Syria's top military officials in charge of troops in Lebanon paid a farewell visit to Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud at his palace in Beirut on Tuesday.
Lahoud met Syria's chief of military intelligence in Lebanon, Major General Rustom Ghazaleh - a man once touted in Lebanese newspapers as the de facto ruler of the country - and Major General Fayez al-Haffar, the commander of Syrian forces in Lebanon.
The officials later met the prime minister-designate of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, on the day he announced he had formed a Cabinet, ending seven weeks of delay in trying to set up a government and as the number of Syria's troops in Lebanon dwindled to 1,000 - all of them expected to leave within a week.
Mikati was appointed to form a government on Friday. The first legislator to be asked to form a Cabinet, outgoing Prime Minister Omar Karami, gave up last week.
A moderate and a supporter of Syria, Mikati said that apart from the elections, his government's priorities would be to bolster national unity, strengthen relations with Syria and protect the resistance. He was referring to UN Security Council demands that Lebanon disarm the militant Hezbollah group.
In a show of support for Hezbollah, the Syrian officials later met the group's secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rustom Ghazaleh said: "Syria was and will always support the resistance. While leaving Lebanon today we assure you that we are over the border but Lebanon is still in our heart and the resistance is in our hearts."
The completion of the troop withdrawal will end Syria's 29-year military presence - the key to its domination of Lebanon. The anti-Syrian opposition is hoping to win the parliamentary elections and deal a further blow to Damascus' political influence in the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called the situation in Syria more "complicated by the day" and said although Israel would stay out of the conflict, the country could not rely solely on international forces for its safety.
Netanyahu spoke during a weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
The Israeli prime minister said he had discussed Syria with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin on Friday offered to send Russian troops to the Golan Heights to replace the Austrians who are withdrawing from the United Nations peacekeeping force that monitors the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces.
Netanyahu said the withdrawal "highlights the fact that Israel cannot put its safety in the hands of the international forces".
"They can be a part of arrangements, but they cannot be the basis of Israel's security," he told lawmakers.
Putin's offer was quickly turned down, however, by Josephine Guerrero, spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping department.
Austria announced Thursday that it is withdrawing 377 UN peacekeepers from the contested Golan Heights after Syrian rebels briefly overran a crossing point near the border with Israel.
It was later recaptured by government troops, but the fighting prompted Austria to announce it was withdrawing its contingent from the force that patrols the Israeli-occupied area.
"We have no one to rely on but our soldiers, the soldiers of the Israeli army and our security arms," said Yuval Steinitz, Israel's Minister for International Relations and Strategic Affairs.
"We cannot leave the security of Israel to foreign forces even at times of peace," he added, speaking at the cabinet meeting on Sunday.
The United Nations is urgently looking for troops to replace the Austrians, who made up a sizeable portion of the 911-member peacekeeping force.
The Philippines and India also contribute troops.
The Syrian conflict started with largely peaceful protests against Assad's regime in March 2011, but later degenerated into a bloody civil war that has killed more than 80-thousand people, according to United Nations officials.

The US should limit any dialogue with Iran and be prepared to take a stronger position if such engagement leads to further deadlock, the Israeli defence minister told reporters on Sunday.
"We are in no position to tell the United States whether to open engagement or dialogue with Iranians or not," Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said.
But he added that Israel insists that such an engagement should be "short, limited in time, being run under certain kind of set of soft sanctions, with the readiness to take much more powerful sanctions".
Israelis have expressed concern over calls by US President Barack Obama for outreach to Iran, which Israel considers its top nemesis.
Israel's new foreign minister said Iran was the main obstacle to peace in the Middle East in an interview published on Friday.
Avigdor Lieberman told The Jerusalem Post that it would be impossible to resolve any problem in the region without dealing with Iran's nuclear programme and its support for militant groups opposed to Israel, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
The comments come as differences have appeared between the hard-line government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Obama administration over the peace process.
Obama has said the US seeks a "two-state" solution, with the creation of a Palestinian state next to Israel, while Netanyahu has not publicly embraced the principle.
Barak also told reporters that negotiations with Syria should remain on the government agenda.
"An agreement with Syria is (of) highly important interest to the state of Israel assuming of course that our our vital interests are met within this agreement," he said.
Netanyahu is in the process of formulating his government's foreign policy.
But he and Lieberman both have said they would not be willing to cede the Golan Heights, territory captured by Israel in 1967 which Syria wants returned.
Syria recently said it would be willing to resume indirect peace talks with the new Israeli government, after earlier efforts broke off last year when Israel called early elections, as long as they focused on a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights.
Israel has held several rounds of talks with the Syrians, most recently indirect negotiations mediated by Turkey last year.
Lieberman told the Post that the Israeli government was currently preparing its policy platform and that Netanyahu will present it when he meets Obama at the White House in mid-May.

