BATTLING PIRATES: Interview with Australian sci-fi director Shane Abbess
Last week saw a small independent Australian film, Sunday, take a small step into history by becoming the first film in this country to get released on cinemas and digital platforms simultaneously.
This week sees another first of sorts, with the release of Australian sci-fi thriller Infini.
Written and directed by Shane Abbess - whose self-funded 2007 film Gabriel was a notable international success - the film is set in the 23rd century and tells of a group of soldiers who visit a remote outpost where an alien virus has taken hold.
The film, made for under $5 million, is impressively produced and directed by Abbess, whose love for old school sci-fi from the late-1970s and early-1980s is clearly on show.
But while it will be getting a theatrical release in the US, UK and Europe, it will be available in Australia only on digital platforms.
The reason: piracy.
In this interview, Abbess explains the problems with piracy in Australia, and how the fate of The Little Death and Wyrmwood at the hands of online pirates influenced his plans for the local release of Infini.
He also discusses his technique, his adventures in Hollywood, his love for old-school filmmaking, and why young filmmakers are so attracted to the genre films of yesteryear.

An abbess (Latin abbatissa, feminine form of abbas, abbot) is the female superior, or mother superior, of a community of nuns, often an abbey.
In the Catholic Church (both the Latin Rite and Eastern Catholic), Eastern Orthodox, Coptic and Anglican abbeys, the mode of election, position, rights, and authority of an abbess correspond generally with those of an abbot. The office is elective, the choice being by the secret votes of the nuns belonging to the community. Like an abbot, after being confirmed in her office by the Holy See, an abbess is solemnly admitted to her office by a formal blessing, conferred by the bishop in whose territory the monastery is located, or by an abbot or another bishop with appropriate permission. Unlike the abbot, the abbess receives only the ring and a copy of the rule of the order. She does not receive a mitre nor is given a crosier as part of the ceremony; however, by ancient tradition, she may carry a crosier when leading her community. The abbess also traditionally adds a pectoral cross to the outside of her habit as a symbol of office, though she continues to wear a modified form of her religious habit or dress, as she is unordained- not a male religious- and so does not vest or use choir dress in the liturgy.

BATTLING PIRATES: Interview with Australian sci-fi director Shane Abbess
Last week saw a small independent Australian film, Sunday, take a small step into history by becoming the first film in this country to get released on cinemas and digital platforms simultaneously.
This week sees another first of sorts, with the release of Australian sci-fi thriller Infini.
Written and directed by Shane Abbess - whose self-funded 2007 film Gabriel was a notable international success - the film is set in the 23rd century and tells of a group of soldiers who visit a remote outpost where an alien virus has taken hold.
The film, made for under $5 million, is impressively produced and directed by Abbess, whose love for old school sci-fi from the late-1970s and early-1980s is clearly on show.
But while it will be getting a theatrical release in the US, UK and Europe, it will be available in Australia only on digital platforms.
The reason: piracy.
In this interview, Abbess explains the problems with piracy in Australia, and how the fate of The Little Death and Wyrmwood at the hands of online pirates influenced his plans for the local release of Infini.
He also discusses his technique, his adventures in Hollywood, his love for old-school filmmaking, and why young filmmakers are so attracted to the genre films of yesteryear.

Museums, shows, fairs, conferences...Paris in winter runs at full speed. Everything stays open, without the sporadic closings that plague the rest of the year ...
