Mandarin/Eng/Nat
A row over free trade and concerns over global money melt down have dominated the opening session of the 1998 APEC economic summit in Malaysia.
Japan is refusing to take part in tariff cuts in two key sectors and is already at odds with the U-S-A.
Street protests over the trial of Malaysia's former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on corruption and sex crimes, threaten to overshadow the main leaders' summit.
As the good ship APEC docks in Malaysia for the annual 21 leaders' summit an economic storm is blowing through Asia as never before.
The Kuala Lumpur get-together is about halting a world-wide money melt down whilst trying to bale out Asian economies, already sinking fast.
But the Malaysian summit is also facing another issue.
In a courtroom in downtown Kuala Lumpur, the country's former Deputy Prime Minister
Anwar Ibrahim is on trial for corruption and alleged sexual misconduct.
His former boss - Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad - is blamed by Anwar supporters for conducting a politically motivated vendetta against him.
The case has led to street protests and claims by demonstrators of heavy-handed policing.
Anwar's wife Azizah Ismail is leading the movement to have him freed from what she believes are trumped-up charges.
She has this message for APEC leaders:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Help - to speak the concerns about what is happening in our country. My husband's case is a test case for justice".
SUPER CAPTION: Azizah Ismail, Anwar's wife
For the Pro-democracy movement the issue is wider than just the jailing of the former deputy premier.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The issue is democracy. It is not so much Anwar and the rights to expressions, the rights to opinion as well as the right for demanding reforms for the political system, economic system."
SUPER CAPTION: Tien Shun, Pro-democracy movement leader
As security tightens around the APEC meeting venue, rumours abound of an escalation of the Pro-Anwar protests.
Leaders have been told they cannot visit Anwar in prison, but his wife may actively try to
meet some of them.
Heads of State arrive later this week.
For now senior officials are trying to work to put the Asian economies back on track.
Trade liberalisation may top the agenda, but its the region's economic woes which will dominate it.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"The most important issue at the moment is the economic crisis in the region. As for Taiwan, we have always believed we are capable and willing of giving assistance, because this economic crisis has affected the whole region."
SUPER CAPTION: Andrew Hsai, Taiwanese Ministry of Industry Director General
No one in Kuala Lumpur this week doubts the breadth or depth of the crisis, but APEC nations differ on the best way out of what, for some countries, is full-blown recession.
The United States and the International Monetary Fund want to pave a free-market road to recovery, but Malaysia's host Premier says that approach has failed.
Mahathir wants currency controls to keep speculators away from Malaysia's money markets.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Our Prime Minister (Mahathir Mohamad) has often lamented about the free flow of capital and this so-called unbridled movement causing havoc to many markets, many economies. So I think the fact we are championing this - which also is in concert with the view of a lot of leading world economists - seems to suggest that it is very
much part of Kuala Lumpur's agenda".
SUPER CAPTION: Abdul Razak, Director General Malaysian Industry Ministry
The old chestnut of lifting trade barriers is also again fuelling the fires.

U-S Vice President Al Gore promised stricken Asian economies 10 (b) billion U-S dollars in aid, but enraged the Malaysian government by praising the country's dissidents.
In a speech before Asian leaders and businessmen, Gore praised the democracy movement's attempts to gain political reform ahead of the APEC summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Later, Malaysian trade minister Rafidah Aziz said it was an unashamed attempt to intervene into domestic politics.
Gore joined APEC a number of leaders from across the spectrum of 21 member nations for a dinner with businessmen.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Democracy confers a stamp of legitimacy that reforms must have in order to be effective. And so,among nations suffering economic crises, we continue to hear calls for democracy, calls for 'reformasi'. We hear them today - right here, right now among the
brave people of Malaysia".
SUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, U-S Vice President
Gore's words were heard by Malaysian Premier Mahathir Mohamad who hosted the banquet.
He's already rebuked the U-S for interfering in what he believes are Malaysian domestic affairs.
Gore also concentrated on the economic crisis afflicting Asia
SOUNDBITE: (English)
" This much is clear, just as the global financial crisis started here in Asia the economic recovery can and must start in Asia as well. Tonight I challenge the Asian Pacific nations to lead the way."
SUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, U-S Vice President
Gore spoke of the importance of Japan in economic recovery.
America and Japan have announced a proposal to pump billions of dollars into troubled Asian economies.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I am pleased to announce that in addition to the 5 (b) billion U-S dollars in short and medium-term trade financing that our Export-Import Bank made available in the wake of the crisis, it will now provide an additional 1(b) billion U-S dollars in medium-term financing each for Indonesia, Thailand and Korea, to augment the existing short-term programs in these countries and help them meet their needs while at the same time encouraging trade between our nations. I am also pleased to announced that our Overseas Private Investment Corporation will provide over 2 (b) billion U-S dollars in insurance and financing to support new private investment in Asia, and will create innovative new financing products to bring more private capital to this region."
SUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, U-S Vice President
Gore enraged the Malaysian leadership with his speech.
Trade Minister Rafidah Aziz accused Gore of an unabashed intervention into local affairs.
Meanwhile, riot police were deployed on the streets round the capital's trade centre along with water canons and pepper spray to control anti-Mahathir demonstrations.
The heavy security was designed to keep any demonstrations away from even the earshot of Gore.
Gore is in Malaysia standing in for President Bill Clinton who chose to stay at home and deal with the Iraqi crisis.

