EA says 20 percent of games sold on PS4 & Xbox One are digital downloads
By the end of this year, both the PS4 and Xbox One will have had unprecedented console sale numbers, and the same can be said for full digital game downloads.
(Battlefield 4, PS4, Xbox One)
I'm frankly surprised it's that low on the consoles that have been fully connected for the past 2 generations. (By that I mean the availability of digital purchases across the full game spectrum, in addition to connected multiplay.) I generally buy digital now, as long as the price isn't too far out of line with discs' from Amazon or other online outlets. As a result, only 2 of my games on the new gen are discs. The rest are all digital. The convenience is that seductive, and so far, nothing has happened to make me regret it.
I understand about places with lousy internet service--slow speeds and stupid caps. Fortunately for me, I don't have these issues--so far. I dread the day that Roadrunner decides to cap our bandwidth, or they get acquired by a greedier business. Then again, we can get FiOS in this area now from another provider. Competition is a wonderful thing.
What's the logic with digital being more expensive though? Should be cheaper than retail. Big advantage of a disc is you can easily delete it make some room for other games and when you fancy playing it again reinstall it in minutes later on and play where you left it before.
About 95% of my purchases are physical. Aside from the occasional HUGE discount on PSN like the recent battlefield 4 with premium bundle for only $18, the only digital games I buy are those that are digital only. The rest I buy on disk.
Convenience plays a big factor. Especially when you're cycling through games. I like having physical but prefer Digital copies of most of my games after being a long time PC gamer.
100% here. When this gen is over, I do plan on purchasing the disc versions that are available at a very cheap price just so they can sit on the shelf.
You just can't beat a 2tb 2.5 inch drive that fits in your pocket, with all your games on it. I'm gonna need to buy another in about 2 years.
I swear 2 tb isn't enough even with the physical discs... Hoping sony follow suit on the external hdds like ms followed suit on the no consequence hdd change
I rarely buy digital, when I can go to Best Buy and get Brand New games Day 1 for $48 instead of $60, and on top of that get a $10 rewards coupon for a future purchase.
The only times I buy digital is when there's a sale, or a key site has the game for dirt cheap.
Otherwise it makes no sense value wise, especially when I have multiple consoles to buy games for.
After counting Reward coupons and the discounts, I can buy 6 brand new games from Best Buy, at the same price as 4 digital games ($240). And when I'm done with the game I can give it to a friend or sell it.
I don't trust anyone enough to account share except my uncle, so that's out of the question for every platform except Xbox.
But please explain how it works.
I use to do it on PS3, but it got blocked. And I use to family share XBLG on 360 (I believe it was $120 for up to 4 members or something, so $30 each).
Yup! Switching discs when someone invites you to play XYZ when you are playing ABC is a pain! This is why I tend to buy my MP-games in digital format, I can drop in whenever I get an invite and not have to flip out the disc.
ofc console players prefer disc games , becouse they can easy resell them , they are not locked to single account -console . Nowdays every pc game need to be asigned to damn origin uplay steam or whatever shit platform there is
That number is only going to continue to grow. Black Friday sales were mainly done online, the digital age is here, and these devs/publishers know this. Expect an even bigger focus on online (only) for these next consoles.
I did all of my Black Friday shopping online. But 4 of the 6 games I either bought for myself or someone bought for me were physical. Of the two that weren't, I bought the Wolfenstein standalone digital because PSN had the best discount, and the other title, Yu-Gi-Oh, is digital only. All the games I bought for others were physical. Shopping digitally doesn't mean you're buying digital products.
Every Black Friday and cyber Monday game I bought online was a physical copy of a game sent to me in the mail. Very few Black Friday deals were actually digital games. Most were physical games.
That's great that both of you are telling me your personal experiences for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Taco Tuesday, I have no doubt that many did the same.
You both kind of proved my point also, many more consumers have access and spend more online. And you will see this 20% number increase year after year. These huge company's see this and will focus more on their online services, especially for the next consoles.
About 97% of my games are Digital,I've got about 30 games in total and only 3 are physical copies. can't be bothered to swap discs because most nights when I'm playing I switch between 2-3 games depending what my friends are playing. I thought this 20% sales for battlefront who be higher more towards 40%.
I will never go digital unless it's mandatory or bundled. I got a cool poster with my Fallout 4 copy as well a cheaper price than digital. Digital can sod off unless it's cheaper than retail.
Just getting to 20% now on digital purchases, I find it funny that some people think games are being bought at a higher percentage digital just because themselves and their 10 friends bought it digital, hahaha. Going to be at least another 5 to 10 years till games are at least 50% digitally bought.
13 digitals and 5 physical this year since owning my box. not too bad but i know i have like close to a hundred 360 digital games and wish i still had my physical copies but o well
I only buy digital if a game I like is on sale or only available digitally. But now that you have to install games on consoles, it almost doesn't matter whether you buy the physical or digital version.

However with my Vita I prefer buying digital over lugging game cartridges around.
But with my 3DS I prefer physical copies over digital.
I have no idea why I do that.
With two system, it's easier to manage my games with a digital license than it is to drag around discs.
Although, I still would like to own the physical copies of the games. I typically buy them when they are cheap 8-12$ and keep them in their packaging.

So how does account share work?

Having to get up to switch disks.

Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...

Add the fact I can sell / lend / blend the disc as I please and it seems really one sided.
