Plot: With the assassination of his rowdy and bawdy father King Philip in 336 BC, Alexander gathers up his Home-Boy Macedonians (30,000 or so) and crosses the Hellespont to strike Darius and the Persian Horde. The Persians, of course, torched the Acropolis three generations earlier. The Greeks (and Macedonians) never forgot. During his herculean 12-year odyssey, Alexander succeeds in creating a world empire from the Danube to the Indus. Ever the glorious conqueror, he shows not only military genius, but compassion for the conquered. Alexander's women (aside from his mother Olympias) include his life-long consort, Barsine, who takes him on erotic / chemical "trips". There is also Roxanne, the Bactrian princess / wannabe dancer, his possessive first wife and True Love. His second marriage to Stateira, Darius' clueless daughter, doesn't set well with Roxanne, which starts the tragic time-clock ticking. Roxanne opts into a regime-changing scenario-- orchestrated back in Athens by Demosthenes and Macedonian rivals.

Quotes:
Alexander: I've come to believe the fear of death drives all men, Hephaistion. This we didn't learn as schoolboys.::Hephaistion: I've always believed, Alexander. But this seems so much bigger than us.::Alexander: Did Patroclus stare at Achilles when they stood side by side at the siege of troy?::Hephaistion: Patroclus died first.::Alexander: If you do... if you were to fall Hephaistion, I will avenge you, and follow you down to the house of death.::Hephaistion: I would do the same.::Alexander: On the eve of battle it's hardest to be alone.::Hephaistion: Then perhaps this is farewell, my Alexander.::Alexander: Fear not, Hephaistion. We are at the beginning.
Alexander: Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.
Hephaistion: You know better than any great deeds are donned by men who took, and never regretted. You're Alexander! Pity and grief will only destroy you.::Alexander: Have I become so arrogant that I am blind?::Hephaistion: Sometimes to expect the best from everyone is arrogance.::Alexander: Then it's true. I have become a tyrant!::Hephaistion: No! But perhaps a stranger. We've come too far. They don't understand you anymore.::Alexander: They speak of Phillip now as if I were a passing cloud, soon to be forgotten. I've failed. Utterly.::Hephaistion: You're mortal. And they know it. And they forgive you because you make them proud of themselves.
Olympias: My little Achilles.
Olympias: My poor child. You're like Achilles; cursed by your greatness. You must never confuse your feelings with your duties, Alexander. A king must make public gestures for the common people. You will be nineteen this summer, and the girls already say you don't like them, you like Hephastion more. I understand, it's natural for a young man. But if you go to Asia without leaving a successor you risk all.::Alexander: Hephastion loves me. As I am. Not who.
Cassander: Alexander, if we must fight, do so with stealth. Use your numbers well; we should attack tonight when they least expect us.::Alexander: I didn't cross Asia to steal this victory, Cassander.::Cassander: No, you are too honorable for that, no doubt influenced from sleeping with tales of Troy under your pillow. But your father was no lover of Homer's.::Parmenion: The lands west of the Euphrates, Alexander, and his daughter's hand in marriage! Since when has a Greek ever been given such honors?::Alexander: These are not honors, Parmenion, they're bribes! Which the Greeks have accepted too long! You forget, Parmenion, that the man who murdered my father lies across the valley floor.::Parmenion: Come, Alexander, we're not really sure if it was Persian gold behind the assassination. It is no matter! Your father taught you never to surrender your reason to your passion! I urge you, with all my experience, regroup! Fall back to the coast, raise a larger force!::Alexander: I would, if I were Parmenion. But I am Alexander. And no more than earth has two suns will Asia bear two kings. These are my terms. And if Darius isn't a coward who hides behind his men then he'll come to me tomorrow. And *when* he bows down to Greece, Alexander will be merciful.
Alexander: May all those who come here after us know, when they see this altar, that titans were once here.
Alexander: A thousand ships we'll launch from here, Hephaistion! We'll round Arabia, and sail up the gulf to Egypt. From there, we'll build a channel through the desert, out to the middle sea. And then we'll move on Carthage, and that great island Cecily; they'll pay large tribute. After that the Romans - good fighters, but we'll beat them. And then explore the northern forests, and add the pillars of Heracles to the western ocean. And then one day, populations will mix and travel freely. Asia and Europe will come together. And we'll grow old, Hephaistion, looking out our balcony at this new world.
Young Alexander: One day I'll be on walls like these.
Hephaistion: [on his death bed] I'll feel better. Soon I'll be up.::Alexander: We leave for Arabia in the spring, I can't leave without you!::Hephaistion: Arabia... you used to dress me up like a sheik and wave your wooden scimitar...::Alexander: You were the only one who'd never let me win. The only one who's ever been honest with me. You saved me from myself. Please don't leave me, Hephaistion.::Hephaistion: ...I remember the young man who wanted to be Achilles, and then out did him.::Alexander: And then what happens? That was a myth only young men believe!::Hephaistion: But how beautiful a myth it was.::Alexander: How we reach, we fall! Oh, Hephaistion.::Hephaistion: I worry for you without me.::Alexander: I am nothing without you!

