main debate alongside her top-ranking rivals. With her quick, effortless delivery and sharp attack lines, Fiorina seems one of the best equipped in Wednesday's lineup to take Trump head-on.
Dan Pfeiffer, former adviser to President Barack Obama, said Monday on "The Lead" that Trump may be better off staying away from Fiorina altogether.
What hand will Carson play?
Carson's devout faith is one of his most powerful political assets.
A Seventh Day Adventist, Carson speaks openly about his spiritual beliefs on the campaign trail. His appeal to evangelicals is proving to be particularly potent in a state like Iowa, which has a sizeable population of born-again Christians.
The Bush reboot
Under fire from Trump for lacking charisma, Bush is trying to ditch his old self. The new Bush is more confrontational, personable and energetic.
The reboot signals an acknowledgment that taking the backseat and waiting for Trump's campaign to implode is -- at least right now -- a losing game.
Can Scott Walker salvage his campaign?
He was supposed to be an A-list candidate.
But these days, Walker is simply trying to stop the slide in his poll numbers.
The Wisconsin governor has lost his lead in Iowa, a state now dominated by Trump. Only 3% of GOP caucus-goers in the Hawkeye State said they were supporting Walker in a recent Quinnipiac University poll.

Tonight’s Catfight: Donald Trump vs. The Republican Establishment. Trump has been leading for three months now, and the GOP is starting to panic because Trump doesn’t listen to them. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"On Friday, Donald Trump generated substantial controversy when he asserted that George W. Bush was president at the time of the 9/11 attacks.
“When you talk about George Bush, I mean, say what you want, the World Trade Center came down during his time,” Trump said. “He was president, O.K.?”
Jeb Bush immediately pushed back, calling Trump’s comments “pathetic” and insisting “my brother kept us safe.”
The media jumped on to the burgeoning controversy. According to The New York Times the idea that Bush was president on 9/11 and failed to stop the attack is a “break from the GOP.””*

"At a New York City fundraiser Monday night, President Obama poked fun at Republican candidates' outrage over last week's CNBC debate — pointing out that they've been complaining about tough debate questions even though they love to brag about how much more easily they'd handle Russian President Vladimir Putin. Here's what he said:
"Have you noticed that every one of these candidates say, ‘Obama's weak. Putin's kicking sand in his face. When I talk to Putin, he's gonna straighten out. Just lookin' at him, he's gonna be...' [trails off]”*

Republican Presidential Debate 2015 Full GOP Republican Debate FOX Business Network Full Republican Presidential Debate 2015 GOP Debate FOX Business Network All told, the candidates spent no time attacking a reasonably well-moderated debate, and although there were a few intra-candidate attacks, none seemed particularly notable. Marco Rubio was polished. Rand Paul played a bigger role than he has in previous debates. Donald Trump was relatively reserved. Ben Carson certainly helped himself with his performance. Carly Fiorina acquitted herself okay, too. I can't see this debate stopping Jeb Bush's slide or doing anything significant for John Kasich. On foreign policy, the interventionism of the field as a whole is intense. On domestic policy, all have aired tax plans that have no chance of becoming law. The winner: Americans, because this debate lasted about two rather than three hours. —Conor Friedersdorf
11:20 pm: Takeaway from Milwaukee: Brace for a new round of Rubio-rising stories. He came into this debate with momentum and he performed to expectations. His trendline is up and will keep going up, though questions remain about his ability to turn elite opinion into votes. Jeb was practically a nonfactor. He is just not good at this, and besides a couple of prescripted answers, he did nothing to stand out. The Jeb-death-watch narrative will also continue after this. Trump was sort of subdued, but he's never that good in debates. Same with Carson—his voters don't care that he's borderline incoherent on any substantive questions. Kasich, as usually, seems to have infuriated base conservatives while appealing to moderates and liberal Republicans. Cruz was also strong. Like the last debate, he and Rubio are going to get the buzz out of this.
In a lot of ways this debate ratifies the status quo going in. No game-changers in that sense. Rand Paul showed up for the first time, but it's not clear he has much of a constituency in this party. —Molly Ball
11:18 pm: At the start of the debate, I wondered whether Jeb Bush’s decision to hire a media trainer would show on the debate stage and it did, a little bit. Bush’s delivery seems to have improved, but maybe not enough to get him out of his low polling digits. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio again delivered a strong performance. What the two didn’t do is go head-to-head like they had in the last Republican debate. Maybe because doing so just wouldn’t work. It certainly didn’t for Bush then and it’s unlikely it would have for Rubio tonight. And it also may answer the question my colleague Russell Berman noted earlier: Will Bush leave his Super PAC to do the dirty work? Looks like that’s a strong possibility. —Priscilla Alvarez