Sky's Sophy Ridge said only four members at the meeting explicitly backed his stance, while 15 spoke out against his position.
And the letter has angered some who see it as an attempt to pre-empt Monday's shadow cabinet meeting while appealing over the head of MPs to the grass roots members who swept Mr Corbyn to the leadership.
Shadow international development secretary Diane Abbott insisted the shadow cabinet was not entitled to vote down the leader and said she was confident they would come to the "right decision".
"Jeremy appoints the shadow cabinet - not the other way round. You cannot have a shadow cabinet voting down the leader of the Labour Party who has just been elected with the biggest mandate in history."
However, shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn said Mr Cameron had set out "compelling arguments" for Britain to join other nations in extending airstrikes against IS into Syria.

STORYLINE:
Israel''s prime minister attempted on Sunday to end a recent war of words with Syria, saying his country was open to peace talks with its longtime enemy.
Israeli and Syrian officials have traded threats over the past week, raising concerns of an escalation.
The two countries have officially been at war for more than 60 years.
"I hope that we are on the brink of renewing negotiations with the Palestinians, and we are open to renewing the process with the Syrians as well," Netanyahu told his Cabinet''s weekly meeting.
He said Israel desired peace agreements with all its neighbours.
Netanyahu''s comments came after an ominous exchange between officials in the two countries.
Syrian President Bashar Assad accused Israel of avoiding peace and his foreign minister threatened that Israeli cities would come under attack in a future war.
Israel''s foreign minister responded that Syria would be defeated and Assad and his family would lose power in any future conflict.
It has been a quarter-century since Israel and Syria fought directly, but Syria backs anti-Israel forces like the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah and the Palestinian Islamist organisation Hamas.
The central point of disagreement between the sides is the Golan Heights area, a strategic plateau which Israel captured in 1967 and later annexed.
Netanyahu said Israel would not accept preconditions to negotiations, indicating he would not agree in advance to a Golan withdrawal.
He also said any agreement would have to guarantee Israel''s security.
Indirect talks between Syria and Israel''s previous government ended unsuccessfully in late 2008.

The government has not approved of it and the publications were exaggerated without any proportion."

STORYLINE:
Following U.S. and Syrian outrage over an Israeli plan to expand Jewish settlement on the Golan Heights, Israel's Vice-Premier, Ehud Olmert, on Sunday denied that such a project had been approved by the government.
A ministerial committee last week approved the expansion plan for the Golan, a strategic plateau Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war
and later annexed. The plan is to attract an additional 900 families to live on the Golan, where about 18,000 Israelis currently reside.
The announcement, made by Agriculture Minister Yisrael Katz, came weeks after Syrian President Bashar Assad called for the resumption of peace talks with Israel. Katz said the settlements were meant to increase Israel's hold on the Golan.
Syria denounced the Israeli announcement, and the United States urged Israel to halt its settlement activities.
Since then, Israel has distanced itself from Katz's announcement, saying first that the decision wasn't connected to Assad's peace moves and later denying that any such plans had been approved.
Olmert told reporters on Sunday that Israel has, "no such programme". He also said the Cabinet had not approved the plans. It was unclear what aspects of the plan require Cabinet approval.
Israeli-Syrian peace talks broke down in 2000 without a peace deal, although the sides had agreed to most of the issues, including Israel handing over nearly all of the Golan Heights.

