Pierre Dumayet: Ahora, me parece que haríamos unas pocas preguntas sobre San Francisco de Asís que es la novela que acaba de publicar. Usted me dijo que escribió este libro por gratitud, porque San Francisco salvó su vida dos veces.
Nikos Kazantzakis: Sí. Yo le debo algo a San Francisco, esto es porque tuve..., tuve el gran deseo de expresar mi gratitud, escribiendo un libro sobre él. La primera vez que salvó mi vida fue durante la ocupación alemana. Los alemanes... Estaba en una pequeña isla, cerca de Atenas; bueno, los alemanes... No teníamos nada para comer. Estaba a punto de morir de hambre. La gente se moría a mi alrededor. Entonces, un día, recibí una carta de un hermano franciscano que vivía en Atenas. Él me dijo: "si usted quisiera traducir la biografía de San Francisco de Asís, escrita por Joergensen, luego, nosotros le enviaríamos una caja con provisiones". Entonces inmediatamente recibí una caja que tenía cosas maravillosas, casi desconocidas, que había olvidado, es decir, azúcar, café, fideos, arroz, etc... Y escribí este libro con un largo prólogo.

Quiero decir, quería pensar en un hombre que fuera capaz de vencer a la muerte, e inmediatamente pensé en San Francisco de Asís. Tenía 40°, 41° grados de fiebre, no sabía cómo. Y cuando vino mi esposa, le dije: "toma la lapicera que yo te dictaré". Y comencé a dictarle San Francisco de Asís. Principalmente, las partes poéticas del libro. Un día, recuerdo, le dije... Porque, saben, este libro no es una biografía, es un resumen de elementos biográficos, poéticos y cosas que San Francisco no dijo, pero habría podido decir, porque corresponden a su personalidad. Entonces, dije a mi esposa: "Toma la lapicera, y escribe". Y le dictaba algo que San Francisco no dijo nunca, pero hubiera podido decir. Un día San Francisco vio un almendro en medio del invierno. Entonces, San Francisco le dijo: "Hermano almendro, háblame de Dios". Y de pronto, el almendro floreció. Esto es muy franciscano, ¿no?

Zorba the Greek is a 1964 film based on the novel Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis.(George Zorbas (c. 1867--1942) (Greek: Γιώργης Ζορμπάς) was the character upon whom Nikos Kazantzakis based his fictional Alexis Zorbas, the protagonist of his novel Zorba the Greek.
He was born in the village of Katafygi, West Pieria, Central Macedonia, (now part of Velventos municipality), in what was then the Ottoman Empire in around 1867. He was the son of Fotios Zorbas, a wealthy landowner and sheep-owner and had three siblings, Katerina, John, and Xenophon. He worked in his fields and flocks in Katafygi, became a woodcutter, and later left for Palaiochori, Chalkidiki, where he spent the most decisive years of his life, 1889--1911. He worked as a miner for a French company in Gisvoro (Γήσβορο) and became friends with the foreman, John Kalkounis (Γιάννης Καλκούνης). He eloped with Kalkounis's daughter Eleni and eventually had eight children. By the end of this period, war and the death of his wife brought great unhappiness to his family.
After all this, he left Palaiochori for Eleftherohori, Pieria, only 8 km from Kolindros, where his brother George, a doctor, lived. In 1915, he decided to become a monk and left for Mount Athos. It was there that he met Kazantzakis and they become close friends. They went to Mani together, where they worked as miners in Prastova. It was their experiences here that Kazantzakis later wrote into The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas, later translated as Zorba the Greek. His eventful life ended in Skopje, present day Republic of Macedonia, where he settled, remarried, and had more children. He died in 1942 and is buried in the Butel cemetery.) The film was directed by Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis and the title character was played by Anthony Quinn. The supporting cast includes Alan Bates, Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas, and Sotiris Moustakas.

En Zorba el Griego, Nikos kazantzakis parece reflexionar sobre las dos fuerzas que luchan en el interior de los seres humanos, cuando estos se enfrantan los dilemas de un cambio. Ni la razón ni la pasión son garantes de los resultados. Una acción intuitiva puede ofrecer exito o fracaso; lo importante parece estar en la conviccion de ir hasta el fin: caminar con gozo las etapas que llevan a un proyecto.

