Stan and Arlene Ginsburg Family Foundation Lecture Series
Ronald J. Granieri
Executive Director, FPRI Center for the Study of America and the West
To celebrate FPRI's 60th Anniversary, we have devoted this year’s Ginsburg Series to lectures on geopolitics and how it can be used to understand the greatest challenges facing the United States today. FPRI’s founder, Robert Strausz-Hupé, introduced the term, “geopolitics,” into the American vocabulary in 1942 with the publication of his book Geopolitics: The Struggle for Space and Power. Simply put, geopolitics offers a perspective on contemporary international affairs that is anchored in the study of history, geography and culture, or as FPRI’s James Kurth has put it, in the study of the “realities and mentalities of the localities.” Strausz-Hupé embedded that perspective in FPRI and it remains today our method or, to use today's language, our “brand.”
In the first event of this series, join FPRI's Ron Granieri, as he examines the meaning, the method, and the importance of using geopolitics to study conemporary world affairs. Granieri is the Executive Director of FPRI's Center for the Study of America and the West and is the host of Geopolitics with Granieri, our monthly, members-only series held at FPRI and on the web. He is also the Director of Research at The University of Pennsylvania's Lauder Institute. Granieri received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago.

FPRI founder Robert Strausz-Hupé once observed that “world history is not a succession of happy endings.” If we needed a reminder, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has provided it. What is to become of Ukraine? How to discern Russian intentions beyond Ukraine? How to assess the West’s capacity to respond? To explore these questions, we are pleased to feature an outstanding scholar of European politics and diplomacy – Jakub Grygiel, the George H.W. Bush Associate Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced
International Studies. Grygiel is also a Senior fellow at FPRI and at the Center for European Policy Analysis. Author of Great Powers and Geopolitical Change (Johns Hopkins Press), he received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He writes regularly for all the major journals of commentary as well as in US, Swiss, Polish, and Italian newspapers. He has been a consultant to the OECD and the World Bank.

On January 7, 2015, as part of the JHU/APL Rethinking Seminar Series - Rethinking Global Security Constructs, Threats and Potential Responses (2014-15), Robert D. Kaplan (Senior Fellow, Center for a New American Security) discussed "Chinese Views, Strategy and Geopolitics."
Mr. Kaplan focused on China's own geopolitics and how the South and East China Seas, India, Korea, Russia, all look from a Chinese perspective. He also explored the concept that China's ability to challenge the US international order will depend on how China handles its near-abroad as well as its own economy.
Mr. Kaplan is the bestselling author of fifteen books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including Asia’s Cauldron, The Revenge of Geography, Monsoon, Balkan Ghosts, and Eastward to Tartary. He is a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and a contributing editor at The Atlantic, where his work first appeared three decades ago. He was chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, a visiting professor at the United States Naval Academy, and a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board. Foreign Policy magazine twice named him one of the world’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers.”

To understand the Middle East, a region riven by conflict, you need an expert "geopolitician" to explain the chessboard -- for example, in finding the balance to our interest in defeating the
Islamic State with our interest in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear weapons state or in exercising hegemony over the region. Few analysts are better able to explain the sources of conflict or their potential resolution in their larger historical, cultural, and geographical contexts than Adam Garfinkle.
In this year of our 60th anniversary, we take special note of those, like Adam, who got their start in this field at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. Adam went on to serve on the staff of the US National Security Commission/21st Century, then as principal speechwriter to the Secretary of State (Colin Powell). He has also been editor of The National Interest magazine and is now editor of The American Interest magazine, both significant sources of analysis and understanding of American foreign policy choices today. He received his Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania and serves on FPRI's Board of Advisors.

Nigeria is located in western Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. The country’s size is comparable to that of Venezuela, or twice the size of the US state of California. But unlike either of these comparisons, Nigeria’s population level is many times higher. With about 178 million people, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and the seventh most populous in the world. However, not all Nigerians speak the same language or share the same ethnicity. An important thing to understand about Nigeria is that it is a multicultural state. There are about 400 different ethnic groups from a number of distinct cultural groups, with the largest being the Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and the Fulani ethnic groups. Nigerian politics has traditionally been managed by these four.
Considering its large population, economy and industrial output, the country is frequently referred to as the ‘Giant of Africa’. Nigeria’s external power project is evident in its economic influence throughout the continent, as Nigerian businessmen are active all over the region. This refers to legal businesses as well as to black market sectors like arms trade, drug trade, human trafficking, business scams, etc. Furthermore, the government in Abuja uses a number of pan-African organizations to bolster its international image as a reliable state and the gateway to Africa. Yet, despite the country’s economic and demographic influence, Nigeria’s foreign policy is significantly restricted due to the country’s domestic politics.
In this analysis we will look at the geopolitics of Nigeria, what shapes its domestic politics and what can we expect for the future of Nigeria.

In his fascinating presentation Dr. Friedman explains how in the long view, history is seen as a series of events, but the course of those events is determined by individuals and their actions. During the next ten years, individual leaders will face significant transitions for their nations: the United States' relationships with Iran and Israel will be undergoing changes, China will likely confront a major crisis, and the wars in the Islamic world will subside. Unexpected energy and technology developments will emerge, and labor shortages will begin to matter more than financial crises. Dr. Friedman will analyze these events from the perspectives of the men and women leading these global changes, focusing in particular on the American president, who will require extraordinary skills to shepherd the United States through this transitional period. Dr. Friedman's presentation is a provocative and fascinating look at the conflicts and opportunities that lie ahead.

