In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. Also, the willingness to exploit and abuse the people and resources of so-called "primitive" nations was very helpful in the whole enterprise.

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism, but not from the perspective of the colonizers. This week John looks at some Asian perspectives on Imperialism, specifically writers from countries that were colonized by European powers. We'll look at the writings of Sayyid Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani from the Middle East, Liang Qichao from China, and Rabindranath Tagore from India. these voices from the countries that were colonized give us a sense of how conquered people saw their conquerors, and gives an insight into what these nations learned from being dominated by Europe. It's pretty interesting, OK? A lot of this episode is drawn from a fascinating book by Pankaj Mishra called The Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia. You should read it.

The violent overthrow of Haiti’s President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1991 and 2004 coups has ripped aside the democratic pretensions of US and the other major powers.
In 1990, Haiti -the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere- brought to power Aristide, its first elected president. In September 1991, Jean-Bertrand Aristide was deposed in a bloody military coup orchestrated by the US. He was eventually returned to power by US intervention, only to be overthrown yet again in 2004.
This Press TV production is a chronicle of US destabilization campaign in Haiti and brings us up to today, 11 years on from the coup. It reveals how behind the scenes the world’s imperial powers still use cunning mechanisms to keep Haiti in their pockets and impede its national sovereignty and democracy.

China, Buddhism, Mao, mental health, American cultural imperialism
"Revolution is not a dinner party, nor an essay, nor a painting, nor a piece of embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another."
— Mao, February 1927.[84]

Donbass Volunteer: We are at war with American Imperialism

Referendums on the status of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, parts of Ukraine that together make up the Donbass region, took place in May 2014 under the control of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. These referendums sought to legitimise their establishment as independent republics (Novorossia), in the aftermath of the 2014 coup d’etat in the Ukraine.
The results of the referendums voted in favour of secession but were not recognised by Western states. Since then, the war in the Donbass is estimated to have cost around 8,000 lives by Kiev's estimates. German itell suggests these figures are as high as 50,000 and are being shunned by the Ukrainian government.
In Western media, there is generally no mention of the Ukrainian army carrying out, what is essentially, a genocide against ethnically Russian civilians in the East of Ukraine. Headlines point to “separatists” and “rebels” in the East, which is outwardly loaded language that isn't applied elsewhere in the world. The people of Quebec, Canada for example, twice voted in an independence referendum but fell slightly short.
Zbegniew Brzezinski, a former National Security Advisor to President Carter and an influential thinker in US Foreign Policy today, identified the Ukraine as one of five geopolitical “pivot” points. In 1997, he wrote that “it is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus also of challenging America.” With the eastward expansion of NATO during the last 20 years, we are now seeing the Atlanticist project reach its Ukrainian pivot point.
Russia is well aware of the funding sources of the war [US State department] in the Donbass and for what purposes it is being carried out.
It becomes immediately obvious that the loss of Crimea was a significant and unexpected blow to any geopolitical doctrine put forward in 1997, rendering the outcome of this conflict somewhat unpredictable.
Volunteers from Russia, as expressed in this interview, are not there to fight the Ukraine, but to fend off American imperialism. US incursion; the orchestrating of the coup d'etat and the training of Ukrainian troops by NATO is a direct threat to Russia’s security.

For those of you who think I am just doing what the Chinese government recommends read this: Interested in history, "Mao was inspired by the military prowess and nationalistic fervour of George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte." Mao seems to have been inspired by masons and atheistic jews in secret societies.- "Zedong too became a Buddhist, but abandoned this faith in his mid-teenage years" " Inspired by Friedrich Paulsen, the liberal emphasis on individualism led Mao to believe that strong individuals were not bound by moral codes but should strive for the greater good; that the end justifies the means.[33] Seeing no use in his son's intellectual pursuits, Mao's father cut off his allowance, forcing him to move into a hostel for the destitute.[" "Zhang banned the Student Association, but Mao continued publishing after assuming editorship of liberal magazine New Hunan (Xin Hunan) and offering articles in popular local newspaper Justice (Ta Kung Po). Several of these articles advocated feminist views, calling for the liberation of women in Chinese society; Mao was influenced by his forced arranged-marriage" "The U.S. State department in 1976 estimated that there may have been a million killed in the land reform, and 800,000 killed in the counter-revolutionary campaign.[172]Mao himself claimed that a total of 700,000 people were killed in attacks on "counter-revolutionaries" during the years 1950–52.[173] However, because there was a policy to select "at least one landlord, and usually several, in virtually every village for public execution",[174] the number of deaths range between 2 million[174][175] and 5 million.[176][177]In addition, at least 1.5 million people,[178] perhaps as many as 4 to 6 million,[179] were sent to "reform through labour" camps where many perished.[179] Mao played a personal role in organizing the mass repressions and established a system of execution quotas,[180] which were often exceeded.[170] He defended these killings as necessary for the securing of power.[181]" " in his biography of Mao, Philip Short notes that in theYan'an Rectification Movement, Mao gave explicit instructions that "no cadre is to be killed", but in practice allowed security chief Kang Sheng to drive opponents to suicide and that "this pattern was repeated throughout his leadership of the People's Republic."[7]" "rograms pursued during this time include the Hundred Flowers Campaign, in which Mao indicated his supposed willingness to consider different opinions about how China should be governed. Given the freedom to express themselves, liberal and intellectual Chinese began opposing the Communist Party and questioning its leadership. This was initially tolerated and encouraged. After a few months, Mao's government reversed its policy and persecuted those, totalling perhaps 500,000,[citation needed] who criticised, as well as those who were merely alleged to have criticised, the party in what is called the Anti-Rightist Movement. Authors such as Jung Chang have alleged that the Hundred Flowers Campaign was merely a ruse to root out "dangerous" thinking.[185.....see comments