STORYLINE:
A Lebanese cabinet session broke up on Thursday after ministers from the anti-Syrian majority engaged in a heated argument with the pro-Syrian president before walking out, throwing the country into a political crisis and setting back efforts to end tensions that threaten stability.
The break-up of the Cabinet, the country's decision-making body, three minutes after the meeting opened came two days after a spat between President Emile Lahoud and his opponent, Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, at an Arab summit in Sudan.
Apart from paralysing government activity if the boycott of Lahoud continues, the development is certain to set back efforts at reconciling Lebanese factions.
Fourteen faction leaders, Christian and Muslim, pro- and anti-Syrian, have been holding regular "national dialogue" meetings to try to work out differences that threaten to destabilise the country.
The anti-Syrian majority regards Lahoud, whose term in office was extended under Syrian pressure in September 2004, as Syria's man in Lebanon.
He has refused to step down.
The argument on Thursday erupted as photographers and cameramen were allowed in for the usual photo opportunity whilst the ministers took their seats for the regular weekly session.
Video showed Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hamadeh, one of the senior anti-Syrian politicians, stand up to address the president, referring to the Arab summit in Sudan this week.
Lahoud, who was chairing the session, interrupted him to say he could not speak while members of the press were in the room.
"You have no right to speak before the cameramen," Lahoud said.
Hamadeh continued anyway, prompting the president to tell him, "Sit down. You have no right... Are you coming here to make a movie?"
The meeting broke up when ministers from the parliamentary majority, who make up two-thirds of the 24-member Cabinet, walked out.
After the meeting fell apart Lahoud spoke to journalists outside the governmental building in downtown Beirut, accusing the anti-Syrian majority of orchestrating the clash and the walkout in front of the cameras.
"It is shameful what happened today," Lahoud said. "This fictitious majority can do nothing."
Saniora urged calm.
He told reporters afterward, "let us calm down. We all should act in a wise manner in the interest of the country."
Relations between Lebanon and Syria plummeted following the assassination last year of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, which many Lebanese blame on Syria.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday accused Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of complicity in the bloodshed in Syria.
Speaking at the cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Netanyahu accused Syria's powerful, anti-Israel allies of helping the regime of President Basher Assad to brutally suppress the 15-month-old rebellion.
"This is a massacre executed not by the Syrian government alone, they are assisted by Iran and Hezbollah. And the world should realise this a focused axis of evil - Iran, Syria and Hezbollah," Netanyahu said.
Israel is anxiously watching developments in the neighbouring country, fearing widening instability in the region.
With dozens killed in ferocious weekend battles, a string of top Israeli officials sounded alarms over the deteriorating situation in Syria and called for international intervention.
After keeping quiet early in the uprising, Israeli leaders have grown increasingly outspoken in their calls for Assad to step aside.
Israeli officials, however, adamantly reject suggestions that they are assisting Syrian rebels.
Vice Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz warned that Iran and Hezbollah could take the conflict beyond Syria's borders, and described the killing of Syrian civilians as "genocide."
Thousands have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March last year.
The UN's latest estimate is 9,000 dead, but that is from April 2012 and the world body has been unable to update it since.
Syrian activists put the toll at more than 13,000.

Travel video about destination Syria.
Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape.
Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures.
The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC.
Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins.
Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century.
Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.

US Secretary of State John Kerry sharply criticised Syria's presidential vote this week as "a great big zero," and said it could not be considered fair when "millions of your people don't even have the ability to vote."
Kerry comments in Beirut came a day after Syrians in government-controlled areas voted in a presidential poll and all but guaranteed to hand President Bashar Assad another seven-year term.
Voting did not take place in rebel-held areas, and the opposition has denounced the vote as a farce.
Kerry also announced another 290 million dollars aid from the American government to cope with the Syrian refugee crisis that has spilled over into Lebanon and other neighbouring states.
Kerry said the United States would continue to support Lebanon, including its armed forces, but also urged a speedy resolution to the political stalemate that has left Lebanon without a president.
Michel Suleiman's six-year term as president ended last month, but Lebanese politicians have failed to agree on a successor despite five parliament sessions over several weeks.
Commenting on the new Palestinian unity government, backed by Hamas, Kerry said the United States would work with it "as appropriate", and would continue to monitor the Palestinian cabinet to make sure "that it doesn't cross the line."