The leaders of the 21 member APEC have arrived at a Gala Dinner being hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
The meeting has already been overshadowed by a speech made by U-S Vice President Al Gore, who backed recent protests in Malaysia calling for nationwide reform.
And unrest in the host country has continued, with protesters staging a demonstration in which they demanded reform.
Chinese President Jiang Zemin was among the first to arrive at the Mandarin Oriental hotel for the APEC Gala dinner.
The banquet follows the first day of talks between leaders at the APEC summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov and New Zealand's Prime Minister Jenny Shipley were also in attendance, along with U-S Vice President Al Gore.
The summit has been overshadowed by the row over Al Gore's speech to the APEC Business Advisory Council on Monday evening.
In that speech Gore said he backed Malaysian protestors' calls for reform in the country.
The speech angered the government of the host nation.
To prevent any protests during the APEC summit - more than one-thousand officers blocked off roads to and from the Mandarin Hotel, where the government leaders were having dinner.
A water cannon truck stood by in case of trouble.
And as the leaders were entertained by traditional dancers, a protest got underway outside, despite the heavy police presence.
Crowds of protesters, some masked, chanted for Mahathir to step down and burned a T-shirt bearing his name.
Others carried posters of the Malaysian Prime Minister's jailed former deputy Anwar Ibrahim.
Above the demonstration site a police helicopter hovered.

STORYLINE:
US President George W Bush has welcomed Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to the White House for an update on the anti-terrorism campaign.
Earlier Mahathir launched the Malaysia Trade, Security and Economic Cooperation Caucus at Capitol Hill.
During his trip, Mahathir has brushed off concerns about human rights violations and said his Southeast Asian nation will move toward democracy at its own pace. Mahathir had long been controversial because of his jailing in 1998 of his former deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim.
The Malaysian leader, who prompted questions about human rights violations after the 1998 jailing of his former deputy prime minister, is enjoying newly warm ties with Washington because of his help in the war against terrorism.
Mahathir, now praised for his moderate Muslim views, also has seen his country's military ties with the US increase to an all-time high.
Since September 11, Malaysia has arrested more than 60 suspected Islamic militants with alleged ties to al-Qaida, including a former army captain accused of letting two of the September 11 hijackers meet in his apartment in 2000.
During a photo-op in the White house, President Bush thanked the Malaysian leader for his support in the Americans' war against terror.

Wow ! Malaysia Anggap Presiden Jokowi DEWA PENYELAMAT ! Proton Selamat Dari Kematian !

8 Februari 2015

MALAYSIA: PM MAHATIR READY TO TESTIFY IN ANWAR TRIAL

English/Nat
Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says he is ready to testify in the sex trial of his ousted deputy Anwar Ibrahim, even though he claims forcing him into the witness box would be a "political stunt".
Anwar was sacked in September 1998 and tried for corruption - he is currently serving six years in prison.
He now has to answer charges of sodomy, which is a crime in Malaysia, and could mean his sentence is extended by 20 years.
The High Court judge presiding over the sodomy trial will decide whether Mahatir must give evidence after he hears arguments from both the defence and prosecution teams.
Anwar Ibrahim was back in court in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, as his trial on charges of sodomy continued.
Anwar claims that his six year prison sentence from the corruption charge and now the claims that he sodomised his driver, all result from a political conspiracy launched by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to destroy Anwar's political career.
Anwar says the prime minister saw him as a challenge to his 18-year rule.
And his defence wants Mahathir to answer their questions about all the allegations he has made against their client.
But prosecutors have cited a rarely used law to argue that Mahathir's testimony would not be relevant.
Judge Ariffin said at the close of Wednesday's hearing that the prime minister should be prepared to come to the court at any time.
He is expected to give a definitive ruling after hearing arguments from both defence and prosecution lawyers.
Mahathir says he is willing to testify in the court case but accuses Anwar's defence team of trying to mount a "political stunt".
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I wouldn't like this to be a kind of political stunt. I hope it is relevant to the case. If it is not relevant to the case and they just want to make a political show of it then I don't think it is being very fair."
Question: "Do you think it is necessary at all, in your opinion?"
Answer: "I don't think it is necessary. I don't know much about these things, but I think all the evidence has already been given, but apparently there is some political nuisance in the desire to put me on the stand."
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister
Dozens of people have been gathering at the courthouse trying to get a seat in the public gallery, hoping to see Mahathir come face-to-face with Anwar for the first time since he was sacked.
Anwar's defence attorney, Karpal Singh, has accused Mahathir of setting a bad example by "dragging his feet" about
giving testimony.
He told reporters that a court appearance by the leader would send a message about the fairness of Malaysia's judiciary.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"In this country even the King can be taken to court. And if the King is taken to the court, a special court, the King has to come. And Mahathir is no king."
SUPER CAPTION: Karapal Singh, Head of Anwar's Defence Team
Anwar and his adopted brother are accused of forcing Anwar's former family driver, Azizan Abu Bakar, to have sex with them between January and March 1993.
Azizan has accused Anwar of repeatedly sodomising him, claiming he became Anwar's "sex slave".
A defence witness has testified that Azizan and others were paid money by Mahathir's political secretary to falsify the allegations.

