When it started life as an independent, separate country in 1965, Singapore’s prospects did not look good. Tiny and underdeveloped, it had no natural resources and a population of relatively recent immigrants with little shared history. The country’s first prime minister, the late Lee Kuan Yew is credited with transforming it. He called one volume of his memoirs, “From Third World to First”.
Why did Singapore become an economic success?
First, its strategic location and natural harbour helped. It is at the mouth of the Malacca Strait, through which perhaps 40% of world maritime trade passes. It was an important trading post in the 14th century, and again from the 19th, when British diplomat Sir Stamford Raffles founded the modern city.
Now it is at the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic regions. Under Mr Lee, Singapore made the most of these advantages.
Second, under Mr Lee, Singapore welcomed foreign trade and investment. Multinationals found Singapore a natural hub and were encouraged to expand and prosper.
Third, the government was kept small, efficient and honest—qualities absent in most of Singapore’s neighbours. It regularly tops surveys for the ease of doing business.
But the island city is not ideal. Although clean and orderly, it has harsh judicial punishments, a tame press and illiberal social policies. Homosexual acts, for example, remain illegal. Protest demonstrations are rarely permitted.
Mr Lee saw his authoritarian style of government as an essential ingredient in Singapore’s success, emphasizing the island’s vulnerability in a potentially hostile neighbourhood.
But younger people now question whether Singapore really is that fragile, and resent the restrictions on their freedom.

Raffles' Little Child
The Accidental Nation
Lion City, Asian Tiger
The written history of Singapore dates back to the third century. Later, the Kingdom of Singapura rose in importance during the 14th century under the rule of Srivijayan prince Parameswara and Singapore became an important port, until it was destroyed by Acehnese raiders in 1613. The modern history of Singapore began in 1819 when Englishman Sir Stamford Raffles established a British port on the island. Under British colonial rule, Singapore grew in importance as a centre for both the India-China trade and the entrepôt trade in Southeast Asia, rapidly becoming a major port city.
During World War II, Singapore was conquered and occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1942 to 1945. When the war ended, Singapore reverted to British control, with increasing levels of self-government being granted, culminating in Singapore's merger with the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963. However, social unrest and disputes between Singapore's ruling People's Action Party and Malaysia's Alliance Party resulted in Singapore's separation from Malaysia. Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965.
Facing severe unemployment and a housing crisis, Singapore embarked on a modernization programme beginning in the late 1960s through the 1970s that focused on establishing a manufacturing industry, developing large public housing estates and investing heavily on public education. Since independence, Singapore's economy has grown by an average of nine percent each year. By the 1990s, the country had become one of the world's most prosperous nations, with a highly developed free market economy, strong international trading links, and the highest per capita gross domestic product in Asia outside of Japan.
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the Malay Archipelago was gradually taken over by the European colonial powers, beginning with the arrival of the Portuguese at Malacca in 1509. The early dominance of the Portuguese was challenged during the 17th century by the Dutch, who came to control most of the ports in the region. The Dutch established a monopoly over trade within the archipelago, particularly in spices, then the region's most important product. Other colonial powers, including the British, were limited to a relatively minor presence.
In 1818, Sir Stamford Raffles was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the British colony at Bencoolen. He was determined that Great Britain should replace the Netherlands as the dominant power in the archipelago, since the trade route between China and British India, which had become vitally important with the institution of the opium trade with China, passed through the archipelago. The Dutch had been stifling British trade in the region by prohibiting the British from operating in Dutch-controlled ports or by subjecting them to a high tariff. Raffles hoped to challenge the Dutch by establishing a new port along the Straits of Malacca, the main ship passageway for the India-China trade. He convinced Lord Hastings, the Governor-General of India and his superior at the British East India Company, to fund an expedition to seek a new British base in the region.
Before Raffles arrived, there were around 1,000 people living in Singapore, mostly Malays and a few dozen Chinese. By 1869, due to migration from Malaya and other parts of Asia, Singapore's population had reached 100,000. Many Chinese and Indian immigrants came to Singapore to work in the rubber plantations and tin mines, and their descendents later formed the bulk of Singapore's population.
From a humble beginning to a booming trading post: it is a story of how Singapore went through turbulent years and emerged a modern, cosmopolitan city state. Discovery Channel's "History of Singapore" will piece together the dynamics of the Singapore identity. Footages never seen before and interviews with key figures like Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew -
The Japanese surrendered to the British at the end of World War Two in a room in City Hall. And in 1965, Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was also sworn in there at the City Hall chamber. So it was a fitting venue to launch the new documentary series. From Singapore's beginnings as a mangrove swamp to the Asian economic metropolis it is today, the history of Singapore over the past two centuries is showcased to viewers in a three-hour special. Besides rare historical footage such as the first known map of Singapore after Raffles landed, the documentary also has real-life re-enactments. There will also be interviews with key historical figures recounting turning points in Singapore's past.