Energy Economic Growth and Geopolitical Futures Eight LongRange Scenarios
Donwload Here http://books.warlords.xyz/?book=0262028891&hjki;=tfyc8.html
This book presents eight varied scenarios of possible global futures, emphasizing the interconnectedness of three drivers of change: energy prices, economic growth, and geopolitics. Other published global future scenarios focus on only one of these factors, viewing, for example, economic growth as unaffected by energy prices or energy prices in isolation from geopolitical conditions. In this book, Evan Hillebrand and Stacy Closson offer a new approach to scenario construction that acknowledges the codependence of these key drivers and integrates qualitative analysis with a quantitative model. The eight scenarios represent possible combinations of high or low energy prices, strong or weak economic growth, and global harmony or disharmony across three time periods: the 2010s, 2020 to 2040, and 2040 to 2050. The "Regional Mercantilism" scenario, for example, envisions high energy prices, weak economic growth, and global disharmony. To impose numerical consistency across scenarios, Hillebrand and Closson employ the International Futures (IFs) model developed by Barry Hughes. (Interested readers can download this interactive model to alter or build scenarios themselves.) Assessing the probability of each scenario, they conclude that increased U.S. energy supply and the sustainability of the Chinese growth miracle are the most significant drivers over the next forty years.

In an era of relative energy abundance for the US, the report—authored by Ambassador Carlos Pascual, CGEP Fellow and former Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, US Department of State—provides a framework to understand the relationships between energy geopolitics and energy markets as well as a new analytic foundation for governments and the private sector to assess how investment decisions and government policy will influence national security, economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Ambassador Pascual provides an overview of the report and its key findings. After his remarks, Ed Crooks, US Industry and Energy Editor at the Financial Times, moderates a panel discussion featuring:
Jason Bordoff, Founding Director, Center on Global Energy Policy;
Iain Conn, Chief Executive Officer, Centrica;
Michael Levi, David M. Rubenstein Senior Fellow for Energy and the Environment, Council on Foreign Relations;
Ambassador Carlos Pascual; and
Mona Sutphen, Partner, Macro Advisory Partners and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy.

The Jordan Distinguished Lecture Series brings our world’s most distinguished scholars on Russia to create debate and spur discussion on the past, present and future of Russia in a global setting.
The 2014 Distinguished Lecture features the work of Dr. Stephen Kotkin, the John P. Birkelund ’52 Professor in History and International Affairs at Princeton University and Vice Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School. In his many writings on Russia and the USSR, Kotkin has helped reshape how historians function in the field and how the public perceives the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet order. Among his books are Steeltown, USSR (1991), Magnetic Mountain (1997), Armageddon Averted (2008), and as co-author Uncivil Societies (2009).
Kotkin’s lecture will draw on the first installment in a three-volume history of Joseph Stalin and his times, and carries to the end of the 1920s. Above all, Stalin focuses on the way power operates, in all its dimensions, restoring a sense of surprise, even wonder to revolution, dictatorship, Russian power in the world, and Stalin himself. It is based on exhaustive and scrupulous research and aims to fully revise our perceptions of the person and his times. Using military intelligence and secret police materials, it gets inside a paranoid mentality far beyond Stalin’s person, as well as the internal machinations and rival personalities of the infamous Cheka-GPU who aided Stalin’s ascendancy. The book explains how chaos from revolution and civil war became a permanent feature of Soviet administration, even as the regime and Stalin acquired ever more power. It reveals Stalin’s trip to Siberia in 1928 in a new light, capturing the moment when he decided to remake Eurasia, and places the momentous decision for collectivization more deeply than ever in the tragic history of imperial Russia.

China’s growing military and economic clout appears to have unnerved its neighbors, possibly setting it on a collision course with them and the US. How to assess China’s rise and its geopolitical impact?
To answer these questions and more, we are pleased to feature June Teufel Dreyer, a Senior Fellow in FPRI's Asia Program and Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami, Coral Gables. Formerly senior Far East Specialist at the Library of Congress, she has also served as Asia policy advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and as commissioner of the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission established by the U.S. Congress. A frequent visitor to the Far East, Dr Dreyer’s most recent book is China’s Political System: Modernization and Tradition, ninth edition (Routledge, 2014). She is currently writing a book on Sino-Japanese relations.

Foreign Policy Round Table for Rising Philadelphians
Sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management
Moderated by Ron Granieri
Oil has been fuel and lubricant for international conflict ever since the development of the internal combustion engine, but recent technological developments have given oil an even greater geopolitical significance. For the past four decades, regimes from the Persian Gulf to Russia to Venezuela have used oil wealth to advance national and ideological agendas and to exert influence over the policies of industrialized nations, especially the United States. The emergence of Canadian Tar Sands as a major oil source and the fracking boom across North America, however, have upended traditional thinking about who produces oil, who imports it, and the political leverage that oil wealth can provide. Plentiful supplies and plummeting prices are a godsend for consumers, but a potential nightmare for societies dependent on oil revenue, with potential consequences for the global economy and balance of power that are still being calculated.
Joining us for this edition of the Round Table are FPRI Senior Fellows Frank R. Gunter and Wojtek Wolfe, as well as Steven Kopits, Managing Director of Princeton Energy Advisors.

Global Connect @ UCI is an original educational partnership developed by UC Irvine's School of Social Sciences to enrich California's secondary school curriculum in international studies. This is accomplished by translating current university -level concepts and knowledge into a curriculum that is age appropriate for high school students. The global studies knowledge-gap in our public schools is a critical problem that needs a flexible and immediate response. Students need lessons they can relate to as global citizens that will affect how they see themselves in the world. They must be capable of thinking in terms of worldwide issues to succeed in their respective lives and careers so that they may contribute to the general welfare of society. This cannot be achieved through textbook curriculum that is outdated by the time it is received by students. Teachers cannot abandon their classroom responsibilities to acquire current knowledge of the quickly changing international environment. Global conflicts and issues need to be brought to the students as current events not as history.
