Co-Pilot: [over the intercom] Hi, this is your co-pilot Ernie. Just wanted to point out a couple of sights of interest to you folks flying the Hong Kong cannonball for the first time. Taglines: A handful of men and women held out against the frenzied hordes of bloodthirsty fanatics!
Quotes:
Dr. Steinfeldt: [in the hospital, while the baroness refuses medical assistance] Don't you want to live?::Baroness Natalie Ivanoff: I *have* lived!
German Ambassador: You have to admire Sir Arthur; he always manages to give the impression that God must be an Englishman.
Baroness Natalie Ivanoff: You know, I think I'll get you to take me to San Francisco with you.::Maj. Matt Lewis: Oh? Why to San Francisco?::Baroness Natalie Ivanoff: Well, isn't that the place where they found all the gold?::Maj. Matt Lewis: [laughs]
Maj. Matt Lewis: He's a good soldier when he knows what he's fighting for.::Sir Arthur Robertson: It's easy when it's something you can see; a wall, a hill, a river, but how can you explain to them when it's for a principle.::Maj. Matt Lewis: You can't. Not here in China, it's too far from home.
Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi: The boxer bandits will be dealt with, but the anger of the Chinese people cannot be quieted so easily. The Germans have seized Kiaochow, the Russians have seized Port Arthur, the French have obtained concessions in Yunnan, Kwan See and Kwantang. In all, 13 of the 18 provinces of China are under foreign control. Foreign warships occupy our harbours, foreign armies occupy our forts, foreign merchants administer our banks, foreign gods disturb the spirit of our ancestors. Is it surprising that our people are aroused?::Sir Arthur Robertson: Your Majesty if you permit me to observe, the violence of the Boxers will not redress the grievances of China.::Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi: China is a prostrate cow, the powers are not content milking her, but must also butcher her.::Sir Arthur Robertson: If China is a cow, Your Majesty, she is indeed a marvelous animal. She gives meat as well as milk, and yet grows stronger.
Capt. Hoffman: [Just before the Relief Force arrives] Those guns! They aren't Chinese!
Capt. Andy Marshall: [Regarding the Boxers massed on the Tartar Wall] No sign of activity, hmm?::Sgt. Harry: No sir, I think they're all asleep.::Capt. Andy Marshall: Ah, but we'd better not be Sergeant. [Nodding to sleeping soldiers] You'd better wake them all up.::Sgt. Harry: [to English Soldier] Wake up! [to German Soldier] Guten Morgen! [to French Soldier] Bonjour! Bonjour! [to Italian Soldier] Buongiorno! [Picks up and looks at hat of Japanese Marine]... Good Morning?::Japanese Marine: Good Morning.
Baron Sergei Ivanoff: [Clapping sarcastically] Congratulations, Sir Arthur! It seems the British have won another bloodless victory!::US Minister Maxwell: I take it you have now unanimously decided to stay.::Baron Sergei Ivanoff: I shall report in my diary the first vote was nine-to-one, and that in a... friendly spirit it was then decided to make the decision unanimous.
Lady Sarah Robertson: [Unannounced, entering her husband's study] I'm sorry, Arthur. Are you busy?::Sir Arthur Robertson: Of course I am. I *always* am.::Lady Sarah Robertson: Busier than usual? Or just busy?::Sir Arthur Robertson: Both.
Lady Sarah Robertson: Do you remember what Napoleon said about China?::Sir Arthur Robertson: I never forget it: "Let China sleep. For when she awakens, the world will tremble."::Lady Sarah Robertson: He did say an awful lot, didn't he?

