Brunei is a small country in Southeast Asia just of the coast of Malaysia. It gained independence from the British in 1984 and very rapidly became one of the richest countries in the world on the basis of its oil reserves and petrochemical industries. According to the IMF, Brunei along with Algeria and Libya is only one of three countries in the world that do not have any debtwhatsoever. Incidentally all these countries are petroleum rich muslim countries.
The head of government and state in Brunei is the Sultan since Brunei is a sultanate/kingdom. The Forbes list has put the Sultan of Brunei as the richest royal in the world. Naturally the Sultan has the largest collection of luxury cars in the world. His wealth is estimated to be about 20 Billion USD. President Obama once joked to Sultan of Brunei, while he was visiting the US, that he should go out and do a bit of shopping to boost the American economy.
Recently the 31 years old prince of Brunei got married. It was one of the most opulent weddings ever seen in the human history. The bride and groom have diamonds embroidered in their dresses and the traditional flower bouquet that the bride generally hold was entirely made up of diamonds. Only the cost of flowers for the ceremony cost more than half a million dollars while the festivities continued non stop for 8 days.
Prince Abdul Malik Brunei Wedding
Being one of the richest persons on the planet the Prince of Brunei has an impressive car collection. Here are the top 5 cars in Sultan Of Brunei’s Collection:
Rolls Royce Silver Spurs
The Sultan of Brunei naturally has a Rolls Royce in his luxury cars collection which should not come out as a surprise but this is no ordinary Rolls Royce, It is a gold-plated custom model which cost him more than 14 Million USD.
McLaren F1
As far as sports car go, McLaren F1 is second to none. It was designed and manufactured by McLaren Automotive Inc from Woking, Surrey, England. The F1 was produced for seven years between 1992-1998. It is one of the most expensive sports cars existing on the planet. The Sultan of Brunei has 8 of these.
Ferrari FXX
The Ferrari FXX is a high performance sports car, just like the McLaren F1, manufactured by Ferrari in Maranello, Italy. The FXX was produced from 2005-2007 and only 30 cars were produced. Today the FXX has become a rare jewel of a car and due its scarcity commands a very high price. Naturally the Sultan of Brunei has one in his collection.
Mercedes Benz CLK GTR
Yet another sports car in the Sultan of Brunei’s car collection. The CLK GTR is a sports car manufactured by Mercedes-AMG, the performance and sports arm of the Mercedes company. The GTR has the distinction of winning the Le Mans rally which is a 24 hours race twice. The Sultan of Brunei has two limited edition CLK GTR in his collection.
Bugatti Veyron
No self-respecting luxury car collection can be complete without a Bugatti Veyron and therefore this collection had to have a Bugatti Veyron as well. The Veyron is manufactured by the Italian luxury automobile manufacturer Bugatti and it is perhaps the only car to come close to the McLaren F1 in terms of speed, performance and durability.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit has been winding up in Brunei.
The nations have reached a compromise, calling for a new round of world trade talks that would consider the needs of developing countries, which fear they are being left behind in the new global economy.
The most recent world trade talks failed miserably last year in Seattle as riots raged outside.
Led by President Clinton, wealthy nations had entered this year's annual summit of the 21-member forum hoping to urge the World Trade Organization to start new talks by 2001.
But Malaysia insisted on seeing an agenda first, saying they are tired of being pushed around in the W-T-O by their wealthy trading partners.
After two days of talks, the leaders struck a compromise: They decided to call for an agenda first - as the poor nations wanted - and push for talks to start next year, which the rich nations sought.
The poor nations are furious at the insistence of the United States and other wealthy countries that new trade talks include provisions on environmental protection and workers' rights.
Poor nations say that could undermine their key competitive advantages in the global economy - their ability to exploit cheap labor and natural resources.
They accuse the West of hypocrisy in seeking labour and environmental standards that took years to develop in nations that already had been industrialized.
APEC can only urge the W-T-O to begin new talks, so Thursday's statement does not necessarily mean talks will begin next year.
In another development, the final APEC communique said China should be accepted into the WTO soon, followed quickly by Taiwan and sometime later by Russia and Vietnam.
China has been trying for years to get into the Geneva-based group that sets global trade rules and now appears quite close.
A final sticking point for China's W-T-O bid is a trade pact with Mexico, which wants assurances that the Chinese won't flood its market with cheap goods.
In it's final declaration the organisation also praised the efforts of South Korean President Kim Dae-jung to create a warming of relations with North Korea.
The APEC summit in oil-rich Brunei is Clinton's last and comes at a time when many of the group's leaders face uncertainties or even serious threats to their rule.
Philippine President Joseph Estrada faces an impeachment proceeding over corruption charges, Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori is reeling after a scandal involving his spy chief that has forced him to say he will quit next year and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori is up against efforts from within his own party to call a no-confidence vote.

