On 3 July 1938, the A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record - 75 years later, the National Railway Museum has been been marking the 75th anniversary of this with a series of commemorative events.
The finale was 'The Great Goodbye', held at Shildon in County Durham. This was the last time to see all 6 surviving A4s together, before 'Dominion of Canada' and 'Dwight D. Eisenhower' returned to their homes in Canada and the United States.
I was extremely lucky to get tickets to one of the evening photography sessions, and took this video. I hope you like it.

A few shots of A4 no.4468, Mallard on railtours in 1988. I had intended to post this video in time for the
70th.anniversary of the record run in July but misplaced one of the master tapes. The loco is seen at York followed by some on train footage on the Settle & Carlisle and then at Carlisle. Lineside shots taken in the Hope Valley,the Standedge route and on the Settle & Carlisle. Recorded on standard VHS video and before I discovered that a fluid head tripod was a good investment so not top quality!!!

A Video/Documentary retelling the story of the moment in 1938 when the Gresley designed
Streamlined A4 Pacific "Mallard" set the world speed record for a Steam Locomotive
in Great Britain, (which has never been challenged since).
The Train hauled 200 Tons comprising of 6 Carriages and one Dynamometer car which was
crucial in accurately recording such things as Speed, Boiler Water & Coal Consumption
Drawbar pulling capacity, Braking Efficiency, Etc, Etc, but the record came at a high
price, as due to a design fault oversight the centre of the three crankshaft main bearing's
overheated melting the white metal Bearing Construction.
Driver Joe Duddington & Fireman Thomas Bray immediately brought the train to a halt
and the locomotive was returned to the workshops for Big End Re-Metal-ling and brought back in to service in little over a week later.
This Locomotive takes pride of place at the York Railway Museum and is occasionally steam
raised to pull special excursion trains on main line working as are others among this
famous collection of preserved British Rail Locomotives & Rolling stock.

Seventy five years ago a world record, still unmatched, was achieved by a steam engine called Mallard.
For just a couple of minutes the locomotive thundered along at speeds of 126 miles per hour on a stretch of track just south of Grantham.
To mark the occasion the engine will be reunited with five of its sister locomotives at the National Railway Museum in York, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world.

Transcript: "The Mallard is found around the world in North America, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.
This waterfowl prefers calm, shallow water in wetlands, small ponds and rivers. The Mallard is a dabbling duck which means that it feeds while floating on the surface of the water as opposed to diving for its meals. It feed mainly on aquatic vegetation, but will also eat insects.
This duck, along with the Muscovy Duck, are believed to be the ancestors of all domestic ducks.
The male, which is known as a drake, has a distinct green head with a yellowish-orange bill, while the female has a more natural light brown coat and dark brown bill.
Mating pairs will stay together until the female lays eggs. soon after, the male will leave.
Newly hatched ducklings are precocial which means they can swim and feed themselves from the moment they leave the eggs."

As a personal tribute to a legendary achievement exactly 75 years ago, I thought it appropriate to indulge in this little demonstration. Using the footage I captured a couple of weeks ago and adjusting replay speed over a measured 1 mile to 28.6 seconds, we can re-create the image of 60009 Union of South Africa running at an apparent 126 m.p.h. As a comparison I have included images of simulated 75 and 90 m.p.h. to demonstrate just how impressive a speed of 125.88 m.p.h. (to be exact) is for a steam locomotive. The removed streamlining of the B.R. form of A4 shows the motion fully exposed and demonstrates that the limiting factors for speed on a conventional steam locomotive are not just that of overcoming drag but (and maybe more importantly) the survival of motion bearings trying to cope with the extreme out-of-balance forces at such high rotational accelerations. In fact, aniseed was mixed in with the bearing lubricating oil on Mallards record run of 3rd July 1938 in order to produce a "nasal" warning if bearings overheated! 126 m.p.h. may not seem to be particularly high in terms of "record" speeds on today's railway but remember that this record was set way back in 1938 and hopefully after viewing this clip you, like me, will appreciate a little more just how exceptional that achievement was.

Calebtrain did an incredible job helping me with these projects and I couldn't be more grateful. Here we have an LNER class A4 (soon to be numbered "4468" that will have a role in the "Enterprising Engines" saga in the future! All the customs went very well, but I think the Mallard is my favorite.

The Mallard (
/ˈmælɑrd/ or /ˈmælərd/), or Wild Duck (Anas platyrhynchos), is a dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to New Zealand and Australia.
The male birds have a bright green or blue head, while the female's is light brown. The Mallard lives in wetlands, eats water plants, and is gregarious. The Mallard is the ancestor of most domestic ducks, and can interbreed with other species of genus Anas. Among close relatives of the Mallard this hybridisation can cause genetic dilution, which is contributing to the decline of rarer species of ducks.
The Mallard was one of the many bird species originally described by Linnaeus in his 18th century work, Systema Naturae, and still bears the first binomial name it was given.
The Mallard is the ancestor of almost all of the varieties of domestic ducks, others being descended from the Muscovy Duck and American Black Duck. Ducks belong to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae.

