Snowdon Walk - Pyg Track / Miner's Track - Snowdonia

Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is 1085m at its summit and has some of the best views in the UK which are reached using several well used paths. This was a walk we made up to the summit from Pen-y-Pass using the Pyg Track to ascend and the Miner's Track to come back down. We went up on the 25th May 2012 starting at about 9am, and got to the top at about 12.15pm. Weather was absolutely fantastic, no clouds, and the views were outstanding. However, I did get eaten alive by the midges which were crowding around the people at the summit. Will definitely be back to Snowdonia and Snowdon. Snowdon Horseshoe Via Crib Goch

One of Britain's favourite hill-walks, the Snowdon Horseshoe involves some exposed ridge walking and fabulous airy scrambling to reach the highest mountain in Wales. In the weather we had, it was a truly exhilarating experience and there was even time for a very leisurely lunch at the Hafod Eryri Summit Shelter where we feasted on Welsh oggies and Snowdon beer! The second part of the horseshoe descends over the steep and slippery Watkin Path and then traverses the equally impressive ridge and twin peaks of Y Lliwedd giving fantastic views of the gaping chasm of Cwm Uchaf with its mysterious lake, Llyn Glas, and the twin lakes of Llyn Llydaw. It was possible to see the tiny silhouettes of people tackling the knife edge arête on Crib Goch. A steep path involving some mild scrambling leads down to the shore of Lyn Llydaw where it eventually joins the Miners' Track back to Pen y Pass car park.

Our video shows our ascent of Snowdon via the Watkin Path. This is the longest route to the summit and definitely not the easiest route. The walk starts in Nant Gwynant and continues through the picturesque Cwm Llan before climbing the lower slopes of Y Lliwedd towards the summit of Yr Wyddfa, - Snowdon, Bear in mind it was a particularly fine day, not a typical mountain day by any means. It is classed as a hard mountain walk and the last section to the summit is particularly hard going. Snowdonia (Welsh: Eryri) is a region in north Wales and a national park of 823 square miles (2,130 km2) in area. It was the first to be designated of the three national parks in Wales, in 1951.The English name for the area derives from Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560 ft (1,085 m). In Welsh, the area is named Eryri. One assumption is that the name is derived from eryr ("eagle"), but others state that it means quite simply Highlands, as leading Welsh scholar Sir Ifor Williams proved.[1] In the Middle Ages the title Prince of Wales and Lord of Snowdonia (Tywysog Cymru ac Arglwydd Eryri) was used by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd; his grandfather Llywelyn Fawr used the title Prince of north Wales and Lord of Snowdonia. Prior to the designation of the boundaries of the national park, "Snowdonia" was generally used to refer to a smaller area, namely the upland area of northern Gwynedd centred on the Snowdon massif, whereas the national park covers an area more than twice that size extending far to the south into Meirionnydd. This is apparent in books published prior to 1951 such as the classic travelogue Wild Wales by George Borrow (1862) and The Mountains of Snowdonia by H. Carr & G. Lister (1925). F. J. North, as editor of the book Snowdonia (1949), states "When the Committee delineated provisional boundaries, they included areas some distance beyond Snowdonia proper." The traditional Snowdonia thus includes the ranges of Snowdon and its satellites, the Glyderau, the Carneddau and the Moel Siabod group. It does not include the hills to the south of Maentwrog.
