James Gamble may refer to:
James Gamble (January 28, 1809 – February 22, 1883) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.
James Gamble was born in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and Jersey Shore Academy. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in December 1833 and commenced practice in Jersey Shore. He served as Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, treasurer from 1834 to 1836. He resumed the practice of law in Jersey Shore, and served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1841 and 1842.
Gamble was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses. He served as president judge of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in 1859 and 1860, and president judge of the court of common pleas of Lycoming County from 1868 to 1878. He died in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 1883. Interment in Wildwood Cemetery.
James Gamble (April 3, 1803 – April 29, 1891) was an Irish-born American soap maker and industrialist. He was the co-founder and co-eponym of Procter & Gamble Company in 1837, along with William Procter.
Gamble was born near Enniskillen in present-day Northern Ireland and went to Portora Royal School.
Gamble went into business with Wiliam Procter after they became related by marriage. Gamble's wife Elizabeth Ann Norris was the sister of Procter's wife Olivia Norris. The pair's father-in-law, Alexander Norris, first suggested that the two go into business together in 1837 and consequently Procter & Gamble was born.
Gamble died on April 29, 1891 from natural causes. He is interred in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
Procter, who preceded his partner Gamble in death, is also buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.
Gamble and Elizabeth Ann (Norris) Gamble had ten children, including James Norris Gamble (August 9, 1836 - July 2, 1932) who became Vice President of Procter & Gamble and was the chemist who devised the formula for Ivory soap. James Norris Gamble married Margaret Penrose; he died in his sleep on July 2, 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio and is interred in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
