A lava tube is a natural conduit formed by flowing lava which moves beneath the hardened surface of a lava flow. Tubes can be actively draining lava from a volcano during an eruption, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased and the rock has cooled and left a long, cave-like channel.
Lava tubes are a type of lava cave formed when an active low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still-flowing lava stream. Tubes form in one of two ways: by the crusting over of lava channels, and from pāhoehoe flows where the lava is moving under the surface.
Lava usually leaves the point of eruption in channels. These channels tend to stay very hot as their surroundings cool. This means they slowly develop walls around them as the surrounding lava cools and/or as the channel melts its way deeper. These channels can get deep enough to crust over, forming an insulating tube that keeps the lava molten and serves as a conduit for the flowing lava. These types of lava tubes tend to be closer to the lava eruption point.
Lava is the molten rock expelled by a volcano during an eruption. The resulting rock after solidification and cooling is also called lava. The molten rock is formed in the interior of some planets, including Earth, and some of their satellites. The source of the heat that melts the rock within the earth is geothermal energy. When first erupted from a volcanic vent, lava is a liquid at temperatures from 700 to 1,200 °C (1,292 to 2,192 °F).
A lava flow is a moving outpouring of lava, which is created during a non-explosive effusive eruption. When it has stopped moving, lava solidifies to form igneous rock. The term lava flow is commonly shortened to lava. Although lava can be up to 100,000 times more viscous than water, lava can flow great distances before cooling and solidifying because of its thixotropic and shear thinning properties.
Explosive eruptions produce a mixture of volcanic ash and other fragments called tephra, rather than lava flows. The word "lava" comes from Italian, and is probably derived from the Latin word labes which means a fall or slide. The first use in connection with extruded magma (molten rock below the Earth's surface) was apparently in a short account written by Francesco Serao on the eruption of Vesuvius between May 14 and June 4, 1737. Serao described "a flow of fiery lava" as an analogy to the flow of water and mud down the flanks of the volcano following heavy rain.

This video shows a great view into the skylight of a very large lava tube. This tube was only 1/4 of a mile from the source of the eruption. Extreme caution must be taken when approaching skylights. Often they expand much further then you can see as for the width. This particular one was right at one of the outer edges. Notice how an upper chamber is flowing down onto the main flow. This is a rare sight. I've had the pleasure of viewing dozens of active skylights in my years of hiking the flows and this is the first I saw doing this and so easily approached. The subtle sounds are what I like most. All clips shot in between strong wind gusts and frequent rain showers. After the night portion of visiting this skylight I made my way to the ancient Puu Kahaualea cinder cone. Lava was hit...
Nov. 1, 2009, Kalapana, Hawaii. Peles Realm Up at 4am, I hiked a grueling 3 miles uphill to where a lava tube had a 'breakout' and was spewing an amazing stream of magma. This, and other surface breakout points were flowing into beautiful rivers and rushing down the 'pali' (slope) towards the ocean. The ground was hot, the heat like a furnace, and I'm sure in places lava was flowing just a few inches beneath my feet. Some would, and have, called me crazy, I consider myself blessed... What a world we live in, I'm going back asap, but no guarantee anything like this will be visible. I hope you enjoy it ! Sorry for the wind noise, I need to learn video editing now...As well as how to use the camera...I'm a still photographer by trade. I do appreciate a comment or at least...
Water from Lost Lake drains down one of the many lava tubes scattered throughout the Central Oregon Cascades. The water is most likely seeping into the subsurface below and refilling the massive aquifer that feeds springs on both sides of the Cascades. The story: j.mp/1aXYVBU.
Taking a dip in very cool Lava tube in Hawaii. Not a very exciting video, just an experience captured. We sure had a good time, is very special place and I am glad it's in such good shape. No garbage, cans, butts etc. around the hole.

Come Caving on the Big Island of Hawaii. Near the summit of Kilauea volcano within a deep rainforest lies an exciting walk underground into a “lava tube”. Lava tubes are caves created as molten lavas pour downhill, later leaving evacuated conduits that sometimes are passable and worth exploring. Nahuku (the Thurston Lava Tube) is one of the easiest to see, fully lit, and a reasonably level stroll (albeit dripping and wet). Nahuku is open to anyone who visits Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Outside the cave you’ll also find some excellent birding; here is the habitat for several native species of Hawaiian forest birds.

Still hot in the valley so I headed up north to a lava tube near Flastaff, AZ on the Coconino National Forest for a little spelunking. Warning use something other than motorcycle boots if you go.
I've got life
one more time
i leave behind just burning bridges
it's a crime
i am here
there must be somewhere i can breathe
now take me there
It's time to see
i wanna make you breathe

i'm gonna make you see
no more make believe

I've got life
you're always on my mind
you gotta believe in something, alright
forever by your side
i've got life
just give me time to find
whatever it is, it will be alright
forever by your side
i've got life
I've got life
What's that sound
my destiny is bound for changes
lost and found
you tell me
there's gonna be a showdown somewhere

It's time to see
i'm gonna make you see
no more make believe
you just go
I've got life
you're always on my mind
you gotta believe in something, alright