A Syrian cabinet minister warned on Monday that the dramatic events in neighbouring Iraq threaten to implode the entire Middle East and undermine security in Europe and beyond.
Speaking to The Associated Press in Damascus, Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi called on the international community to unite in its efforts to "confront terrorism".
He also accused Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of supporting "armed terrorist groups" in Syria and and Iraq.
The Syrian government has long insisted that the rebels in Syria were foreign-inspired "terrorists" as opposed to democracy-seeking Syrians.
He said that militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIL, were transporting weapons and vehicles from Iraq to Syria, but did not elaborate.
The militants are carving out an ever-expanding fiefdom along the Iraqi-Syrian border.
In the past few days, they seized several strategically located towns along the Euphrates
River, including border crossings - advancing their efforts to etch out a large region straddling the two conflict-ridden countries.

The Syrian National Coalition, the main Western-backed opposition group, voted and approved a list of cabinet ministers presented by its interim prime minister, Ahmad Toumeh, in Istanbul on Tuesday.
The voting came on Monday as the group said it intends to join peace talks with the Syrian government, if conditions are met.
After voting for ministerial posts in Toumeh's interim government, members of the coalition celebrated hand-in-hand, some overwhelmed by emotion.
"This is a very historic day for Syria," Toumeh said after the results were announced.
"We have been waiting for 50 years. It has been a very long time coming," he said, adding he hoped him and his new ministers would be able to "arrive at the democratic and plural society" Syrians deserve.
After a separate vote, the SNC agreed to attend a proposed peace conference with President Bashar Assad's government.
The US and Russia are trying to convene the talks in Geneva by the end of this year.
But according to a coalition statement, the group says representatives would attend only if the Syrian government allowed the creation of humanitarian corridors to reach besieged areas and if it released detainees, especially women and children.
Excerpts of the statement were released by the office of Monzer Azbik, chief of staff to coalition chief Ahmad al-Jarba.
The opposition group's vote to attend the Geneva talks came on the second day of ongoing meetings in Istanbul.
The coalition statement made clear that the decision did not remove its demand that Assad step down in any transitional government.

STORYLINE:
Israel's minister for tourism said on Sunday that he hoped Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas would not become a "puppet" in the hands of Hamas.
Yitkhak Herzog made the comments ahead of the weekly Israeli cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
He blamed what he referred to as the "stubbornness and incapability" of exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal and Hamas in general for an unstable Palestinian regime.
His comments came following reports from Damascus on Sunday that a planned meeting between Abbas and Mashaal would not take place.
The news has dashed hopes of breakthrough talks that would have ended a year-long political deadlock and moved forward plans to form a national unity government between the militant Hamas - which controls the Palestinian parliament and cabinet - and Abbas' more moderate Fatah movement.
Palestinian infighting between Hamas and Fatah loyalists has so far killed at least 62 people.

However Syria continues to believe in talking, but of course never accepted conditions either to talk or to do anything, and the American administration knows this. Syria never accepts any conditions. Whatever they are saying about Syria not interfering in Lebanon or not allowing terrorists we all know that it is totally unfounded, has nothing to do with the role, the very constructive role that Syria is playing, before the war on Iraq and after the war in Iraq. The unity of Iraq, the sovereignty of Iraq, the independence of Iraq is something that is crucial to Syria, and the interests of the Iraqi people and the Syrian people are totally entangled. And the interests of the regions as well. And this is what Syria is careful to achieve through negotiation, through talks, through co-operation."

STORYLINE
A Syrian cabinet minister said on Tuesday that accusations by the US and British governments of Syrian interference in the Middle East were "totally unfounded."
Buthayna Shaaban made the comments in an interview with AP Television following comments made by the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair on Monday, about the de-stabilising influence of Iran and Syria in the region.
"Whatever they are saying about Syria not interfering in Lebanon or not allowing terrorists we all know that it is totally unfounded, has nothing to do with the role, the very constructive role that Syria is playing, before the war on Iraq and after the war in Iraq," she said
Shaaban also made it clear that in the eyes of the Syrian government, the future of Iraq was closely tied up with that of their own country.
"The unity of Iraq, the sovereignty of Iraq, the independence of Iraq is something that is crucial to Syria, and the interests of the Iraqi people and the Syrian people are totally entangled."
The comments come as the US and British administrations appear to be looking for a new strategy in Iraq and the wider Middle East.
Blair plans to speak privately via video link on Tuesday with a bipartisan Washington panel reviewing US strategy on the conflict.
The US commission, headed by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III and former Democratic Rep. Lee Hamilton, is considering options including whether to solicit Iran and Syria to help stop the fighting.