MF131: Ptolemy's theorem and generalizations
The other famous classical theorem about cyclic quadrilaterals is due to the great Greek astronomer and mathematician, Claudius Ptolemy. Adopting a rational point of view, we need to rethink this theorem to state it in a purely algebraic way, without resort to `distances' and the corresponding infinite processes. Perhaps surprisingly, the Triple Quad Formula comes to our aid.

*** The ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician Ptolemy, and consider how and why his geocentric theory of the universe held sway for so many centuries. In his seminal astronomical work, the Almagest, written in the 2nd century AD, Ptolemy proposed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe and explained all the observed motions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars with a system of uniform circular motions which he referred to as 'epicycles'. But Ptolemy was a polymath and did not confine his study of the stars to mathematical equations. He was also interested in astrology and his book on this topic, the Tetrabiblos, tackled the spiritual aspects of the cosmos and its influence on individual lives and personalities.Ptolemy's model of the universe remained the dominant one for over a thousand years. It was not until 1543, and Copernicus's heliocentric theory of the world, that the Ptolemaic model was finally challenged, and not until 1609 that Johannes Kepler's New Astronomy put an end to his ideas for good. But how and why did Ptolemy's system survive for so long? ***

Ptolemy, the creator of our minutes and seconds system and the term setting and rising sun, a term in which we use today. Ptolemy also mapped the universe and shows it as a convex ball and earth as concave
Ptolemy’s astronomical studies were the foundation of his ideas about mapmaking.
For some forty years he made the astronomical observations which are the basis for the Syntaxis, which has since become more commonly known as the Almagest, Arabic for “The Greatest.” This book is the synthesis of Ptolemy’s scientific theories about the universe, where a spherical earth resided in the center of a spherical heaven. Ptolemy rejected the idea that the earth turned on its axis. In Brown’s words: “He admitted that it was a convenient explanation of the behavior of the heavens, but nevertheless ridiculous” (Brown, 1979, 59). We should not laugh too much. Many centuries later we still say that the sun “rises” in the morning and “sets” in the evening, just as it was thought to do in Ptolemy’s view of the universe!
Ptolemy’s studies in astronomy led to his principles for mapping on a precise framework. Identifying particular star locations as points on a grid requires the same techniques that are used in mapping the earth. The Almagest includes instructions for making a celestial globe with a system of coordinates (grid) for 1,022 stars, and the identification of 48 constellations. Further, Ptolemy proposed a system of dividing the 360 degrees of the globe further into the “minutae primae” and “minutae secundae” that became our minutes and seconds. The principles laid down in the Almagest are fundamental to mapping the earth, and it is significant that Ptolemy wrote the Geographia after he had completed the Almagest (Dilke 1987, 183).
No manuscript copy of the Almagest dating earlier than the twelfth century is known, when a Greek manuscript of it was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona (Dilke 1987, 177). At the time it seems to have evinced little notice by scholars.