English/Nat
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad arrived in Jakarta on Thursday at the head of a large government and business delegation for a two-day visit designed to strengthen political and economic ties with Indonesia.
He was greeted at Jakarta's main air force base by President Abdurrahman Wahid and Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab.
Following a meeting with Wahid, the Malaysian prime minister gave his support to Indonesia's policy toward the unrest in the Aceh province.
It was Mahathir's first visit to Indonesia since Wahid became president last October, after the country's first free election in 44 years.
The visit is expected to focus on ways to overcome the effects of the Asian financial crisis, which devastated the Indonesian economy.
Mahathir was accompanied by Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar, Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin and the ministers of international trade and primary industry.
The business delegation is headed by Malaysian Airlines System chairman Tajudin Ramli and includes a number of prominent businessmen.
Malaysia is the 11th largest investor in Indonesia, with total investments amounting to about 7.6 (b) billion U-S dollars.
Other issues were on the agenda for the meeting including the ongoing unrest in the Aceh province of Indonesia.
Mahathir offered his support to the Indonesian government.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Malaysia at the moment is quite willing to be of some help if we are asked to and in fact we have met some of the religious leaders of Aceh - I have personally met them - and have explained to them that our stand is that Aceh should be, remain as a part of Indonesia. They may want to have more autonomy, that is up to them to negotiate."
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohammed, Malaysian Prime Minister
A joint concern for both countries is the haze rising from bush fires on Sumatra.
There are worries that the unrelenting heat and smoke from the fires will produce a thick haze that will drift across to neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia.
Indonesia says that forest fires blazing in Sumatra, and West Kalimantan in Borneo, have reached "emergency level."
Wahid welcomed Malaysia's input into the process of fighting the fires.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I gave instructions at the cabinet meeting for us to take necessary actions to combat this thing. In that sense I am very glad to know also that Malaysia has taken the step of monitoring the preparation for combatting the fires."
SUPER CAPTION: Abdurrahman Wahid, President of Indonesia
But it's the economy which is set to dominate the discussions.
Indonesia's new president is said to have been impressed by Mahathir's determination to devise his own recovery policies and reject International Monetary Fund's involvement in the process.
Indonesia's attempts to revive its economy, which nose-dived by 17 per cent at the height of the crisis in 1998, are heavily dependent on a multi (b) billion U-S dollar I-M-F-led rescue package.
In contrast, Mahathir rejected I-M-F aid and advice in dealing with the crisis.
Instead, he imposed strict capital controls that were criticized by the I-M-F, U-S officials and Western economists.
Malaysia has declared that the controls, which temporarily restricted foreigners from repatriating their investments, succeeded in stabilising the country's economy.
In a report released in January, the I-M-F conceded that the controls gave Malaysian authorities some "breathing space" to address economic problems and implement reforms.
However, the I-M-F's bailout programmes are credited with helping Thailand and South Korea overcome their worst recession in decades.

STORYLINE:
US President George W Bush met Southeast Asian leaders Friday on the sidelines of the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit in Busan, South Korea, to urge them to use their influence on the military junta in Myanmar.
Officials did not immediately comment after the meeting.
But the top bureaucrat at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) said ahead of the meeting that the fresh bid to coax ASEAN leaders to pressure Myanmar to accelerate democratic reforms would not persuade the group to change its non-confrontational approach toward the regime.
Ong Keng Yong, ASEAN's Secretary-General, told The Associated Press that Southeast Asian governments will continue to engage Myanmar and avoid doing anything that might prompt it to withdraw from the group.
Seven of ASEAN's ten leaders are attending the APEC forum.
Myanmar is not among APEC's 21 members. Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are in both groups. Cambodia and Laos round out ASEAN's membership.
Leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region will meet to promote free trade, unite in efforts to combat bird flu and agree to keep up the vigil against terrorism at the annual summit.
The leaders are set to endorse a statement agreed upon earlier this week by APEC ministers that aims to foster progress in World Trade Organisation talks set for next month in Hong Kong.

MALAYSIA: PRIME MINISTER MAHATHIR ATTACKS HIS SACKED DEPUTY ANWAR

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has attacked his sacked deputy as immoral and accused him of courting arrest to become a political martyr.
Anwar Ibrahim was stripped of his posts of deputy and finance minister last week on allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to leaking state secrets.
Mahathir's former protege has denied the charges, saying they were crafted by the government to undermine his reform challenge to Mahathir's 17-year rule.
Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has stepped up verbal attacks against his former protege Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar was sacked last week as both Finance Minster and Deputy Prime Minster.
Mahathir said Anwar was dumped from his posts and expelled from the ruling party on moral grounds - and not for allegations of selling state secrets or differences over monetary policy.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And I was convinced and I consider that he was not qualified to lead the country not because of his differences with me over politics or over economic practice but because his character does not qualify him to become leader of a country like Malaysia."
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia
Mahathir said he had conducted his own probe into the sexual misconduct allegations after he learned of the police investigation.
With plenty of enemies, asked Mahathir, why would I do this to a friend?
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What I say is based on facts. I don't do this to a person who has literally been brought up by me to succeed me -- my friend, why should I do it to him? I have lots of enemies, I would like to do that with my enemies, but I don't choose my friend and I don't choose an accusation that is so difficult to explain that's so difficult for people to accept."
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia
Anwar responded to Mahathir's comments with anger.
Since the sackings, Anwar has been giving nightly speeches at his home, declaring his innocence.
He has also pledged to go on a campaign to push for press freedoms and
transparency within the government - reportedly infuriating the 72-year-old Mahathir.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I was thinking of retiring this year, I went off last year in 1997 to give him a chance to lead the country and .. but for this economic problem I would have stepped down. Unfortunately I think I need to stay back to lend some of my experience towards the resolution of this problem."
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia
He insisted no mistakes had been made over Anwar.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I'm satisfied with the way I have handled it because I have given him every chance to resign so that these matters do not come to this stage but he preferred to fight and he maintains that he is innocent so now he has to prove his innocence."
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia
Mahathir said Anwar's calls for a reform movement were a diversion against the investigation.
He said there was "not a hope" that Anwar could be rehabilitated.

