Russian Geography 21 - Southern Federal District

With a population of nearly 14 million, the Southern Federal District (or Ю́жный федера́льный о́круг in Russian) is comprised of the following six federal subjects: Krasnodar Krai (Краснода́рский край) Republic of Adygea (Респу́блика Адыге́я) Rostov Oblast (Росто́вская о́бласть) Republic of Kalmykia (Респу́блика Калмы́кия) Volgograd Oblast (Волгогра́дская о́бласть) Astrakhan Oblast (Астраха́нская о́бласть) A famous mountain peak located in the Southern Federal District is Mount Fischt. Although the elevation of the peak is only 9,406 feet, it is among the most notable peaks in this region. While hiking up this mountain one must cross the Fischt Glacier (or ледник фишт in Russian) just before reaching the top of the peak. Although on a good day the view from the peak is spectacular, weather conditions often block the view. The Fischt Olympic Stadium (or Олимпийский стадион «Фишт» in Russian) was named after Mount Fischt. Located in the city of Sochi (Сочи), the stadium served as the location for both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Sochi, of course, is situated in Krasnodar Krai, in case there was any doubt. So, now, let’s take a look at our focus words: наткнуться- stumble, come on, strike ледник - glacier чуть - hardly, barely, almost, a little назвать - to call, to name честь - honor, regard, respect достопримечательность - landmark, place of interest A couple sentences which include these focus words are as follows: Чуть ниже вершины вы наткнётесь на ледник . (You will encounter a glacier just below the summit.) Стадион назвали в честь достопримечательности. (The stadium was named after the landmark.) And now for a few words of wisdom for you to ponder: Важно понимать, что вещи не всегда такие, какими они кажутся на первый взгляд. (It’s important to realize that things are not always as they at first appear.) Никогда не стоит недооценивать силу дебилов в толпе. (Никогда нельзя недооценивать силу глупых людей, объединённых в большие группы.) (Никогда нельзя недооценивать силу глупых людей, собравшихся в большие группы. ) (Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.) Continuing on with our pearls of wisdom we have... (Можно ли иметь слишком много хороших вещей?) Реально ли иметь слишком много хорошего? (Is it possible to have too much of a good thing?) Additionally... Хорошего понемножку. Хорошего помаленьку. both mean... It is too much of a good thing. And finally we have… Мудрость это способность распутать кажущиеся противоречия. (Мудрость это способность улаживать сомнительные противоречия.) (Мудрость это умение сглаживать возможные разногласия.) (Wisdom is the ability to make sense of apparent contradictions.)
