In Senegal, cotton fields stretch as far as the eye can see. Yet this natural wealth is increasingly overlooked in favour of used foreign imports as the country experiences a boom in second-hand trading from France.
"The French throw these clothes away? Really? They throw them away?" Fatou Dia, an employee at one of Senegal's second-hand sorting centres, is surprised to learn the origin of their stock. The country is experiencing a boom in second-hand trading, and separating unwanted garments enables Fatou to equip her daughter with school supplies. "I'm buying it little by little. I buy one thing, and then the next thing the next month. In this way, I manage". What is a lifeline to some is a business opportunity to others. "As far as wealth is concerned, human beings are never sated. Because he who does not have his own house is nothing". For Aliou Diallo, this cheap European clothing was a route to a better life. But in a country whose textile industry is rapidly disappearing from view, are these new imports doing more harm than good?

People are always trying to conjure up a magic formula for getting young people interested in the news, but two Senegalese rappers may have cracked it.
Keyti and Xuman - both veterans of Dakar's huge hip-hop scene - present the Journal Rappe, a short TV show that covers the week's news in a hip-hop format.
The show was launched in April as a new way for the duo to combine their music with news, politics and entertainment.
Journal Rappe takes a humourous approach to current affairs but the rappers take their mission seriously, regularly criticising politicians and encouraging people to register to vote.
"I think that the only way to draw people in and capture their attention is to make the product interesting," said Keyti.
"That they see we are having a good time making it, because whether it's Xuman or me, we have been perceived as engaged and serious artists and all, and all that allows us to break the ice."
Keyti and Xuman are no strangers to Senegalese politics; they have been involved in campaigning for more than a decade.
They used their music to encourage residents to register to vote ahead of the country's 2000 elections, and that ultimately helped former opposition figure Abdoulaye Wade get elected.
They were also involved in the Y'en a Marre campaign to oust him when he fell out of favour after two terms, and now Macky Sall is President.
Their political influence aside, Keyti and Xuman are good musicians who have a legion of loyal fans who attend their gigs and watch their content on YouTube.

Senegal has a pollution problem: rubbish and dirt lie strewn across the streets of the capital, Dakar. To reduce this pollution, members of parliament recently voted a law banning polythene bags altogether. But this has not worked. Now, religious leaders in the country are being urged to help. Youssoupha Sarr, the "green imam", is making the fight against pollution his jihad. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports from Dakar.

SATURDAY 25 JULY 2015 12:00 - 17:00
Our flagship event showcasing culture, heritage, diversity and community achievement through art, dance, music, workshops, demonstrations, and so much more.
A spectacular event presented by All2gether, with the support of Greenham Common Trust, Englefield Charitable Trust, and our media partners Kennet Radio and Buzz Magazine.
This is a free entry event open to all, showcasing culture, heritage, diversity and community achievement and success through: performance, music, dance, arts & crafts, workshops, stalls, exhibitions and food.
Organisers invite you to absorb and enjoy an afternoon of colourful art, entertainment and participation. An amazing line of performances and workshops have been secured for this unique event which is now in its seventh year.
The fantastic and popular Mr Tea and the Minions headline on the main stage and will have everyone dancing with their cheeky and infectious mix of Balkan, Gypsy jazz and ska. The multi-talented and charismatic Desmond Tucker from Sierra Leone brings Blues, Reggae, Afro Beat, Jazz and Soul with his group Dhad Productions, while Ruben Rocha Vaquinhas from Brazil, will add some Latin Funk and pop with his band Caravan Groove.
The Brazilian theme continues with a demonstration of Capoeira, and the opportunity to try this family friendly form of martial arts which combines dance, acrobatics and music. Granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage" by UNESCO, this is only one of the many exciting dance forms that will be showcasing at CultureFest. Egyptian belly dancers, English clog and Thai cultural performers are among those that will delight, while professional dancer Abanti Chakrabarty, an Indian art performer from Calcutta who is classically trained in Kathak dance, will demonstrate and discuss her art.
An innovation this year is the acoustic tent, where the audience will be able to get up close to some wonderful performers including Iqbal Pathan, the renowned Tabla player, and the international virtuoso Kora player and Griot from Senegal Jali Fily Cissokho. We are honoured to have Jali Fily with us and the opportunity to hear this amazing instrument, often described as the African Harp, is one not to be missed. If, however, you long for the more active and louder side of things then come and learn to play the spoons with Jo May or have a go at Djembe Drumming with RythmWorks or be even more active and take part in the Bollywood dance sessions with Jay Kumar.
Should there be the need to relax and find a calm corner then perhaps aerial yoga from WildLotus may be the place to hang out to the soothing strains of Wacapella and their songs from a wealth of musical traditions around the world.
With so many activities, workshops, gift and charity stalls for you to browse, bouncy castles for the young and a myriad of tasty delights to tickle the taste buds at CultureFest 2015, including Jamaican jerk chicken, Indian street food, Thai, Malaysian, Pakistani food, California Taco and a fruit juice bike, to pedal your own healthy drink, CultureFest 2015 on July 25th at the Racecourse for a great family fun afternoon is the place to be.
A truly diverse local community event, don’t miss it!

