ULTRAS GENOA - BEST MOMENTS
Key Ultra Groups: Fossa dei Grifoni (Griffins Den), Via Armenia 5r (5r Armenia Street), Ottavio Barbiera, Vecchi Orsi (Old Bears).
Other Ultra/Fan Groups: Brigata Speloncia (Speloncia Brigade), Figgi do Zena (Dialect for Figli di Genova – Sons of Genoa), Ragazzi Certosa (Certosa boys), Ragazze Certosa (Certosa Girls), South Group, Old Block, Sette Setembre (7th of September), Vecchia Sestri (Old Sestri), Superbi Zena (Pride of Genova)
In the 1990s, during the Derby della Lanterna - Derby of the Lighthouse, the red and blue half of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris unveiled a striscione reading “WE ARE GENOA”. It was a banner of mammoth proportions engulfing all the supporters in Genoa’s Gradinata Nord – a flight of steps resembling the end of an English stadium rather than an orthodox Italian Curva. That the Luigi Ferraris (or Marassi) appears anglicised and the banner itself was in English is entirely appropriate. It was a declaration of pride in the club’s long history, history which started in 1893 when British Consular officials set up the Genoa Cricket and Football Club. It also served as a mocking reminder to their opponents and city rivals Sampdoria, born 53 years later in 1946. Genoa was the club with the prestigious footballing past, both as the oldest team in Italy and as the beating heart of the city itself.
Wedged between the Ligurian Sea and the Apennine Mountains the city of Genoa is a sight to behold. Steeped in history and cultural splendour, the Genovese take fierce pride in their city, hence its nickname ‘La Superba’ – ‘The Superb’ or ‘The Proud City’. They are also known to be tough, resourceful and reserved. However when the weekend arrives and the Grifoni (Griffins) grace the Luigi Ferraris, this reticent nature is lost in a tumultuous atmosphere which can produce some of the most spectacular Tifo (fandom) Italy has to offer.
“If you speak about trophies in Italy, the teams that have become legend are Juventus, Inter and Milan but if you speak instead about fandom, it is the Gradinata Nord of the Marassi that is legend.” – Marco Liguori (www.pianetagenoa1893.net)
The history of Genoa’s support is inextricably linked with the formation of their first Ultra group Fossa dei Grifoni (Griffins Den - FdG) in 1973. Fossa was part of the supporters group Ottavio Barbieri, (A former Genoa player, 6th in all time appearances for the club). Both groups were born out of a dark era in the clubs history which saw the team languishing in Serie C. FdG embodied the soul and ancestry of Genoa, combining British characteristics of sustained organised chanting with the breathtaking choreographies of Italian tifo. Having established a real sense of unity, the Ultras heyday came in the late 1980’s to early 90’s when Coach Osvaldo Bagnoli led the Rossoblu to a fourth place finish in Serie A and European qualification. Genoa’s trip to face Liverpool in the quarter final of the 1992 UEFA Cup is fondly remembered for the vociferous and powerful support which matched the Anfield faithful, to the extent that the Genoani (Genoa supporters) were applauded by the Liverpool fans at the final whistle.
In 1993 protests against the then president Aldo Spinelli as well as strained relationships with the local press and police saw the FdGdisband. Former members dispersed and joined groups such as Ottavio Barbieri while others created splinter groups like Vecchi Orsi (Old Bears). Now Via Armenia 5r (5r Armenia Street), who are accompanied by the banner “You’ll never walk alone” are the vanguard of the Gradinata Nord among a legion of other groups. I Figgi do Zena (Dialect for Sons of Genoa) also produce some impressive choreography having taken their place in a section of the ground which traditionally has a more serene atmosphere.
Unfortunately this zealous fanaticism can lead to ignominious acts of violence.
On January the 29th, 1995, a match between Genoa and AC Milan was marred by tragedy after Genoa supporter Vincenzo Claudio Spagnolo was fatally stabbed. The culprit, Simone Brasaglia was a member of AC Milan’s notoriously violent fringe Ultra group known as Barbour Gang (a reference to the British styled coats they wore). When news spread of the stabbing the game was cancelled at half time and riots broke out around the Marassi with Genoani seeking vengeance...

Génova - Italia

Genoa is the capital of Liguria and the sixth largest city in Italy, with a population of 604,848 within its administrative limits on a land area of 243.6 km2 (94 sq mi). The urban zone of Genoa extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of 718,896. The urban area of Genoa has a population of 800,709. Over 1.5 million people live in the metropolitan area. Genoa is one of Europe's largest cities on the Mediterranean Sea and the largest seaport in Italy. Genoa has been nicknamed la Superba ("the Proud one") due to its glorious past and impressive landmarks. Part of the old town of Genoa was inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006 (see below). The city's rich art, music, gastronomy, architecture and history allowed it to become the 2004 European Capital of Culture. It is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. Genoa, which forms the southern corner of the Milan-Turin-Genoa industrial triangle of north-west Italy, is one of the country's major economic centres. The city has hosted massive shipyards and steelworks since the 19th century, and its solid financial sector dates back to the Middle Ages. The Bank of Saint George, founded in 1407, is among the oldest in the world and has played an important role in the city's prosperity since the middle of the 15th century. Today a number of leading Italian companies are based in the city, including Fincantieri, Ansaldo Energia, Ansaldo STS, Edoardo Raffinerie Garrone and Piaggio Aero.