Qatar Airways A380 Flight on the new Airbus A350 from Doha to Singapore. It was a 0700hrs departure from Doha and landed in Singapore at 1950 hrs local time.
We were travelling from London to Singapore, with a 45 minute layover in Doha. We had a 45 minute layover in Doha. The transfer was rather rushed, but still do-able. We boarded the aircraft rather late, i.e. almost all the other passengers had boarded.
The plane was new. This flight was rather empty so I had an empty seat beside me. Seat space was decent and the IFE system was modern with a nifty touchscreen.
Service on board was good. Overall, Qatar offers a top notch product. Pity, however, the seat space on the Boeing 787 is terrible - that is for another video review.
This time, let's celebrate the new Airbus A350.
In this video, I also remember the recent earthquake tragedy in Mt Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Several young primary school children and teachers lost their lives, due to falling boulders.

Airbus A380-800 "9V-SKQ"
Economy Class 60K
Welcome to Part II of my April USA trip! The A380 is the worlds largest passenger jet and it has been 7 years since it's first revenue flight. Time for me to log it! I also wanted to try out something exotic as well! Soon I decided to book Singapore Airlines from Frankfurt to New York, part of the 23hour journey from Singapore to New York.
Ratings for Singapore Airlines
Departure: 80%
Aircraft Cleanliness: 80%
Seat Comfort 90%
Crew 90%
Catering 80%
Arrival 70%
Overall: 83%
It isn't a secret to anyone that Singapore Airlines is one of the best airlines in the world. This isn't lied at all, from check in to getting off the plane Singapore provided outstanding service with attention to each detail! SQ serves what you could expect in another carrier's premium cabin! However their IFE system is running behind on carriers like SN and DL as it's a bit harder to operate.

I fly back to Singapore from London. Before the flight, I had a Pucci burger and beer at the Strada Italian Restaurant at Heathrow Terminal 3.
The burger took a while to come, about 20 minutes. But when it came, it was freshly prepared and was delicious. The meal cost GBP 16 [about 25 USD] before tips.
The flight back was good. Smooth. I had a long sleep, even though it was a day flight.
Going by this experience, I think it is better for me to eat before the flight and then I can get more sleep while onboard.
The flight did not go into Ukraine airspace, as you will see in the video. It looked like we were headed to Moscow.
The flight was very smooth and I bought something from Krisshop for my wife.
More pictures on the blog, including some pictures of Strada's menu.

We were off for a holiday! This time, we are flying with Emirates for the first time, flying on the A380. It was going to be a very good experience.
Our destination was London. We would have to fly Singapore to Dubai, have a 2.5 hour layover, before an onward flight from Dubai to London.
The flight from Singapore departed at 9pm local time. We would arrive in Dubai at 0100hrs local time. The flight to London was 0310hrs local time. Flight time from Singapore to Dubai was about 7 hours.
We experienced some delays getting into Dubai because the airspace was congested. Our plane was put on a holding pattern for 30 minutes. Maybe Dubai needs a new runway too!
Check-in at Singapore Airport had long lines. Fortunately, we checked in on-line. The line for online check in was much shorter. Always check-in online before you fly!
I show you a quick meal we had at Terminal 1 Peach Garden Noodle House, as well as various other meal options at Terminal 1.
On board, check out the flight experience, including the meals served on this 7 hour flight. The in-flight entertainment system was simply superb.
This is my first ever flight on Emirates. A most impressive experience in Economy class.
After we landed, during our layover at Dubai International, we tried the burger and fries at Shake Shack - http://youtu.be/ovVNQ-FoYdQ