11:15 pm: Rubio, remembering why he's here tonight, unlike some of his competitors: "I ask you for your vote." —Marina Koren
11:14 pm: Cruz: "If we get back to the free-market principles and constitutional liberties that built this country, we can turn this nation around." —Molly Ball
11:13 pm: In contrast, Spain needs a divider-in-chief to amicably part with the Catalonians and Basques. —Conor Friedersdorf

FULL- CNN Republican Presidential Debate, GOP DEBATE Part 1 Sept. 16, 2015.

Donald Trump at the RJC forum who started his speech by mentioning his daughter — Donald Trump on Thursday over Trump's assertion that Israel should "sacrifice certain things" to achieve peace in the Middle East. "Some in our own party actually question Israel's commitment to peace," Donald Trump spoke to the Republican Jewish Coalition today, and like most Trump speeches, it was basically him throwing out various hot takes, only this time mixed in with some weird stereotyping and a few boos. Trump touted his past and current support for Israel, bragging that he would “do more for Israel than everybody else.” But at various points during his speech earlier, he made some observations about how there must be a lot of people in the room who negotiate deals. He said, “Is there anybody that doesn’t negotiate deals in this room?… Perhaps more than any room I’ve ever spoken to.” And not only did he repeatedly talk about the deal-making skills of himself and the people in the room, he surmised that probably the reason the group won’t support him is because he won’t take their money: “You’re not gonna support me, even though you know I’m the best thing that could ever happen to Israel, and I’ll be that. I know why you’re not gonna support me, you’re not gonna support me because I don’t want your money. Isn’t it crazy? No, it’s true. If I wanted your money, I think I’d have a damn good chance, and I think I’d get more money than everybody else.”
During the brief Q&A; session, Trump was repeatedly asked about his thoughts on an Israeli peace deal and his position on the ’67 borders. Trump said, “I want to wait till I meet with Bibi [Netanyahu].”
There were a few boos in the audience for his dodge. Trump responded, “Who’s the wiseguy? Do me a favor, just relax, okay? You’ll like me very much, believe me.”
You can watch Trump’s entire speech above. the Florida Senator told a gathering of the influential Republican Jewish Coalition. "Some in our own party actually call for more sacrifice from the Israeli people. They are dead wrong, and don't understand the enduring bond between Israel and America." In an interview with the Associated Press published earlier Thursday, Trump said Israel might have to make concessions to Palestinians to reach a peace accord. "A lot will have to do with Israel and whether or not Israel wants to make the deal -- whether or not Israel's willing to sacrifice certain things," the real-estate mogul said. "They may not be, and I understand that, and I'm OK with that. But then you're just not going to have a deal." ("If I win, I'll let you know six months from the time I take office" if a Middle East peace agreement is possible, Trump pledged.) Trump is scheduled to speak to the RJC in Washington later Thursday. So will former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who penned a Fox News op-ed ahead of his appearance. made a series of comments praising the Jewish audience’s negotiating skills. After attempting to connect with the audience by saying that he’s “a negotiator like you folks,” he again circled back to the same point. “Is there anyone in this room who doesn’t negotiate deals?” he asked. “Probably more than any room I’ve ever spoken.” At another point, he told the audience: “I don’t want your money so therefore you’re probably not going to support me.” Reporters in attendance immediately questioned his remarks, saying that his “racism does not discriminate.”