Last Stop in Genoa
I’m always thinking about how Europe looks so pretty in people's photo collections, video clips, and even in their memories. But I like the gritty and candid dimensions of Europe that are simply unpolished reality, too. Here’s an impromptu clip of me sharing my last, lousy lunch in Italy while changing trains in Genoa. Two minutes later, I was on my way to France.

A Day Trip to Genoa, Nevada
If you’ve run out of things to do in Reno, try taking a day trip to the historic city of Genoa, Nevada. As Nevada’s oldest settlement, the village offers an assortment of historic buildings, a ‘thirst parlor’, and interesting people.

Italian Food: Tre Merli Restaurant at Genoa | Italia Slow Tour
Come to Genoa and taste traditional cuisine from Liguria at "Tre Merli" restaurant. Try some typical dishes made of local fishes: discover "Cappon Magro", a fishermen's old recipe, and taste some chowder with "gallette" bread, and Italian Vermentino wine. Some kind of "poor cuisine", made with simple ingredients with a great and tasty result!

Genoa: a sightseeing artistic walk | Italia Slow Tour
An artistic walk through the historic area of Genoa, Via Garibaldi, World Heritage since 2006. It was created in the 16th century as a street of representation, with all rich buildings of the nobility. Just like the building named by Tobia Pallavicino, which contains frescos and gilded rooms in the Baroque style, like it were a small Versailles!

The gritty maze of the medieval city that makes up the core of Genoa is both beauty and the beast. The grandeur and heritage of this once great trading city lives side by side with modern vice and decrepitude. The odious smelling alleys give way to modern and chic restaurants and shops. Genoa is one of the most difficult of cities to describe and is very different from more generally travelled Italian cities like Rome, Florence or Venice.

Travel Guide - Monterosso Beach - Cinque Terre Italy
Information on how to get to Cinque Terre Italy and Monterosso Beach:
Cinque Terre is along the southwest coast of Italy, just north of another favorite Italy travel destination, The Amalfi Coast. To get to Cinque Terre, there are many ways to get there, but we suggest you fly into Genoa (Genovo), then take the Trenitalia (Treno or Train), southbound into Cinque Terre. There is not an actual town called "Cinque Terre". Cinque Terre is made up of five beautiful beach towns, starting from North going South; Levanto, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monarola. The only two towns that have beaches are Levanto and Monterosso with Monterosso being the most lively and have the most to offer. As you can see from this video there are beautiful beach girls, beach side hotels and beach front cafe's to be enjoyed.

Two minutes later, I was on my way to France.

when I first saw the "Under the tucsan Sun trailer" I knew that I need to discover Toscana or Tuscany as the Italian folk says (Travel Channel Tuscany)... today after visiting Rome, Bologna, Genova, Sardinia, Florence, Verona, Venezia, Firenze, Pisa, Siena, Livorno, Padova, Viareggio, Lucca, Volterra, Chianti Barberino val de Elsa and San Gimignano ...so I decided to create this travel guide video for you! And I'm pretty excited to guide you through one of the most beautiful countries of Europe. In this video I introduce you Tuscany in Italy-The Charmed Land and the Dolce Vita Under the Tuscan Sun.
To sum up here are 10 things you should do in Tuscany:
1: sleep in a typical Tuscan Villa or Middle age like castle in Tuscany like "Villa Pitiana"
2: visit traditional italian cities like "Barberino val de Elsa" and enjoy the dolce vita
3: enjoy the view: like me in San Gimignano, Italy's Towering Hill Town
4: breath in the culture, make a guided tour in Florence (Firenze) and explore the Galleria dell Academia, make a walk on Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, check out the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the Baptistery, or discover the view from thr Campanile - Bell Tower. There are so many tourist attractions in Florence...you won't believe your eyes when crossing the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Oh and make sure to visit Boboli Garden and Pitti Palace formal seat of the Medici family. I fall in love with it as you can see in my video
5-6: Taste Tuscany: discover the Tuscan kitchen and delicious italian gastronomy. Tuscany Food and Wine Tours are famous...you should try tuscan receipts and attend a vine testing on the Tuscan hills..
7: Italy is the home of fast sport cars, like Maranello :Ferrari. My boyfriend chose to make a Lamborghini gallardo e-gear test.
8: Visit Pisa and take a photo holding the Pisa tower (Torre di Pisa)
9: Beach is waiting! If you are in Italy make sure to take some days to relax on the beach. We spent some time in Viareggio
10: realize that you need to come back to learn more about the 100 faces of Italy