The 1996 APEC summit ended Monday amid a mixed bag of bilateral progress and multilateral sniping.
The highlights included a tariff elimination proposal, minor progress on China's WTO bid and agreement on adding two new members to the group.
It was a quiet scene outside the Philippine International Convention Centre, where most of the A-P-E-C conference was held.
Inside, member nations scrambled to put out their opinions on a variety of issues.
An agreement on tariff elimination for telecommunications and computers was on the top of most agendas.
But the subject of China's application for membership to the World Trade Organization was also a hot topic.
Hashimoto's made a bold statement at a concluding press conference that put the US in the hot seat.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
"It's important to establish the stability of the Asia Pacific region therefore, we insisted China's early entry into the WTO. It's for China itself but more for the stability of world economy."
SUPER CAPTION: Ryutaro Hashimoto Japanese Prime Minister
Chinese president Jiang Zemin appeared pleased with the afternoon's meetings, although no agreement with the U-S on W-T-O was forthcoming.
With a growing number of nations supporting China's admission, however, the U-S is increasingly under pressure to make something happen by early next year.
China, though, says there is no linkage between its W-T-O situation and other diplomatic moves announced during the conference.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"There is no direct link between the date of the state visits by heads of state of china and the United states and the date of China's entry into WTO."
SUPER CAPTION: Qian Qichen Chinese Foreign Minister
Australia was relieved that A-P-E-C members did not pressure it to silence anti-Asian legislator Pauline Hanson.
Despite the animosity Hanson stirred up with Asians at home, prime minister Howard said he had a successful round of bilateral meetings.
He did, however, admit the relationship with China has been on a less than smooth road recently.
SOUNDBITE:
"We are not starting from the point of view that our relationship is in tatters or anything like that. There has been a few trimmer and a few harsh words expressed but that happens and I take a great deal of encouragement from the discussion I had yesterday with the president and like I said at the news conference yesterday, he's concluding remarks in english were it's much better face to face isn't it."
SUPER CAPTION: John Howard Prime Minister, Australia
Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammad Mahathir answered a pointed question about his government's dealings with Indonesia on the issue of human rights.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We did not discuss anything on human rights. But as far as President Suharto is concerned, he said thank you to me the moment he saw me and that is to be expected."
SUPER CAPTION: Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammad Mahathir
Things might be very friendly between Malaysia and Indonesia, but one US official let loose a scathing attack on several unnamed countries in Asia that the Americans feel are undemocratic.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We've seen the direction generally this region is going and it is underlined by the trip here to the Philippines where economic growth goes hand in hand with democracy despite what some other Asia leaders say. You'll see that again in Thailand, thank you."
SUPER CAPTION: Winston Lord Ambassador to the US
The American statement was kind of strange way to wrap up a forum that was designed to highlight the agreement between members.

Has CAPITALISM lost its 'MORAL' compass? APEC summit RUSSIA 2012 Debate PART 2
Has capitalism lost its compass? How should capitalism be defined? How flawed is the system and could it still be revived? And is there any real alternative to capitalism? Peter Lavelle is discussing these issues with his distinguished panelists at the APEC 2012 summit hold in Vladivostok. Jim Rogers and Artyom Volynets are there to defend capitalism in its modern form, while Chandran Nair and Frank-Jurgen Richter are arguing that capitalism has indeed lost its compass.
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC was established in 1989 to enhance economic growth and prosperity for the region and to strengthen the Asia-Pacific community.
As of now, APEC has 21 members - Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; People's Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; The Republic of the Philippines; The Russian Federation; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; United States of America; Viet Nam - which account for approximately 41% of the world's population, approximately 55% of world GDP and about 49% of world trade.
24th APEC Summit will be held in the city of Vladivostok, Russian Federation.

Capitalism is an economic system that is based on private ownership of the means of production and the creation of goods or services for profit. Other elements central to capitalism include competitive markets, wage labor and capital accumulation. There are multiple variants of capitalism, including laissez-faire, welfare capitalism and state capitalism. Capitalism is considered to have been applied in a variety of historical cases, varying in time, geography, politics, and culture. There is general agreement that capitalism became dominant in the Western world following the demise of feudalism. Competitive markets may also be found in market-based alternatives to capitalism such as market socialism and co-operative economics.
Economists, political economists and historians have taken different perspectives on the analysis of capitalism. Economists usually emphasize the degree to which government does not have control over markets (laissez faire), as well as the importance of property rights. Most political economists emphasize private property as well, in addition to power relations, wage labor, class, and the uniqueness of capitalism as a historical formation. The extent to which different markets are free, as well as the rules defining private property, is a matter of politics and policy. Many states have what are termed mixed economies, referring to the varying degree of planned and market-driven elements in a state's economic system. A number of political ideologies have emerged in support of various types of capitalism, the most prominent being economic liberalism.
The term capitalism gradually spread throughout the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries largely through the writings of Karl Marx

Malaysia's police chief says sacked deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim tried to interfere with a criminal investigation against him.
He said that police were investigating four new reports accusing Anwar of tampering with evidence and intimidating witnesses.
Since Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and finance minister on Wednesday, he has been dogged by allegations of sexual misconduct and leaking state secrets.
The sacking followed months of disagreement over economic policies with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad -- once assumed to be grooming Anwar for the top post.
Anwar Ibrahim, who was sacked from the two posts of deputy prime minister and finance minister of Malaysia on Wednesday by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
He's said he'll keep in politics -- possibly setting up a splinter group of the ruling party or even joining the opposition.
Here he's welcoming Lim Kit Siang, the opposition leader of Parliament and his one-time chief antagonist, into his home.
Anwar's sacking should worry all Malaysians, said Lim.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"If the second highest post in the country, the Deputy Prime Minister in the country cannot get justice then I think we should worry about how Malaysians can get justice."
SUPER CAPTION: Lim Kit Siang, opposition leader of Malaysian Parliament
Lim later emerged from a closed-door meeting and called for an emergency Parliament session to be convened to discuss Anwar's plight.
However, he denied that Anwar was planning to align himself with Malaysia's opposition
forces.
Mahathir sacked Anwar following months of disagreements over the economy.
Foreign minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is a loyal supporter of Mahathir.
Abdullah, who's among the front-runners for the vacant deputy prime minister position, told Anwar to seek justice in the courts if he felt he'd been victimised.
Anwar was a hypocrite, implied Abdullah.
He'd enjoyed the perks of power and now was turning against the government.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It is going to give the wrong impression to the people about the situation in Malaysia. He is perhaps trying to use this campaign as one for reform. I do not know what reforms he is talking about. He has been in the government for so long. He has been enjoying the position of deputy prime minister and all the perks and everything for 10 years. What has he been doing? He must have failed."
SUPER CAPTION: Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysian Foreign Minister
Mahathir must have had a reason to sack Anwar, he said.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I do not believe that Mahathir would want to play politics with his deputy. But something has happened, obviously, there must be something, I am convinced there must be something that has convinced Mahathir that some action has to be taken even at a time when we are facing economic difficulties."
SUPER CAPTION: Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysian Foreign Minister
With the country in economic difficulties, Malaysians should be pulling together to solve them, said the foreign minister.
And, he added, Anwar shouldn't politicise his sacking and stir up public sympathy from the streets.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This actually is irresponsible. He fully knows that this is the time that we are facing economic problems and is the time when we need political stability and all of us should be together to support efforts for economic recovery. And yet, he is looking for support to solve his problems. Obviously, it is his problem. He is taking the matter to the streets, taking matters to the ordinary people, giving his version of what he did. He says he knows there are others who are out to destroy his political career."