Nikos Kazantzakis (Greek: Νίκος Καζαντζάκης; February 18, 1883 – October 26, 1957) was a Greek writer and philosopher, celebrated for his novel Zorba the Greek, considered his magnum opus. He became known globally after the 1964 release of the Michael Cacoyannis film Zorba the Greek, based on the novel.
When Kazantzakis was born in 1883 in Heraklion, Crete had not yet joined the modern Greek state, (which had been established in 1832) and was still under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. From 1902 Kazantzakis studied law at the University of Athens, then went to Paris in 1907 to study philosophy. Here he fell under the influence of Henri Bergson. His 1909 dissertation was titled "Friedrich Nietzsche on the Philosophy of Right and the State." Upon his return to Greece, he began translating works of philosophy. In 1914 he met Angelos Sikelianos. Together they travelled for two years in places where Greek Orthodox Christian culture flourished, largely influenced by the enthusiastic nationalism of Sikelianos.

This book is not a formal autobiography, but rather a credo, a summing up, by a great artist and thinker, of a lifetime's ideas, work, experiences and his lifes greatest benefactors, as himself admits, his journeys and his dreams. In this superb tome, meant to be read as part metaphor, part autobiography, and part myth, Kazantzakis travels through time and through his soul searching for the roots of his own genius. He describes his early interest in Nietzsche, his apprenticeship with Henri Bergson and the very few men who touched his soul, Homer, Christ, Buddha, Lenin and Zorba. He describes his travels around Greece, Russia in the early days of the revolution, England, Spain, China and Japan and, above all, the agonizing and never-ending process of humanistic and artistic development that culminated in a whole series of inspired masterpieces. From start to finish this book holds your undivided attention and leaves you speechless. The absence of a story-like-plot actually sets you free from any expectations letting you only craving for the surprise of each new page. His marvellous writing is truly pure and honest and flaws smoothly and effortlessly (even its English translation by Peter Bien) yet still is unbelievably spectacular and breathtaking at every step. If I was only allowed to own one book this would be the one I would choose to have. This truly glorious and inspirational work will make you wiser and it will teach you lessons that you will carry along your entire life. This is a book of unfathomable depth. They cross the countryside, encountering colorful Gypsies and avoiding fierce Imperial Cossack troops. The hardships of the journey make Indy homesick, but he won't soon forget his journey with the stubborn old man. Indy's next destination is Greece, where his mother Anna realizes that father and son need to spend more time together. The two bristle at each other's company as they explore the sites of ancient Greece, but Henry finally reaches past Indy's impudence and stubbornness when the topic turns to philosophy and the teachings of Aristotle. A series of misadventures lead them to an isolated monastery perched high on the peak of a mountain. While studying in the library, Indy meets Nikos Kazantzakis, the writer who would some day write Zorba the Greek. Lessons on causality come in handy on the harrowing trip in a tiny cage reeled up a thousand-foot mountainside.

Όταν βρίσκομαι στην Ελλάδα βλέπω τις μικρότητες, τις ίντριγκες, τις ανοησίες, τις ανεπάρκειες των αρχηγών, τη μιζέρια του λαού. Όμως από μακρυά δεν βλέπουμε τόσο ευδιάκριτα την ασκήμια και έχουμε περισσότερη ελευθερία να πλάσουμε μια εικόνα της πατρίδας αντάξια ενός ολοκληρωτικού έρωτα. Pierre Dumayet: Ahora, me parece que haríamos unas pocas preguntas sobre San Francisco de Asís que es la novela que acaba de publicar. Usted me dijo que escribió este libro por gratitud, porque San Francisco salvó su vida dos veces.
Nikos Kazantzakis: Sí. Yo le debo algo a San Francisco, esto es porque tuve..., tuve el gran deseo de expresar mi gratitud, escribiendo un libro sobre él. La primera vez que salvó mi vida fue durante la ocupación alemana. Los alemanes... Estaba en una pequeña isla, cerca de Atenas; bueno, los alemanes... No teníamos nada para comer. Estaba a punto de morir de hambre. La gente se moría a mi alrededor. Entonces, un día, recibí una carta de un hermano franciscano que vivía en Atenas. Él me dijo: "si usted quisiera traducir la biografía de San Francisco de Asís, escrita por Joergensen, luego, nosotros le enviaríamos una caja con provisiones". Entonces inmediatamente recibí una caja que tenía cosas maravillosas, casi desconocidas, que había olvidado, es decir, azúcar, café, fideos, arroz, etc... Y escribí este libro con un largo prólogo.
Pierre Dumayet: ¿Y la segunda vez?
Nikos Kazantzakis: La segunda vez fue cuando estaba muy enfermo, y de pronto, pensé en San Francisco de Asís. Quiero decir, quería pensar en un hombre que fuera capaz de vencer a la muerte, e inmediatamente pensé en San Francisco de Asís. Tenía 40°, 41° grados de fiebre, no sabía cómo. Y cuando vino mi esposa, le dije: "toma la lapicera que yo te dictaré". Y comencé a dictarle San Francisco de Asís. Principalmente, las partes poéticas del libro. Un día, recuerdo, le dije... Porque, saben, este libro no es una biografía, es un resumen de elementos biográficos, poéticos y cosas que San Francisco no dijo, pero habría podido decir, porque corresponden a su personalidad. Entonces, dije a mi esposa: "Toma la lapicera, y escribe". Y le dictaba algo que San Francisco no dijo nunca, pero hubiera podido decir. Un día San Francisco vio un almendro en medio del invierno. Entonces, San Francisco le dijo: "Hermano almendro, háblame de Dios". Y de pronto, el almendro floreció. Esto es muy franciscano, ¿no?

