The former French colony in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Mozambique with a landmass 1.5 times that of Germany, but with a population of only 20 million, is now facing a huge humanitarian crisis, according to Natascha Paddison, acting Deputy Representative for UNICEF: “The country’s health and education systems are not really working, they are crumbling”, she says.
Following the 2009 coup d’état by former mayor of Antananarivo, Mr. Marc Ravalomanana was ousted by Andy Rajoelina who is now heading the High Transitional Authority (HTA), the unrecognized government of Madagascar. The unconstitutional change of power by Rajoelina has made an already dire situation much worse: “Following the coup all aid to Madagascar was suspended”, explains Paddison, “that is catastrophic for a country where foreign aid accounted for 70 % of the national budget”, she continues.
Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest countries and has had a negative growth of GDP in the last year; its external debt is now almost 3 billion US dollars. “In the last two years 77 % of the population have been living on less than 1.25 dollars a day”, Paddison says. According to a US Congress report Madagascar’s infant mortality rate is over 5% and three-quarters of the population is living in rural areas.
“The goal is to have free and fair elections taking place in Madagascar as soon as possible, but that has so far been impossible”, says Paddison. “The current government simply has no vested interest in letting free and fair elections take place, there are rumours that they are so embroiled in corruption themselves”, she explains. The main political opposition leaders are living in exile in South Africa and France. The political impasse makes humanitarian help very difficult Paddison says and continues, “in 2010 the government cut its health budget by 30% there’s no new infrastructure in healthcare being built, no new schools.” According to an Amnesty International report for 2011, Madagascan authorities have been violating human rights such as excessive use of force and violence, arbitrary arrests and detentions, limiting freedom of expression and unfair trials.
In addition to its political troubles Madagascar is a country prone to natural disasters like heavy floods and severe drought. “Every year we have 3-4 cyclones that hit Madagascar and they knock down schools and houses and leave people pretty destitute, also in the south we have a lot of droughts and floods, it’s not helping the situation,” Natascha Paddison explains. In addition Madagascar’s biologically diverse fauna is facing ever increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural production and overgrazing, and desertification and water pollution. Paddison says it is highly likely that the government itself is causing damage to the environment: “There is evidence that there is a lot of illegal foresting going on, in addition there are some “ruling families” that control all of Madagascar’s mining for precious stones like diamonds, gold, sapphires, while the population suffers.”
This combination of political misrule and volatile weather leaves Madagascar and its people in dire straits. “The problem is that the government is not prioritizing the social sectors. It is channeling the money into its own affairs”, says Paddison and adds that the only way forward is to help people directly rather than through government channels: “We have a 60 million dollar trust fund for education that usually goes to the government for dealing with these kinds of problems, but recently this fund has gone to UNICEF. We pay local authorities for health workers and teachers directly”.

Madagascar's political instability over the last two years has severely damaged the country's once flourishing tourism industry, which is a main economic source for the tropical island off the southeastern coast of Africa.
Many tourists and foreign investors were scared off by the 2009 coup in which Andry Rajoelina, the opposition leader, dissolved the government and declared himself a transitional president of the country.
But Rajoelina also faced a coup attempt that ended last Saturday after the military stormed the revolters' barracks, which has further undermined Madagsacar's image abroad.
It came shortly before voters on Monday overwhelmingly backed a new constitution that allows the current president to run for office.
Tania Page reports from Antananarivo, the capital, on how a sharp drop in tourism has dramatically dented Madagascar's economy.

