Bhakra Nangal dam is the world's highest straight gravity dam, constructed across the River Satluj. This dam is located at a distance of about 116 kms from Chandigarh.
Bhakra Nangal Dam is a concrete gravity-arch dam across the Sutluj River near the border between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The dam was part of the larger multipurpose Bhakra Nangal Project whose aims were to prevent floods in the Sutlej-Beas river valley, to provide irrigation to adjoining states and to provide hydro-electricity.
Bhakra Nangal project is committed for nation’s development through eco-friendly generation of electric power from water known as hydroelectricity. It has an installed capacity to generate 1478.72 MW of electric power.
The reservoir of Bhakra Nangal Dam is known as the Gobind Sagar stores up to 9.34 billion cubic metres of water enough to drain the whole of Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam is spread over an area of 168.35 km2. In terms of storage of water, it withholds the second largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m.
The dam was constructed with an aim to provide irrigation to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Another reason behind the construction of the dam was to prevent damage due to monsoon floods. The power generated at Bhakra Power houses is distributed among partner states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat
The construction work of Bhakra Nangal Dam began in 1948 and got completed in 1963.
Features of Bhakra Nangal Dam includes :
1) 4 spillway radial gates with each gate is weighing 102 tons and having dimensions of 50’x 47.5’.
2) The spillway crest level is around 1645 ft. and the gate sill level is around 1642 ft.
3) The Bhakra dam has maximum opening of 9.8 M with a total discharge of 1,97,300 cusecs.

Nangal
Nangal, is a Municipal Council in Rupnagar district in the Punjab, India. It is 60 km from Rupnagar in the state of Punjab in northwest India. It sits at the foot of the Shiwalik Hills where it was established after plans for a dam required the movement of previously established villages. Residential areas include Shiwalik Avenue, Naya Nangal Township, BBMB Township and downtown Nangal.
History
The name Nangal came from the name of village Nangal Nikku. Present Nangal is situated on the land of villages Nangal Nikku, Hambewal and Dubheta the land acquired from these small villages in 1948 when the construction of Bhakra Dam was planned on the Satluj River. The town is divided into three parts: Nangal, Nangal Township and Naya Nangal.
Geography
Nangal is situated on the foothills of Shivalik hills and spread over both sides of river Sutlej which forms a lake behind the Nangal dam.It is a flourishing township at the foot of the Shiwalik Hills, a chain of the Himalayas. Every year, the mighty multi-purpose Bhakra Project which includes, apart from the Bhakra Dam, the Nangal Dam, the Nangal Hydel Channel, Ganguwal power houses and Kotla power houses surrounded with the natural beauty attracts a vast number of tourists from all parts of India and abroad as well. There are several markets in it, namely Jawahar Market, Main Market, Adda Market, GTB Market & Pahari Market. The residential areas of the city are organized into a block system.

Bhakra Dam
Bhakra Dam is a concrete gravity dam across the Satluj River in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh in northern India.
The dam, located at a gorge near the (now submerged) upstream Bhakra village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh of 226 m. India's tallest dam is "tehri dam "of 265 m. The length of the dam (measured from the road above it) is 518.25 m and the width is 9.1 m. Its reservoir known as "Gobind Sagar" stores up to 9.34 billion cubic metres of water. The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam is spread over an area of 168.35 km2. In terms of quantity of water, it is the third largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m and second Nagarjunasagar Dam.
Described as "New Temple of Resurgent India" by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, the dam attracts tourists from all over India. Bhakra dam is 15 km from Nangal city and 20 km from Naina Devi town.
Nangal dam is another dam downstream of Bhakra dam. Sometimes both the dams together are called Bhakra-Nangal dam though they are two separate dams.

भाखड़ा नंगल बांध भारत की सबसे बड़ी बहुउद्देशीय नदी घाटी परियोजना है, जिसका मुख्य उद्देश्य सिंचाई और बिज़ली उत्पादन है। इस बांध से जहां 1325 मेगावाट बिज़ली का उत्पादन होता है तो वही पंजाब, हरियाणा और राजस्थान के 40 हज़ार वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैले खेतों को सिंचाई भी की जाती है।

Bhakra Nangal dam is the world's highest straight gravity dam, constructed across the River Satluj. This dam is located at a distance of about 116 kms from Chandigarh.
Bhakra Nangal Dam is a concrete gravity-arch dam across the Sutluj River near the border between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The dam was part of the larger multipurpose Bhakra Nangal Project whose aims were to prevent floods in the Sutlej-Beas river valley, to provide irrigation to adjoining states and to provide hydro-electricity.
Bhakra Nangal project is committed for nation’s development through eco-friendly generation of electric power from water known as hydroelectricity. It has an installed capacity to generate 1478.72 MW of electric power.
The reservoir of Bhakra Nangal Dam is known as the Gobind Sagar stores up to 9.34 billion cubic metres of water enough to drain the whole of Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam is spread over an area of 168.35 km2. In terms of storage of water, it withholds the second largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m.
The dam was constructed with an aim to provide irrigation to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Another reason behind the construction of the dam was to prevent damage due to monsoon floods. The power generated at Bhakra Power houses is distributed among partner states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat
The construction work of Bhakra Nangal Dam began in 1948 and got completed in 1963.
Features of Bhakra Nangal Dam includes :
1) 4 spillway radial gates with each gate is weighing 102 tons and having dimensions of 50’x 47.5’.
2) The spillway crest level is around 1645 ft. and the gate sill level is around 1642 ft.
3) The Bhakra dam has maximum opening of 9.8 M with a total discharge of 1,97,300 cusecs.

Bhakra Nangal dam is the world's highest straight gravity dam, constructed across the River Satluj. This dam is located at a distance of about 116 kms from Chandigarh. Bhakra Nangal Dam is a concrete gravity-arch dam across the Sutluj River near the border between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The dam was part of the larger multipurpose Bhakra Nangal Project whose aims were to prevent floods in the Sutlej-Beas river valley, to provide irrigation to adjoining states and to provide hydro-electricity. The dam was part of the larger multipurpose Bhakra Nangal Project whose aims were to prevent floods in the Sutlej-Beas river valley, to provide irrigation to adjoining states and to provide hydro-electricity.
Bhakra Nangal project is committed for nation’s development through eco-friendly generation of electric power from water known as hydroelectricity. It has an installed capacity to generate 1478.72 MW of electric power.
The reservoir of Bhakra Nangal Dam is known as the Gobind Sagar stores up to 9.34 billion cubic metres of water enough to drain the whole of Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam is spread over an area of 168.35 km2. In terms of storage of water, it withholds the second largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m.
The dam was constructed with an aim to provide irrigation to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Another reason behind the construction of the dam was to prevent damage due to monsoon floods. The power generated at Bhakra Power houses is distributed among partner states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat
The construction work of Bhakra Nangal Dam began in 1948 and got completed in 1963.
Features of Bhakra Nangal Dam includes :
1) 4 spillway radial gates with each gate is weighing 102 tons and having dimensions of 50’x 47.5’.
2) The spillway crest level is around 1645 ft. and the gate sill level is around 1642 ft.
3) The Bhakra dam has maximum opening of 9.8 M with a total discharge of 1,97,300 cusecs.