Zorba the Greek is a 1964 film based on the novel Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis.(George Zorbas (c. 1867--1942) (Greek: Γιώργης Ζορμπάς) was the character upon whom Nikos Kazantzakis based his fictional Alexis Zorbas, the protagonist of his novel Zorba the Greek.
He was born in the village of Katafygi, West Pieria, Central Macedonia, (now part of Velventos municipality), in what was then the Ottoman Empire in around 1867. He was the son of Fotios Zorbas, a wealthy landowner and sheep-owner and had three siblings, Katerina, John, and Xenophon. He worked in his fields and flocks in Katafygi, became a woodcutter, and later left for Palaiochori, Chalkidiki, where he spent the most decisive years of his life, 1889--1911. He worked as a miner for a French company in Gisvoro (Γήσβορο) and became friends with the foreman, John Kalkounis (Γιάννης Καλκούνης). He eloped with Kalkounis's daughter Eleni and eventually had eight children. By the end of this period, war and the death of his wife brought great unhappiness to his family.
After all this, he left Palaiochori for Eleftherohori, Pieria, only 8 km from Kolindros, where his brother George, a doctor, lived. In 1915, he decided to become a monk and left for Mount Athos. It was there that he met Kazantzakis and they become close friends. They went to Mani together, where they worked as miners in Prastova. It was their experiences here that Kazantzakis later wrote into The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas, later translated as Zorba the Greek. His eventful life ended in Skopje, present day Republic of Macedonia, where he settled, remarried, and had more children. He died in 1942 and is buried in the Butel cemetery.) The film was directed by Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis and the title character was played by Anthony Quinn. The supporting cast includes Alan Bates, Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas, and Sotiris Moustakas.

Following to this clip I will post a series of video-clips with gems taken from Nikos Kazantzakis last book Report to Greco.
This book is not a formal autobiography, but rather a credo, a summing up, by a great artist and thinker, of a lifetime's ideas, work, experiences and his lifes greatest benefactors, as himself admits, his journeys and his dreams.
In this superb tome, meant to be read as part metaphor, part autobiography, and part myth, Kazantzakis travels through time and through his soul searching for the roots of his own genius. He describes his early interest in Nietzsche, his apprenticeship with Henri Bergson and the very few men who touched his soul, Homer, Christ, Buddha, Lenin and Zorba. He describes his travels around Greece, Russia in the early days of the revolution, England, Spain, China and Japan and, above all, the agonizing and never-ending process of humanistic and artistic development that culminated in a whole series of inspired masterpieces.
From start to finish this book holds your undivided attention and leaves you speechless. The absence of a story-like-plot actually sets you free from any expectations letting you only craving for the surprise of each new page. His marvellous writing is truly pure and honest and flaws smoothly and effortlessly (even its English translation by Peter Bien) yet still is unbelievably spectacular and breathtaking at every step. His scenery descriptions are so astoundingly realistic that at times is as if you are standing right there, next to him, joined by the scents of his beloved Greek country side, olive trees and pine mixed with thyme and salt from the sea. If I was to parallel his writing to painting it would certainly be to Van Goghs or his grandfather, El Greco.
His strength though, lies to his thoughts. Oh, his thoughts, his wisdom, his humanism, his sweetness. Perhaps the kindest soul ever lived. In these spiritually austere times, his work is praise to the beauty man has inside. At times he makes you cry at the beauty and wonder of being alive as at other he makes you ache for loved ones who are gone, and cry at our ultimate fate, death, in the face of which we must live with ever more Zorba-like passion.
If I was only allowed to own one book this would be the one I would choose to have.
This truly glorious and inspirational work will make you wiser and it will teach you lessons that you will carry along your entire life. This is a book of unfathomable depth. It's definitely a life-changer!

