JuanPaul Comments: This was the album cover art Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had proposed for Rumors. Mick wasn’t too keen on it. Good to see it’s been re-purposed.

Cat people with 80’s hair. Now I can die in peace.

I have nothing bad to say about a person who wrote a book called It Seemed Like a Good Idea. All I want to know is, why are you guarding an integer?

Performance anxiety issues are written all over cat dude’s face.

I don’t even know what to joke about… this is just purrrfect. Haha Get it?
I always said I could rest easy if we found a cover to challenge the greatness of I Sing the Body Electric. Today… I think we have a contender!
EDIT – Though looking at the ratings there are two already voted higher! I should have been resting for a while!

What do you suppose the art direction was like? ‘I want two people, maybe cat people, maybe badly-rendered humans. Make them all hunched over, as if they’re riding. But don’t show what it is that they’re riding. Or where they’re going. Or where they’re coming from. Or where they are. Give them hair, big hair, obscuring everything but Fred, my plant over there in the corner. He’s my friend, he is. The people. Dress him in what could be plate armour or leather armour. Dress her in a dress that could be any time from Queen Anne to the end of the Regency, and colour it the colour of my sherbet here on my desk. Background? Oh, right. Put Fred in the background. I want you to paint the sky some time between midnight and dawn, and both cloudy and clear, with a full moon and a rising sun. Wait–wait just a moment–hold that expression! Yes! Go into the WC, and look in the mirror, just like that. Make that his expression. Perfect. And take Fred with you. Fred can model from life.’

@Bibliomancer: Curiously, neither seems very interested.

Even cat people should be concerned about the dangers of botox.

The art style reminds me of those horrendous ‘realistic’ covers for The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:18 pm
@anon – That’s cat-people style.
Him: Grrrreaattt!
Her: Me. Ow.

So much subtle symbolism. May I suggest the tag ‘opposites attract’ to alert people to the delicate emotional nuances deeply embedded behind the soft colors.

What we can’t see is a giant ball of wool off to our left, which is distracting them.
(It occurs to me that, if she wasn’t in the picture, his stance is very much ‘Del-Boy leaning on a bar that isn’t there’.)

You’ve seen covers with some kinds of Cats
And my opinion now is that
You should need no interpreter
To understand their character.
You’ve GSS’d enough to see
That Cats are much like you and me
And other people whom we find
Possessed of various types of mind.
For some are sane and some are mad
And some are good and some are bad
And some are better, some are worse–
These are just awful.
(with apologies to T. S. Elliot)

The cat guy kind of looks like Mark Hamill. Just saying.
December 2nd, 2015 at 8:52 pm
This cover has PATHOS written all over it.
“Somewhere, my love… somewhere out there is a world for us. With a ball of yarn… some people we can ignore… and a mouse we can torture to death!”
[Background music: “To dream… the impossible dream…”]

Stevie Nicks needs more catnip. Beauty and the Beast: the historical chronicles. Andrew Lloyd Weber demands royalties.

LORD OF FUR BALLS
January 24th, 2017 at 10:39 pm
I do believe these two be two mrem, Sruss at left and Talwe at right. Someone please issue the author some orthography.
January 25th, 2017 at 2:22 am
@DSWBT: also apparently, Bill came up with this crap and then farmed it out to some poor sod called Neil Randal to slog through all the kitty litter and bad orthography.

@DSWBT(#3):
I’m surprised it’s taken so long to answer your question – it’s because Three Is A Magic Number!

The dog-people spinoff is called Guardians of the Tree.
October 25th, 2017 at 7:49 am
Discuss:
– was Neil Randall better off NOT having his name on this cover?
– how did they clean and comb those perms with just their tongues?
– and how large were the hairballs afterwards?
– why do they have the built-up tissue on the upper lip suitable for whiskers, and yet have no whiskers?
– should they also yiff in hell?
October 25th, 2017 at 6:08 pm
I just learned what yiff means.
Why, oh why, did I look that up?
October 25th, 2017 at 7:22 pm
@Tor: goodness, if you’ve been on the Internet for more than five minutes you should know better than to use it for information retrieval.
October 26th, 2017 at 2:09 am
Oh dear, I’ve injured Tor.
I’d no idea we had any innocents among us.
I did mean to say, of course “should they also yiff in hell, like Myhrrrrr?”
October 26th, 2017 at 4:07 am
DSWBT: I love words, so I always look up news ones that I find. You think I’d have learned by now.
Then again, I’ll probably use this one the next time a furry cover is posted.
GSSxN: Nuh-uh. Fool me twice, shame on me.
October 26th, 2017 at 10:20 pm
@Tor Mented: I do sincerely apologize.
Somewhat recently, there was a cover posted here about a lion-man named Myrr. Or Myhr. Or something like that. It was, of course, from BAEN!meow and apparently consists of fanfic about the cover artist’s furry alter ego. I was attempting a callback to that.
There was no actual yiffing involved, honest. Just bad cover art and ego.
October 27th, 2017 at 5:37 am
@GSSxn: Lol, no apologies needed. Just kidding.
I actually came across the David Bowie catman while browsing through the Baen tags and immediately knew it was the one you mentioned.
October 27th, 2017 at 6:58 am
@Tor: He’s actually a Ron Perlman rip-off.
Yes, not only does Baen have terrible covers, they publish and expect money for furry fanfic. With terrible covers.