"During the course of our latest meeting here in Brunei, it has become clear to us that we must meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the new millennium. Despite encouraging signs of a return to strong growth, we are determined not to be complacent. Globalisation raises our stake in a healthy rules-based multilateral trading system, but launching a new round of global trade talks must benefit all the WTO members, especially the least developed and developing economies."

The leaders had entered the summit hoping to urge the World Trade Organisation to start new talks by 2001 - after the most-recent effort failed miserably last year in Seattle with riots raging outside.
But Third World countries led by Malaysia insisted on seeing an agenda first, saying they were tired of being pushed around in the WTO by their wealthy trading partners.
APEC can only urge the WTO to begin new talks, and after two days of talks the leaders struck a compromise seeking an agenda first - as poor nations wanted - with talks to start next year, which rich nations sought.
In other developments, the APEC leaders said China should be accepted into the WTO soon, followed quickly by Taiwan and sometime later by Russia and Vietnam.
They also expressed concern over high world oil prices and said the (B) billions of citizens in APEC countries should be given access to Internet by 2010.
The leaders also urged countries recovering from the Asia financial crisis to keep up with painful economic reforms that some may be tempted to scrap now that things are looking up.
Meantime, APEC's first ladies toured more traditional locations on Thursday, visiting a water village.
Kampong Ayer is a local tourist attraction that sees few foreign visitors.
The first ladies were treated to the local products and dance, as well as visits to villagers' homes.

"It is now seven years. During the course of our latest meeting in Brunei, it has become clear to us that we must meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the new millennium. Despite encouraging signs of a return to strong growth, we are determined not to be complacent. Globalisation raises our stake in a healthy rules based multilateral trading system, but launching a new round of global trade talks must benefit all the WTO members, especially the least developed and developing economies."

"So our vision here in Brunei is to prepare each of our economies and all of our people to embrace this revolution in technology as a passport to the fruits of globalisation."

The leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum have been meeting in Brunei for the group's annual summit.
On the first full day of the conference they pledged to open markets and make the region safer.
This summit will be the last for Bill Clinton, who has been an active participant in the organisation during his time as U-S President.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum has assembled leaders from 21 nations.
The heads of state and their representatives will have to deal with a host of contentious issues including re-starting W-T-O negotiations and trying to halt soaring oil prices.
Pacific Rim leaders opened their annual summit on Wednesday in Brunei, the tiny, oil-rich sultanate on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo.
Some leaders, including U-S President Bill Clinton, are getting a temporary breather from political uncertainties at home as they talk business at the forum.
He tried to reassure businessmen and politicians that the change in the U-S administration would not diminish its commitment to trade with the Asia-Pacific region.

"One of the things both vice President Gore and Governor Bush agreed on in this election is that the United States should continue its strong leadership for a more integrated global economy and for expanded trade. And as nearly as I can tell there was virtually no disagreement on that except that there were disagreements about the extent we should push the trade plus agenda if you will that I've been talking about for the last several years. But on the question of leadership in trade, I think the world can rest easy because both of the candidates made strong commitments to do that." SUPER CAPTION: US President Bill Clinton
And he said he believed APEC's main achievement in the last decade had been to encourage free trade.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"In reality the most successful countries were not those who started with the biggest advantages, but those that made the advantages they had, by opening their markets and ultimately their societies. That is why APEC has been a force for free markets."

Chinese President Jiang Zemin was another high-profile guest.
He urged the delegates not to ignore the needs of the developing world.

"Because of the leading economic globalisation by the developed countries, the status and level of development in different areas and different countries continues to become wider apart, as the developing countries are facing new challenges. The gap between North and South regions are getting bigger. And this is not only not good for the economic development in these developing countries, but also is not in the interest of global peace and stability."

Chinese and Mexican officials are expected to reach a bilateral trade deal during the APEC talks.
A deal with Mexico is the last obstacle for China entering the W-T-O - the Geneva-based body that sets global trade rules.
China has been trying to get into the trade group for 14 years.
Finally being accepted will make a big difference for Beijing, enabling it to become more integrated with the global economy.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"Now with China's entry into the WTO, China's opening and reform will enter a new era. We will endeavour to a more open economy and continue to strengthen our cooperation with other countries in the areas of economy, trade, science and technology and try our best to make a contribution to the development of the world economy, especially the economy of the Asia-Pacific region."