Once we have a rational formulation of this classical result, we can understand that it applies in considerable more generality than is usually supposed. We can interpret Ptolemy's theorem over a finite field--which we here introduce in a somewhat informal way, as well as over a relativistic planar geometry in the direction introduced by Einstein, and also Lorentz and Minkowski.
A wide new avenue of thought looms into view: that many classical results of Euclidean geometry, when formulated logically correctly without reference to the `completion of infinite processes', yield much more general and wide ranging results opening up many new areas of investigation!

Sincopat welcome back one the most promising artists of 2015. Third Son already released on Sincopat the huge track Entrance Acid, included in the first Vomvo compilation mixed by Darlyn Vlys last year.
Born into a musical family and studying many different styles of composition from an early age, Joseph Thomas Price presents three stunning tracks to our label, also including a remix by the label head honcho AFFKT.
The talented English producer presents three burner tracks of futuristic and tasteful Tech-House. Rich textures are presented into an amazing and effective base. Three strong tracks which made really difficult for us to choose an A-side here, but let’s try to talk briefly about them. Get to the Chopper is a new vision of the Acid House where new flavours are added in perfect harmony. Ptolemy is offering a huge and solid groove, taking the usual Tech-House to another warm level. With Deo, Third Son plays a bit more with melodies, letting AFFKT to twist them and create an amazing reinterpretation of organic music that grows and grows till the ecstasy.
Enjoy!

Transcendent Man Australian premiere, in Melbourne. On Friday 19th of Aug 2011.
Panel afterwards with Ben Goertzel, Steve Omohundro, and Hugo de Garis.
The compelling feature-length documentary film, by director Barry Ptolemy, chronicles the life and controversial ideas of luminary Ray Kurzweil. For more than three decades, inventor, futures, and New York Times best-selling author Ray Kurzweil has been one of the most respected and provocative advocates of the role of technology in our future.
In Transcendent Man, Ptolemy follows Kurzweil around the globe as he presents the daring arguments from his best-selling book, The Singularity is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology. Kurzweil predicts that with the ever-accelerating rate of technological change, humanity is fast approaching an era in which our intelligence will become increasingly non-biological and millions of times more powerful. This will be the dawning of a new civilization enabling us to transcend our biological limitations. In Kurzweil's post-biological world, boundaries blur between human and machine, real and virtual. Human aging and illness are reversed, world hunger and poverty are solved, and we cure death.
Ptolemy explores the social and philosophical implications of these changes and the potential threats they pose to human civilization in dialogues with world leader Colin Powell; technologists Hugo deGaris, Peter Diamandis, Kevin Warwick, and Dean Kamen; journalist Kevin Kelly; actor William Shatner; and musician Stevie Wonder. Kurzweil maintains a radically optimistic view of the future, while acknowledging new dangers. Award-winning American composer Philip Glass contributes original theme music that mirrors the depth and intensity of the film.