STORYLINE:
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad predicted on Monday that international opposition to the U-S-led bombing campaign on Afghanistan will widen beyond Muslim countries as civilian casualties mount.
Mahathir spoke a day after failing to persuade other Southeast Asian leaders to include a call to halt the bombing in a joint declaration against terrorism ahead of their annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, which formally opened in Brunei on Monday.
He told a news conference that he would press forward with calls for an international conference on terrorism and hoped ASEAN would back him in the final summit statement.
Mahathir said that the summit leaders had talked about the "ineffectiveness of attacking Afghanistan" because of the resulting civilian casualties.
He remarked that the attacks continued to anger Muslims and would not in themselves succeed in combatting all the world's terrorists as not all were in Afghanistan.
The joint statement, delivered by summit host Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, condemned the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon as an "attack against humanity and an assault on all of us".
It laid out the groundwork for closer co-operation to fight terrorism, declaring that international terrorism posed serious threats both for international peace and the region's economy, but made no mention of Afghanistan.

MALAYSIA: KUALA LUMPUR: PARLIAMENT TO BE DISSOLVED

English/Nat
Malaysia's prime minister announced on Wednesday that he will dissolve Parliament to pave the way for an election soon after November 26th.
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Parliament will be dissolved on Thursday and the election will be held before the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins the second week of December.
It's likely to be the most widely contested general election Malaysia has seen in three decades.
It's been a difficult tenure for Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, the culmination of which has been his falling out with former deputy Anwar Ibrahim.
On Wednesday, the Malaysian premier announced he would test public opinion of his performance by dissolving parliament and paving the way for elections.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"An announcement that the government has decided to dissolve parliament from tomorrow on Thursday, 11th November in order to enable general elections to be held."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister
The polls are expected to be the most widely contested in decades, as Mahathir's dominant United Malays National Organisation has been deeply divided since the firing of deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in September 1998.
Dr Mahathir laughed when asked whether this election would be a popularity vote between himself and Anwar.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"That's a joke. I don't go for election to test my popularity against somebody. We go for election because it's a serious business of determining who is going to form the government in this country. This is not a game that we play."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister
The Malaysian leader told a packed press conference that foreign interests propelled the belief the central issue of this election would come down to who voters sympathised with more.. Dr Mahathir, or his sacked deputy.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"That is the perception of some people, especially outside this country who are supporters of Anwar."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister
Dr Mahathir's falling out with Anwar Ibrahim caused a deep rift within the ruling party, threatening the prime minister's 18 years in the top job.
But, with his party members standing behind him, a relaxed prime minister emphasised that there was no in-fighting.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I think something for this country. I don't care whether I go down in history as a bad guy or good guy. What is important is what I achieved in this country while there is a Barisan national government. There is nothing personal about this election. Please don't make it a personal thing. I happen to be the leader, yes, but we work as a team. That's why all of them are behind me. These are all representatives of the Barisan nationals parties, 14 of them, and we stand united. You can see them standing very close together. You like them to hug each other? They can do that too."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister
The Election Commission will announce the election date on Friday.
Dr Mahathir hopes the National Front coalition will retain at least a two-third's majority in Parliament to sanction his rule, hit hard by a growing opposition movement and criticism over the Southeast Asian nation's human rights and judicial system.

wn.com/Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Parliament To Be Dissolved
Malaysian opposition figure Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday he agreed to run for Keadilan party (People's Justice Party of Malaysia) president
in party elections on May 26, defying a ban on him holding any political office and running in a general election until April 2008 because of a previous jail sentence.
The party, set up in 1999, is currently headed by Anwar's wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
"The initial test will be the acceptance of the nomination to be president of the party. That's of course in contravention of the existing law, but we are challenging that in court," Anwar said in an interview with AP Television.
Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998 by then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad over allegations of homosexuality and corruption.
He has said the charges were trumped up because he had begun to challenge Mahathir's authority.
Anwar was arrested, tried for alleged corruption and sodomy, and sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison. He was released in September 2004 after being acquitted of sodomy.
But he had already finished serving the corruption sentence, and that criminal record bars him from holding any political office and from running in general elections until April 2008.
If Anwar becomes Keadilan president, the party would have to apply to the Registrar of Society to request that the ban on political office be waived.
If the registrar refuses, he said the party can appeal the decision in court.
If it loses the appeal, Anwar would have to step down or the party would risk being deregistered.
"If it comes to a position where (there is) the risk of de-registration, party de-registration, then of course I would opt to support the party, and relinquish the position as president," Anwar said.
The party expects early general elections this year and wants Anwar to play an active role even if he can't run, a party official said on Sunday.

In this travel video travel guide to Malaysia, I travel to Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, and to Terangganu, the country's second-largest city.
I start off my trip by exploring Kenyir Lake, located just west of Terangganu, which is actually the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia (it's the size of Singapore). I head to the far end of the lake by speedboat to go trekking into the hilly jungle where I come across a school of hungry fish waiting for eager tourists like myself to provide them with a cheap snack. I then head back on the lake to explore the many islands that call this lake home.
Next, I head back onto the water -- this time onto the ocean -- to do a little squid jigging as part of the first annual Terengganu International Squid Jigging Fest. Squid jigging, for those of you that don't know, is the act of fishing for squid by hand with a line and hook, something I have questionable skill doing.
Back onto dry land, I explore the market in Terangganu, one of the best places to find fresh seafood in the entire country, and try some of the region's favorite desserts and iced coffee.
For the second half of the video, I head east to the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, where I -- what else? -- find some street food in the famous Chow Kit neighborhood, followed by a little more food in Kampung Baru, a sleeping Malay enclave flanked by the city's downtown tower.
I then take the monorail (!) to explore the Petronas Towers and the KL Tower, two of the city's most famous landmarks, followed by dinner in Jalan Alor, the city's famed outdoor street food district.
Finally, it's time for a little rest and relaxation back on the west coast of Malaysia at the island of Redang, one of the country's most beautiful tropical islands, where I get to experience what beach life is like in Malaysia.