Mallard was the name of a band featuring ex-members of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. In early 1974, after the recording of the uncharacteristically mainstream Unconditionally Guaranteed album, Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (Rockette Morton) and Art Tripp III (Ed Marimba) had finally had enough of working with Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet). They formed Mallard, with Sam Galpin on vocals and Rabbit Bundrick on keyboards, releasing their eponymous first album in 1975, with logistical support from Ian Anderson, who financed the recording using his mobile recording unit on his English estate. John French (Drumbo) was originally involved with the band, and co-wrote some songs. In 1976 they released their second and last album, In a Different Climate, and performed some concerts in the UK. George Draggota now played drums, with John Thomas on keyboards. Thomas was briefly involved in The Magic Band, and in the early 1960s had been in Rattlesnake and Eggs with John French. Despite the principal members' years together and unique musical abilities, as well as support from the British musical press, Mallard never achieved commercial success. In 1994, both LPs by Mallard were released on CD by Virgin Records in the UK and in the USA. -

On 3 July 1938, the A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record - 75 years later, the National Railway Museum has been been marking the 75th anniversary of this with a series of commemorative events. The finale was 'The Great Goodbye', held at Shildon in County Durham. This was the last time to see all 6 surviving A4s together, before 'Dominion of Canada' and 'Dwight D. Eisenhower' returned to their homes in Canada and the United States. I was extremely lucky to get tickets to one of the evening photography sessions, and took this video. I hope you like it. -

A few shots of A4 no.4468, Mallard on railtours in 1988. I had intended to post this video in time for the 70th.anniversary of the record run in July but misplaced one of the master tapes. The loco is seen at York followed by some on train footage on the Settle & Carlisle and then at Carlisle. Lineside shots taken in the Hope Valley,the Standedge route and on the Settle & Carlisle. Recorded on standard VHS video and before I discovered that a fluid head tripod was a good investment so not top quality!!! -

The Train hauled 200 Tons comprising of 6 Carriages and one Dynamometer car which was crucial in accurately recording such things as Speed, Boiler Water & Coal Consumption Drawbar pulling capacity, Braking Efficiency, Etc, Etc, but the record came at a high price, as due to a design fault oversight the centre of the three crankshaft main bearing's overheated melting the white metal Bearing Construction. "Mallard 75" An A4 Pacific Steam Locomotive at 126 m.p.h. What did it look like?
As a personal tribute to a legendary achievement exactly 75 years ago, I thought it appropriate to indulge in this little demonstration. Using the footage I captured a couple of weeks ago and adjusting replay speed over a measured 1 mile to 28.6 seconds, we can re-create the image of 60009 Union of South Africa running at an apparent 126 m.p.h. As a comparison I have included images of simulated 75 and 90 m.p.h. to demonstrate just how impressive a speed of 125.88 m.p.h. (to be exact) is for a steam locomotive. The removed streamlining of the B.R. form of A4 shows the motion fully exposed and demonstrates that the limiting factors for speed on a conventional steam locomotive are not just that of overcoming drag but (and maybe more importantly) the survival of motion bearings trying to cope... -

Mallard was the name of a band featuring ex-members of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. In early 1974, after the recording of the uncharacteristically mainstream Unconditionally Guaranteed album, Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (Rockette Morton) and Art Tripp III (Ed Marimba) had finally had enough of working with Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet). They formed Mallard, with Sam Galpin on vocals and Rabbit Bundrick on keyboards, releasing their eponymous first album in 1975, with logistical support from Ian Anderson, who financed the recording using his mobile recording unit on his English estate. 70th.anniversary of the record run in July but misplaced one of the master tapes. The loco is seen at York followed by some on train footage on the Settle & Carlisle and then at Carlisle. Lineside shots taken in the Hope Valley,the Standedge route and on the Settle & Carlisle. Recorded on standard VHS video and before I discovered that a fluid head tripod was a good investment so not top quality!!!