wn.com/Dakar Is The Capital And Largest City Of Senegal | Travel To Dakar City | Dakar 2015
Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal.
It is located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the Atlantic coast and is the westernmost city in the Old World and on the African mainland. Its position, on the western edge of Africa, is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port.More info visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakar

President Macky Sall said in an address to the nation on Friday that Senegal has scrapped its visa requirements for foreign visitors and will slash taxes on air fares as it seeks to revive a tourism sector crippled by high costs and a regional Ebola outbreak. The new measure on visa-free travel will come into effect on May 1. Sall also announced that government taxes on air fares would be cut by half in a bid to make Senegal a more competitively priced destination. Senegal recorded one case of Ebola last year but prevented any further spread.

Tourism in Senegal has been hit hard by the instability in neighbouring Mali, and the Ebola outbreak that hit three countries in West Africa.
The government says it wants to double the number of visitors within eight years, but with some parts of the tourism industry on the verge of collapse, few see that as an achievable target.
From Senegal in the coastal resort of Saly, Abdourahmane Dia reports for Africa Business Report.

In Senegal, all young people dream of going to Europe. They say it is easy to find work. Or if you play football, it is easy to be an elite athlete. But the reality is quite different. Nobody explains about the legal papers, or the language barriers, or how difficult it is to find a job contract and a place to live. My dream was to come to Europe, but now I’ve learned that my future is in my homeland: Senegal.
Mamadou arrived in Barcelona at just 16 years of age, and lived in different centers for minors until he turned 18. At 17 he created the documentary “Had I known, I wouldn’t have come” and “Tomorrow, more of the same” in order to make public the plight of Senegalese immigrants coming to Europe. These documentaries have been shown for 3 straight years in a variety of public and private schools in Ziguinchor, his hometown.
At 19 Mamadou got his first job in a bike rental company. The experience inspired him to start a new project called “A different Barcelona, on wheels”, which is a tour showing the less publicized social reality of Barcelona.
At 21 Mamadou decided to start Diandé Africa, an educational project born from his experience, both as a user and a volunteer, in a wide range of social entities in Barcelona (Fundación Exit, Casal dels infants, Punto de Referencia, Mercé Fontanilles and Nexes). The project takes place between Barcelona and Ziguinchor.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Kim Greisen, is pursuing his dream of completing 30 Ironman triathalons in 30 days. Against mental and physical anguish, and a horrific injury, a primal struggle between the mind and body begins.
Ironman is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world, and Greisen plans to complete 30 of them. On the first day of the competition, he crashes his bike and - without knowing it - fractures his thigh-bone. Despite tremendous pain, Kim refuses to give up. "Some people are looking for reasons to quit", explains Kim, "others find reasons to continue."

10. Barcelona - The city is a pioneer in smart city and low-carbon solutions.

8. Copenhagen - The city has committed to carbon neutrality by 2025 and 40% of its citizens regularly commute via bicycle.
7. Berlin - Berlin is testing out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies in the hopes of creating a virtual power plant from electric vehicles.
6. Tokyo - The city will create a smart town in the suburbs in partnership with major industry. The eco-burb will contain homes that integrate solar panels, storage ba tteries, and energy efficient appliances all connected to a smart grid.
5. London - also scored relatively high across the board. London has been well-recognized for some of its sustainability innovations (i.e. congestion tax) and its robust transit system.
4. New York - New York scored higher than most other cities in the ranking in all of the categories except of quality of life, where it ranked a poor 47th. It has teamed with innovator IBM to help the city prevent fires and protect first responders as well as identify questionable tax refund claims--a move that is expected to save the city about $100 million over a five-year period.
3. Paris - Paris already has a highly successful bike sharing program, Velib, and just last month, its mayor launched a similar model for small EVs called Autolib.
2. Toronto - smartest city in NA, scored well across the board, it is an active member of the Clinton 40 (C40) megacities, which seek to transition to the low-carbon economy. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.
1. The smartest city in the world is Vienna - Vienna was the only city that ranked in the top 10 in every category. It is establishing bold smart-city targets and tracking their progress to reach these goals with programs like Smart Energy Vision 2050, Roadmap 2020, and Action Plan 2012-2015.
