Our project explores the causes and effects of gentrification in Wynwood. Through interviews with developers, gallerists, artists, community leaders, and members of the local Puerto Rican population, we seek to tell the story of how Wynwood went from Miami's oldest Puerto Rican community to its largest art district, and what that means for the future of the neighborhood.
We want people to be aware of the peculiar way in which the neighborhood was gentrified—one of them being the use of street art as a marketing tool. It's a story about Miami in every way possible, from art to culture to economy to community. Our film is a documentation of a unique part of Miami's history that just so happens to be in process right now. Though people have been calling Wynwood the 'Soho of Miami', we've discovered that this simply isn't true, as gentrification in Wynwood occurred in a completely different way, with entirely different motives.
We’ve also discovered that no one actually knows what really happened, have never heard the word gentrification in their lives, and for the most part are blissfully unaware of what has been going on in their own streets. Many people are exploring Wynwood, but no one is asking any of the questions that we are.

Wynwood is a neighborhood in Miami, Florida, United States. It is north of Downtown Miami and Overtown, and adjacent to Edgewater. Wynwood has two major sub-districts, the Wynwood Art District in northern Wynwood, and the Wynwood Fashion District along West 5th Avenue. Wynwood is roughly divided by North 20th Street to the south, I-195 to the north, I-95 to the west and the Florida East Coast Railway to the east.
Wynwood is also referred to as "Little San Juan", and commonly known as "El Barrio" as many Puerto Ricans began immigrating to this Miami neighborhood from the island and northeastern cities in the 1950s.Puerto Rican-owned restaurants, shops, markets and other businesses align the streets of Wynwood. Recently, however, the neighborhood has seen a push towards gentrification with increased investments and developments. The Midtown Miami development built in the mid-2000s, brought renewed attention to the area, and previously abandoned warehouses have begun to be occupied by artists, restaurants, cafés, and lounges. Art and fashion are major elements of Wynwood, as Wynwood has a large fashion and textiles industry, primarily along NW 5th Avenue, in the Wynwood Fashion District.

Marion Mitchell Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison; May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), better known by his stage name John Wayne, was an American film actor, director and producer. An Academy Award-winner, Wayne was among the top box office draws for three decades, and was named the all-time top money-making star. An enduring American icon, he epitomized rugged masculinity and is famous for his demeanor, including his distinctive calm voice, walk, and height.
Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa but his family relocated to the greater Los Angeles area when he was four years old. He found work at local film studios when he lost his football scholarship to USC as a result of a bodysurfing accident. Initially working for the Fox Film Corporation, he mostly appeared in small bit parts. His acting breakthrough came in 1939 with John Ford's Stagecoach, making him an instant star. Wayne would go on to star in 142 pictures, primarily typecast in Western films.
Among his best known films are The Quiet Man (1952), which follows him as an Irish-American boxer and his love affair with a fiery spinster played by Maureen O'Hara; The Searchers (1956), in which he plays a Civil War veteran who seeks out his abducted niece; Rio Bravo (1959), playing a Sheriff with Dean Martin; True Grit (1969), playing a humorous U.S. Marshal who sets out to avenge a man's death in the role that won Wayne an Academy Award; and The Shootist (1976), his final screen performance in which he plays an aging gunslinger battling cancer.

Our project explores the causes and effects of gentrification in Wynwood. Through interviews with developers, gallerists, artists, community leaders, and members of the local Puerto Rican population, we seek to tell the story of how Wynwood went from Miami's oldest Puerto Rican community to its largest art district, and what that means for the future of the neighborhood.
We want people to be aware of the peculiar way in which the neighborhood was gentrified—one of them being the use of street art as a marketing tool. It's a story about Miami in every way possible, from art to culture to economy to community. Our film is a documentation of a unique part of Miami's history that just so happens to be in process right now. Though people have been calling Wynwood the 'Soho of Miami', we've discovered that this simply isn't true, as gentrification in Wynwood occurred in a completely different way, with entirely different motives.
We’ve also discovered that no one actually knows what really happened, have never heard the word gentrification in their lives, and for the most part are blissfully unaware of what has been going on in their own streets. Where to begin with Wynwood?! This used to be the worst neighborhood in Miami, but today, it's one of THEE most inspiring art spaces in the country! Art Basel is held here, after all - no biggie. Wynwood's murals extend for blocks and blocks, all covered by ahhhmazing graffiti art by Miami artists. Some have called the entire Wynwood area an outdoor street art museum, unrivaled by any other in its mix of high-brow artists joining in on the up-and-coming scene and street artists who claimed a wall as their own.
Wynwood is a neighborhood in the City of Miami located north of downtown and roughly bounded by NW 36th Street (North), NW 20th Street (South), I-95 (West) and NE 1st Avenue (East). Gallery nights are held monthly, and the area is bustling during many of the annual art fairs held in Miami.

Wynwood's main attraction is that of a trendy arts hub. The Wynwood Arts District contains over 70 galleries, museums and collections. It is the center of "cool" in Miami right now, drawing in thousands during Art Basel for its pop up parties and galleries and inspiring unusual collaborations between musicians, artists, graphic designers, commercial brands, and all kinds of creative types.
The streets of Wynwood are bustling; the once quiet neighborhood surrounded by warehouses is now in the midst of a gentrified renaissance. Enjoy clever plates of food al fresco in a café or scope out the Wynwood Walls, a giant set of outdoor murals decorated by some of street art's most famous names including Shepard Fairey of the Obama Hope poster fame. Some have called the entire Wynwood area an outdoor street art museum, unrivaled by any other in its mix of high-brow artists joining in on the up-and-coming scene and street artists who claimed a wall as their own.
Wynwood is a neighborhood in the City of Miami located north of downtown and roughly bounded by NW 36th Street (North), NW 20th Street (South), I-95 (West) and NE 1st Avenue (East). Gallery nights are held monthly, and the area is bustling during many of the annual art fairs held in Miami.

Where to begin with Wynwood?! This used to be the worst neighborhood in Miami, but today, it's one of THEE most inspiring art spaces in the country! Art Basel is held here, after all - no biggie. Wynwood's murals extend for blocks and blocks, all covered by ahhhmazing graffiti art by Miami artists. I filmed this by myself over three hours, and took about one day to edit - and this isn't even the half of it. Any trip to Miami must - MUST! - include a stop to Wynwood. No excuses! When did I start travelling?
I began to travel properly a few months after I graduated university in 2012. I booked a one way ticket to Australia and the fun began from there!
How do I fund my travels?
I normally apply for a work/travel visa in the country I am spending the majority of my time, I will then work for several months in a row, save up money and then disappear for a few months when I have the cash! I am also blessed enough to have made some really good friends on a lot a of my previous travels, this normally means I have a place to crash!
What did I do before I began travelling?
Before I started travelling I gained a BSc in Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation, I intended to use my degree to get into Law school and become a Lawyer! That was all until I discovered road trips and wanderlust!
Do I have any previous experience in Film or Photography?
No! Everything I know I learned on the go! It really is the best way! Hands on knowledge in filming and editing really cannot be beaten.
How do I start travelling?
Just pack up and go! It really is the only way! If you keep telling yourself you're waiting for the perfect moment to travel, 10 years will pass and you'll realise you never did, adventure really doesn't wait!
