The Colour of Pomegranates - Juno Reactor Score

Commissioned by the Bialystok Film Festival in Poland, Ben Watkins AKA Juno Reactor performed this live on the 29th September 2013. In 1997 Juno Reactor Licensed The Colour of Pomegranates from the Arminian Ministry of Culture to cut a video to the track "God is God" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8LY2VgiikE. The "God is God" Video has been uploaded many times and taken down in equal measure, with millions of hits, it has become a way in for many new people into the world of Sergei Parajanov, an Arminian taxi driver told Ben in LA that "he was a great Director, but an even greater man". If you are new to Sergei Parajanov and his films, welcome to an amazing world of true cinema and artistry, I hope you also you find this score compliments the film. " --- Andrei Tarkovsky Sergei Parajanov was born in 1924, in Tbilisi, Georgia, USSR, to an ethnic Armenian family. He studied at the famous film school, VGIK, in Moscow. Parajanov came to international fame in 1964 after his masterpiece, Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors, was made. In December, 1973, Parajanov was arrested by the USSR government and was sent to a labour camp. A group of film makers, writers and artists petitioned for his release, among them were Yves Saint Laurent, Françoise Sagan, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Mikhail Vartanov. He was released 4 years later but kept away from film making until 1984. Parajanov died of cancer in Yerevan, Armenia, on July 20, 1990, aged 66 and the world of cinema lost a magician. In this videoclip Mostafa Heravi used and adjusted images of the beautiful film The Color of Pomegranates by Sergei Parajanov (Soviet Union, 1968). Mostafa was inspired by this film and the fact that the song " ay Yarom Bia " ( Ayy Yorum Biyo ) originally comes from the Tajikistan (Badakhshan) singer Muboraksho . Heravis intention was to create an artistic videoclip that merges the content of the song and film. This videoclip has no commercial purposes whatsoever.

Sergei Parajanov (Armenian: Սարգիս Հովսեփի Փարաջանյան, Sargis or Sarkis Hofsepi Paradzhanian; Georgian: სერგეი (სერგო) ფარაჯანოვი, Sergei (Sergo) Paradzhanov; Russian: Серге́й Ио́сифович Параджа́нов, Sergei Yosifovich Paradzhanov; Ukrainian: Сергій Йосипович Параджанов, Serhii Yosypovych Paradzhanov; also spelled Paradzhanov or Paradjanov January 9, 1924 — July 20, 1990) was a Soviet Armenian film director and artist, who significantly contributed to Ukrainian, Armenian and Georgian cinema.

He invented his own cinematic style, which was totally out of step with the guiding principles of socialist realism (the only sanctioned art style in the USSR). This, combined with his controversial lifestyle and behaviour, led Soviet cinema authorities to repeatedly persecute and imprison him and suppress his films.

Although he started professional film-making in 1954, Parajanov later disowned all of his pre-1964 works as "garbage". After directing Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (renamed Wild Horses of Fire for most foreign distributions) Parajanov had become something of an international celebrity and simultaneously a target of attacks from the system. Nearly all of his film projects and plans from 1965–1973 were banned, scrapped or closed by the Soviet film administration, both local (in Kiev and Yerevan) and federal (infamous Goskino), almost without discussion until he was finally arrested in late 1973 on trumped-up charges of rape, homosexuality and bribery. Parajanov was imprisoned until 1977, despite a plethora of pleas for pardon from various esteemed artists.

Mostafa was inspired by this film and the fact that the song " ay Yarom Bia " ( Ayy Yorum Biyo ) originally comes from the Tajikistan (Badakhshan) singer Muboraksho . Heravis intention was to create an artistic videoclip that merges the content of the song and film. This videoclip has no commercial purposes whatsoever.

The Color of Pomegranates, part 2
One of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century, Sergei Parajanov's "Color of the Pomegranate," a biography of the Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova (King of Song) reveals the poet's life more through his poetry than a conventional narration of important events in Sayat Nova's life. We see the poet grow up, fall in love, enter a monastery and die, but these incidents are depicted in the context of what are images from Sergei Parajanov's imagination and Sayat Nova's poems, poems that are seen and rarely heard. Sofiko Chiaureli plays 6 roles, both male and female, and Sergei Parajanov writes, directs, edits, choreographs, works on costumes, design and decor and virtually every aspect of this revolutionary work void of any dialog or camera movement.