Travel video about destination Malaysia.
Malaysia is an exotic world located in the Far East, full of tradition and history. We begin our journey in Malacca, the oldest city on the southwest coast of the Peninsular Malaysia that boasts six hundred years of history. Both Portuguese and Jesuit settlers lived here for a hundred and thirty years and introduced their culture to the region. The city’s history dates back to 1403 when Hindu prince, Paramesware of the Sri Vijaya Realm in Sumatra, established a sultanate. The Chinese-dominated area of the city extends across the opposite banks of the river where the mainly two storey residential and business premises are densely packed together. In contrast, the Cheng Hoon Temple is one of the oldest temples in Malaysia and nearby is the Kampung Kling Mosque which is of ancient Sumatran design. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s modern capital city, is relatively young. It originated in the middle of the nineteenth century at the junction of two rivers. Chinese pioneers discovered an abundance of minerals here. Since then, however, things have much improved and Kuala Lumpur is now one of the cleanest cities in the world with two steel towers as its unmistakeable landmark, connected by an impressive bridge. Since 1926, tea has been cultivated in the Cameron Highlands where the mild and rainy climate is ideal for its growth. British surveyor, William Cameron, discovered this region in 1885 and soon afterwards its wooded hills were transformed into tea plantations that now attract tourists from all over the world. Sarawak is located in Borneo, the third largest island on the planet. We start our journey through this Malayan federal state, in the northwest of the island, in the capital, Kuching. The British Empire had various buildings constructed in the city but its ethnic groups were content to remain within their own surroundings. Malaysia is like a magnificent fairy tale, a melting pot of various cultures and ethnic groups amid abundant tropical vegetation. Although Malaysia has changed, it has not forgotten the rich traditions of its indigenous tribes yet it is now a country that is travelling into a new age.

When I think of the most under-rated countries to visit in SE Asia Malaysia comes to mind. With a rich culture and diversity - unlike any other nation in Southeast Asia - there is something for everyone. Some of my favorite places to visit in Malaysia include Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang and the Cameron Highlands. The following is a top attractions travel guide for the best things to do in Malaysia:
1) Few architectural wonders can compete with the Petronas Towers. Equally as impressive by day as they are at night, it is an absolute must landmark to visit in Kuala Lumpur.
2) Night markets in Malaysia are well worth a visit. My personal favorite is the Jonker Street Night Market located in Melaka. On the weekends Jonker street shuts down to traffic and turns into a sea of people and stalls selling everything from trinkets to street food. While we were there we made sure to cool down with Cendol, which is our favorite Malaysian street food snack.
3) The Batu Caves are of my favorite attractions that is absolutely free! Taking the commuter train from KL Sentral we arrived early in the morning before all of the package tourists. The caves themselves, an important Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, are worth the 272 step climb to the top. You'll notice many of cheeky monkeys along the way.
4) The KL Bird Park is a quirky attraction worth checking out. Its claim to fame is being the largest walk in aviary. Home to thousands of birds you'll be able to spot peacocks, flamingos and many other exotic ones. It's not the cheapest attraction but I would say it it worth the price of admission if you plan to stay for several hours.
5) While you're in Georgetown, Penang consider visiting a recently opened cat cafe! The Purrfect Cat Cafe in George Town is home to some adorable cats just waiting to be petted. For the price of a small meal or drink you'll be able to sit down and play with them.
6) Whenever I head back to Malaysia I can't help but break out in a smile because I know I'm going to get a chance to eat dim sum again. My favorite place is in George Town and along with Chinese tea I can't really control myself.
7) When I mentioned Malaysia was a diverse country, I was referring to the people and cuisine. Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines and having the opportunity to eat a delicious banana leaf thali set is something I wouldn't miss for the world. Loaded up with rice, dal, vegetables, roti, papad, chutney and pickles. Coming in at only 22 Ringgit (for the two of us) it's an inexpensive but delicious meal.
8) Want to visit the biggest Buddhist temple in all of Southeast Asia? Would you be surprised to learn that it is in Malaysia? Kek Lok Si temple, also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, is located in Air Itam. The temple combines Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese rituals. To visit take bus 201, 203 or 204 from Komplex Komptar in the heart of George Town, Penang.
9) The Petronas Towers are brilliant by day but 'wow' do they ever shine bright at night. They have really cool light shows that takes place.
10) You can't visit Malaysia without having Roti Canai for breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or a snack. An Indian flat bread, similar to a pancake, it comes in all different sizes, shapes and flavors. Our two favorites being cheese and banana. Dip in curry using either you hands or utensils.
11) While in Malacca it's a great idea to take a Melaka River Cruise at night as the city really lights up at night. You'll notice wonderful old colonial architecture and street art along with traditional homes alongside the Kampong.
12) The Clan Jetties are an important part of George Town's heritage and the last bastions of old Chinese settlements.
13) Georgetown is one of the most hot and humid cities I've ever visited. If you're looking to escape that for a while head over to the Botanical Gardens just outside of the city. In shady conditions you'll have the opportunity to walk around this massive park where you'll surely spot monkeys and other wildlife.
14) When visiting Malacca be sure to check out a Baba-Nyonya restaurant. A mixture of Chinese and Malaysian cuisine at its finest. Some of our favorite dishes included Nyonya Laksa, Rojak and Popiah.
15) Bling. Bling. That's not the sound of a horn but instead the decorations on a rickshaw in George Town. For around 30 to 40 Ringgit you can take a full one hour city tour. It certainly beats walking around in the heat. Highlights for us included going through Little India.

