Blizzards are expected later on Friday as the Met Office warned that widespread snow and ice would see temperatures plunge
By Helena Horton, Eleanor Steafel6:06PM GMT 20 Nov 2015
• Snow storms and blizzards expected to sweep into the UK today as temperatures plunge
• Cold snap will last throughout the weekend
• Warnings issued from 4pm
What's going on with the snow?
With snow falling in northern parts of the UK, temperatures set to plummet below freezing and gales of 70mph, weather forecasters have issued a stark warning that winter is coming.
High ground in Snowdonia, the Peak District, the Pennines and Scotland were coated in snow today as icy Arctic winds brought cold weather to northern Britain.
Up to four inches (10cm) is expected to fall overnight, and temperatures will fall to minus 3C.
The cold snap is a marked contrast to the recent mild weather which led to it being the second mildest start to November on record, and the Met Office has issued weather warnings for snow or wind for most of the UK until tomorrow evening.
Sean Penston, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "It is the first significant cold spell in the south this year."
A band of rain, sleet and snow moved south across northern and eastern Scotland on Friday afternoon, as well as north-east England, the Met Office said, and snow could settle in more low-lying parts.
"Other areas of the UK could see some snow Friday night into Saturday as the band of rain, sleet and snow transfers southwards, with perhaps some small amounts of settling snow over high ground," a spokesman said.
"The combination of rain, sleet and snow and dropping temperatures will also lead to a risk of ice in places, particularly over high level routes on Saturday morning."
Central and southern parts of England could also see hail and the possibility of some sleet during the night.
Temperatures tonight could fall to freezing in the south, with the possibility of minus 3C in the north, but the freezing winds will make it feel much colder, Mr Penston warned.
Saturday, much of the UK will see plenty of sunshine, with temperatures between 3C and 7C, but icy winds will make it feel much colder and freezing overnight temperatures will lead to frosts and icy patches.
He said: "Winds will ease over the course of tomorrow morning and into the afternoon, and the risk of showers will be confined to eastern and western coasts, with central areas seeing drier conditions.
"But it will be very cold again tomorrow night, with a risk of icy stretches on the roads. Minimum temperatures across much of Britain will be minus 2C or minus 3C."
Frank Saunders, the Met Office's chief operational meteorologist, added: "The Met Office is forecasting strong winds and some snow for this weekend which means there is the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and possible disruption to transport.
"With this in mind, if you have travel plans over the weekend, we'd advise that you keep an eye on the forecast and warnings for your area."

The cold snap is expected to be short-lived, with warmer weather returning next week, thought it is expected to be unsettled.

Met Office weather warning of high wind's and possible snow showers in Buckinghamshire. The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning of gale force winds up to 60mph and possible snow showers in Bucks tonight.Forecasters are warning that a swathe of gale force north to northwesterly winds, accompanied by a band of rain and snow, will move south across much of central and southern Britain from 9pm Friday night until 3pm on Saturday.Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely and the strongest winds will last for only a few hours. The weather warning states: “Additionally, some of the snow may settle, this more likely over some of the high ground, for example in north Wales, but there is a possibility of temporary settling snow even at low levels.“The worst affected areas may see a few centimetre but on current evidence, most places will see little if any lying snow. On Saturday morning, ice will be an additional hazard, particularly for higher level routes.People in Bucks are being warned to expect difficult driving conditions and possible travel disruption.A Met Office forecaster said: “A major (but temporary) change of weather type will see the winds swing into a more northerly direction, pulling down much colder air across the whole of Britain and western Europe, after what has been an exceptionally mild first half of November.“Wintry showers will spread to many northern areas in particular and night frosts will become much more widespread.”