1. SOUNDBITE (English) Buthayna Shaaban, Syrian Cabinet Minister:
"Syria has always believed in dialogue and called for talks but it was the American administration and the British Prime Minister who took the policy of starting a war in Iraq, instead of addressing the Arab Israeli conflict.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday said that Israel approached recently resumed negotiations with Syria "seriously" with a "very detailed and strict preparation".
"There is and there will be a very detailed and strict preparation that will adjust our expectations from the negotiations to the current reality now...and to the security and political sensitivities that comes with the reality as we know it now," Olmert said during Sunday's cabinet meeting.
On Wednesday, Israel and Syria announced a resumption of peace talks after an eight-year break.
A day later, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said Damascus would have to stop supporting Hamas and Hezbollah and cut ties with Iran if any agreement were to be reached.
Syria rejected the Israeli demands, a Syrian state newspaper said on Saturday.
And Syrian ally Hamas, a sworn foe of the Jewish state, cast doubt on the Israeli government's ability to even deliver on a peace agreement due to the weakness of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
An investigation into Olmert over corruption allegations has raised doubts about his ability to conclude a peace deal with the Palestinians by a year-end target or pursue peace talks with Syria.

STORYLINE
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert tried to ease tensions with Syria, on Sunday, over a nationwide public-safety drill being conducted this week.
Israel has said the five-day home front security drill is meant to simulate responses to war and other emergency situations, including a large-scale attack or natural catastrophe.
The prime minister insisted the drill was a routine matter and reiterated a call for peace talks with Syria.
"We have no secret plans," Olmert said at his weekly cabinet meeting.
"This drill is not part of something else. I believe the Syrians know this and they have no reason to interpret this drill otherwise," he added.
Olmert said that Israel was not seeking violent conflict in the north and insisted that his government was more interested in peace talks with Damascus.
Israeli officials have denied the exercise was related to current frictions along Israel's northern border with Syria and Lebanon, and said messages have been sent to those countries to try to explain the nature of the drill.
Deputy Defence Minister, Matan Vilnai, said the drill beginning Sunday was meant to help Israel apply lessons from its 2006 war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.
Vilnai said no forces have been mobilised for the exercise along the northern front, and reservists have not been called up.
"There is nothing dangerous in this exercise. It is exercise only of the home front command," Vilnai told reporters ahead of Sunday's meeting.
Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV has said the group will be on high alert in light of the drill.

The security forces have been instructed to deal with this case, to investigate it, and to act as quickly as possible to bring those responsible, what appears to be another underground, to justice, so that they will serve the full punishment that they must bear for this terrible attempt they made."

STORYLINE:
An Israeli minister on Sunday called various allegations regarding an Israeli involvement in an attack in Syria which killed 17 people a day earlier as "outrageous".
Minister Isaac Herzog said that, since Israel is involved in indirect peace talks with Syria, there could be "elements" that would want to derail this process.
One such element, Herzog said, is "mostly Tehran who feels that Syria might be moving towards a peace coalition in the region despite its problematic behaviour so far."
The last major bombing in Damascus was on New Year's Eve in 1997, when a blast on a public bus killed 12 people and wounded dozens. Syria accused Israel, but the Jewish state denied the charge.
Meanwhile, at the Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert condemned a recent upsurge of violence coming from extreme right wing Israelis saying it is "threatening Israeli democracy."
His comments come days after an Israeli professor and peace advocate was wounded by suspected extremists in a bomb attack on his home in Jerusalem on Thursday.