David A. Brancaccio (born May 17, 1960) is an American radio and television journalist. He has been the host of the public radio business program Marketplace and the PBS newsmagazine Now.
Brancaccio was born in New York City and grew up in Waterville, Maine. His father is Italian American and his mother is Ashkenazi Jewish American. He began his career in broadcasting on WTVL radio in 1976 at the age of fifteen. He received a Bachelor of Arts in African Studies and History from Wesleyan University in 1982 and a master's in journalism from Stanford University in 1988. He traveled widely, spending his fourth grade in Rome, his ninth grade in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar and his senior year in college in Legon, Ghana.
In 1989, Brancaccio began contributing to the public radio program Marketplace. He was first named as the program's European editor based in London. Brancaccio became senior editor and host of Marketplace in 1993. From London, Brancaccio also contributed diplomatic and feature coverage for the radio service of the Christian Science Monitor. During Brancaccio's tenure as host, Marketplace received the DuPont-Columbia Award (1998) and the George Foster Peabody Award (2001). He anchored the television newsmagazine, California Connected, that aired on many Californian PBS stations, from 2002 to 2003.
In 2003, Brancaccio left Marketplace to join Bill Moyers on Now. Brancaccio was co-host for over a year prior to Moyers' retirement at the end of 2004. On his last Now broadcast, Moyers had this to say about Brancaccio:
I asked David to join me over a year ago because I wanted my successor to have grown up, as it were, in public broadcasting, an independent journalist, believing our job is to sift through the untidy realities, weigh the competing claims, and offer to you our considered approximation of what's really going on.
Among his beats: business innovation and the economy, politics, human rights, national security, the environment, health care, and science policy.
In 2007, Brancaccio won a national Emmy for coverage of a public health story in Kenya. In 2009, he won a Walter Cronkite Award for excellence in television political coverage.[2] He also holds the David Brower award for Environmental Coverage from the Sierra Club. In 2005, Brancaccio conducted the last, long-form television interview with the legendary author Kurt Vonnegut.[3] The last episode of Now was broadcast April 30, 2010.
Brancaccio is a contributor to several broadcast, electronic, and print media, including CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Nightly Business Report, Wall Street Week with Fortune, The Baltimore Sun and Psychology Today. In 2000, his book, Squandering Aimlessly, was published, his account of a pilgrimage across America to learn how Americans apply their personal values to their money. He also lectures widely about the future of the economy and the role of journalism in a democracy.
Brancaccio's documentary film Fixing the Future, exploring more sustainable options for the economy, was released in theaters in 2012.
In 2011, Brancaccio returned to American Public Media's Marketplace as a correspondent covering new economy issues and tech/innovation. He is now host and senior editor of the popular business program The Marketplace Morning Report[4] from 6:51 am Eastern to 7:51 am Pacific on public radio stations nationwide.
Brancaccio lives in South Orange, New Jersey, with his wife, Mary, an educator and poet. He is an avid photographer and bicyclist.

Madagascar Oil (LON:MOIL) CEO Robert Estill tells Proactiveinvestors that there are potentially fifty years of development ahead at their Tsimiroro field, once the Madagascan government endorse the explorer’s heavy-oil development plan. “As long as we continue to develop the asset and develop it profitably then it is a long-term return that investors can take advantage of,” he said.
Estill said the company looks to produce tens of thousands of barrels of heavy oil and that since the local market can only support so much, the long-term plan will be to export to international markets. Then the company will look to striking strategic partnerships. Estill says that while Madagascar Oil does have a certain level of expertise, they do need additional support including drilling, a pipeline capacity and facilities capabilities.

The AUMF (The “Authorization of the Use of Military Force”) was a bill passed in the immediate wake of 9/11 and authorized the President of the United States to use all “necessary and appropriate force” against those who had aided the terrorists responsible for the attacks. In the nearly 15 years since its passage, the US has found itself involved in a never-ending war on terror, which presents increasingly complex ethical, legal, and strategic challenges.
To unpack the issue, we’ve enlisted journalist Spencer Ackerman, head of the Service Women’s Action Network and former marine Anu Bhagwati, and Sebastian Junger, the journalist and filmmaker responsible for the award-winning documentary Restrepo.

In which John Green teaches you about what westerners call the middle ages and the lives of the aristocracy...in Japan. The Heian period in Japan lasted from 794CE to 1185CE, and it was an interesting time in Japan. Rather than being known for a thriving economy, or particularly interesting politics, the most important things to come out of the Heian period were largely cultural. There was a flourishing of art and literature in the period, and a lot of that culture was created by women. The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu was the classic piece of literature of the day, and it gave a detailed look into the way the Aristocrats of the Heian period lived. While this doesn't give a lot of insight into the lives of daily people, it can be very valuable, and the idea of approaching history from a cultural perspective is a refreshing change from the usual military or political history that survives from so many eras.