When deciding on a base in Southeast Asia we carefully thought about where to go. Soon it became a no brainer that Chiang Mai would be the perfect fit. Considering how affordable it is to live there in tandem with the amazing dining options certainly won us offer. Moreover, the Chiang Mai offers numerous top attractions and things to do. In our latest travel guide we attempt to highlight as many of our favorite attractions in Chiang Mai as possible:
1) Chiang Mai is famous for its night markets. We suggest starting off at the Sunday Night Market which is best explored from Thapea Gate. From handicrafts to silverware and from souvenirs to silks, you'll shop until you drop. In my opinion, an even better thing to do at the market is to indulge in as much Thai street food as possible.
2) Elephant tourism runs rampant in and around Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, the well being of the elephants is rarely a consideration. Visiting the Elephant Nature Park, known as an elephant sanctuary and rehabilitation center, is somewhere you can go to interact with elephants knowing full well they are being taken care of and not exploited. A trip to the park is a memorable experience that is both incredibly fun and extremely education.
3) From the roof of our apartment building we had often had unobstructed views of Doi Suthep. It was only a matter of time before we decide to take a Songthaew up to explore it on foot. Although it is very touristy, it is still well worth a visit - especially for the views of Chiang Mai!
4) Few cuisines are more famous around the world than Thai food. While you're in Chiang Mai be sure to take a cooking class to learn how to make all of your favorite Thai dishes. An even better idea is to go to the countryside where you can have a more authentic and rural cooking experience.
5) Although I love the Sunday Night Market my favorite night market in Chiang Mai happens on Saturday. Possibly because it is only a stone throw away from where we lived in Chiang Mai, I just enjoyed wandering through the maze of people and shops to eat as much Thai street food as possible.
6) You can't visit Chiang Mai without trying its most famous Northern Thai dish - Khao Soi. Crispy and soft noodles float around in a coconut milk base with various vegetables. It's delicious and one of the cheapest meal options in the city!
7) When you have time - and a friend to go with - reserve a table at a restaurant that specializes in Khantoke sets. Served with sticky rice and a plethora of small dishes you'll get a real sense of what Northern Thai food is all about.
8) Wander around the neighborhoods outside of the city center. A big part of why Chiang Mai is so charming has to do with its various neighborhoods. Get off the beaten path and just go explore around. Here we show you our neighborhood, which is not far from Chiang Mai South Gate.

wn.com/Things To Do In Chiang Mai Thailand | Top Attractions Travel Guide

Chiang Rai (เมืองเชียงราย) is a city in northern Thailand that I’ve always wanted to visit, and finally I had a chance to go. Keep watching this video for all the details.
From Bangkok, I first bought a plane ticket with Bangkok Airways - it was also my first time to fly with Bangkok Airways, though I had heard good things about them before. Our flight was in the morning so we took a taxi in Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi International Airport to catch our flight. After we checked it, we headed to our gate, and were greeted by a nice little display of snacks and coffee and tea - not bad for just a one hour flight that cost less than $50! After eating some banana chips and a few cheese sandwiches, our flight to Chiang Rai was ready to board. On the flight Bangkok Airways served us even more food. It was a nice flight, and it took just one hour to fly from Bangkok to Chiang Rai.
After landing in Chiang Rai, we got our bag, and then took a taxi into town. Ying and had booked a hotel called Amarin Resort, as I needed a nice place to get some work done, and we were looking for a place to get some nice relaxation as well. I immediately loved the resort we were staying at - it was nice and extremely quiet, the grounds were nice and green, and our room was quite big in size and very comfortable. After checking into our hotel and relaxing for a bit, we then headed out to eat lunch at a famous northern Thai restaurant, which was actually located just a 5 minute walk from our hotel, known as Lu Lam. We ordered a number of different Thai dishes, including one of my favorite northern Thai foods, lab khua, minced pork with lots of spices. The entire meal was quite wonderful, and it was a delicious first meal in Chiang Rai. I also loved that the restaurant was located right along the river, offering a lovely and peaceful atmosphere.
During the summer, the sun in Chiang Rai is intensely hot, especially in the middle of the day. So after lunch, we decided to head back to the hotel and I needed to get some work done. I wrote some blogs before we headed out again in the afternoon at about 4 pm when the sun was toned down quite a bit. We headed into Chiang Rai town, and our first stop was to walk around the Chiang Rai clock tower, an incredibly intricate and ornate golden clock tower, sort of the landmark of downtown Chiang Rai city. We then continued walking, and soon found ourselves in the evening central market, a vibrant display of all things northern Thai food. I wanted to actually eat everything I saw, but I was actually still quite full from the delicious lunch we had eaten not too long before. I ended up buying some avocados and some passion fruit, two of my favorite natural things.
After walking around the local food market, we then headed over to check out the Chiang Rai night bazaar. It turned out to be a little on the touristy side, not so much my style, but it could be a good place to go if you travel to Chiang Rai and are looking to buy some souvenir. There’s a food court at the Chiang Rai night bazaar, so we stopped there for a quick and light bite to eat. I ordered a dish called jim jum, which is basically the Thai street food version of a hot pot. We got a pot of soup boiling in a clay pot, accompanied by a basket of vegetables, an egg, and some chicken, and then we just boiled everything together. It wasn’t the best meal of my life, it was alright, but I just wanted to eat something for dinner that wasn’t too heavy or meaty - as I had eaten quite a huge lunch!
My first day traveling from Bangkok to Chiang Rai was a wonderful day. I immediately fell in love with Chiang Rai, how peaceful it is, and I really love the northern Thai culture and the food.

