Although Greece is the home of ancient gods, birthplace of European civilisation and a country of great warriors and philosophers it is also a country of many islands with tiny villages and white houses, a deep blue sea and almost constant sunshine.Athens is a lively city set in historic surroundings. Unique among all other Greek temples is the Acropolis whose imposing appearance and artistic decoration signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. Six female figures, the Karyatides, support the southern hall of the Ionic Temple of Erechtheion that stands on sacred ground close to the main temple. The imposing Mitrópolis is the main Greek Orthodox cathedral in Athens. A total of four architects designed this cathedral whose walls comprise the remains of no less than seventy former sacred buildings. The Cyclades Islands are situated in the middle of the Southern Aegean that like a magic circle flows around its former centre, the sacred island of Delos, Mykonos. For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. It’s no wonder that in these magnificent islands in the Aegean numerous gods, knights and tourists have always found much good fortune and enchantment!

Santorini Vacation Travel Guide - Travel Greece 2015
The island of Santorini has a pretty explosive past. It’s perched over the remains of a much larger land mass that sank almost 4,000 years ago when a volcano blew its top, leaving the blue caldera and steep cliffs behind.
It is these cliffs and the flooded caldera that have become Santorini’s iconic calling card, and the first stop on your Santorini tour. Here’s your first bit of trivia: The whitewashed homes that appear on so many postcards and photographs are larger than they appear on the outside. They’re partially built into existing cliffside caves, and feature some of the most distinctive Mediterranean architecture you’ll ever see.
Santorini sightseeing will no doubt bring you up the stairs and pathways to the blue-domed churches that stand guard over the island. From there, you can take in the exquisite view of the caldera and harbor below. If you get a little weary of the spectacular sights, don’t worry; there’s plenty of things to do besides wander the various clifftop towns. If you head down to water level, you can soak in the warm surf, explore Santorini’s many beaches, go for a drive along winding roads, or go on a fishing expedition from one of the harbors.
At the end of the day, gather with the residents and visitors atop the cliff towns and watch the sun drop into the ocean. You’ll never see a view quite like it.

Greece is the cradle of the European civilization, a quarry of mythology and ancient relics. On the Chalkidiki Peninsula we can visit the city of Thessalonica, the beaches of Katerini and Paralia, and from the boat we can take a look at the mystical monastery republic, Athos. Near the legendary Olympus Mountain we can take a look at the ‘rocks of gods’, the Meteora monasteries built on the sky-high cliffs. Athens’s well known building is the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The Agora was the marketplace of the ancient Athens, while the Plaka is a current, full of life eastern bazaar. From the capital the visitors can take journeys to the canal of Corinth and to the beaches of the Attican Riviera. From the dock of Pireus it is easy to take a boat and visit the islands of the Aegean and Ionic Sea. The islands tell us of Romans, Byzantines, pirates and knights. Among the olive tree gardens and orange trees white houses, temples and sunlit ruins are hiding. The sea is blue in the bays surrounded by beaches and on the terrace of a tavern the flavors of the Greek cuisine are always welcome.

Meteora is wonderful place( unique and unbelievable) where you can find 6 monasteries , 4 inhibited by men and 2 inhibited by women. The closest city is Kalambaka at just 5 km where you can find some hotels but the prices are pretty high , I suggest you to get accomodation in Larissa(100km away) or in Thessaloniki(250km away) , Meteora is a 1 day destination because if you follow to main road you can visit all monasteries in just few hours. You can visit here also a cave.
The Meteora means , 'middle of the sky','suspended in air'or 'in the heavens above' etymologically related with "Meteorite"
is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.
The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars,on the plane of Thessaly near the Pindus mountains in central Greece
You have 2 ways to get at Meteora , first is From Thessaloniki but you have to drive 250km and the second
is from larissa and you have to drive just 100km or you can take a bus from a travel agency.
About accommodation tell u that it is pretty bad and expensive ,
people usually come here to stay 1 night or maxim 2 because following the main road you can visit all monasteries in just 1 day

Yes or No? Greece Again on the Brink: Greek Debt Crisis (Dispatch 1)

For the past five years, Greece has been struggling with a financial crisis that has led the country to the brink of an exit from the euro and an economic collapse.
A huge bailout program of 240 billion euros ($266bn), borrowed from European countries and the International Monetary Fund, has let Greece survive for now, yet cuts and austerity measures have ensued.
Since last January, the new Syriza government has pledged to renegotiate the terms of the bailout program with its international creditors, promising an end to austerity. On June 26, after five months of negotiations, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced a referendum, calling the country to vote on whether or not to accept the new bailout proposal by its lenders.
Given the expiry date of the funding program just a few days later — and a lack of cash in the country — Greek banks were temporarily shut, a capital control was imposed, and people started queuing at ATMs to withdraw cash with a limit of 60 euros per day.
For many, the choice between "Yes" or "No" in Sunday's vote has been interpreted as "Yes to Europe" or "No to austerity."
VICE News took to the streets of Athens in an effort to understand what this critical moment for the country might mean for its position within Europe and the world, and most of all, for the Greek people.

