Burundi's crisis deepens following last week’s reported clashes between an unidentified rebel group and the Burundi Defense Force in the northwestern region of Burundi. The Burundian military killed over 30 militants and captured 170, according to the army's spokesman. While the presidential vote is still scheduled for July 21, it appears President Pierre Nkurunziza now faces an apparent armed rebellion.
VICE News attended the Burundian army's press conference in the Cibitoke province, where the military showed off the weapons seized after the conflict, as well as their captives, alleged to be the rebels responsible for attacking the Burundian military.

The Buterere neighborhood of Burundi's capital city Bujumbura is a stronghold of support for the National Forces of Liberation, one of the main opposition parties currently campaigning against President Pierre Nkurunziza.
Buterere is also the site of many demonstrations and clashes between protesters and police since Nkurunziza announced his candidacy for a highly contested third term in April.

Following a night of intense gunfire and explosions in Burundi's capital of Bujumbura that left at least one civilian and one police officer dead, voters turned out in low numbers for the country's controversial presidential election, in which President Pierre Nkurunziza is seeking a third term that critics charge is unconstitutional.
The body of an opposition member was found dead in the commune of Nyakabiga, and residents have accused supporters of the ruling party of planting the body as an act of intimidation. As Red Cross workers removed the body from the neighborhood, anti-Nkurunziza songs, dances, and chants erupted from a crowd of residents, delivering one of the most open displays of defiance against the president that the capital has seen in many weeks.

In the past several weeks, gunfire and explosions have pierced the night in Bujumbura, Burundi's capital. The identity of the shooters has remained a mystery, although many suspect the police, in conjunction with the Imbonerakure, the youth wing of the ruling party. Considered by some to be an armed militia, the Imbonerakure have been accused of helping police quell dissidents. In neighborhoods where residents are opposed to Burundi's ruling party and therefore subject to the night raids, people have organized to protect themselves — destroying entrances to neighborhoods, creating a communication system that notifies residents when an intruder has entered the community.
VICE News visits an opposition neighborhood in Bujumbura during the night to see what defense measures have been put in place, and witnesses the aftermath of the violence.

Though the presidential elections in Burundi have concluded, political violence surrounding the controversial vote has not simmered. On the night of July 22, members of the Imbonerakure, the youth wing of the African nation’s ruling party, are alleged to have murdered a member of the FNL opposition party in the capital of Bujumbura.
On July 24, the results of the election were announced and as was widely expected, Pierre Nkurunziza was declared the winner of a third five-year term as president.
Following the announcement, VICE News visited opposition and pro-Nkurunziza neighborhoods in Burundi’s capital, where residents have vastly different opinions about the legitimacy of his third term.

Burundi once enjoyed a vibrant media scene, with many independent journalists and radio stations operating freely. Yet when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his bid for a highly contested third term in office in April, it sparked mass protests. Since then, authorities and pro-government bodies have intimidated and arrested journalists.
The attempted coup d'etat in capital Bujumbura on May 13 was the tipping point for free media in Burundi. The offices of independent radio stations were firebombed for reporting information about the coup and fierce fighting broke out over control of the state media headquarters. Most of the offices remain shuttered to this day, and access to information has been suppressed in the weeks since, as rumors of a civil war run rampant throughout the city.
VICE News goes on a tour of media offices that have been firebombed, and visits the last standing independent newspaper in Bujumbura.

VICE News correspondent Danny Gold (https://twitter.com/DGisserious) joined On The Line to discuss the Burundi’s controversial presidential election.
In April, Burundi’s incumbent president, Pierre Nkurunziza, announced plans to run for a third term in office — a move many claimed was unconstitutional. The political maneuver sparked violent clashes between Nkurunziza's supporters and those opposed to his third term, triggering a wave of government-sponsored repression and intimidation. Danny Gold traveled to Burundi for VICE News where he spoke to citizens on both sides of the political divide for “Burundi on the Brink.”