A Video/Documentary retelling the story of the moment in 1938 when the Gresley designed
Streamlined A4 Pacific "Mallard" set the world speed record for a Steam Locomotive
in Great Britain, (which has never been challenged since).
The Train hauled 200 Tons comprising of 6 Carriages and one Dynamometer car which was
crucial in accurately recording such things as Speed, Boiler Water & Coal Consumption
Drawbar pulling capacity, Braking Efficiency, Etc, Etc, but the record came at a high
price, as due to a design fault oversight the centre of the three crankshaft main bearing's
overheated melting the white metal Bearing Construction.
Driver Joe Duddington & Fireman Thomas Bray immediately brought the train to a halt
and the locomotive was returned to the workshops for Big End Re-Metal-ling and brought back in to service in little over a week later.
This Locomotive takes pride of place at the York Railway Museum and is occasionally steam
raised to pull special excursion trains on main line working as are others among this
famous collection of preserved British Rail Locomotives & Rolling stock.

This waterfowl prefers calm, shallow water in wetlands, small ponds and rivers. The Mallard is a dabbling duck which means that it feeds while floating on the surface of the water as opposed to diving for its meals. It feed mainly on aquatic vegetation, but will also eat insects.
This duck, along with the Muscovy Duck, are believed to be the ancestors of all domestic ducks.
The male, which is known as a drake, has a distinct green head with a yellowish-orange bill, while the female has a more natural light brown coat and dark brown bill.
Mating pairs will stay together until the female lays eggs. soon after, the male will leave.
Newly hatched ducklings are precocial which means they can swim and feed themselves from the moment they leave the eggs."

As a personal tribute to a legendary achievement exactly 75 years ago, I thought it appropriate to indulge in this little demonstration. Using the footage I cap...
As a personal tribute to a legendary achievement exactly 75 years ago, I thought it appropriate to indulge in this little demonstration. Using the footage I captured a couple of weeks ago and adjusting replay speed over a measured 1 mile to 28.6 seconds, we can re-create the image of 60009 Union of South Africa running at an apparent 126 m.p.h. As a comparison I have included images of simulated 75 and 90 m.p.h. to demonstrate just how impressive a speed of 125.88 m.p.h. (to be exact) is for a steam locomotive. The removed streamlining of the B.R. form of A4 shows the motion fully exposed and demonstrates that the limiting factors for speed on a conventional steam locomotive are not just that of overcoming drag but (and maybe more importantly) the survival of motion bearings trying to cope with the extreme out-of-balance forces at such high rotational accelerations. In fact, aniseed was mixed in with the bearing lubricating oil on Mallards record run of 3rd July 1938 in order to produce a "nasal" warning if bearings overheated! 126 m.p.h. may not seem to be particularly high in terms of "record" speeds on today's railway but remember that this record was set way back in 1938 and hopefully after viewing this clip you, like me, will appreciate a little more just how exceptional that achievement was.

Mallard was the name of a band featuring ex-members of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.
In early 1974, after the recording of the uncharacteristically mainstream Unconditionally Guaranteed album, Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (Rockette Morton) and Art Tripp III (Ed Marimba) had finally had enough of working with Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet). They formed Mallard, with Sam Galpin on vocals and Rabbit Bundrick on keyboards, releasing their eponymous first album in 1975, with logistical support from Ian Anderson, who financed the recording using his mobile recording unit on his English estate. John French (Drumbo) was originally involved with the band, and co-wrote some songs.
In 1976 they released their second and last album, In a Different Climate, and performed some concerts in the UK. George Draggota now played drums, with John Thomas on keyboards. Thomas was briefly involved in The Magic Band, and in the early 1960s had been in Rattlesnake and Eggs with John French.
Despite the principal members' years together and unique musical abilities, as well as support from the British musical press, Mallard never achieved commercial success.
In 1994, both LPs by Mallard were released on CD by Virgin Records in the UK and in the USA.

A HUGE thanks to Caleb for sending in this beautiful locomotive to the IC82 channel. Unfortunately, when she arrived, a trip to Crewe Works was required in order to restore her to running condition. It took several days and some soldering but she's as good as new!

Mallard was the name of a band featuring ex-members of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.
In early 1974, after the recording of the uncharacteristically mainstream Unconditionally Guaranteed album, Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo), Mark Boston (Rockette Morton) and Art Tripp III (Ed Marimba) had finally had enough of working with Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet). They formed Mallard, with Sam Galpin on vocals and Rabbit Bundrick on keyboards, releasing their eponymous first album in 1975, with logistical support from Ian Anderson, who financed the recording using his mobile recording unit on his English estate. John French (Drumbo) was originally involved with the band, and co-wrote some songs.
In 1976 they released their second and last album, In a Different Climate, and performed some concerts in the UK. George Draggota now played drums, with John Thomas on keyboards. Thomas was briefly involved in The Magic Band, and in the early 1960s had been in Rattlesnake and Eggs with John French.
Despite the principal members' years together and unique musical abilities, as well as support from the British musical press, Mallard never achieved commercial success.
In 1994, both LPs by Mallard were released on CD by Virgin Records in the UK and in the USA.