There are many ancient Greek structures that were built in huge scale and in more grandeur condition, but only the top seven were chosen to be the best of the best, as the wonder of the ancient Greece.
1. Theatre of Epidaurus.
It is a huge theatre which can holds over 15 000 people, designed by Polykleitos the Younger in the 4th century BC. It is used for dramatic performances, ceremonial events, baths and palaestra (wrestling). The original 34 rows of setings were extended in Roman times by another 21 rows. As is usual for Greek theatres (opposed to Roman theatres), the view on a lush landscape behind the stage is an integral part of the theatre. The theatre is marveled for its exceptional acoustic properties too.
2. Statue of Zeus at Olympia.
The statue is made by Phidias at around 432 BC. It was erected in the Temple of Zeus, Olympia, Greece and it was one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World. The seated statue, which stands at height of around 12 m, was a chryselephantine sculpture made of ivory and gold-plated bronze. The statue occupied half of the width of the aisle of the temple and if the statue is made to be a standing figure, then it would unroof the temple.
3. Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
The temple was erected on the remains of earlier temple in around 7th century BC and it was designed by architects; Trophonios and Agamedes. The temple was a Doric hexastyle structure of 6 by 15 columns. It is destroyed in 373 BC by earthquake and then rebuilt with similar proportion in 330 BC by Spintharos, Xenodoros, and Agathon around the stylobate (stepped platform).
4. Colossus of Rhodes.
It was a statue of the Greek God, Helios erected in the city of Rhodes between 292 and 280 BC. It stands at a height of over 30 m, making it as one of the tallest ancient statues in the world. It is also one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World. It was constructed to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over the ruler of Cyprus. The statue is believed to be built of iron tie bars with brass plates fixed to form the skin. It is destroyed by 226 BC Rhodes earthquake.
5. Settlement of Santorini.
Santorini is a volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea. It is the site of Thera eruption, one of the greatest in history which occured some 3 600 years ago at the height of Minoan civilization. The eruption is also the source of the legend of Atlantis. There was once a town, called as Minoan Pompeii (Ancient Akrotiri) which was once destroyed in 1450 BC from the volcanic eruption. The impressive buildings of the town are the three-storeys houses, some even with balconies and extensively decorated with frescoes.
6. Palace of Knossos.
The great palace was built between 1700 and 1400 BC with periodic rebuildings after destruction. It is the political and ceremonial centre of Minoan civilization and culture on Crete. The palace appeared s a maze of workrooms, living spaces and store rooms close to a central square. The palace sits on 6-acres of land and had over 1 300 rooms as well as a theatre. Part of the palace is built up to five-stories high.
7. Parthenon.
As Colosseum is the icon of Rome, Parthenon is the icon of Greece even till today. It is among the most famous ancient structures on Earth. It is a temple in the Athenian Acropolis, dedicated to Greek Goddess Athena. Construction began in 447 BC and completed in 438 BC. It is the most important surviving building of classical Greece and is the culmination of development of Doric order. The temple had been used as a treasury, church and mosque before. The exceptional architectural features of the temple are the subtle correspondence between the curvature of stylobate, the taper of naos walls and the entasis (visual correction) of the columns. The overall view of the Acropolis, with the landmark, Parthenon standing overwhelmingly above others. This picture best describes ancient Greece.
Out of all these amazing ancient structures, only some survived till these days while others have been totally out of sight due to destructions from natural disasters or from the people itself. Even the survived structures have some portions partially destroyed. Many restoration works are being made to preserve these priceless structures that holds the key of the ancient Greece. As a conclusion, these seven wonders show how such impressive displays of engineering and architecture were managed in a time when technology is still at its infancy.