One of the last major areas on Earth to be settled by humans, the natural beauty and ecological diversity of Madagascar makes it feel like a country forgotten by time. Located off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, Madagascar is home to thousands of plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. Madagascar’s extraordinary natural diversity has earned the country the nickname “the eighth continent”. A veneration of ancestry and tradition pervades the national culture, a reverence that is reflected in the country’s architecture, art and social manners. Visit the top tourist attractions in Madagascar to discover for yourself the natural, cultural and historical diversity that is Madagascar.

Curious culinarian and James Beard Award–winning chef Andrew Zimmern continues his search for the most interesting dishes across the globe in the new original series “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations,” premiering with back–to–back episodes on Monday, January 26 at 9:00 p.m & 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. The 13–episode series, an extension of the popular “Bizarre Foods” franchise, takes viewers on an international journey to iconic cities around the world for a taste of their quintessential, not–to–be missed dishes. From melt in your mouth chocolate in Zurich to decadent gelato in Florence, savory paella in Barcelona to creamy clam chowder in Boston, the half–hour weekly series is an exploration of iconic foods, where they came from, how they are made, and the right way to eat them.
Zimmern puts it this way, “For years now I have wanted to make a show that tells the world in simple, easily digested terms what the classic 5 or 6 foods are in the world’s great cities. If you go to Paris or Tokyo, these would be the must–eat dishes that you have to try before leaving and perhaps more importantly, why. The food literacy in America is rising. The history and sociology lessons standing behind these foods are entertaining and help bridge the culture gaps.”
The premiere episode of “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations,” airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, explores the ancient city of Athens, Greece and some of its most recognizable food, beginning with gyros and souvlaki. Along with a third generation restaurant owner, Zimmern guides viewers through the unique preparation of classic dishes, and reveals how the Greek have perfected these timeless recipes. Next, Zimmern stops at Krinos bakery for deliciously deep–fried Greek doughnuts called loukamades, followed by a look at the story behind spanakopita — a multi–cultural mash–up of flakey dough with spinach and feta filling. The art of making spanakopita is such a highly–regarded skill in Athens that a professional guild exists for the chefs who have perfected it! Zimmern goes on to find koulouri, a Greek culinary necessity similar to a bagel; dolmades, delicately stuffed grape leaves; and of course, Greek yogurt, which is anything but what viewers see on grocery store shelves here in America.
In the second episode, airing at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, Zimmern discovers the delectable delicacies of Paris. At Bistrot Paul Bert in the trendy 11th Arrondissement neighborhood, the restaurant serves up the most indulgent steak frites. Croque–monsieur, the simple Parisian ham and cheese sandwich, becomes a crunchy, melty masterpiece at Café La Palette — rumored to be a favorite spot of Picasso and Hemingway. Zimmern showcases other French finds including authentic artisan baguettes from Moulin de la Vierge, the finest buttery croissants at Gerard Mulot’s pastry shop, the best light wafer macarons with flavorful fillings by pâtissier Arnaud Larher, and the traditional sweet and savory crepes at Ti Jos.
Visiting cities such as London, Munich, Hong Kong, New Orleans and more, Zimmern takes viewers into the kitchens where generations of chefs prepare and serve the cities’ most beloved dishes.
“Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations” is produced by Tremendous Entertainment for Travel Channel. Andrew Zimmern is an executive producer. For Tremendous!, the executive producers are Colleen Needles Steward, Shannon Keenan Demers, Kristin Graham and David Barsky. For Travel Channel, the executive producer is David E. Gerber.