At least 100 rebels have been killed after a cross-border attack against the central African nation of Burundi from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a top military source told AFP on Sunday.
A general in the Burundian army, speaking on condition that he not be named, said the attack by the unidentified rebel group had been defeated after five days of heavy fighting in the border area north of the capital Bujumbura.
"After five days of non-stop military operations, the armed group which attacked Burundi has been wiped out by our security forces. In total, we killed 105 of them and captured four, out of a total of the 121 who entered Cibitoke province from the DRCongo," the general said.
"We also seized a 60mm mortar, five rocket launchers, machine guns and more than 100 assault rifles," he said, adding the Burundian army had lost two soldiers.
There was no further confirmation of the claim, with the army declining to comment officially on the fighting while operations in the area were still in progress.
Burundian officials and witnesses said the group of unidentified rebels crossed into Burundi overnight Monday from DRCongo's eastern Kivu region, a chronically unstable and resource-rich area that is home to dozens of rebel groups.
A previous toll given on Wednesday put the toll at 35 dead, including 34 rebels and one government soldier.
Previous attacks in Burundi's border region have been claimed by a splinter faction of the National Liberation Forces (FNL). The main body of FNL — a highly disciplined group notorious for singing hymns as they carried out attacks — signed a peace deal with the Burundian government in 2009 and have since become a political party.
The rebels who still fight on have claimed a string of attacks this year, most recently in October when they claimed to have killed six soldiers, and vowed to "intensify" their raids ahead of presidential elections in June 2015. The group, however, have denied they were behind the latest attack.
Burundi, a small nation in Africa's Great Lakes region, emerged in 2006 from a brutal 13-year civil war and its political climate remains fractious ahead of presidential elections scheduled to take place this year.

Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza is back in the capital Bujumbura following a failed coup attempt in the country.
Nkurunziza is set to address the nation later in the day. Meanwhile, the leader of the coup, General Godefroid Niyom-bare is on the run after he managed to flee his captors after being arrested. Earlier, two other senior figures involved in the coup, surrendered to the police. The coup was declared by a section of the military two days ago while the president was visiting Tanzania. Burundi plunged into turmoil after Nkurun-ziza officially announced he will run for president. The opposition calls this an unconstitutional third term in office. Burundi’s civil society has called for fresh demonstrations in the country.

============
1 - Safari While you are in Tanzania you may organize your safari to Serengeti and other National parks at an affordable price. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari. Contact some of the tour operators for Safari Details.
2 - Cultural Tours Touring Tanzania for culture is interestingly great as it encompasses more than 150+ ethnic groups. There is plenty of traditional food, cultural practices (such as hunting with bushmen, beeskeeping, traditional medicine) that one enjoys within the boundaries. You will also get to visit a number of locations that normally people would be completely unaware of. If you happen to be a person who loves to explore the world and meet new people in order to gain knowledge about different customs, a cultural tour is definitely the best type of vacation for you.The services are not expensive and can turn out to be cheaper than expected provided you get the right information on where to stay, best tour companies and just knowledge of what you want. This way, it will save you time and costs as well.
3 - There are loads of National Parks for those wanting to watch Tanzania's wildlife. You can gain entry for around $100 US and benefit from a tour (and perhaps a night's accommodation). The better parks, though packed with tourists, are found in the north of the country. Ruaha National Park is the best in the south (locals actually say this is the best park, especially if you want to see wild animals as opposed to semi-tame ones in the northern parks). Don't just be sucked into the tourist circuit in the north; the south offers great parks and towns (base yourself out of Iringa), and you will feel less of a tourist and more of a guest if you travel this way.
4 - Scuba diving in and around Pemba and Zanzibar is another good experience.
5 - You can also visit numerous historical Slave Trade sites, which could make for an interesting, if a little depressing, excursion.
6 - Beaches: Did you know that Tanzania has some of the best, most unspoiled beaches in the world? They are stunning, with their white sand, palm trees, and cool Indian Ocean water!
7 - Kayak the beautiful coastal waters with a tour operator.
8 - Tanzania has two of the best Stone Age sites in the world: Isimila Gorge (near Iringa) and the earliest known examples of human art among the rock paintings, near Kolo, north of Dodoma -- some of which are reckoned to be around 30,000 years old.
9 - Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania's main attractions. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