Syrian border crisis on cabinet agenda

Thousands of people have poured over Syria’s border to Turkey, fleeing a battle between Kurdish forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) near the border town of Tal Abyad, prompting close attention from Turkey’s cabinet.
Turkish authorities closed the border on June 14 after allowing in at least 3,000 people, as thousands of others remained stranded, with many spending the night outside the frontier fences.
Dozens of Syrian refugees poured into Turkey on June 15 after Ankara reopened the border. Some 400 Syrians had initially been given permission to enter Turkey June 15 through the Akçakale border crossing in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, with some 1,000 clustered behind barbed wire, AFP reported.
Forces from the Kurdish People’s Defense Units (YPG) and the Women’s Defense Forces (YPJ) backed by Syrian rebels advanced on the southeastern edge of Tal Abyad, also known as Gire Spi, on June 14, as U.S.-led strikes against ISIL fighters continued.
Syrian Kurdish forces cut June 15 a vital supply road linking the flashpoint border town of Tal Abyad to ISIL’s bastion of Raqqa, a Kurdish commander told AFP.
“The Kurdish People’s Protection Units have cut the route” leading south out of Tal Abyad, which lies on the Syrian-Turkish border, said commander Hussein Khojer.
Last week, approximately 16,000 people fled to Turkey to escape the fighting, but the border has been closed sporadically, with Ankara saying it would only allow refugees into the country in the event of a humanitarian tragedy.
“If Turkey accepts a new wave of refugees from Tal Abyad, it means that Turkey should be prepared for an influx of at least 100,000 refugees,” Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş said June 14.
“We are of the opinion that there isn’t a humanitarian crisis in Tal Abyad, similar to Kobane or other regions in Syria. Therefore, we want to make humanitarian aid on the border,” he told private CNNTürk television.
There was speculation the decision to close the border on and off for thousands of Syrians and then open crossings to let them take shelter in Turkey was due to Ankara’s concerns over the YPG’s advance into Tal Abyad, which would finally link two of Rojava’s cantons, Kobane and Jazira.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan earlier said he was troubled by the advance of Kurdish forces to Tal Abyad, saying they could in the future threaten Turkey. Erdoğan has previously said he saw no difference between the radical Islamists of ISIL and the secularist Democratic Union Party (PYD), the political wing of the YPG/YPJ.
The president alleged that ethnic Arabs and Turkmens were being targeted in the advance.
He said the places refugees had vacated were being occupied by the PYD and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
“This is not a good sign,” he said. “This could lead to the creation of a structure that threatens our borders.”
A written statement by some 15 Syrian groups also said Tel Abyad residents were leaving homes to escape a “cleansing by the PYD.”
Turkey, along with its Western allies, considers the PKK to be a terrorist group. Ankara also accuses the PYD of being the Syrian wing of the PKK.
Erdoğan has repeatedly expressed concern about the West’s backing for Kurdish forces in Syria, saying it could lead to PKK domination of northern Syria.
However, he U.S. Embassy to Ankara said on its Twitter account on June 15 that ISIl was the cause of the increase in refugees.
“Coalition airstrikes in northern Syria have targeted and destroyed ISIL units and worked hard to avoid civilian casualties,” it said.
“Civilian outflows from Tal Al-Abyad are the result of people fleeing fighting brought about by ISIL. Contrary to insinuations from some in the media, the coalition works hard to ensure civilians are not hit in airstrikes,” it said.