The Color of Pomegranates (Armenian: Նռան գույնը) is a 1969 Soviet film written and directed by Sergei Parajanov. It made the Top 10 list in Cahiers du cinéma in 1982 and Top 100 in Time Out The Color of Pomegranates is a biography of the Armenian ashug Sayat-Nova (King of Song) that attempts to reveal the poet's life visually and poetically rather than literally. Event: Encounters with Art Venue: Special Events Auditorium, Star Landing Date: December 13, 2014 Speakers: Ruben Angaladian, writer, philosopher and art collector; Zaven Sargsyan, Director of The Sergei Parajanov Museum The last event of the Encounters with Art series in 2014 at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts featured world renowned Armenian film director Sergei Parajanov; a controversial and revolutionary figure in the Soviet film-making, who became an international celebrity after directing Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964). The event was dedicated to Parajanov’s 90th Anniversary of birth and comprised of two parts. In the beginning of the event, following Armen Yesayants' opening speech, a writer, culturologist and philosopher Ruben Angaladian was welcomed to the stage to present a small talk-lecture on Parajanov’s Artistic Experience as National Phenomenon. In his lecture Mr. Angaladian posed a question of who Parajanov was for us, how we evaluated and approached him. Mr. Angaladian also talked about the place Parajanov occupied in world cultural history. The event then continued with the screening of Ron Holloway’s 1994 film–interview Parajanov: A Requiem. The film provided to CCA by the Director of The Sergei Parajanov Museum Zaven Sargsyan happened to be the last interview with the genius shot in a hotel room in Munich, Germany where Parajanov talked about his life path, approaches, prison period and works. Zaven Sargsyan presented the film in short to the CCA audience prior to its screening.

It made the Top 10 list in Cahiers du cinéma in 1982 and Top 100 in Time Out The Color of Pomegranates is a biography of the Armenian ashug Sayat-Nova (King of Song) that attempts to reveal the poet's life visually and poetically rather than literally. The film is presented in a form of static tableaux and depicts the poet's coming of age, discovery of the female form, falling in love, entering a monastery and dying, all framed through both Sergei Parajanov's imagination and Sayat Nova's poems. Actress Sofiko Chiaureli notably plays six roles in the film, both male and female. According to Frank Williams, Paradjanov's film celebrates the survival of Armenian culture in the teeth of oppression and persecution: "There are specific images that are highly charged — blood-red juice spilling from a cut pomegranate into a cloth and forming a stain in the shape of the boundaries of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia; dyers lifting hanks of wool out of vats in the colours of the national flag, and so on" - wikipedia Director Sergei Paradjanov made a practice of making highly idiosyncratic films based on the folklore of regions in the former Soviet Union. Chapter 1 explores the birth of cinema in Armenia in 1899 with a screening in Yerevan and provides the setting for the following survey. Chapter 2 is dedicated to the founder of the Armenian cinema, Hamo Beknazaryan, whose work represents an entire era not only of Armenian but also in Soviet cinema, since his name stands alongside those of Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Dovzhenko, and other great filmmakers. Chapter 3 concerns other works created during the silent period in Armenia. Chapter 4 discusses the processes of Armenian cinema in the Stalin era, broadly covering the period from 1930 to 1959. New filmmakers appeared on the stage during those years. The role of the short film genre is mentioned, as well as films that were shelved by Soviet censorship. In 1997 Juno Reactor Licensed The Colour of Pomegranates from the Arminian Ministry of Culture to cut a video to the track "God is God" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8LY2VgiikE. The "God is God" Video has been uploaded many times and taken down in equal measure, with millions of hits, it has become a way in for many new people into the world of Sergei Parajanov, an Arminian taxi driver told Ben in LA that "he was a great Director, but an even greater man". His way of thinking, his paradoxical poetical...ability to love the beauty and ability to be absolutely free within his own vision. " --- Andrei Tarkovsky Sergei Parajanov was born in 1924, in Tbilisi, Georgia, USSR, to an ethnic Armenian family. He studied at the famous film school, VGIK, in Moscow. Parajanov came to international fame in 1964 after his masterpiece, Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors, was made. In December, 1973, Parajanov was arrested by the USSR government and was sent to a labour camp. A group of film makers, writers and artists petitioned for his release, among them were Yves Saint Laurent, Françoise Sagan, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Mikhail Vartanov. He was released 4 years later but kept away from film making until 1984. Parajanov died of cancer in Yerevan, Armenia, on July 20, 1990, aged 66 and the world of cinema lost a magician. In this videoclip Mostafa Heravi used and adjusted images of the beautiful film The Color of Pomegranates by Sergei Parajanov (Soviet Union, 1968). Mostafa was inspired by this film and the fact that the song " ay Yarom Bia " ( Ayy Yorum Biyo ) originally comes from the Tajikistan (Badakhshan) singer Muboraksho . Event: Encounters with Art Venue: Special Events Auditorium, Star Landing Date: December 13, 2014 Speakers: Ruben Angaladian, writer, philosopher and art collector; Zaven Sargsyan, Director of The Sergei Parajanov Museum The last event of the Encounters with Art series in 2014 at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts featured world renowned Armenian film director Sergei Parajanov; a controversial and revolutionary figure in the Soviet film-making, who became an international celebrity after directing Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964). The event was dedicated to Parajanov’s 90th Anniversary of birth and comprised of two parts. In the beginning of the event, following Armen Yesayants' opening speech, a writer, culturologist and philosopher Ruben Angaladian was welcomed to the stage to present a small talk-lecture on Parajanov’s Artistic Experience as National Phenomenon. In his lecture Mr. Angaladian posed a question of who Parajanov was for us, how we evaluated and approached him. Mr. Angaladian also talked about the place Parajanov occupied in world cultural history. The event then continued with the screening of Ron Holloway’s 1994 film–interview Parajanov: A Requiem. The film provided to CCA by the Director of The Sergei Parajanov Museum Zaven Sargsyan happened to be the last interview with the genius shot in a hotel room in Munich, Germany where Parajanov talked about his life path, approaches, prison period and works. Zaven Sargsyan presented the film in short to the CCA audience prior to its screening.