Upgraded Storm Abigail set to batter Britain with winds of up to 90mph
Britain could be battered by winds of up to 90mph as Storm Abigail was upgraded by forecasters .
Initial yellow "be aware" warnings for rain and winds up to 80mph were issued for the Western Isles and the Highlands of Scotland for this evening into Friday.
But warnings for Abigail - the first storm named by the Met Office - have now been upgraded to amber "be prepared" alerts.
magicseaweed.comThreatening: Graphic shows Storm Abigail as it makes away towards the northern tip of the British Isles
Yellow warnings have been added for the rest of Scotland between 6pm today and 2pm on Friday.
The Met Office said the north and north-west of Scotland are likely to see severe south-westerly gales later today, with strong winds extending across the Northern Isles through into Friday morning.
The forecasters said gusts of 60-70mph are expected, with some of more than 90mph in exposed locations.
JOHN GILES/PADamage: Water from the River Ouse laps up against buildings and shops close to the riverbank following heavy rain
Chief meteorologist Paul Gunderson said: "In terms of impact, the Western Isles, north of Scotland and Orkney could see winds of 90mph with potential impacts upon transport and maybe power supplies too.
"We could see quite a lot of lightning as well and high tides, so with that in mind we have upgraded to amber."
JOHN GILES/PAFloods: The River Ouse after bursting its banks in York city centre following heavy downpours in the area
Ferry operator CalMac is warning of likely disruption to services and is urging travellers to "think carefully" if planning to visit the west coast.
Operations director Drew Collier said: "There is a clear warning that major weather related disruption to ferry services on the Clyde and Hebrides routes is likely later this week so I would urge people to factor this in when making travel plans.
"The sea conditions we are expecting could well be too treacherous to sail in."
Met OfficeWarnings: The Met Office has increased its yellow weather warning to an amber warning of "be prepared"
Motorists are also being warned to expect disruption.
RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: "Strong, sudden gusts of wind can be very dangerous for motorists driving in exposed areas so we are urging motorists not to be caught out by Storm Abigail.
"The 'invisible' force of the wind can lead to vehicles unexpectedly being knocked off course, sometimes with devastating consequences."
BBCForecaster: Meteorologists expect Storm Abigail to hit Scotland towards the end of this week
It is hoped the "name our storms" project by the Met Office and Met Eireann will help raise awareness of severe weather and ensure greater safety of the public.
Storms are being named when they are deemed to have the potential to cause a substantial impact in the UK and/or Ireland.
Abigail is the first on the list of winning names, followed by Barney, Clodagh, Desmond, Eva, Frank, Gertrude, Henry, Imogen, Jake, Katie, Lawrence, Mary, Nigel, Orla, Phil, Rhonda, Steve, Tegan, Vernon and Wendy.

the U.K.’s Met Office climate and meteorological agency reported, for the first time ever, average global temperatures will rise approximately 1.02°C above pre-industrial levels in a single year. This year’s El Nino, characterized by unusually warm temperatures in the equatorial pacific, helped push temperature levels to the new record. But of course they were bolstered by the continued trend of human-caused global warming. Peter Scott, head of the Met’s climate monitoring and attribution office, said this likely won’t be the last time the earth surpasses the 1-degree threshold .

Severe gales are expected to strike Scotland and northern England this week as a low pressure system moves across the UK.
South-westerly winds will intensify early this morning, with gales of up to 70mph expected in south-east Scotland and England's North.
A separate low pressure system will move east across northern Scotland later today.
The winds will ease on Monday afternoon, but could pick up again in the evening, according to the Met Office.
Forecaster Jenna Macgregor said: "It will be a very isolated 70mph, but that's why we put the warning out - just because if that does happen there can be some disruption, especially to travel in the morning."
Patchy rain is also expected in the North and North West, but there will be mainly cloudy conditions in the South.
The expected rainfall, including some over western Yorkshire, is being driven by warm air flowing in from the Atlantic.
The Met Office's warning states: "The public should be aware of the risk.
"Much of the rain will be linked to the high ground of northern England with good shelter to the east.
"However, rivers are likely to rise in response to this rainfall and localised flooding is possible in the rain area as well as downstream in rivers flowing eastwards away from the Yorkshire Dales."

'The day they made it rained' - BBC Radio 4 documentary on Weather Modification, broadcast on 30th August 2001. On August 15th 1952, one of the worst flash floods ever to have occurred in Britain swept through the Devon village of Lynmouth. Thirty five people died as a torrent of 90 million tons of water and thousands of tons of rock poured off saturated Exmoor and into the village destroying homes, bridges, shops and hotels.
The disaster was officially termed "the hand of God" but new evidence from previously classified government files suggests that a team of international scientists working with the RAF and UK met office had been experimenting in the area with artificial rainmaking between August 4th and August 15th. These experiments are known as Operation Cumulus, or Operation Witchdoctor as known by RAF pilots.
Other classified documents on the trials have gone missing, but eye witnesses and people involved have told their story for this BBC Radio Four' Document programme.

wn.com/UK Met Office Kills 35 People In Rainmaking Experiments Lynmouth 1952.

A significant problem in many construction contracts is the inherent subjectivity in judging to what extent a weather event is exceptionally adverse. Disruption from adverse weather conditions may affect working conditions, lead to lost time, and compromise worker safety.
The NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) uses weather data and meteorological expertise to give a more precise definition of when an exceptional weather event has occurred. With solid statistical evidence derived from Met Office observations both parties can agree on whether a particular month contains a compensation event.
Watch our NEC and the Weather webinar with the Met Office which was recorded on 28 April to find out more.

We behandelen o.a.
• Cloud Identity
• Synchronized Identity
• Federated Identity

3G adoptie model
Begin met ‘Waarom’ (Simon Sinek);
Adoptie curve van Rogers;
Veranderen van gedrag;
Omgaan met weerstand
Adoptie strategieën voor diverse groepen en situaties;
Scenario’s: het werk omdenken.
Tiny Habits: oefen nieuw gedrag