Όσο πιο μακρυά είμαστε από την πατρίδα μας, τόσο περισσότερο τη σκεφτόμαστε και τόσο περισσότερο, την αγαπάμε. Όταν βρίσκομαι στην Ελλάδα βλέπω τις μικρότητες, τις ίντριγκες, τις ανοησίες, τις ανεπάρκειες των αρχηγών, τη μιζέρια του λαού. Όμως από μακρυά δεν βλέπουμε τόσο ευδιάκριτα την ασκήμια και έχουμε περισσότερη ελευθερία να πλάσουμε μια εικόνα της πατρίδας αντάξια ενός ολοκληρωτικού έρωτα. Να γιατί δουλεύω καλύτερα και αγαπώ καλύτερα την Ελλάδα όταν βρίσκομαι στο εξωτερικό. Μακρυά της καταφέρνω να συλλάβω καλύτερα την ουσία της και την αποστολή της στον κόσμο, και συνακόλουθα τη δική μου ταπεινή αποστολή. Κάτι ιδιαίτερο συμβαίνει στους Έλληνες που ζουν στο εξωτερικό. Γίνονται καλύτεροι. Έχουν την περηφάνεια της φυλής τους, νιώθουν ότι όντας Έλληνες έχουν την ευθύνη να είναι αντάξιοι των προγόνων τους. H πεποίθησή τους, ότι κατάγονται από τον Πλάτωνα και τον Περικλή, μπορεί ίσως να είναι μια ουτοπία, μια αυθυποβολή χιλιετιών, όμως αυτή η αυθυποβολή, γενόμενη πίστη, ασκεί μια γόνιμη επίδραση στη νεοελληνική ψυχή. Χάρη σ' αυτή την ουτοπία επέζησαν οι Έλληνες. Μετά από τόσους αιώνες εισβολών, σφαγών, λιμών, θα έπρεπε να έχουν εξαφανιστεί. Όμως η ουτοπία, που έγινε πίστη, δεν τους αφήνει να πεθάνουν. Όσο πιο μακρυά είμαστε από την πατρίδα μας, τόσο περισσότερο τη σκεφτόμαστε και τόσο περισσότερο, την αγαπάμε. Όταν βρίσκομαι στην Ελλάδα βλέπω τις μικρότητες, τις ίντριγκες, τις ανοησίες, τις ανεπάρκειες των αρχηγών, τη μιζέρια του λαού. Όμως από μακρυά δεν βλέπουμε τόσο ευδιάκριτα την ασκήμια και έχουμε περισσότερη ελευθερία να πλάσουμε μια εικόνα της πατρίδας αντάξια ενός ολοκληρωτικού έρωτα. Να γιατί δουλεύω καλύτερα και αγαπώ καλύτερα την Ελλάδα όταν βρίσκομαι στο εξωτερικό. Μακρυά της καταφέρνω να συλλάβω καλύτερα την ουσία της και την αποστολή της στον κόσμο, και συνακόλουθα τη δική μου ταπεινή αποστολή. Κάτι ιδιαίτερο συμβαίνει στους Έλληνες που ζουν στο εξωτερικό. Γίνονται καλύτεροι. Έχουν την περηφάνεια της φυλής τους, νιώθουν ότι όντας Έλληνες έχουν την ευθύνη να είναι αντάξιοι των προγόνων τους. H πεποίθησή τους, ότι κατάγονται από τον Πλάτωνα και τον Περικλή, μπορεί ίσως να είναι μια ουτοπία, μια αυθυποβολή χιλιετιών, όμως αυτή η αυθυποβολή, γενόμενη πίστη, ασκεί μια γόνιμη επίδραση στη νεοελληνική ψυχή. Χάρη σ' αυτή την ουτοπία επέζησαν οι Έλληνες. Μετά από τόσους αιώνες εισβολών, σφαγών, λιμών, θα έπρεπε να έχουν εξαφανιστεί. Όμως η ουτοπία, που έγινε πίστη, δεν τους αφήνει να πεθάνουν. H Ελλαδα επιζεί ακόμα, επιζεί νομίζω μέσα από διαδοχικά θαύματα.