The Color of Pomegranates (Armenian: Նռան գույնը) is a 1969 Soviet film written and directed by Sergei Parajanov. It made the Top 10 list in Cahiers du cinéma in 1982 and Top 100 in Time Out The Color of Pomegranates is a biography of the Armenian ashug Sayat-Nova (King of Song) that attempts to reveal the poet's life visually and poetically rather than literally. The film is presented in a form of static tableaux and depicts the poet's coming of age, discovery of the female form, falling in love, entering a monastery and dying, all framed through both Sergei Parajanov's imagination and Sayat Nova's poems. Actress Sofiko Chiaureli notably plays six roles in the film, both male and female. According to Frank Williams, Paradjanov's film celebrates the survival of Armenian culture in the teeth of oppression and persecution: "There are specific images that are highly charged — blood-red juice spilling from a cut pomegranate into a cloth and forming a stain in the shape of the boundaries of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia; dyers lifting hanks of wool out of vats in the colours of the national flag, and so on" - wikipedia Director Sergei Paradjanov made a practice of making highly idiosyncratic films based on the folklore of regions in the former Soviet Union. In 1969 he made this film, based in part on the life of the 18th-century Armenian poet-monk, Sayat Nova. Seriously out of favor with Soviet authorities (he was imprisoned in 1974 for his homosexuality, among other things), this film was not seen in the international arena until 1977. Then, The Color of Pomegranates was widely acclaimed for its poetic and non-narrative blending of historical and biographical Armenian imagery. Quick Overview This book is the first English language study of Armenian cinema. It is divided into twelve chapters, followed by an appendix on animation. Chapter 1 explores the birth of cinema in Armenia in 1899 with a screening in Yerevan and provides the setting for the following survey. Chapter 2 is dedicated to the founder of the Armenian cinema, Hamo Beknazaryan, whose work represents an entire era not only of Armenian but also in Soviet cinema, since his name stands alongside those of Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Dovzhenko, and other great filmmakers. Chapter 3 concerns other works created during the silent period in Armenia. Chapter 4 discusses the processes of Armenian cinema in the Stalin era, broadly covering the period from 1930 to 1959. New filmmakers appeared on the stage during those years. The role of the short film genre is mentioned, as well as films that were shelved by Soviet censorship. Chapter 5 analyzes the most significant films for the subsequent rise of Armenian cinema as well as musical films. Chapters 6 and 7 are devoted to prominent filmakers, Sergei Parajanov and Artavazd Peleshyan, subjecting their works to theoretical and morphological analyses.