One of the reasons Chiang Mai is such a popular base for expats is the food. From Thai to International and from street food to restaurants, Chiang Mai has more quality restaurants per capita than I've experienced in any other city in Thailand let alone any other country! Whether you're into fine International dining or strictly a vegetarian you'll find your fix in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The following is a travel food featuring local Thai food, Northern Thai cuisine, street food, International cuisine, Southeast Asian delights and vegetarian restaurants for all budgets from backpacker to flashpacker:
1) Many visit Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai for experiences other than food; however, for those who visit Wat Suan Dok nestled behind the temple is a great Thai vegetarian restaurant called Pun Pun (Imm Aim). We ordered vegetarian spring rolls, mixed salad, Indian roti and curry set along with a sticky coconut rice dessert - all were excellent!
2) Indulging in Northern Thai delicacies is an absolute must in Chiang Mai. The most famous of dishes, Khao Soi, is done to perfect at Peppermint cafe. With a coconut curry base, boiled and crispy noodles and select vegetables (meat or chicken is optional) its a signature dish you'll likely be having more than once. In many ways it is similar to Thai Massaman curry. On the plus side, it is one of the most inexpensive meals you can find in Northern Thailand coming in at around 30 to 60 Baht.
3) One simply cannot come to Chiang Mai and skip out on the Saturday Night market. We were just going to go for a walk but instead we ended up feasting on twist potatoes, blueberry cheesecake ice cream, pan-friend dumplings, dim sum, chocolate and banana roti, YES! We were full by the end but our wallets weren't stretched that much as Thai street food is inexpensive.
4) A proper Northern Thai meal is something called a Khantoke set meal. Always including sticky rice many different curries, pork sausage and pickled dishes are presented in wicker baskets to enjoy.
5) Not far from our Thai apartment is a wonderful night market specializing in Thai street food stalls. One of our favorites is yellow egg noodles with dumplings in a soup broth. So good, so cheap!
6) One of my favorite desserts in the world (not just in Thailand) is mango sticky rice with coconut milk drizzled over top. It's the kind of dish you'll want all to yourself as sharing means less bites for you ;)
7) When it comes to Thai street food the ubiquitous Thai banana chocolate pancake has been sustaining backpackers for decades. Popular for good reason this dish can be eaten as a snack, dessert or for breakfast.
8) Pad Thai, possibly the most over-rated Thai dish, well known around the world. It's worth trying (at a restaurant or on the street) but don't limit yourself to just having this kind of meal when in Thailand. You may be surprised to know that many Thais find it kind of bland and boring.
9) For the best vegetarian food in Chiang Mai head over to Salad Concept where you can create your own wraps and/or salads with a plethora of different fresh ingredients. It is popular with hipster Thais, so you know it is good.
10) Finally, if you're in the mood for Korean food be sure to check out Korea House for great Korean pancakes and Korean dumplings.
This video is for all of our Korean fans.
What are some of your favorite Thai foods? Did we cover your favorite restaurants in Chiang Mai? Where did we miss?

Chiang Mai - City Video Guide
Sitting on the Ping River about 700 km north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai is a city of contradictions. While it maintains a reverence for its history and has many local temples, a sense of commerce is very much alive here. Indeed, Chiang Mai tourism thrives. If you’re looking for the cultural center of North Thailand, but still want to be immersed in good food and shopping, put Chiang Mai on your itinerary!
Start your day with a quiet meditation at one of the hundreds of Buddhist temples in the city. For a particularly spiritual experience, ask a tuk-tuk driver to take you on the 15 km journey up Doi Suthep (Mount Suthep) to the Wat Phra That Temple, which is simply called Doi Suthep temple by most locals. This temple is a quiet retreat for the spirit, and also happens to afford spectacular views of the city from its hilltop position.
After a morning of reflection, set out to explore some of the fresh food markets that line the streets. Chiang Mai tours should always include time at the market, where you will find a wide assortment of food, some of which are likely to be brand new to your eyes and taste buds! For a truly once in a lifetime experience, sign up for a one-, two-, or three-day training course at Baanchang Elephant Park, which nurtures sick and injured elephants back to health. You will train to ride the elephants and then have a hands-on experience with the animals through Thai hillside.
While the nightlife in Chiang Mai is quiet for such a cultural hub, you can still find plenty of dining and Chiang Mai sightseeing in the evening. End your day with a stroll through the night markets; here, venders sell food, jewelry, art, and more.