Eurozone leaders have worked with Greece to reach an agreement. The struggling nation will stay on the Euro currency and accept continued government cuts/austerity for the time being. The Greek people have been forced to double down on the same austerity that has crippled their economy and driven unemployment to record highs. "The beatings will continue until morale improves." Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?!), and Ana Kasparian (The Point) host The Young Turks. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"That’s the gist of the deal that keeps Greece in the euro, an agreement that will deepen the country’s recession, makes its debt position less sustainable and virtually guarantees that its problems come bubbling back to the surface before too long.
…what this means is that leaving to one side the interest payments on its debt, Greece will have to raise more in revenues than the government spends each and every year. If the performance of the economy is not strong enough to meet these targets, the “quasi-automatic” spending cuts will kick in. If Greece is in a hole, the rest of the euro zone will hand it a spade and tell it to keep digging.”*

Development, Thought and Policy Lecture Series: Austerity and Neoliberalism in Greece, sponsored by the Julien J. Studley Graduate Program in International Affairs (http://www.newschool.edu/public-engagement/ma-ms-international-affairs), at the Milano School for International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy (http://www.newschool.edu/milano). GPIA Professors Richard Wolff and Barry Herman share their insights, led by chair and moderator Achilles Kallergie, PhD Candidate in the GPIA program.
What austerity is about is shifting the burden of an economic crisis from one part of the population to another. The mass of Greek people did not force Andreas Papandreou to borrow money. The mass of the Greek people didn't know about or have much to do with fiscal policy at the national level. In fact, governments, bankers, leading industrialists, ship builders, the major players of the Greek economy, got together, as their counterparts did elsewhere, to produce the decisions that then, in the wake of the international collapse of capitalism, became unsustainable, producing a crisis in Greece. Once that had happened, there was only one question left: Who was going to pay the cost of all the debt Greece has run up or all the production decisions made that have left Greece without the capacity to export, with a dependence on imports etc.? And at that point, as has happened in every country - Greece is in no way unique - the wealthy and the business community went to work, with their resources and their business connections, to make sure that they didn't pay the price.

In this episode of the Keiser Report back in London, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the Greek situation and that a nation is not what it thinks it is but what others attempt to hide about that nation - like the fact that it is bankrupt. They discuss the role Goldman Sachs played in helping Greece hide its debts and, thus, strapping it to the euro and the mispricing of real risk by well-compensated bond investors lending to Greece at ultra low interest rates. They also discuss that, while deflated footballs was the main headline on the nightly news in America, a memo was delivered to Obama outlining the various ways that brokers defraud American investors of years worth of retirement income.

Now that a Grexit seems to have been averted, and the strictest cutbacks ever have been announced, Greece is entering a new chapter. The welfare state is dismantled even further and all state property is weighed and sold. What dangers are lurking, and how will the Greek sellout change the country?
Over six months after taking office, the new Greek political leaders reluctantly have to admit that they have lost the battle with the European creditors. Other ideas become more important. But what are those other ideas? Can the Greek take matters into their own hands, or will they accept more help from abroad? On this crossroads of developments, Backlight elucidates three painful options for Greece.
Captain Fu Chengqiu is in charge of the Chinese-run port of Piraeus, the container transhipment at the gateway to Europe that has been run very successfully by COSCO, a Chinese state-owned company. It is booming with economic activity. Containers are unloaded, lorries are constantly driving to and fro. But there is hardly a Chinese in sight. The Greeks that work here don't protest. Discipline is key. From his office with a view of the port, Fu explains his business philosophy. It is based on the manual of the new authoritarian capitalist Chinese style: work hard and don't whine. It seems to be working. While the Chinese piers are buzzing with activity, the Greek piers a little further down look desolate.
The gold and copper mine of Skouries is a paragon of Greek dilemma. The mine isn't Greek, it's Canadian. To get to the ore, a large part of the land is excavated. And the gold is not extracted in Greece, but in China. There is a great deal of opposition. Takis Kaltsos and Nina Karina have been involved in a conflict for years. They don't just have a problem with the widely hated privatizations of Greek interests, but also with the total sellout of their country - to say nothing of the environmental burden. But the mine provides jobs, and they are much needed. That is the only thing that keeps Greece afloat: jobs and investments, says Dimitris Tsiolakis The mine offers hope, he says. One would have to be a fool to object to that in today's circumstances.
Greek MP Kostas Lapavitsas believes that the Greeks should take matters into their own hands and stop relying on, what he calls, foreign interference, whether it comes from Europe, from China or from Canada. Not only is he a pronounced advocate of a Grexit, he is also highly concerned about the lack of faith and self-esteem among the Greeks. To prove that things can be different, he sends us to Naoussa, his power base, where hundreds of textile workers try to breathe new life into their bankrupt factory themselves. Greece doesn't need the corrupt elite, the workers say. It is perfectly capable of coping on its own.
The epilogue of this episode is the last euro coin factory in Greece, on the Albanian border. This is where Greece mints its one, two and five eurocent coins - as long as the Central Bank asks for them. And when it doesn't, there is always the alternative: shell casings for the army. In fact, the options are simple, say the handful of factory workers: it's either the euro or the bullet.