Wirth Center for Performing Arts (St. Cloud, MN):
African Drumming (ages 7-15) - Learn traditional West African music on authentic African instruments like djembes, dundun, kpanlogo drums, gourd xylophones, bells, and shakers. You will also enhance your global awareness by discussing the similarities and differences of lifestyle and music, experiencing the food and dress of West Africa, playing African children's music games, and singing songs in West African languages. Summer 2015 Camp: July 6th-10th.
African Dance (ages 7-15) - This class breaks down West African dance into do-able movements that emphasize feeling the beat and whole-body coordination. Dance to West African music and learn how the movements are connected with the rhythm of the drums and culture of the people. Part of the class is danced with live drumming with the African Drum class. You will also explore other artistic forms of West African culture like food, dress, kente cloth, language, and music making. Summer 2015 Camp: July 6th-10th.
Junkyard Percussion Camp (ages 7-15)
From trashcans and buckets to brooms and rubber tubes, kids create highly integrated rhythms out of anything and everything that can create sound. Much like the percussion group STOMP!, you will explore whole body music making through clapping, stomping, vocalizing, and choreographed movement. The camp incorporates improvisation as well as learning set pieces including the "Cup Song."
Summer 2015 Camp: July 6th-10th
St. Cloud Community Drum Circle (all ages) - Gather in a circle with drums and other percussion instruments to create music. Through listening and cooperation, music is created by improvisations of individual members of the circle that ultimately create a groove. A facilitator, who sometimes stands in the middle of the circle, directs when to start and stop, go fast or slow, play loud or soft, and leads you through different drumming games and activities. Each drum circle event is a unique and different experience. People with no musical training to the most advanced musicians are successful in the drum circle. There is no music notation to be read or strict technique rules to follow. Everyone can drum - Illness, disability, age, gender, race, ability, and education do not matter! Summer 2015 dates: Sunday, June 21st 3-4 pm. Sunday, August 2nd 3-4 pm. All drum circles will gather at the Wirth Center. Weather permitting, we play outside in chairs on the grass. wn.com/2014 2015 Wirth Center West African Drummers Dancers
Cost: FREE when you bring your own drum. (If you don't have a drum to bring, you can rent a drum or percussion instrument for $2. Reserve your drum ahead of time at karinmariekoenig.wix.com/st-cloud-drum-circle or come a few minutes early to claim your instrument!)

Burundi's President, Pierre Nkurunziza loves nothing more than taking to the soccer field. He uses these appearances, which inevitably draw large crowds, to push his message of peace and reconciliation.
"We shouldn't hold back on attacking but we shouldn't hurt him," a coach tells his team who are about to play the Haleluya Football Club. The Halelyua team's star player and focus of the coach's remark is none other than Nkurunziza. Burundi's "Football President" believes that the great game can unite the tribal divisions that ravaged his nation. "Soccer in Burundi is very popular and when you come here you see all the people, even the old men, old women, come to watch. It is very important to unite the people." Until four years ago Nkurunziza was a rebel soldier waging a guerilla war against the Tutsi soldiers. In 2005 he was elected President under a deal to end the conflict between the Tutsi-dominated army and Hutu rebels. Finally a ceasefire seems to be holding. "We can publicly announce that we have ended the war. And the energy we were using to fight and to flee, will now be used to mend the hearts of the people of Burundi and to develop our country," exclaims Nkurunziza. The government has promised universal health care and free primary education. Yet in a nation where money is sparse, everyone is called in to help and the President is setting the example.

In line with the national policy of Burundi and Cordaid’s preferred way of working, this is done using a results based financing approach to ensure full coverage of eligible children and women with quality services.

According to Burundian tradition, role plays take place every month and convey the knowledge that benefits the local community. Recent topics, led by HealthNetTPO, have been family planning, good nutrition or preventing diseases by stressing the importance of going to a health centre instead of visiting traditional healers.
HealthNetTPO is a Dutch aid agency that works on health in areas disrupted by war or disasters. In these areas people are facing the immense task of rebuilding society while they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional consequences of conflict. We use ‘health’ as both a goal and means: the goal is to reach accessible health care for all. By working on that together with local communities we use ‘health’ as a means to bring people together and to restore mutual trust.

Community health worker Désiré Nkunziman thanks the public who funded malaria kits in his remote village in Burundi. He said "Concern's donation of malaria kits could not come at a better time." Désiré has had no malaria kits since June following a shortage at the health centre. Malaria infection rates are the highest during the rainy season which is a time of intense agricultural activity.

Burundi Travel Video - Beautiful Burundi has been blighted by a generation of ethnic conflict, but with the advent of peace, this charming country may at long last be able to put its dark past to rest. A tiny little nation of soaring mountains and languid lakeside communities, Burundi is sandwiched between the African giants of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania. The scenery is stunning and the welcome warm, and it may once again begin to receive a trickle of travellers as the word gets out that the war is over.
The steamy capital Bujumbura has a lovely location on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and just outside the city are some of the finest inland beaches on the continent. Ask the old Africa hands about Burundi before the war, and it is the sort of place they go misty-eyed about and hark back to the life of the lotus-eaters. Sadly there has been no lotus-eating for most Burundians during more than a decade of violence.
Many of the upcountry attractions have been off limits for years, but the stunning scenery and warmth of the Burundians more than compensates. Choose from the southernmost source of the Nile, the ancient forest of Parc National de la Kibira or the spot where Stanley was reputed to have uttered those timeless words Dr Livingstone I presume?.
Intertribal tensions have devastated the country since independence in 1962 and there is always a chance things could kick off again. It is a young peace, so make sure you do your homework before embarking on an adventure in Burundi.

