The Wyndham Area of Victoria, Australia is located just between the capital city of Melbourne and the city of Geelong in Western Australia. When it was first incorporated as the Wyndham District in 1862, and for many years afterward, it was largely a rural area. However, over the years, the suburbs within have seen significant development, and now have a total population of roughly 190,000 residents.
Even with expansion, this area remains quite rural in character. The suburb of Wyndham, the oldest suburb in the Kimberly region, boasts a population of approximately 700 people. After the gold rushes of the late 1800s ended, Wyndham and many other nearby suburbs largely only had pastoral uses.
Even though the climate and geography of the Wyndham area, which is very dry and includes many mudflats, is largely inhospitable, there have been many new housing developments in this region throughout the last decade.