wn.com/Things To Do In Malaysia | Top Attractions Travel Guide
I'm Mark Wiens and thank you very much for watching this video about a few of the top things to do in Kuala Lumpur, a city that just happens to be one of my favorite cities to visit in Southeast Asia. It's the largest and probably the most important and influential city in Malaysia and truly has some amazing sites to offer. Along with modern skyrise towers like the Petronas Towers, there are still lots of traditional historic buildings as well. The awesome mixture of cultures, the mix of traditional and modern, and very importantly, the outstanding cuisine is what makes Kuala Lumpur such a great city to explore!
1. On this list of top things to do in Kuala Lumpur I first stop by the most famous landmark of the the city: the Petronas Towers. These twin giant sky scrapers are huge, and they literally reach towards the heavens and touch the clouds. On the bottom of the Petronas Towers is a pretty fancy shopping mall while the tops of the towers are filled with offices. On the 41st and 42nd floor, there is a sky bridge which connects the two towers together and which is open for visitors. Years ago, it used to be free entrance but unfortunately now they have started to charge a rather steep 80 Malaysian Ringgits per person.
2. After the visiting the Petronas towers, number two on the list is the historical district of old Kuala Lumpur. Visiting and walking around the area is one of the top things to do in Kuala Lumpur and you shouldn't miss the opportunity. From Merdeka Square to the old railroad station, you'll see some amazing architecture and buildings. Another must visit is the National Mosque, which is known as Masjid Negara. With a capacity of 15,000, this is the central and most visited mosque in the city.
3. The Menara KL Tower, along with the Petronas Towers, is one of the dominating features of Kuala Lumpur's skyline. At 421 meters in height, it's one of the world's tallest communications towers. I was lucky enough to be invited to the annual BASE jumping event which was held at the KL Tower so I had a pass to go to the top for the incredible view and to see the event (http://migrationology.com/2012/10/jordan-kilgore-base-jump-kuala-lumpur/). The KL Tower also offer look out viewpoints and a number of restaurants where you can dine with an incredible view.
4. Number 4 is Little India which is better known as Brickfields. Kuala Lumpur is home to many Indian's many from the south of the country. Brickfields is a popular place to browse, shop for all sorts of Indian products and most importantly to eat at some seriously delicious Indian restaurants. If you're looking for good Indian food in Kuala Lumpur, check out this restaurant: http://migrationology.com/2012/11/south-indian-food-kuala-lumpur-vishalatchi/
5. Chinatown, located on Petaling Street, is one of the biggest Kuala Lumpur attractions. It's mostly known for it street shopping and restaurants. You can find all sorts of fake brand names and nearly everything imaginable.
6. Thean Hou Temple is one of the most impressive Daoist temples in Kuala Lumpur. It's free to visit and offers insights into the Hainanese community in the city and there are also great views of the city.
7. Central Market, is a top tourist shopping attraction in Kuala Lumpur. Though many of the products are rather touristy, there are some good things waiting to be found.
8. Within central Kuala Lumpur are the KL Lake Gardens and Bird Park. It makes a great tropical escape to the bustling city life.
9. The Batu Caves, located just outside the central part of the city is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur. The caves and shrines are one of the most sacred Hindu sites outside of India.
10. Chow Kit Market is the central fresh wet market in the city. Everyday thousands of shoppers get their Malaysian food ingredients at this interesting market.
11. Malaysian food is the ultimate attraction to visiting Kuala Lumpur. With a great mixture of local Malay, Chinese, and Indian, there's no shortage of incredible dining that will leave you satisfied and hungry for more! For myself, eating is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur!
Hope you enjoyed this list and hope you have a wonderful visit!

Malaysia is situated just north of the Equator, between Thailand and Singapore. Malaysia is a federation of 13 states, with 11 on the Malaysian Peninsula and two on the island of Borneo. With a population of just over 27 million people, a low cost of living and a year-round tropical climate, Malaysia remains a favorite destination for travellers the world over.
Malaysia is a nation rich in diversities.
One of the first places you'll notice this diversity is in the smiling faces of those waiting to great you. Malaysia is truly a racial melting pot, where Malay, Indian, Chinese and smaller ethnic groups live together in respectful harmony.
Malaysia's diverse cultural heritage adds spice and colour to every aspect of life here, from religions and festivals to culinary traditions and architecture.
The national language is Malay, but English is widely-spoken, making it a breeze for travellers to find their way around and to get to know the locals.
Malaysia is also a country of awe-inspiring geographical diversity.
Looking for unspoiled beaches and clear tropical waters? In Malaysia, some of the world's most pristine islands and marine habitats await you.
Feel the need to rise above the mundane everyday world? Come, let your spirit soar among highland hideaways and mist-shrouded mountains.
Longing for a little adventure? Explore some of the Earth's steamiest jungles, wildest rivers and longest cave systems.
Malaysia is a land of natural diversity.
As one of the 12 most biologically-diverse countries in the world, Malaysia is a treasure-trove of amazing natural richness and beauty.
70 percent of the country's land area remains forested, and the country is a world leader in conservation and sustainable tourism programmes.
Malaysia is a place of diverse experiences. For active travellers there are endless ways to enjoy the Malaysian outdoors. Tee-off on some of the world's most beautiful golf courses. Explore endless trekking trails, or kayak up the river into valleys, forests and jungles that most people will only ever experience in nature magazines.
Then, there are those urban jungles to explore. In Malaysia, the past and the future sit side by side. Some of the New World's most celebrated architectural creations rise above proud historic districts that have changed little for decades.
Malaysians love to shop, and the country is packed with modern plazas, quaint shophouses and sprawling markets. From designer fashions and electronics to exquisite tribal handicrafts and antiques, Malaysia is the place for bargain hunters.
There are thousands of temples and places of worship that dazzle the senses and soothe the soul, as well as health and beauty spas waiting to rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit.
Malaysia is a land with a culture as diverse as those who come to experience it. And those who come to visit often return, because no two visits to Malaysia are quite the same.