Africa has 54 sovereign countries—the most on any continent—and is the second largest continent in terms of both land area and population. Africa is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, by the Red Sea to the northeast, and by the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Africa is a vast continent spanning over 8,000km (5,000 mi) north to south and 7,500km (4,800 mi) east to west (not including islands) and contains a wide array of peoples, skin colours, religions, and cultures. Africa contains the world's longest river—the 6,650km long (4,100 mi) Nile River running from Burundi to Egypt—while the Congo River in the DRC is the second largest in terms of discharge as well as the deepest with a depth of over 230m (750 ft) in some spots. Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest free-standing mountain at 5,890m (19,340 ft). Djibouti's Lake Assal is the second lowest point on Earth, the saltiest lake outside Antarctica, and one of the hottest places on Earth.
While the first activity most people associate with Africa is safaris, there are endless possibilities for adventure. You can purchase crafts in markets, venture into the Sahara with a Tuareg caravan, visit pygmy villages, hike through jungle to watch gorillas, relax on tropical islands in the Indian Ocean, snack on exotic treats, travel down a river in a dugout "pirogue", travel across savannah on a colonial-era railway, and much more.
Africa is a very diverse continent, with each country, or even each part of a country having its own unique culture. While it is common for people in the West to refer to Africa as if it was a single country, one should remember the sheer size of the continent, and that Africa is not one country but 54 different countries, meaning that it is impossible to make generalisations of Africa as a whole.
Tragically misunderstood by many people as a land of poverty, corruption, war and famine, and simply as a land of suffering—a misconception only bolstered by the media and the numerous NGOs on the continent—Africa today is a vast continent with many bustling metropolises, friendly people, and amazingly diverse and beautiful landscapes. While there are some places resembling the stereotypical Africa of war, famine, and poverty, most of the continent is peaceful, well-fed, and of working class .

Many visitors are attracted by the African flora and fauna and several countries benefit from Safari tourism to African National Parks.
Natural Wonders
Africa is home to many famous natural wonders, from the Nile River, the world's longest river, to Victoria Falls. The continent is home to two of the world's four volcanoes with permanent lava lakes—the dramatic Mount Nyiragongo which rises hundreds of metres above Goma, DRC and Erta Ale in Ethiopia's stark Danakil Depression (the others are Mt.Erebus in Antarctica & Kilauea in Hawaii). Both volcanoes can be climbed by the adventurous tourist to stand at the rim gazing in awe at the bubbling lava below, an especially incredible sight at night!

Historical civilizations
While the continent's diverse and unique wildlife is often all that is mentioned in regards to African travel, as home to the oldest civilizations on the planet, Africa has equally impressive cultures and history. The most famous civilization on the continent, and arguably in the world, is that of ancient Egypt. From the southern city of Abu Simbel to Luxor and all the way north to Alexandria and Cairo, including the Pyramids of Giza, the only surviving of the original Seven Wonders of the World and the most iconic symbols of this ancient kingdom. Sites from the Nubian-Kushite Kingdom that broke away from Egypt can be found in Sudan, such as Gebel Barkal and many other pyramids in Meroe.
Ethiopia offers many ruins from the ancient Axumite Kingdom where the Queen of Sheba ruled. The obelisks and Dungur ruins in Axum were built prior to the kingdom's conversion to Christianity, while many other great monuments, such as the Ezana Stone and the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, where the Arc of the Covenant is said to be stored, were built after the conversion as religious sites. Other famous Christian structures built later by the kingdom's successor, the Abyssinian Empire, especially during the 12th and 13th centuries, can also be found in Lalibela.

Britain has warned its citizens to avoid "all but essential travel" to Burundi, following violent protests. At least six people have been killed during three days of violent protests, following the announcement by incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza that he will stand for a third term.
Human rights group, Amnesty International says South Africa should step in and end the current political crisis in Burundi. Its deputy regional director for East Africa, Sarah Jackson says the "clampdown on protestors could risk the situation spiraling out of control".

I spent the entire month of August in Burundi, Africa on a missions trip with a non profit organization called Sister Connection. We worked with widows and orphans from all over the country, visiting homes, building relationships, and hosting camps (like VBS) for the kids. This is a compilation of video I took on the trip in an effort to capture what it was like to travel to one of the poorest countries on earth.

I backpacked through Africa by myself and loved it! I went through 13 countries (South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt). I definitely recommend others (even girls) to do it too.
I wrote 5 "how to" steps (including what phone to bring, $, etc) in the article, "How to Travel Africa Solo (Even as a Girl)" . Check it out here:
