The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955--1968) refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. This article covers the phase of the movement between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The emergence of the Black Power Movement, which lasted roughly from 1966 to 1975, enlarged the aims of the Civil Rights Movement to include racial dignity, economic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by white Americans.
The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955--1956) in Alabama; "sit-ins" such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on "race, color, religion, or national origin" in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action.
Desegregation busing in the United States (also known as forced busing or simply busing) is the practice of assigning and transporting students to schools in such a manner as to redress prior racial segregation of schools, or to overcome the effects of residential segregation on local school demographics.

Summary: private citizens brought an action under 42 U.S. Code § 1983 against a city and its police chief, alleging a violation of their right to videotape police actions. The district court found that plaintiffs had no constitutional right to videotape police actions in public.
Holding: a three-judge appellate panel disagreed with the trial court and found that the plaintiffs enjoyed a right, as private citizens, to videotape public police action. However, the court found that appellants failed to prove that the police conduct deprived them of a right, privilege or immunity secured by the Constitution or laws of the United States.
UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS
FOR THE ELEVENTH CIRCUIT
James Soloman Smith, Jr.,
Barbara Smith,
Plaintiffs-Appellants,
v.
City of Cumming,
a Municipal Corporation,
Earl A.Singletary, et al.,
Defendants-Appellees.
No. 99-8199
212 F.3d 1332 (Published)
2000 U.S. App. Lexis 11970
May 31, 2000, Decided
May 31, 2000, Filed
Appeal from the U. S. District Court for the No. Dist. of Georgia, No. 97-01753-1-CV, Julie E. Carnes, Judge. Writ of Certiorari denied (Nov. 6, 2000) 531 U.S. 978. Before Birch and Barkett, Circuit Judges, and Alarcon*, Senior Circuit Judge. [*1332]
Barkett, Circuit Judge:
James and Barbara Smith filed suit against the City of Cumming, Georgia (the “City”), and its police chief, Earl Singletary, pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1983, alleging that the City police had harassed the Smiths, including a claim that Mr. Smith had been prevented from videotaping police actions in violation of Smith’s First Amendment rights. They appeal from summary judgment granted to the City and Singletary and from the denial of the Smiths’ motion to amend their complaint so as to name another City police chief, Ralph “Buck” Jones, n1 as a defendant in the [*1333] place of a defendant originally identified as “John Doe.” We affirm.
As to the First Amendment claim under Section 1983, we agree with the Smiths that they had a First Amendment right, subject to reasonable time, manner and place restrictions, to photograph or videotape police conduct. The First Amendment protects the right to gather information about what public officials do on public property, and specifically, a right to record matters of public interest. See Blackston v. Alabama, 30 F.3d 117, 120 (11th Cir.1994) (finding that plaintiffs’ interest in filming public meetings is protected by the First Amendment); Fordyce v. City of Seattle, 55 F.3d 436, 439 (9th Cir.1995) (recognizing a “First Amendment right to film matters of public interest”); Iacobucci v. Boulter, 1997 U.S. Dist. Lexis 7010, No. CIV.A. 94-10531 (D.Mass, Mar. 26, 1997) (unpublished opinion) (finding that an independent reporter has a protected right under the First Amendment and state law to videotape public meetings); see also United States v. Hastings, 695 F.2d 1278, 1281 (11th Cir.1983) (finding that the press generally has no right to information superior to that of the general public) (citing Nixon v. Warner Communications, Inc., 435 U.S. 589, 609, 98 S. Ct. 1306, 55 L. Ed. 2d 570 (1978)); Lambert v. Polk County, 723 F. Supp. 128, 133 (S.D. Iowa 1989) (“It is not just news organizations ... who have First Amendment rights to make and display videotapes of events....”); Thompson v. City of Clio, 765 F. Supp. 1066, 1070-71 (M.D.Ala.1991) (finding that city council’s ban on member’s attempt to record proceedings regulated conduct protected by the First Amendment ); cf. Williamson v. Mills, 65 F.3d 155 (11th Cir.1995) (reversing district court’s grant of qualified immunity to a law enforcement officer who seized the film of and arrested a participant in a demonstration for photographing undercover officers). Thus, the district court erred in concluding that there was no First Amendment right.
Nonetheless, under Section 1983, the Smiths must prove that the conduct complained of deprived them of “a right, privilege or immunity secured by the constitution or laws of the United States.” Nail v. Community Action Agency of Calhoun County, 805 F.2d 1500, 1501 (11th Cir.1986). Although the Smiths have a right to videotape police activities, they have not shown that the Defendants’ actions violated that right. We find no merit in the remaining arguments presented in this appeal.
Affirmed.