An outbreak of plague in Madagascar has killed 40 people and infected almost 80 others, the World Health OrgThe WHO warned of the danger of a "rapid spread" of the disease in the capital, Antananarivo.
The situation is worsened by high levels of resistance among fleas to a leading insecticide, the WHO added.
Humans usually develop the bubonic form of the plague after being bitten by an infected flea carried by rodents.
If diagnosed early, bubonic plague can be treated with antibiotics. 2% of the cases in Madagascar are the more dangerous pneumonic form of the disease, which can be spread person-to-person by coughing.
The first known case in the outbreak was a man in Soamahatamana village in the district of Tsiroanomandidy, about 200km west of Antananarivo, at the end of August.
There have been two confirmed cases in the capital, including one death.
"There is now a risk of a rapid spread of the disease due to the city's high population density and the weakness of the healthcare system," the WHO said.
A task force has been activated to manage the outbreak.
Last year health experts warned that the island was facing a plague epidemic unless it slowed the spread of the disease. It said that inmates in Madagascar's rat-infested jails were particularly at risk.please subcribe the video

Sex and Survival - An increasing number of children in Madagascar are becoming part of the sex trade, with police ineffective, the numbers are likely to continue to grow.

Using undercover filming, this powerful investigation exposes a booming child sex trade. In the hub of Madagascar, one of the world's poorest countries, prostitution is seen as an unavoidable means of survival.
"My daughter was at school, I had no money and no job so she decided to become a prostitute. I finally decided not to stop her," says one mother, who like many others are now forced into prostituting their own children. With daily flights from Europe bringing sex tourists to Madagascar's chaotic capital, some as young as eleven are selling their bodies. Authorities claim to be tackling the problem but it's the local residents - mainly children themselves - who are trying to find solutions to this adult scourge. "If it happens, we warn the police that we have seen foreigners with underage girls and they then alert local tourism officials." Jeannoda Randimbiarison, a social worker for UNICEF, says the authorities lack the will to do what is necessary. "If the law is not enforced in Madagascar it will all continue. It is like we are conducting a genocide of Malagasy children."

Tourism numbers have plunged to record follows following an industrial action last month at Air Madagascar. The strike started on June 15 over what workers said was poor governance and mismanagement of the airline, leading to a 65-70 percent cancellation of flights. Madagascar officials now want more foreign firms to start flying to the Indian Ocean island nation to boost tourism. CCTV's Kathleen Ogunde reports.

Boogie Pilgrim strongly believes that tourism is a wonderful opportunity for people to get to know other cultures and their environment. In Madagascar, the encounters take place between western relatively wealthy travellers and people who are among the poorest in the world. In addition travellers pass through unique and fragile ecosystems.
Boogie Pilgrim is convinced that, the adoption of appropriate practices can give an important contribution both to minimize the negative environmental, social and economic impacts and to maximize the positive ones. Travelling has to be a rewarding experience for tourists and, at the same time, a beneficial activity for local communities and for their environment.
In order to reach these objectives, Boogie Pilgrim adopted a Travellers' code of conduct and an Employees' code of conduct.
Environmental commitments:
- Encourage use of internet and emails to share information with clients and suppliers, in order to minimize paper use and transportation.
- Encourage energy saving practices, for electricity and water utilization
- Support conservation, through financial contributions and through recruiting eco-volunteers
- Provide tourists with information on good practices on how to contribute to conservation during their visits.
Socio-cultural commitments:
- Organize encounters between tourists and local communities, respecting and promoting the local culture, in order to increase the local pride and to enrich guests' experience
- Involve local communities in decision making, when tourism activities involve them or their territory.
Economic commitments:
- Hire staff according to the national legislation
- Hire and give continuous training to local guides and staff
- Promote visits and encourage paybacks to support rural public schools and local development projects
- Whenever possible, use suppliers which are ethical, locally owned and that promote Malagasy culture and conservation.
- Encourage our customers to buy products which are locally produced instead of imported goods.

