The suburb of Belmont is situated on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie and part of the City of Lake Macquarie. It is situated on a sandy peninsula in Hunter Region of New South Wales, approximately 20 kilometers from Newcastle's central business district.
Sandy inlets, secluded bays and protected foreshores support such pursuits as swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing. The town's relaxed lifestyle compliments its beaches and placid Lake Macquarie.
Home to a wide selection of shops and restaurants, Belmont and the surrounding area also include four primary schools and two secondary schools. There is also a local hospital.
Once a significant coal town, many collieries sought coal from the coal seams which were plentiful in the area. The smaller collieries closed due to industry slump of the 1960s and 70s with the larger collieries closing later.
Notable local people include a number of players for the local National Rugby League team, the Newcastle Nights, such as Daniel Abraham. The British Conservative Party politician, Craig Whittaker, was educated at Belmont High School.