* Honorable Arthur L. Alarcon, Senior U.S. Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit, sitting by designation.

There is a chronic ongoing struggle to preserve individual liberty against those who claim safety and security as an alibi to erode our civil rights.
On 9/11/2001 a war on terror was declared. Since then Trillions of dollars have been spent. Tens of thousands of our brave men and women have been killed or wounded and thousands more suffer from mental illness like PTSD.
For those of us paying attention, we know another war was also declared on 9/11/2001. The war on individual liberty, and it is being fought right here on the streets of America. While many people disagree on the truthfulness of the official 911 story, most people agree that the fear created by those attacks has been exploited and used as an alibi to erode our constitutionally protected individual rights. We are told ad nauseam that we must sacrifice liberty for security, and that our military personnel are fighting and dying to protect our freedom in countries thousands of miles away. Yet, at home American citizens are being harassed, arrested and treated like terrorist for simply exercising our civil liberties. It is easy to claim your rights when there is no danger in doing so. Our rights only truly count when people are willing to assert those rights under threat and under duress. We must not allow our rights to be eroded by ISIS or by our own government. Will our military personnel and law enforcement officers fight for our freedom and respect our rights here on American soil?

In the United States, a group of Confederate flag supporters have held a rally in Stone Mountain Park, near Atlanta.
The protesters were angry over plans to place the monument of African-American Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King at the top of Stone Mountain alongside a Confederate memorial. The placement of the monument has been delayed due to stirred debates on the issue. A series of high-profile racial incidents by so-called white supremacists have led to nationwide efforts to get the flag banned or at least removed from public property. Back in June, nine black worshipers were shot dead by a white gunman in Charleston. Before the shooting, the man had been photographed with the Confederate flag, which is considered by many as a symbol of racism in South Carolina.

I've already lost a so called friend over this. I'm better off with out the fickle. Far as I'm concerned.....this is just small change compared to what is coming. The apocalypse is said to test a person's metal. Gun to the head....then repeat your faith if you dare. Its already happening.
So sit in front of your tv sets. Tell yourself that you would fight the good fight if it ever came your way. But we all know......yellow bitch asses will wilt and fold at the first sign of authority.

White House Backs Changing Civil Rights Act to Ban LGBT Discrimination

Answering a question posed by a reporter at a press briefing on November 10, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest confirmed that “the administration strongly supports the Equality Act.” The reporter had described the legislation as “a federal anti-discrimination bill against anti-LGBT discrimination known as the Equality Act.”
Earnest elaborated further:
It is now clear that the administration strongly supports the Equality Act. That bill is historic legislation that would advance the cause of equality for millions of Americans. And we certainly are pleased with the many legislators in Congress that have stepped forward to try to advance a bill that would deliver comprehensive equal rights for LGBT Americans. And we look forward to working with Congress to ensure that the legislative process produces a result that balances both the bedrock principles of civil rights, like those I’ve just described, with the religious liberty that we hold dear in this country.
Earnest also stated that “the Equality Act would have an impact on a substantial number of government policies” and that “the administration does look forward to working with Congress to try to advance this legislation consistent with the values that we have articulated about the importance of equal rights and making sure that people can’t be discriminated against because of who they love, while at the same time making sure that we can protect religious liberty at the same time.”
Setting aside the ongoing debates abut same-sex “marriage” for a moment, it is important to note that the quest for “equal rights’ for homosexuals has now escalated to include also “transgendered” individuals — the “T” in LGBT. Though the definition of “transgender” may vary, it generally means an individual who views his "gender" as being different from his sexual orientation — for instance, a biological male who identifies as a female.
Whichever one of the letters in the LGBT acronym (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) a person chooses to identify with, however, his biological gender is an integral part of his DNA and can never be changed, with all males having an X and a Y chromosome and all females having two X chromosomes. Nothing can change this — not even so-called sex-change operations.
Therefore, Ernest’s statement that “people can’t be discriminated against because of who they love,” misses the point entirely. No one has ever presumed to discriminate against another person because of whom they love, although some people may choose to discriminate whether they want to participate in a person’s behavior that violates their religious principles. Earnest asserted that the Equality Act “balances both the bedrock principles of civil rights, like those I’ve just described, with the religious liberty that we hold dear in this country.”
Many people doubt that religious liberty will be preserved if social engineering legislation such as the Equality Act is passed, however.
