The main part of my holiday to Yorkshire was to visit one of my favorite heritage lines, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, running 18 miles from Pickering through the moors to Grosmont and continues for another 6 miles towards the coast for Whitby. Sadly however this visit was at a time the railway was suffering with a steam locomotive shortage as 6 engines in the running fleet were out for repairs, so some diesel traction had to be used to keep the trains running with some minor timetable alterations on Thursdays. No matter as the visit was still a very enjoyable one with plenty to see and do along the railway.
Locomotives in action during my visit -
|BR 4-6-0 4MT Class no 75029 'The Green Knight'
|BR 2-6-0 4MT Class no 76079
|BR Class 37 37264
|BR Class 25 D7628 'Sybilla'
I visited the railway over 4 days (Monday 29th June - Thursday 2nd July) with 3 of the days spent linesiding while 1 day was used to just enjoy a trip along the railway. The weather was stunning over the course of the week due to a heat wave which resulted in clear blue skies and light wind.
I highly recommend this railway for a day out, it is a absolute beautiful line with such stunning views of the moors and really friendly staff and volunteers. I was also generally impressed with how well the railway coped with the locomotive shortage. This is possibly my last holiday to North Yorkshire for quite some time, so I wanted to get as much out of my visit as possible, hence the 30 minute long video :P
The locomotives feature at the following locations -
75029: Grosmont, Beck Hole, Goathland, Moorgates, New Bridge and Darnholme Bridge
76079: Sleights, Grosmont, Water Ark, Darnholme, Moorgates and Pickering
37264: Darnholme Bridge and Goathland

On 30 December 2014, officers from the North Yorkshire Police Road Crime Team headed into the Durham area in an attempt to locate a stolen Mercedes motor vehicle that had been taken along with jewellery and cash in a burglary near Whitby the previous evening.
Whilst searching for the vehicle without success, the team were alerted to a vehicle that had been seen travelling near to the stolen Mercedes the previous evening, and was now believed to be in the Easington area in County Durham.
Two vehicles from the Road Crime Team attempted to stop the vehicle, which failed to stop and then led the team on a 24-minute pursuit into Durham.
Assisted by colleagues from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, the vehicle was pursued into a multi-storey car park where the four occupants fled from the vehicle.
Two men were arrested at the scene. 43-year-old Christopher Gibson was charged with a burglary offence committed in Reading on 1 July 2014, and sentenced to two years and four months’ imprisonment.
No further action was taken against the second male arrested.
The driver of the Vauxhall Vectra, 41-year-old Wayne Kelsey, was later identified and in June 2015 was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for an unconnected firearms offence along with 12 months’ imprisonment to be served consecutively for dangerous driving on 30 December 2014. He was also disqualified from driving for three years.
The fourth occupant, 38-year-old Louise McCarroll, was found to have sold £20,000 worth of jewellery stolen in a burglary a short time prior to the police pursuit. She was subsequently sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment suspended for 12 months for handling stolen goods.
No further action was taken in relation to the Whitby burglary.
Operation Hawk is North Yorkshire Police's campaign to clamp down on rural and cross-border crime. This is supported by the Road Crime Team who specialise in countering cross-border criminality through the use of high-performance patrol cars, supported by an expanding network of ANPR cameras. Working across force borders the team will relentlessly pursue offenders that impact on the public of North Yorkshire.

At the eastern edge of the National Park the land meets the North Sea. For thousands of years rain, ice, wind and waves have carved and shaped this coastline into the scenery we see today. Here you will find sandy beaches, rocky shores, towering cliffs, steep wooded valleys or 'wykes', sheltered bays and fascinating villages.
Along this coastline there are many seaside villages with higgledy piggledy cottages and narrow, winding streets clinging onto the cliffs. The villages developed because of the fishing industry. There are only a few fishermen left now but many local people make a living from hotels, cafés, shops and other services for the tourists who visit the coast. Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes are popular villages (or honey pot sites) for visitors.
