The FIFA World Cup, often simply the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. The current champions are Spain, who won the 2010 tournament.
The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).
The 19 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams. Brazil have won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The other World Cup winners are Italy, with four titles; Germany, with three titles; Argentina and inaugural winners Uruguay, with two titles each; and England, France, and Spain, with one title each.

Anyway, as you've no doubt gathered, this is the Beeb's review of the 1990 World Cup finals, as broadcast on Boxing Day that year (BBC1, 10:30am). Des Lynam presents the highs, lows, and indifferences of a tournament that was far higher in drama than it was in quality football.
Without spoiling anything, look out for England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland all being there and achieving various degrees of success; Cameroon and Roger Milla upsetting the apple cart and making the quarter-finals; the first sendings-off in a World Cup Final that was little short of a disgrace; Pearce and Waddle's penalty heartbreak; Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci stealing the show for the hosts; Rudi Voeller getting sent off apparently for being spat on by Frank Rijkaard; and a washed-up Diego Maradona still being good enough to drag a very poor side all the way to the final, practically single-handedly (no pun intended). If you watched the tournament at the time, I guarantee that this will evoke plenty of memories, including of the no fewer than four countries who qualified yet no longer exist. (Bonus points if you can work them all out before they appear.) So enjoy!
I'm afraid there are some issues with the sound for the first five minutes or so, but that soon sorts itself out.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the 20th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men's national football teams organized by FIFA. It took place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014, after the country was awarded the hosting rights in 2007. It was the second time that Brazil staged the competition (the first was in 1950), and the fifth time that it was held in South America.

Old age is when you begin to say, I've never felt so young. The words of French writer Jules Renard could have been composed especially for Roger Milla, the Cameroon striker and African football icon, who exploded on to the international scene at the ripe old age of 38. A veteran blessed with enduring bursts of pace and an unerring eye for goal, Milla took Cameroon into uncharted territory for an African team as they reached the quarter-finals of the 1990 FIFA World CupTM in Italy. Incredibly, he also played four years later in the United States.

Excuse me a moment while I blow your mind: Italia '90 is now longer ago as England winning the World Cup was back then. To put it another way, 1966 to 1990 = 24 years; 1990 to 2014 (date of upload) = also 24 years. That's despite me remembering Gazza's tears like it happened yesterday, and Geoff Hurst and the Russian linesman and all that having always seemed like ancient history.
That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

Due to Ireland's surprising success at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, their business starts off well, but the relationship between the two friends soon becomes strained as Bimbo behaves more like a typical boss.

Mario Götze (born 3 June 1992) is a German footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga. In addition to his favoured role as a number 10, Götze is capable of playing as either a left or right winger and also as a false 9. Götze is considered to be one of the sport's best young players, possessing speed, technique, dribbling skills, and play-making capabilities. In 2010, German Football Association's then technical director Matthias Sammer described Götze as "one of the best talents Germany has ever had."

Robin van Persie (born 6 August 1983) is a Dutch footballer who plays as a striker for Manchester United and is the captain of the Netherlands national team. He is a youth product of Feyenoord. Having joined Arsenal in 2004, Van Persie became the club captain on 16 August 2011, one year before he joined rivals Manchester United. He is recognised as one of the best strikers in the world. His playing style and ability have drawn comparison to Dutch legend Marco van Basten.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the 20th FIFA World Cup, the tournament for the association football world championship, which took place at several venues across Brazil. Germany won the tournament and took its fourth title, its first since the reunification of West and East Germany in 1990, by defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final - the same result as the 1990 FIFA World Cup Final.
