In this opening episode, Dan, Anita and Robert try commuting Mumbai-style, tackling 'super dense crush load' on the world's busiest commuter trains. With as many as 14 people crushed into a square metre, these trains are more than twice as crammed as the most crowded UK trains. Passengers hang from the sides of trains and cross the tracks, so they're in for quite a ride. John Sergeant heads to Darjeeling's steam-powered hill railway and reveals the historical connection between tea and trains. And our cameras are on board with the astonishing dabba wallahs - a crack team of couriers who deliver 200,000 home-cooked lunches to offices all over Mumbai.

A look over some of the stunning scale model train exhibitions at St Luke's 28th Model Railway show. This time around I was trying to get "Hand Of God" shots as the model railway exhibitors fixed trains after de-railing of crashing. I forgot to pick up the show's info sheet but luckily I found an online draft version. 2. Half Pint Creek, Chris Fraser This is a freelance American outline switching layout in HO scale. It depicts the rather run down Lostan Foundry and is set in rugged terrain on the west coast. All the buildings are scratch built from cardboard and bits from the junk box. 3. Class 38 Pacific Meccano Loco No. 3830, John Thompson This model of the well known class 38 pacific loco of the NSWGR was first built in between 1953 and 1955. It was completely rebuilt in 2003 and every part was overhauled. 5. Electric Car Sheds, Historic Electric Traction This HO scale New South Wales model is based on the now demolished Punchbowl car sheds in Sydney. It showcases the single deck suburban trains commonly remembered as the Red Rattlers. 6. Midway, Ian Williamson This model of a small city is of no particular place and features the CBD and the very efficient tram service from the suburbs. Most of the buildings are by Tomix and Tomy and the trams are from the same makers. 7. Bushtown, Georges River Model Railway Club An N Scale Australian layout that features NSW and Victorian trains and represents a typical branch line in the South West Slopes and Snowy mountains area. The buildings are models of actual structures in NSW. It is DCC controlled using the NCE Powerhouse system. 8. Kidzpower, North Shore Railway Modellers This layout has been developed by the junior modellers and was started in 2013. It had the Bachmann Thomas The Tank tearing up the tracks. 9. Bridport South Western, Peter Betts This unique 4mm scale layout features both standard (18mm) and broad gauge (28mm) tracks. It is set in 1890 and features complicated handmade mixed gauge trackwork that is shared by trains from the London and South Western and Great Western railways. The locomotives and 90% of the rolling stock are scratch built and some are more than 50 years old. There are also many working mechanical devices that add interest to operations. The layout is operated in sync with the recorded commentary. 10. Umatilla Valley Railroad, Milton Brown The Umatilla River Valley and Columbia Plateau are in Western USA. The N Scale Umatilla Valley Railroad is a fictitious short line that connects with the mighty Union pacific Railroad. The model is set in 1950/60’s and features stock from all over western and central USA. 12. Defty, St Luke’s Model Railway Club This is the club’s HO scale modular layout. It allows members to run long trains that may not fit on their smaller home layouts. Despite its size it packs away into a cupboard when not in use. This year it features a mix of Australian, American and British trains. Rob Evans will also be running his OO scale live steamers at regular intervals. As always the Hornby Live Steam did not disappoint. 14. Audreyville, Rob Evans The layout was conceived as a portable layout to take when visiting my granddaughter (who loves Thomas and friends). It unfolds and is designed to be used on the floor with the child able to crawl over it when playing. The buildings are relocatable and all items have been pre-loved. Audrey loves it. Now whats weird is I thought it related to Reverend W. Awdry, creator of Thomas The Tank Engine And Friend. 15. Penguins Halt, Jenny Evans This layout is the “U-Drive” It has an animal theme and has been designed to be fun to watch. Children are welcome to try their hand at driving the trains. 16. Appletree Vale, John Byrne and Lachlan This HO layout was built by the late Peter Legatt of Asquith Model railways and was developed by one of St Lukes junior modelers with assistance from his grandfather. It is a good example of the next step from a basic train set. 17. Thomas Big Loader TOMY, Rick Lovelock This layout is made up of three modules. The train lift scoop and crane are all driven by a single motor unit powered by 1 AA battery. See what Thomas and his friends get up to! 18. Pangbourne Ridge, Rick Lovelock This scenic layout was built by the late Lindsay Dousha and features a narrow gauge – HOe scale logging operation in the steam to diesel transition period. 19. JB Mining, John Bell This freelance layout in Hoe scale features a mine, quarry, crushing plant and cement works. The quarry is reaching the end of its working life and nature is starting to take over again. The local passenger train still runs for workers and tourists. The track winds its way through narrow gorges and tunnels with limited clearance keeping the locos and stock small. After nearly impaling my self of the spikey fence I made it into the tunnel. It's not often you explore an old railway tunnel that still has the tracks down, so although a short tunnel, there's alot more to see. Half way through there's a rather large air shaft. Some parts of the tunnel were quite difficult to film/photograph due to a lack of air, there was alot of floating fog around and the it just caused my torch to create a beam.

This railway comes of the main line east of Gillingham station, by the level crossing (joins facing the coast). It then goes in a large cutting down towards the river, over a bridge over the new road, then that is now where it finishes. It used to go into Gillingham docks (which has now been demolish for new houses to be built on the site). In the 80s the railway went even further than this, it connected up with the tramway at Chatham Dockyard. This railway was last used it the 90s when the nucular waste that had been dumped on St Mary's island was being cleared so that they could build houses there. Hazaribagh has become a centre of attraction these days for its railways tracks. About 10 days ago, few boys first noticed that a part of railway track of under construction Hazaribagh Barkakana line bends in the morning between 8 am and 11 am and comes so closer to each other as they are touching each other. After 3 pm the reverse process starts and by 7 pm they go back to their original places. The village boys observed this phenomenon for some days and then informed about it to their family and other villagers. They too saw this peculiar process of the railway track and then the news spread in Hazaribagh. The site where it is going on everyday is in the Arraria forest area which is near to Baserasam village of Katkamdag block, about 20 km away from Hazaribagh town. For the last 4-5 days this place has turned into a new site of attraction and everyday a large number of people are visiting there to witness the rare event. The hugging of Railway tracks has started a discussion between myths and science. The villagers say that in nearby villages it is a tradition that sheep is sacrificed before the 'Gram Devta' for the start of new work. We have advised the Railway men to do so but they refused. This is a result of that refusal.Some say that the railway track has been constructed after damaging the shelter of a cobra couple that is why the tracks are bending like snakes every day. People have started worshipping cobra couple, which has not yet been seen, at that site. On the other hand people are trying to explain it scientifically but yet no one has come up with any concrete scientific reason. Some say that it is happening due to formation of magnetic field at that particular site because of changes going underground. Some are of opinion that it is due to presence of some magnetic or electric material in the rock on which the track has been laid down while some are linking it with metallurgy. Deputy chief engineer of Railway Hazaribagh division Anil Prakash said that it is happening due to huge difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures. Actually Railway had laid down more than 2 km long track here and for safety purpose they welded the pieces of tracks with each others. The length of a piece of Railway track remains 13 meter. Gap is left between two pieces because in summer a piece enlarges by minimum 6mm to 6 cm. Here neither gap has been left nor have clips been used. Nowadays the maximum temperature is about 30 - 32 degree Celsius while minimum 11-12 degrees. So in morning with the increase of temperature the length starts increasing and at that particular point the piece used is less tolerant than others so it is bending. This argument seems closer to truth as the parallel track also found curved at ends of 2.5 km long track.