All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint streets of Georgetown was an adventure in itself. Penang is definitely a way different vibe compared to Kuala Lumpur. I got way more of a typical South East Asian city vibe out of Penang, and by that I mean, the smells, dirty streets, critters etc.. However, this didn't detract from an excellent experience of the city.
The first thing we did was rent a motorbike and get a lay of the land. Aside from the beaches (which were nowhere near as nice as Langkawi: watch our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqjZrlsQzBQ) most action in Penang takes place in and around Georgetown.
Georgetown has famous street art scattered through the city and we spent an entire day on a scavenger hunt to find all these different murals and sculptures. They were really worth spending a day hunting down.
Penang Hill was a great view of the city, but as you can see in the video the tram ride to the top is less than stellar. You are crammed in like sardines and once you get to the top there isn't much going on other than to get an excellent view and pictures of the city of Penang.
Eating.... of course, this is what everyone will tell you to do in Penang and there was no shortage of awesome Indian Food. We ate the same Indian food 5 meals in a row I think. Aside from Indian there are several excellent Dim Sum places to check out. This was one of our first times eating Dim Sum and it was an experience to say the least. Luckily we had a friendly staff member explain how this works. If you don't know, it goes something kind of like this: Sit down at a table in a jam packed open air restaurant and several carts will be wheeled around continuously. As a cart approaches pick your Dim Sum. I lost count of how many different options there were, but our favorites were definitely the shrimp dim sum and the BBQ bun.

Travel video about destination Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's modern capital city, is relatively young. It originated in the middle of the 19th century at the junction of the Gombak and Kelang Rivers.
The Petronas Twin Towers are one of the city's main landmarks. Each tower is 452 metres tall connected by a breathtaking bridge. The façade of this unique architectural gem is particularly splendid in bright sunlight or when illuminated at night.
The old Masjid Jamek Mosque is situated in the centre of the city on the precise spot where the city was founded. Several prayer halls, and an inner courtyard that contains palm trees, make the mosque into a tranquil oasis.
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the largest building in Merdeka Square, extends for more than 200 metres. This splendid Moorish style building with onion-shaped towers and a central clock tower was designed in 1897 by architect A.C. Norman.
Malaysians dance at every opportunity. Although traditional clothing and dance styles change from region to region, they always convey the same expressions of love, emotion and passion. Traditional festivals also feature dances where the men and women dance together without touching.
The Zoo, Negara provides a good insight into the animal kingdom of Malaysia and South East Asia. The enclosures are extremely spacious. From the ostrich to the imposing Seladang wild buffalo, there are also rare animals such as the orangutan and tapir.
Hardly any other capital city on earth offers as many contrasting sights and multicultural impressions as here. Tradition, history, the past, present and future, each is harmonically united in the pulsating metropolis that is Kuala Lumpur.

Kuching, officially the City of Kuching, and formerly the City of Sarawak, is the capital and most populous city of the East Malaysian state of Sarawak. The city covers an area of 719 sq miles (1,863 km²). Kuching is one of the two subsets of the Kuching Proper subdistrict, the other subset being part of the Padawan municipality. Kuching Proper is one of the three subdistricts in the Kuching District, which is one of the three districts in the Kuching Division.
The most important places to visit in Kuching are: Kubah National Park, Fairy Cave, Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Sarawak Orchid Garden, Chinese Museum, Sarawak Cultural Village, Kuching Esplanade, Wind Cave, The Old Courthouse, Matang Wildlife Centre and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Kuching travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

This is a Kuala Lumpur travel video showcasing our favorite things to do along with what we consider to be the top attractions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From this travel video guide you should get an idea of an itinerary or schedule you can plan activities around while based in KL.
We first venture off to marvel at the magnificent Petronas Towers. These otherworldly towers are the most impressive buildings I've ever seen in my entire life. They don't look like they belong on planet earth. Equally as impressive during the day as they are at night, I recommend visiting the towers frequently and scouting out various vantage points to take photos.
Next we tour around the Independence Square (Merdeka Square) located nearby Chinatown. The impressive architecture and enormous flag are standout features. If you come early enough you can beat the tourist buses and at night the buildings really shine.
No trip to Kuala Lumpur would be complete without hopping on and off the LRT sky train. At night we took a ride and captured some high speed footage. You get a glimpse of the Petronas Towers before we head into the tunnels.
Just 13 km north of KL is a special Hindu Shrine called the Batu Caves. Dedicated to Lord Murugan it's a wonderful free attraction worth exploring. While visiting you'll notice your share of cheeky monkeys roaming about.
Finally for breakfast, lunch or dinner consider having roti canai (flat bread) along with curry. My personal favorite is banana roti along with watermelon juice.

Kuala Lumpur has been the most underrated city in South East Asia. This place blew us away. KL is lightyears ahead of the likes of Bangkok, Thailand and Vientiane, Laos. This is definitely the most livable city in South East Asia, but also happens to be a little bit more expensive. However, if you follow a few of these tips in this video regarding eating local food such as South Indian Food, Street food etc. you can save where it counts. Also, the public transportation in KL is as efficient as it gets in SE Asia, and shockingly was cheaper than that of the MRT in Bangkok.

We have always heard that Langkawi, Malaysia, is a beautiful island that you must see. So we decided we had to check it out for ourselves. The first night we landed it was raining and dreary, but the next two days were stellar. The beaches are far cleaner than those of Thailand, and the water is a beautiful aqua color.
We rented a motorbike for a day which was ridiculously easy to rent. We were in and out of the shop in less that 5 minutes, and the cost was 30 Ringgit or about $9USD. We drove the entire island which was beautiful. Renting a motorbike allowed us to get to the Jetty, The Worlds Steepest Cable Car as well as an Arabian Horse Stud Farm. We highly recommend having your own transportation anywhere you're traveling because it opens up so many more doors.
The Worlds Steepest Cable car was just as thrilling as you would imagine. If you are afraid of Heights, this is definitely going to test your nerves.