Some extraordinary phenomena have taken place in recent times; Hurricane Katrina, the heat wave of 2003, polar bears swimming in search of ice and vast swarms of insects enveloping an African village. But are these isolated incidents or are they omens of a greater global change?
Sir David discovers that the world is warming at an unprecedented rate, and finds out why this is now far beyond any normal allowance for cyclical fluctuation. But are humans to blame? These changes are already in motion whatever we do now, but Sir David believes that we may be able to act to prevent a catastrophe. People around the world are having to adapt their way of life as the climate changes; the Inuit in the Arctic whose hunting is now limited, the Pacific island inhabitants forced to move as their homes disappear beneath the waves, and the Siberian homes slowly sinking into the permafrost. Sir David investigates some of the possible scenarios for the future, including rising sea-levels, insect plagues and an increase in diseases.

As the freak weather phenomenon El Nino fades away, its antithesis - La Nina - is beginning to appear on the weather charts of the world.
NASA scientists have released new satellite images that show El Nino's colder sibling may be on the way.
Time-lapse satellite imagery released by NASA on Friday shows a dramatic drop in temperatures in the eastern Pacific.
This is evidence, NASA claims, that conditions are ripe for a La Nina weather event.
The phenomenon may well usher in global weather changes that are the exact opposite of those caused by El Nino.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"During La Nina events you tend to get the flip side of what happens with El Nino. Over North America those places that were wet tend to be dry, those places that were warm during an El Nino tend to be cooler. Over southern Africa you tend to get drought during an El Nino event and so during La Nina you get that flip side and not necessarily symmetrical. You tend to get wetter over places like southern Africa."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. David Adamec, NASA Research Oceanographer
Scientists predict that La Nina will create a heavy monsoon flow over South America and Australia.
At the same time, they warn that La Nina weather patterns are ideal conditions for the generation of hurricanes.
They caution that the U-S should expect a heavy season this year.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"So during El Ninos, you tend to have a suppression in the number of hurricanes that you get. With La Nina, the winds weaken and it allows the clouds in the atmosphere to build up to great heights and therefore you usually end up with more hurricane generation during La Nina events."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. David Adamec, NASA Research Oceanographer
Thanks to newly deployed satellites and ocean buoys, scientists are now able to take close-up views of the conditions that create weather events like La Nina.
With newly developed microwave sensors, it is now possible to peer through the clouds to get a precise view of the conditions that give birth to climate changing phenomenon.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And so it's a combination of the satellites looking at the surface, the buoys providing information below the surface that are going to help us understand what's going on with El Nino/La Nina, to monitor the events in the Pacific Ocean, and if our understanding gets good enough, hopefully, to predict when the next events are going to occur."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. David Adamec, NASA Research Oceanographer
Climate observers say that the last EL Nino was much different from those that occurred in previous decades.
As for the possible influence of global warming on weather patterns, NASA scientists are still undecided.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What effects global warming has is a topic of research, there are some scenarios that show under a global warming scenario these events become more frequent and more intense."
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. David Adamec NASA Research Oceanographer
La Ninas generally follow El Ninos only about 30 to 50 percent of the time.
And NASA officials say that if it occurs this time around, its greatest effects will be felt during the autumn and winter of this year.

Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization that was founded in 1971 near Boston (USA) to promote action and understanding necessary to sustain the Natural environment. The Earthwatch supports scientific field research and education by offering volunteers the opportunity to join research teams around the world to collect field data in the areas such as wildlife conservation, rainforest ecology, marine science and archaeology.
Since 1971, the worldwide organization has recruited more than 93,000 volunteers who have joined scientists in the field as research assistants, and between them have contributed more than 11 million hours of their time to frontline ENVIRONMENTAL research all over the world. Earthwatch supports more than 50 vital research expions in more than 28 counties.
Research areas
Earthwatch volunteers partner with leading scientists in the field to conduct valuable research that makes a difference in the world across four vital areas:
• Ocean Health - This research seeks to protect marine biodiversity with a focus on those parts of the ocean most quickly impacted by society, such as the highly threatened coastal habitats including mangroves and coral reefs.
Earthwatch research expions (provides Social Media Management)
Provided are current research expions being fielded by Earthwatch scientists and volunteers from around the world:
• Amazon Riverboat Exploration - Advancing strategies for community-based wildlife management and conservation in rural areas of Loreto, Peru that facilitate sustainable hunting for local communities, and ensure that nationally protected areas and conservation concessions work with local people and not against them.
• Animals in the Outback - Investigating the impacts of integrated pest management strategies on native fauna species in an open (non-fenced) system in Australia for development of an optimal predator control program.
• Arabian Leopards on the Edge in Oman - Build national capacity for safeguarding the long term viability of the Arabian leopard and its habitat in Jebel Samhan through provision of baseline habitat and population data to establish a conservation plan for mitigating human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss and other threats, and to set up a framework for long term population and habitat monitoring.
• Carnivores of Madagascar - A conservation and development program to secure survival of endemic carnivores, their prey, and habitat in and around Ankarafantsika National Park, Madagascar, focusing on the fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox).
• Cheetah Conservation in Namibia - Securing habitat for the long-term survival of the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) and its ecosystem through multi-disciplined, integrated programs in research, conservation and education.
• Climate change and caterpillars - Over half of all described organisms in the world are involved in plant-insect-parasitoid interactions, yet basic ecological assumptions about diversity of these interactions still lack quantitative tests. This project addresses how climate change and extreme weather events disrupt tritrophic interaction diversity, leading to herbivore outbreaks, and disruption of interaction diversity causes unstable ecosystems and diminishes ecosystems services.
• Climate Change in Chesapeake Bay Forests - Part of the HSBC Climate Program which aims to find methods for managing forests that will maximize the benefits we derive from them into the future. Investigating the effect of management history on response of mixed deciduous forest to climate.
• Climate Change in China's Gutianshan Forests - Part of the HSBC Climate Program which aims to find methods of managing forests that will maximize the benefits we derive from them into the future. Investigating the effect of fragmentation and management systems on response of broad-leafed forests to climate change.
• Climate Change in India's Western Ghat Forests - Part of the HSBC Climate Program which aims to find methods for managing forests that will maximize the benefits we derive from them into the future. Investigating the effect of fragmentation and management systems on response of mixed forests to climate change in a biodiversity hotspot.
• Climate Change in Wytham Woods - Carbon/Animal Ecology - Part of the HSBC Climate Program which aims to find methods of managing forests that will maximize the benefits we derive from them into the future. Investigating the effect in the UK of fragmentation and management history on response of temperate forest to climate.
• Costa Rican Coffee from Community to Cup - Exploring the value of forest fragments to pollination and the conservation of biological diversity in the Tarrazu coffee agroecosystems, .