This coming Sunday, Greeks will face a decisive choice on whether they wish to stay in or leave the eurozone.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who was elected in January on a promise to end years of austerity, has called for a referendum - asking Greeks to decide on whether to accept creditors' proposals for more austerity in exchange for more loans.
Despite receiving two bailouts worth $266 billion since 2010, the country has been struggling with austerity and is in debt worth nearly 180 percent of its GDP.
Unemployment has more than doubled and pensions and benefits have roughly halved.
Tsipras' decision to campaign for a "No" vote led to the European Central Bank (ECB) to withdraw emergency lending, forcing Greece to cap bank withdrawals.
And in a shock move, Greece failed to pay a $1.73 billion payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the first time any nation has failed to pay the organisation in its 71-year history.
Siegfried Muresan, a member of the European Parliament and vice-chair of the Budgets Committee told Counting the Cost that the decision was "jeopardising" the lives of ordinary Greeks.
We also spoke to George Katrougalos, the Greek deputy interior minister, on what this could mean for the future of the country and what the Syriza party wants to achieve.
Afghanistan's lamb pelt trade
The falling price of Afghan lambskin is affecting the country's pelt industry. Some traders say exports are down by as much as 80 percent.
Lambskin is a niche product, usually used for women's luxury coats when it is sold in the West and is crucial to Afghanistan's ailing economic sector.
Nicole Johnston reports from Mazar-e-Sharif on how sheep farmers there are coping.

The Greek civilization is considered by historians as the first one in the history of mankind. A study of their archeological remains confirms that the ancient Greeks were a highly developed community. Their lifestyle and inventions indicate a high sense of order and aesthetics.
The ancient Greeks built houses along the shores of the land. They were dependent on the Aegean seas for their food supplies and other trade. Traveling brought them in contact with other cultures. They gained exposure to various agricultural methods and different types of metal work.
Different communities arose from the ancient Greece civilization. Some of them were the Aegean, Achaeans and the Pelasgians. Crete was the center of the Aegean civilization and was the dominant community in 2500 BC. The Achaeans made Mycenae their capital. A volcano caused the destruction of the Aegean community around 1400bc. The Mycenaeans absorbed the culture of the Aegean community.
In course of time, Greek settlements were transformed into city-states or poleis and each city-state was ruled by a king. The government was usually unstable due to the tyranny of the aristocrats. Democracy was hardly ever practiced.
The ancient Greeks were very keen on sports. The great athletic contest called the Olympic games began in 776 BC, which marked the beginning of the rise of the Greek civilization. At that point of time, Greek ideas were greatly influenced by many different foreign cultures. Artists were focusing on recreating human figures of mythology. The civilization saw its zenith around 500 BC. Excellence was seen in the fields of philosophy, art and literature. Wars with other civilizations began in 490 BC and the superior Greek armies overran their opponents to establish their supremacy. The ancient age of Greek civilization saw the birth of great philosophers like Pluto, Socrates, and the great emperor, Alexander.
The ancient Greeks were pagan. They prayed to the various elements of nature. They believed that favorable climate and good crops occurred when the gods were pleased. When things turned bad, they attributed it to the wrath of the gods. They performed sacrifices to appease the enraged gods.
Ancient Greeks were essentially simple-minded folks who left behind a beautiful legacy of art, philosophy and literature.

The world’s economic landscape has been rocked by the Greece Debt Crisis and as austerity looms over the Greek population - Athens burns, protests mount and fear of a Grexit rises. As discussions about debt forgiveness and a possible bailout continue the Eurozone is on edge with fears as to the future stability of the Euro and the possibility of economic collapse. As Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel engage in a showdown with the world watching, everybody is looking for answers as to how this problem originated.
What is the Truth About the Greece Debt Crisis? How did this start - and how can it be prevented in the future? Those who don’t learn from their mistakes shall be doomed to repeat them. Sadly, politicians never learn. There will be no economic recovery, prepare yourself accordingly.
Includes: the Greek Civil War, Greek Economic Miracle, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Economic Community, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), the Industrial Reconstruction Organization (OAE), the destruction of the drachma, the Koskotas scandal, the point of no return and much much more!