TV Multiversity is proud to present a five part series featuring Professor C. K. Raju interviewed by Claude Alvares. Professor Raju brings to bear his immense knowledge of mathematics, history, and philosophy in providing a systematic deconstruction of the Eurocentrism of mathematics as currently conceived and taught. Beginning with a discussion of why mathematics has become so difficult to learn, the interviews proceed through the myths surrounding the 'heroes' of Western science, from Euclid to Einstein. They also cover the transmission of mathematical knowledge from India through the Islamic world into Europe, where it was initially misunderstood but then coopted and corrupted by the Holy Roman Empire. One of his most startling conclusions is that mathematics has become essentially religious in nature, and he offers a way to think about and practice mathematics shorn of its theological assumptions and historical accretions. Professor Raju has developed this material over a series of books, ranging from 'Time: A Consistent Theory' (1994) to his latest work, 'Euclid and Jesus' (2012). Conducted in Penang, Malaysia, during June 2013 and totalling over nine hours of material, these exclusive new interviews were produced and distributed on behalf of the Multiversity Project for the Multiworld Network and are presented here for the first time.
In Part Three, Prof. Raju criticises the inappropriate designation by historian of science Thomas Kuhn of the work of Copernicus as a 'paradigm shift,' noting that Copernicus borrowed from the Arabs, and further suggesting that Ptolemy probably did not exist.
In 2010 C. K. Raju was awarded the Telesio-Galilei Gold Medal in Hungary for correcting a mistake made by Einstein in the theory of relativity. Prof. Raju presently teaches at AlBukhary International University in Malaysia, where he has designed a course on 'decolonized' history and philosophy of science The course demonstrates that science and mathematics originated universally, and not with the Greeks as claimed in the myth propagated by Western historians. His most recent work is 'Euclid and Jesus' (2012), and he has written several other books on these topics, including 'Cultural Foundations of Mathematics' (2007) and 'Time: Towards a Consistent Theory' (1994). Prof. Raju is firmly committed to a non-Eurocentric view of the world and to the regeneration of 'decolonized' minds. More information is available on his homepage: http://ckraju.net
The interviewer is Claude Alvares, India-based coordinator of the Multiversity Project--inspired and initiated in 2003 by S.M. Mohamed Idris in Penang, Malaysia. One of Multiversity's primary aims is the decolonisation of knowledge and the de-linking of academic teaching and research from its continuing Eurocentric bias. A specific project is the re-writing of a more factual and less biased history of science which highlights and celebrates the scientific contributions of people from across the planet, rather than solely those of Western Europe.

"We found a beautiful statue. Maybe it's one of the most beautiful statues that (was) found dated to the Greek period. The statue is headless, it lost the head, because in the Byzantine time period most of the statues were completely destroyed. All the royal statues that we found in our excavation are without a head, but that statue is made on the Pharonic style completely. It's oversize and I believe it belongs to Batlamous the fourth (King Ptolemy IV), the King who established this temple of Taposiris Magna."

"This is a sacred place. It connects to Isis and Osiris. Also, in the same time there is no evidence that Cleopatra was buried at all in her tomb that she built next to her palace that now existed under the water. And that could be a typical sacred place for the two lovers to be buried inside."

You know the west is the location for the wonder world, for the afterlife. So following the symbolisms of ancient Egyptians I think we have developed very important theory and we have important discoveries."

STORYLINE
Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a headless granite statue of an unidentified Ptolemaic-era king, that is more than 2,000 years old.
An Egyptian-Dominican team made the discovery at the temple of Taposiris Magna, west of the coastal city of Alexandria.
Alexandria was the seat of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, which ruled Egypt for 300 years, until the suicide of Queen Cleopatra.
The statue's height is 53 inches (135 centimetres) and its width at the shoulders is 22 inches (55 centimetres).
"Maybe it's one of the most beautiful statues that (was) found dated to the Greek period," archaeology chief Zahi Hawass said.
Hawass said the statue could belong to King Ptolemy IV and represented the traditional shape of an ancient Egyptian King, wearing collar and kilt.
He added that one of the temple's limestone foundation stones bears traces indicating the entrance was lined with a series of sphinx statues similar to those of the Pharaonic Era.
"Following the symbolisms of ancient Egyptians I think we have developed very important theory and we have important discoveries," archaelogy member Kathleen Martinez said.
The joint mission began its excavation work at Taposiris Magna five years ago in an attempt to locate the tomb of the well-known lovers Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony, as evidence suggests Cleopatra was not buried inside her tomb, built beside her royal palace, which is now under the eastern harbour of Alexandria.
Taposiris Magna was a temple built in the Greek Period close to Alexandria, and it is dedicated to ancient Egyptian God Osiris.