Ένας πραγματικός μυθιστοριογράφος δεν μπορεί παρά να ζει μέσα στην πραγματικότητα του καιρού του και, ζώντας αυτή την πραγματικότητα, συνειδητοποιεί την ευθύνη του. Προσπαθεί λοιπόν να βοηθά τους ομοίους του, ν' αντιμετωπίζει και να λύνει, κατά το δυνατόν, τα πιεστικά προβλήματα της εποχής του. Το λογοτεχνικό έργο σήμερα, αν καθρεφτίζει την εποχή μας, είναι αναγκαστικά μια από τις πιο λεπτές και πιο αποτελεσματικές μορφές δράσης. Ή μάλλον μπορεί το ίδιο να γίνει το σπέρμα της δράσης. O μυθιστοριογράφος εφόσον συνειδητοποιεί την αποστολή του, προσπαθεί να σπρώξει την πραγματικότητα να πάρει τη μορφή που κρίνει ως την πιο ταιριαστή στον ανθρωπο. Σας διαπερνά μόλις πατήσετε την Κρητική γη. Ύστερα ένα άλλο συναίσθημα, πιο συγκεκριμένο, σας καταλαμβάνει. Όποιος γνωρίζει την τραγική ιστορία των τελευταίων αιώνων αυτού του νησιού καθηλώνεται όταν αναλογίζεται το λυσσαλέο αγώνα πάνω σ' αυτή τη γη ανάμεσα στον άνθρωπο που μάχεται για την ελευθερία του και στον καταπιεστή που μαίνεται για να τον συνθλίψει. Οι Κρητικοί αυτοί έχουν τόσο εξοικειωθεί με το θάνατο που δεν τον φοβούνται πια. Υπέφεραν τόσο επί αιώνες, διαπίστωσαν τόσες φορές ότι ο ίδιος ο θάνατος δεν μπορεί να τους καταβάλει, που έφτασαν στη διαπίστωση ότι ο θάνατος είναι απαραίτητος για το θρίαμβο του ιδανικού τους, ότι στην κορυφή της απελπισίας αρχίζει η σωτηρία. Ναι, είναι δύσκολο να τη μασήσεις την αλήθεια. Αλλά οι Κρητικοί, σκληραγωγημένοι από τον αγώνα, λαίμαργοι για ζωή, την καταπίνουν σαν ένα ποτήρι δροσερό νερό. «Πώς σου φάνηκε η ζωή, παππού;» ρώτησα μια μέρα ένα γέρο Κρητικό, εκατοχρονίτη, γεμάτο παλιές πληγές, τυφλό. Ζεσταίνονταν στον ήλιο, κουκουβιστός στο κατώφλι της καλύβας του. Ήταν περήφανος στ' αυτιά, όπως λέμε στην Κρήτη. Δεν άκουε καλά. Τού επανέλαβα την ερώτηση: «Πώς σου φάνηκε η μεγάλη σου ζωή, τα εκατό σου χρόνια, παππού; Σαν ένα ποτήρι δροσερό νερό» μου απάντησε. «Και διψάς ακόμα παππού;» Σήκωσε απότομα το χέρι. «Καταραμένος αυτός που πια δε διψάει» φώναξε. Αυτοί είναι οι Κρητικοί. Πώς να μη τους κάνω σύμβολο;

O συγγραφέας σήμερα, εφόσον μένει πιστός στην αποστολή του, είναι ένας μαχητής.

Αυτά τα λόγια του μεγάλου Κρητικού συνοψίζουν καθαρά την αγάπη του για τα ταξίδια. Από μικρή ηλικία και μέχρι το θάνατό του, δε σταμάτησε να ταξιδεύει στην Ευρώπη, την Αφρική και την Ασία. Μέσα από αναγνώσεις υπό τη συνοδεία μουσικής, θα ανακαλύψουμε μια λιγότερο γνωστή πλευρά του έργου του, τον «Καζαντζάκη ως ταξιδευτή στη Νότια Ευρώπη: στην Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα, την Ιταλία, τη Γαλλία και την Ισπανία».