Antananarivo,Madagascar Travel Video - Antananarivo is situated approximately 1,280 m (4,199 ft) above sea level in the central highlands region of the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar, at 18.55' latitude south and 47.32' longitude.[4] The city is located centrally along the north-south axis of the country, and east of center along the east-west axis; it is 160 km (99 mi) away from the eastern coast, and 330 km (210 mi) away from the western coast. The city occupies a commanding position, being built on the summit and slopes of a long and narrow rocky ridge, which extends north and south for about 4 km (2 mi) and rises at its highest point to about 200 m (660 ft) above the extensive rice plain to the west.
Antananarivo (/ˌæntəˌnænəˈriːvoʊ/; Malagasy [antaˈnanaˈrivʷ], from Tanànan'ny Arivolahy), formerly Tananarive (/təˌnænəˈriːv/ or /təˌnɑːnəˈriːv/), is the capital and largest city in Madagascar. It is also known by its French colonial shorthand form Tana. The larger urban area surrounding the city, known as Antananarivo-Renivohitra ("Antananarivo-Mother Hill" or "Antananarivo-Capital"), is the capital of Analamanga Region. The name roughly translates to "City of the Thousand".
Unlike most capital cities in southern Africa, Antananarivo was already a major city before the colonial era. After expelling the Vazimba who inhabited a town at the peak of Analamanga hill, Andrianjaka constructed a rova (fortified royal compound) there that became the site of the royal palaces and the burial place of Merina royalty.[5] Early Merina kings used fanampoana (statute labor) to construct a massive system of irrigated rice paddies and dikes around the city to provide adequate rice for the growing population; the largest of these rice fields, most of which are still producing rice to the present, was called the Betsimitatatra.
Sovereigns addressed the public at the historic town square of Andohalo.
Successive Merina sovereigns ruled over the Kingdom of Imerina from Analamanga through the reign of King Andriamasinavalona. This sovereign renamed the growing city, established the Andohalo town square outside the town gate where all successive sovereigns delivered their royal speeches and announcements to the public, and assigned the names of numerous locations within the city based on the names of similar sites in the nearby village of Antananarivokely.[3] Andriamasinavalona also designated specific territories for the hova (commoners) and each andriana (noble) subcaste, both within the neighborhoods of Antananarivo and in the countryside surrounding the capital. These territorial divisions were strictly enforced: members of subcastes were required to live within their designated territories and were not authorized to stay for extended periods in the territories reserved for others.[7] Numerous fady (taboos) were imposed in the city at various points in time, including injunctions against the construction of wooden houses by non-nobles[8] and the presence of swine within the city limits.
Following Andriamasinavalona's reign, Imerina split into four warring quadrants and Antananarivo was made the capital of the southernmost district.[10] During this 77 year period, the eastern district's capital at Ambohimanga rose in prominence.[11] The last king of Ambohimanga, Andrianampoinimerina, successfully conquered Antananarivo in 1793[12] and reunited the provinces of Imerina, putting an end to nearly eight decades of civil war. He shifted the kingdom's political capital back to Antananarivo in 1794,[13] but declared Ambohimanga the kingdom's spiritual capital, a role it maintains to the present day.[14] He created a major marketplace in Analakely, establishing the city's economic center.

Madagascar Travel Guide: Where to Meet a Lemur Or Other inhabitants of Madagascar While Traveling
The island nation of Madagascar is located in the Indian Ocean not far from the eastern coast of Africa. Rumor has it that the island was once part of the mainland, but later broke away and went into the ocean. Malagasy nature, thousands of years evolving in complete isolation, achieved unprecedented wealth and diversity: 90% of species of native flora and fauna are absolutely unique and not found anywhere else is not Earth. Therefore, among the main attractions of Madagascar especially note its natural wealth: national parks, lakes and waterfalls, mountains and caves.
In the north, near the town of Antsiranana Madagascar stretch of land of the national park of the same name. The highlight of the area - bright limestone formations of different shapes, towering over the sea at a few tens of meters. Tsing painted in orange and bright red color and clearly stand out against the background of lush greenery. Similar in structure and landscapes found on the west coast of the island in the National Park Tsingy de Bemaraha. It pointed stone spiers together form some semblance of the forest. So called reserve in the people - "Stone Forest".
The western part of the island is remarkable reserve Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, where 155 km2 concentrated group of long (30 m) pointed needles limestone. This species can be observed only from outside - locals claim that the reserve is difficult to find a piece of flat land to put his foot.
A more picturesque and hospitable small Berent Reserve, located in the south of the island. It is home of the colony one of the world's largest fruit bats, a wonderful impression on the lemurs who feel the visitors more than arrogant. Lemoore necessarily "build" you with their strange orange eyes. Look, do not fall into this trap!
Madagascar finally win connoisseurs thanks to thousands of species of orchids National Park Montagne d'Ambra in the north of the island.
In the area of safe conditions Morondava growing six kinds of baobab. It is interesting that in Africa today is preserved only one. The rainy season in Madagascar is not as long lasting as in other tropical regions. Island plants, of course, adapted to this: the trees accumulate water during the rainy season, and then feed water supplies eight months - until the next season.

Near the busy capital, Antananarivo, is Ambohimanga, a hillside complex of royal palaces and burial grounds, as well as the “Avenue of the Baobabs,” a dirt road lined by massive centuries-old trees.