Britain’s involvement in the new Iraq war is a doomed and dangerous gesture
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/25/britain-new-iraq-war-doomed-token-gesture
With no proper strategy, the return to conflict will only reinforce the politics of fear that is the grimmest legacy of the Blair era
Simon Jenkins The Guardian, Thursday 25 September 2014
This is the moment in any war when peace goes dumb. The cause is just. The enemy is in our sights, and the provocation is extreme. Blood races through tabloid veins. It is white feathers for dissenters. The British government’s evident eagerness to bomb Iraq will be put by David Cameron to the House of Commons on Friday. With an election in the offing, Labour’s Ed Miliband dares not disagree.
The prime minister’s case, made to the United Nations on Wednesday, is that the Islamic State (Isis) rebellion is “an evil against which the whole world must unite”. No one would quarrel with that. Unlike Cameron’s abortive bid to bomb Syria last year, legality is covered by an invitation from Iraq’s hapless rulers in Baghdad and a refusal to bomb Syria. Past mistakes in Iraq, says Cameron, should not be an excuse for inaction. “We must not be so frozen with fear that we do not do anything at all.”
Nor should we be so intoxicated by war fever as to do the wrong thing. Iraq has been chief bomb target for western electoral machismo since Bill Clinton’s “Monica Lewinsky” air strikes in 1998. They initiated a decade of mendacity. Saddam Hussein’s weapons arsenal was declared eliminated, then it was not. After killing hundreds of civilians, Tony Blair and his cabinet declared that Iraq still posed “an imminent threat to Britain”. The subsequent war was said to have installed freedom and democracy in that country, another untruth. As the Royal United Services Institute concluded in a recent survey, far “from reducing international terrorism … the 2003 invasion [of Iraq] had the effect of promoting it”.
Those demanding a resumption of the bombing should explain how things are different this time – or be guilty of willing mission creep. So far they could hardly be less convincing. An indication is their resort to adjectival hysteria, Isis being variously repulsive, genocidal, atrocious, monstrous, unspeakable, satanic. Everyone seems to accept that air strikes “alone” cannot win. Yet everyone also asserts that there is no question of following them with ground attacks, which is the essence of coordinated war. They are merely to “degrade Isis assets”, mostly by demolishing empty buildings at vast expense. They are sending “a message” to someone or other.
Cameron’s strategy is apparently to leave local Iraqi forces to deliver victory. That might be reasonable, given that they are the most expensively trained troops on earth. But they have shown themselves useless. They have been given intensive bombing cover by the Americans for seven weeks, and Isis is firmly in place. Meanwhile, Cameron refuses to hold his nose and form a tactically vital alliance with Assad of Syria and with the Iranians. He appears not to want to win................
The return to war will reinforce the politics of fear – which is the grimmest legacy of the Blair era in Britain. It has Cameron popping in and out of his Cobra bunker like a rabbit in a hole. Every government office, every train, every airport welcomes visitors to Britain with terror warnings and alerts. Cameron does this because he knows he can only get Britons to go to war by portraying Isis as a “threat to Britain’s national security”. Some Isis adherents may have criminal intent, but that is a matter for the police. Britain survived a far greater menace from the IRA without crumbling. Its existence is not threatened by jihadism. The claim is ludicrous. Cameron must have no faith in his own country.
The contrast between Asia’s eastern and western extremities is now stark, the one booming, the other descending into catastrophic instability and medieval horror. It is impossible not to relate this to two centuries of western imperialism and meddling. It strains belief that further intervention – through the crudest of all forms of aggression – can bring peace and reconciliation.
Islam’s wars are not Britain’s business. We owe their human victims all the aid we can to relieve suffering. We do not owe them our incompetence in trying to recast their politics. That is a task for the Arabs and their neighbours, not for Britain’s soldiers and taxpayers.

Since re-assuming the post of Russia's President Vladimir Putin has lost no time in addressing the geo political threats to Russia internationally. And now at the centre of its agenda is the explosive situation in the Middle East, most of all in Syria. President Putin has drawn a deep hard-line on the sand around the survival of the Bashar al-Assad regime. But Russia's intervention in Syria is also about Moscow preserving the port rights to Russia's only Mediterranean naval port at Tartus. In the event of the showdown with NATO, this base becomes strategically important for the Russia. Russia's intervention comes at a time when a $500 million US arms programme to train and equip 5000 Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State militants has ended in total failure, a fact confirmed by the New York Times. Many of these strange fighters had turned over the gear and ammunition and possible weapons to the Al-qeda linked al-Nusra Front operating in northern Syria. And US President Obama's reluctance to play a proactive role after the reversal over his Syrian chemical weapons redline in September 2013 destroyed what little credibility he had in the region, signalling perhaps that he was not an iron willed leader. With no solution insight in to the four year war in Syria, there are now four million Syrians scattered throughout the region making them the world's largest refugee population under the United Nations mandate. At this rate the UN predicts, there could be 4.27 million Syrian refugees by the end of 2013, the worst exodus since the Rwandan genocide 20 years ago.
